altercation breaks out between pedestrians and jose mayor matt mahan security detail. a new initiative in san francisco targets overnight corner stores and the tenderloin all in an attempt crackdown on the drug market. we'll talk about that. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> well, good wednesday morning. if people with this bright and early the kron, morning news table 24th i'm reyna harvey. all right. well, we want to start you off with a look at weather. we started out the and then we just are to solely just cool down a bit haha. >> getting cooler as the days go by. and today is looking like a good one. if you like that cooler feel a little bit of cloud cover. i know yesterday for some of us i've been hearing from his with that sunshine go. but today, if you did enjoy that cooler feel yesterday, going to be a follow-up to it. look outside at downtown san francisco got

a few clouds that are passing overhead today. much like yesterday that mid-level stratus is going to be seen today. you're going to notice a bit of a muggy feel to it, though. southwesterly flow is going to transport some humid air across the region. so it's going to have a bit of a different feel to it than yesterday. as for winds, not as breezy as yesterday was, but generally a southerly wind into the bay. again, you will see anticipate that muggy feeling today, along with some cooler feeling temperatures 40's to 50's for current temps right now. hayward at 59 oakland and concord at 57 degrees. some mid 50's across the north bay. as for temperatures later on today, we're saying and 60's today, nobody really getting up into the 70's this afternoon. a cool. and as i mentioned, muggy feel to be expected us for your roads. what we've got out there is pretty smooth so far this morning. bay bridge, 8 minutes to make your crossing there and nothing close to any backups just yet. san mateo bridge also rolling at the limit thus far traffic

yet to pick up on both the richmond center fell and the golden gate. most cloud cover is hanging out above bridge level. so visibility has been okay, rania. all right, john, thank you for that. let's turn now to a big story. so the san jose city council approved a proposal. >> to build 150 new affordable housing units in the southern part of san jose. this is right off of the great oaks exit off of highway 5. mayor's office says and once the new houses built homeless people who might live in rv's and encampments around are going to asked to either except shelter or they have to leave. what was that moment? has that story? >> well, it was here at san jose city council last week were councilors approved the contract to get the ball rolling on this housing project in south san jose, a neighborhood where mayor matt mahan tells me there is a significant number of unhoused people there. and he says once this facility is constructed, they will offer shelter numerous times to the unhoused people there. and if you do not accept it, they will be

swept. >> right now, it's an empty lot. but soon a housing complex will stand with 150. a small step to help bring the thousands of currently unhoused people in san jose get off the street. yes, it is very difficult. sharon lee has been at this encampment between and monterey road for a year. kate. he's speaking outside. scary. she says volunteers used to take trash out of their encampment. that stopped 3 months ago. she also says there are rumors that this camp will be swept. i was on the waiting list since. 2018. that's 6 years. she's waited for housing. she hopes that wait will be over with this new facility gets built in her backyard. one is that the neighborhoods to take on solutions homelessness should see the immediate benefits. mayor matt mahan says the beds will first be offered to those unsheltered in the immediate area. >> those who have refused and remain will be abated. the

>> well, a new affordable housing project underway in oakland sites located on east 12th street and second avenue in the lake near eastlake neighborhood. 91 units are going to be design is permanent supportive housing for unhoused individuals and their families. this is among the first project to break ground funding from measure affordable housing infrastructure, yvonne, that was passed in 2022. happening today. the man who attacked former house speaker nancy pelosi's husband. he's going to be sentenced today in court. david, the pat was found guilty of attempted kidnapping of a federal official back in november of last year. now facing a possible life prison sentence for his failed attempt at kidnapping. the former u.s. house speaker back in 2022, that's going to start at 10:00am today. meanwhile, a juvenile was arrested for attempting to carjack a woman in san bruno. this happened monday right of the 7 a block of san felipe avenue. police

okay. some really tense moments in downtown san jose yesterday when mayor matt mahan. >> one in the middle of interview with kron 4 crew captured a physical altercation between the mayor's security detail and a pedestrian san jose. police say the situation started when the man started acting erratically towards the mayor and staff and hostile. it's a plain clothes officer assigned to the mayor's detail, tried to de-escalate the situation many times. the man even more agitated eventually hit the officer. police say several bystanders help detain the man and he was eventually taken into custody, say the officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. police say the man is facing several charges including felony battery of an officer. we're told tales police plan to hand over the case to the district attorneys office. tesla, they are laying off more people after an earnings report showed a steep decline in sales. tesla

