>> now at 5, a man in jail tonight, arrested accused of assaulting a plainclothes san jose police officer who was providing security for the san jose mayor at the time. the whole thing happen right in the middle of an interview with kron 4. thanks for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow kron. 4 camera, of course, catching most of the incident. it happened yesterday around 6. >> as one of our reporters was interviewing a san jose mayor matt mahan in downtown san jose kron four's dan kerman reports. >> san jose police say this man. 35 year-old wesley pollard has been arrested for battering a police officer and resisting arrest with violence. the incident was caught by kron 4 cameras during a tuesday evening interview with san jose mayor matt mahan at first in san fernando as steps right next to the mayor. both he and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for

the mayor in-form pollard. that interview is under way do it. >> we're moving talking for mark. >> pollard uses profanity and tells the officer to mind his own business. what happens next is off camera. it's unclear who touches who first. but pollard is heard saying hall smack you right right now 9 seconds later, he does just that hitting the officer in the face and head at least twice at that point. a scuffle ensues and police are called witnesses say at some point pollard begins shaking and the officers tie after 2 more minutes and police nowhere in sight. a customer from a nearby business comes to the offices. rescue removing pollard's hands from the officers tie and allowing the officer to handcuff him.

police eventually arrived and took pollard into custody. one person who witnessed the confrontation but didn't want to go on camera says he's not even sure that the suspect knew the mayor was even involved in all of this and was definitely clear that the person did not know that the security person protecting the mayor was actually a san jose police officer in a statement sent as a police say the officer did identify himself and made many attempts to de-escalate the situation and avoid using force or taking any enforcement action. police confirm pollard has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. the officer hospitalized overnight with head and neck pain. but he's now been released. the case is now under review by the santa clara county district attorney's office. dan kerman kron. 4 news. protests calling for a ceasefire in gaza are growing on the uc berkeley campus. demonstrators have created. >> a tent city of sorts in

front of sproul hall in solidarity with other universities in the u.s. doing similar protests. kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with one of the organizers about what they're calling for. >> it's now day 3 of the free palestine camp on the uc berkeley campus. i spoke with one of the participants, yaz and cash who told me the camp has grown to about 70 tents, as you might imagine, all kind of. >> making sure. >> what we're working on on campus is moving. so a lot of us have deadlines. we're chasing. so people are balancing those things. he says the protests will continue until certain demands are met. >> including the university calling for a cease-fire in gaza and the stopping of any financial support to israel putting him anyway, not that's the second event aniston from all university funds. partnerships that kind of promote. this carnage. >> similar protests have been held at other universities, including columbia, yale and nyu. all of those protests resulted in arrests. uc

berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof says the free palestine camp has yet to disrupt campus operations it comes to nonviolent political protest. the campuses are not to use law enforcement. >> unless it is absolutely necessary. to prevent bodily damage or threat to anyone's life. we're not at that point. >> members of uc berkeley's jewish student union say they haven't felt safe for months. sophomore sharon and described to kron 4 what she's experienced mob. some of us. they've surrounded some of us they've had. i had them take. >> random pictures and videos of me for no reason when i'm walking past the gate because they know my involvement in my community. uc berkeley says the safety of all students continues to be its top priority in berkeley. rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> these antiwar protests are continuing across the country. video from a usc shows students in school security

going head to head over, setting up tent camps. there at the university of texas in austin. protesters in support of gaza led to several people being detained this afternoon. similar protests continue at columbia university in new york where a tent encampment remains in place after the university had given a deadline for its removal of today. but that deadline has been pushed back to the end of the week as the 2 sides say they've been making progress negotiating. it's clearing. >> we want to lend our hand, not just our hearts and we want to we want to create a framework of real support. >> 2 weeks after the arizona supreme court ruled in favor of a 160 year-old near total abortion ban. governor gavin newsom is announcing new legislation to allow arizona doctors who perform abortions here in california, arizona currently has a law on the books allowing abortions in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. but the state

supreme court ruled earlier this month. it should follow a lot from 18. 64 which bans nearly all abortions except for when the pregnant person's life is in danger. and response newsom and the california legislative women's caucus are pushing forward and urgency bill allowing arizona doctors in good standing to come to california to provide abortion care for their patients who have traveled here. >> we proudly take on this fight. we will not abandon our sisters or their health care professionals in arizona or in any other state. get this bill to my desk as quickly as possible. >> because newsom's legislation is an urgency bill. it needs two-thirds approval to pass. meantime, the gop controlled arizona at lower state house voted to repeal that near abortion ban. however, it still needs approval from the arizona state senate and the governor. today's announcement comes on the same day denim day observance mets to empower and support survivors of violence.

the campaign began in italy back in the 90's when a conviction was overturned, arguing a rape victim's jeans were so tight. there was no way her attacker was able to remove them without her help implying she had consented to the attack the next day italian women wore denim to work in solidarity with the victim. and in the years since the signal of solidarity has spread around the world today, san francisco city leaders more their denim showing support. >> today serves as a reminder that we must continue the fight against the cold front that normalizes it perpetuates violence. >> denim day is observed on the last wednesday of april each year. this is the second year san francisco leaders observed denim day. >> new at 5, a bay area man has been found dead after falling apparently while on a hike in oregon that happened sunday on the coastal trail near natural bridges, which is fewer than 20 miles from the

california border. another hiker reported seeing a body on the rocks down below the trail. rescue crews then repelled about 300 feet down to the victim to retrieve his body. the victim has been identified as richard gerhart from san jose. >> police in fairfield are investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a semi truck early this morning. it happened in a parking lot on cannon. also drive around 5.15, this morning. semi truck was pulling away when it hit the female pedestrian. the woman died at the scene. this is the second deadly pedestrian collision in fairfield in the last 2 days. >> david, to pack the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi will have to wait another month to learn his fate. the paps original sentencing hearing was scheduled for this morning but has since been pushed back to mid-may. the 43 year-old faces a maximum of 50 years in prison for attacking nancy pelosi's husband in october of 2022.

gloomy say that they they want to see that sunshine and brings us miles back and well eventually get there. but right now, the fog kind of just camping in around the bay area, in fact, is probably the deep in tonight. and i think lower just a bit. we're seeing more low clouds around the bay area. more drizzle overnight tonight and tomorrow morning to looking out toward the golden gate, gloomy bridge. right now, it is pretty cloudy out around the bay area at this time. these temperatures reflecting that. what a change from just a couple days ago were up in the 80's and seems a nice warm temperatures. now 60's across the board and well, guess what, we're going to see more clouds on our way. but that area of low pressure that's been spinning off the coastline, that's going to begin to sag a little further to the south. and as it does high pressure going to build in behind it. so we're not going to be cloud-free. but what's going to happen likely see the atmosphere what that means, that marine layer that's been riding pretty high up in the atmosphere about 4,000 feet or so. that's going to drop all the way down to about a 1,1500 feet. that means lower levels of fog. that means you can push all the way the valleys. that means a little more sunshine

>> today we are learning more about the project to transform san francisco's stonestown galleria into housing and more kron four's. gayle ong is with us live in the studio too. learn all about it. a go. >> yes, a here are some renderings of that project. so this may look familiar. that's the whole foods over at that's downtown center. so the goal is to turn this area into a town center from a retail. do they want to do that by building around the existing mall parking lots people i spoke with had mixed views about the project. >> the stones town revitalization project has been 4 years in the making with the community and the city of san francisco. that's according to brookfield properties. the company behind the proposal, the company declined an interview with kron 4 but shared these renderings of the project that

include plans for a civic town center, affordable housing neighborhood, open spaces and retail. it would be good for the businesses and for the whole community. something new josef martinez live near stonestown galleria for decades after hearing about new plans to transform part of the area into new homes. pretty surprised that they're they're going to do because it's been like that for, you know, as long as i can remember since the 70's, it's a good area. and it's it's a great place to be. you know, they got libraries here and, >> you know, schools and things will get educated it's a great place. >> no, not a good idea. i i object that but this woman who worked at the shopping center says the neighborhood has enough already. >> we need we need them all. you know, mean. >r builders are just building building and building. houses. what? we don't need the san francisco planning commission has been gathering public input since last year. >> in a series of social media

post, mayor london breed wrote the project will create a vibrant town center saying in part, quote, 3500 new homes, including housing for seniors, students and families, 6 acres of publicly accessible parks. plazas new jobs in both construction and permanently on site onsite childcare to support families, funding for park improvements, transit funding to make muni more efficient. >> and the project still requires approval by the planning commission and board of supervisors. we did reach out to city officials about this project. we have not yet heard back in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> gayle, thank 6 year-old boy was killed in a car crash in richmond amadio alvarez junior was a passenger in a car. his family says a drunk driver crashed into the accident happened last wednesday at cutting and carlson boulevards. his family says amadio like to practicing sports with his dad and hanging out with his teammates. he played with the richmond little league as