executives announcing more than 2700 people on the lose their jobs as 1000 of them work in fremont palo alto executive reveal their net income dropped by more than 50% in the first part of the year. a transportation analyst said these cuts rsa the company, a couple of billions of dollars. comes as google firing people after they protested the israel-hamas war. so last week, more than 20 pro palestinian workers are fired after they held a sit-in protest at google's office in sunnyvale and new york. now, the company says additional employees were fired after an investigation revealed the identities of the people who wore a mask, a group representing the workers says more than 50 employees or fired. they say they were protesting the company supplying the israeli government with ai technology. still ahead of the crowd, the morning news people in the south bay goodbye to a burger joint. that was in business since the 60's.

southern california is going to be more exposed to areas of rainfall from this passing low-pressure area that is diving deep, digging into the jet stream allowing us the school down. we've been seeing. but we also see especially come friday or own opportunity of at least an isolated shower or 2. let's time out the next couple of days here. so today we are going to see a lot of cloud cover. a few sprinkles. really? just misty areas up in our upper elevations out towards the coastline. tomorrow, predominantly dry during daytime hours, although thursday night could see a few isolated sprinkles working through on into friday morning. seeing that same chance of isolated sprinkles. but take a look at this side of the screen over here as we move into your friday afternoon. and you can see those areas of yellow, orange, red. that's the under storm development out towards the central valley in the sierra nevada towards friday are areas that are easily going to be the most active. so where is the bay area sees just a drop or 2 water for some areas. we will be looking at much more activity up in the

sierra and in some cases that will be a little bit of snowfall. now, snowfall is going to be our higher elevations. this is spring snow at this point in just a few inches of it again, pretty high up and this year towards the weekend. as for temperatures today, you're going to notice a similar feel to it is compared to yesterday. as i mentioned with that muggy air field, burlingame at 65 degrees today, foster city at 66 south bay. temperatures mostly in the upper 60's with san jose at 69 today, east bay temps falling out of yesterday, 70's where we barely hang on to them. and today just a little bit cooler. even our warmest spots like antioch in pittsburgh, only hitting 69 degrees today. a look ahead at tomorrow show. similar temps friday is going to be our coolest one. that slight chance of sprinkles here in the bay. chance of thunderstorms for southern california in the sierra nevada. that after that, we really calm things down, although we don't warm up too terribly much. most of us will stay in the 60's to low 70's well into next week. as for

governor gavin newsom is expected to announce a new bill arizona because of arizona's extreme abortion ban. so he's joined the california legislative women's caucus to announce a new effort to help those from arizona who are seeking abortions. then 10, 30 this morning comes just days after the arizona supreme court ruled that a law firm 18 60's that was abortion is all cases except when the pregnant person's life is in danger was constitutional. if approved that the law would allow doctors from arizona to come to california to provide abortions. california lawmakers rejected a bill aimed at cracking down on how utility companies spend customers money so per state rules. california's investors own utilities are not allowed to use money from customers to pay for things like advertising are lobbying. supposing is money from private investors. david, things like some groups are accusing these companies of going around the rules. for

instance, using customers money to pay for tv ads. skies is public service announcement. the bill would have expanded the definitions of these standards allowing regulators to find utilities that might break the rules. monday marked the second time the propose a bill to pass a legislative committee. vice president kamala harris announcing new rules for staff in nursing homes so they require nursing homes that received medicare, medicaid funding to be adequately staffed under the rule. every facility with 100 residents need at least 2 registered nurses to be compliant as well as 10 mourners aids into nursing staffers. the vice president says the new rules are going to help staff who are dealing with harassment and burned out. >> residents, this will mean more staff, which means fewer er. this is potentially more independence families is going to peace of mind in terms of your loved one being taken care of repair work is going to be more time with their

year last few days were some more. was finally got a little break from the heat. good morning yesterday was much cooler. and today we're going to keep that cool feel around. can't see much of anything in this view from mount tam as that. we do have that mid-level cloud cover back across the bay area and blocking our view is from our mountain tops. we are going to be seeing another day that brings partly to mostly cloudy skies. but this time around as a bit of a muggier feel to it. so words yesterday was a bit brisk at times today. you're going to notice that humidity drifting in from the south ahead of that low pressure system. so we still have a southerly wind across the bay. that wind has relaxed a little bit, but we are going to be feeling cool. temps, cloudier skies and yes, that muggy feel that you will notice that you're getting out there mid to upper 50's across the bay area for current temperatures. hayward and alameda eats at 58 59 degrees right now. later today we are going to see daytime highs hanging out in the 60's. so from the 50's this morning to the 60's later on today, there's not a huge amount of temperature change

years maximum in prison after being convicted back in november. now, let's get right to the surveillance footage. this has obviously been seen millions of times. this is what happened back on october 22nd 2022. when david de pap went to the pelosi home in san francisco, looking to talk to then speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. nancy pelosi was not home at the time she was in washington, d.c., but home at the time was her husband, paul pelosi, who woke up and saw pap inside their home. he called 9-1-1 and was cool on the phone with the dispatcher basically speaking in code not to alarm to pap. that's somebody broke into their home. police officers came to the home. that's when they found a path. and paul pelosi at the front door. they tried to defuse the situation, but that's when david de pap hit paul pelosi in the head with a hammer. he had to be rushed into emergency surgery. and at last check, he is still

recovering from his injuries. the path was found guilty back in november, assaulting an immediate family member of federal official, which, of course, is nancy pelosi. and then kidnapping. he faces again 50 years in prison. he would be 93 years old if he serves all 50 years. but his trouble is far from over because he's also being tried in state court for attacking paul pelosi and also on the table is the chance that he could be deported because he is a canadian national who came into the u.s. in the early 2, thousands on a visa that expired. so he never should have been in the country in the first place. we will be in the courtroom when sentencing weekends back to you. all right. well, thank you for that right down there. >> let's head to the north bay because marin county and the city of samara fell. they were awarded nearly 6 million dollars to address the main creek path. homeless

police department says their command staff tracks crime trends deploying more officers to areas experiencing crime. >> they've also expanded foot patrols to 2 sergeants and 12 officers. greer says his restaurant is not the only business in oakland experiencing multiple break-ins. it's why he wants the city to offer grant money to owners experiencing a loss of revenue because of burglaries. reporting the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> happening now, pro gaza and palestine. protesters, our station a sit in on the caldor click campus. so this is video from sproul hall yesterday. protesters have dozens of tents along the bit. banners and signs of support for the people of gaza and palestine. they are demanding the school call for a cease-fire. so students walking to class expressed support for the protesters. some jewish students say they've been harassed for months and they feel that the universities just let them down. i think that the students using their power and their privilege to uplift other people,

especially those. >> suffering from a genocide is extremely important. uc berkeley doesn't care about your students prioritize your safety. >> and it isn't care of, you know, we are forced to learn in an environment that is not conducive to one in which we feel welcomed. >> or let alone say fun. the university says that with just 3 weeks left in the school, getting want to protect the right to free speech. >> they also make sure that the school run smoothly and safely. the protesters are also demanding that the university and act a financial boycott of israel. the school says that's not on the table. have jewish relations community council. they released a statement in response to the demonstration. it reads, quote, we are carefully monitoring the emerging anti israel protests uc berkeley which appear to be inspired by the deeply anti semitic, columbia encampment, responsible for harassing and blocking jewish students from accessing their campus. it goes on to say, quote, while

their words are abhorrent, the protesters at uc berkeley, they have a right to free speech and assembly and no violence or obstruction has yet been reported. we are in conversations with the administration who are committed to ensuring jewish safety and participation. the time is now 5.37. and a plea deal was reached in the murder of a home depot worker. the worker was shot and killed lack of funding a shoplifting suspect. this happened in pleasanton well versed kerman talk with the victim's mother who helps set up that plea deal. >> 26 year-old blake most was shot and killed a little over a year ago while working as a loss prevention officer at this home depot in pleasanton. police say he was shot after confronting a woman for shoplifting. that woman was later identified as benicia naps. she was eventually charged with murder and her accomplice. david guillory was charged with child endangerment and accessory to robbery. now is the 2 are set