families now asking for community support as they try and cope with this unexpected funeral and medical expenses. meantime, a search is underway in san francisco for the driver who hit a bob's donuts employee. jesus is a a husband and father of 2 is still unresponsive in the hospital tonight sunday morning around 03:00am was found unconscious on the ground near bout to boost avenue and got out street. police say he was hit by a car while riding an electric scooter officers say he didn't have any id on him, but he was wearing a bob's donut shirt. so they called the shop. the manager says they knew something was wrong when he didn't show up for his shift to is the sole provider for his wife and 2 children. just 3, 5, they live in mexico. a gofundme has been set up to help them. state senator scott wiener's street safety bills passing the senate transportation committee today package ncludes 2 new laws aiming to

reduce traffic deaths. one of them requires speed safety devices to be installed in new cars made or sold in california. the technology would let speeding drivers know to slow down using audio and visual warnings. senator wiener is hoping to have the devices included in every new car by 2032. a second law requires caltrans to design and fix roads for pedestrians. cyclists drivers and transit riders. marin county and the city of sandra fell or getting millions of dollars to help. >> people in britain's largest urban encampment kron four's. leslie goodman joins us live in the newsroom tonight to break down what this means. good evening, lester. >> yes, good evening. that's right. in a joint effort between the 2, both the county and the city as sandra fell worked together over the next 3 years to help individuals living in an encampment around them, a home creek path. now i spoke with the saint roch bells mayor who says this is a chance for them to do more.

>> the city of samara fell. marin county are receiving a grant for nearly 6 million dollars to help those living in an encampment along home creek path. the money is coming from the state's encampment resolution majority of these funds will be through case managers support support services who work with folks want want to find out. what is that hurdle? what is it that they need? what is the next step to go towards permanent supportive housing. according to mayer, calling of sandra fell, the money will allow them to provide interim housing and social services to over 60 people living there step will be finding agency who can do that. hands-on work in really engage deeply with folks it will be working with the county to make sure that whatever system agency with they're bringing works of what we're already doing. the mayor says they plan to partner with nonprofits like saint vincent de paul society of marion, who has done outreach to those living in encampment. so we already know who they are. and with that funding, we're

looking at county providing case >> and then the city helping with finding transitional places for people to stay. well, we help them get housing, voucher or other some sort of subsidized housing. now with this program, the brain health and human scent human services and city will have 3 years to help those and this encampment and they plan to meet the next couple weeks to discuss the next steps. now reporting live in newsroom. let's going kron 4. >> kron 4 is your local election headquarters and san pablo rent control activists submitted more than 1000 signatures to the city clerk to get a renter protection legislation package on the november ballot. the proposed package calls for rent stabilization tenant, anti harassment and just cause evictions renters would also be able to file petitions with the city manager. if the landlord fails to make necessary repairs. landlords

can also file petitions with the city if they feel they're not getting a reasonable return on their investment. the contra costa county registrar of voters has 30 days to approve the more than hp1600 signatures. >> let's get you a check of the forecast now taking a live look at the golden gate bridge where we have a lot of cloud cover. i'm wondering when the clouds will go away and we all are even through the wipers on for a second. lawrence is here with. >> the outlook as we move forward. yeah, a little wet out there as we had a little drizzle along the coastline, especially we could see a little more of that overnight tonight. and we may actually see a couple raindrops. >> as we head in toward late thursday and friday. so things a little bit unsettled most that's just weak system. the swirling off the coastline. but all those clouds moving well inland. this looking from the east bay hills back on over the bay and well, very cloudy along the coastline will not many folks out there walking along the beach. very cool on the coastline with a sea breeze and also all that cloud cover outside the winds gusting 15 to 20 miles per

hour around the bay area, especially near the coastal sections. your steel still seeing the southwest wind. but that's going to switch gears. i think as we head toward a lot of part of tonight is that are low pressure swings a little further to the south. now off the this is what we're dealing with, ok? so, yeah, we've got the little swirl off the coastline right now. we've got a cold front developing out there right now in the middle of the pacific. and this is going to be the one. not going to be huge system of going to drop in the bay area late on thursday into friday to at least bring us a chance of a few scattered showers as we head to friday. of course, some cooler temperatures too. here's the good news, though. i that our low pressure that's been spinning off the coastline that's going to kind wind down ahead for the south high pressure. going to sneak in here for one day. you can see that cold front getting a little bit closer, but not before. i think tomorrow, a decent day, at least outside with some mild temperatures in spots. temperatures warming up in the 60's. many areas may be in low 70's warmer spots, but plenty of cloud cover overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. you see that on tap. maybe some drizzle too. i think as we get in toward tomorrow, those winds switching more of a
