plan. kron 4 sarah stinson joins us in the studio after visiting the neighborhood. sarah. >> tonight, it ended event aimed at celebrating the tenderloin, but in front of all, was the open drug market. people who live in work in this neighborhood say they deal with this every single night making them feel unsafe. mayor breed says they've made strides at improving street conditions in the daytime. but at night they still face i% challenges. she believes her new proposal will help. >> one couple, i'm not. i'm not the tender 9 while making loves living in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood, she says there's one big problem. she doesn't feel safe at got is the home lot about the illegal vendors hanging hundreds of hanging out in front of our building. and i want to be able to go out at night he's going to be able to walk my dog at making was at the small business tuesday night touring and celebrating 5 businesses in her neighborhood. she got the opportunity to express her

target one area. they move to another. and so it's frustrating. yeah, but should you be punishing the locals? you know, and one neighbors owner says no, please don't. it's going follow this. thank you, sir. some very tense moments in downtown san jose today. >> when mayor matt mahan, he was in the middle of an interview with kron 4. our camera crew captured a physical altercation. as you can see there between the mayor's security detail and a pedestrian in an email sent only to kron 4. san jose police say that the situation begin when the man started displaying erratic behavior toward the mayor and the staff and then grew hostile. they say a plainclothes officer assigned to the mayor's security detail tried to de escalate the situation several times. but the suspect grew more agitated and eventually hit the officer. several

bystanders helped in detaining the suspect. he was eventually taken into custody. the officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. the man is facing several charges now including felony battery on a police officer. and we're told that san jose police, they do plan to hand the case over to the county district attorney's office, our camera crew, of course, as use either captured the entire incident. you can find the full video on our website at kron 4 dot com. another big story we're following tonight. tesla announcing a wave of layoffs after a new report showed a steep decline in sales kron four's grant lotus here studio with how. >> just how many bay area employees are expected to be. let go. can. these aren't the only things. but elon musk is polarizing at a lot more companies. >> are now making electric cars. so tesla says they're going to be making sweeping layoffs, affecting every sector of the corporation in the bay area. thousands of workers in fremont and palo

alto are expected to be laid off more than 400 of those are just from the freeman facility. today's earnings report showed tesla's sales dropped nearly 55% since last year. >> so it's not surprising that tesla did some their sales have declined significantly in the last quarter. and that really tapered off. they've that really running with a lot of excess capacity right now >> industry experts believe these job cuts will earn tesla, billions of dollars. we're also learning tesla tried to produce a lower cost electric car somewhere around the $25,000 mark. but admitted to shelving the product. so they're not doing that. ken vicki, back to you. all right, grant, thank you. a man is in the hospital tonight after police say he was hit while riding a scooter in the city's mission district. >> police say it happened early sunday morning at davos avenue and guerrero street.

they say the driver left the scene. a gofundme for the victim says the man is an employee of bob's donuts in the polk gulch neighborhood. they say the man is unconscious and fighting for his life. anyone who has any information about this is asked to call san francisco police. police in fairfield are looking for the person responsible for hitting and killing a pedestrian. >> early this morning, police say an officer found the victim dead on air base parkway about one am investigators still trying to identify the vehicle and the driver responsible. >> well, turn out to be a much clouds and rolled in and boy took a long time to break up. some places didn't see much sun it all up tomorrow morning. those clouds are rolling back in and here we go. maybe even some drizzle early tomorrow morning. 06:00am. temperatures going to be cool in the 40's and the 50's not much changed by 8. if you're headed out the door on your commute, but you can

expect cloudy skies across the entire bay in the valleys as well. and then slowly warming up. we may begin to see things break up a little bit of some of the interior valleys. staying cool, though, for most of the day. >> thank you, lawrence. leaders in san jose are adding 150 new beds to try to get unhoused people off the streets. the new facility is being planned in the southern part of san jose. mayor's office says said once that new housing is built, people who live in rv's and encampments around it will be asked to accept shelter or lead for shaq moment joins us live from san jose after talking with the mayor there, jack. >> well, yeah, that's right. it was actually here at city council just last week were councilors approve. the contracts to get the ball rolling on this housing project in south san jose. it's an area and a neighborhood where the mayor tells me there is a significant number of unhoused people there. and he says if they do not accept the city's repeated offers for shelter when this new housing project is built, they will be swept.

>> right now, it's an empty lot. but soon a housing complex will stand with 150. that's a small step to help bring the thousands of currently unhoused people in san jose. get off the street. yes, it is very difficult the people. some people here are not very nice. >> so still unknown and the trash is not going to pick has been at this encampment between and monterey road for a year. >> okay. he's speaking outside. scary. she says volunteers used to take trash out of their encampment. that stopped 3 months ago. she also says there are rumors that this camp will be swept. i was on the waiting list since. 2018. that's 6 years. she's waited for housing. she hopes that wait will be over with this new facility gets built in her backyard. one is that the neighborhoods to take on solutions to homelessness. >> should see the immediate benefits. mayor matt mahan

know, the entire city. the oakland police department says their command staff tracks crime trends deploying more officers to areas experience in crime. >> they've also expanded foot patrols to 2 sergeants and 12 officers. greer says his restaurant is not the only business in oakland experiencing multiple break-ins. it's why he wants the city to offer grant money to owners experiencing a loss of revenue because of burglaries. reporting the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news, former san jose fire captain is being accused of trying to meet up with a minor. >> investigators in san francisco, sacramento, rather say that spencer parker was arrested in sacramento during a child predator sting operation. the san jose fire department says that parker's last day was march 31st. he had been been with the department since 2008. the san jose fire department tells us in a statement, quote, no criminal activity is tolerable in our service and the types of crimes described by the charges or be on trail of public trust under

particularly reprehensible when committed by someone sworn to public service. parker is set to appear in court tomorrow morning. >> protesters at uc berkeley have been staging a sit-in on the count campus in front of sproul hall this morning. protesters set up dozens of tents along with banners and signs showing support for the people of gaza and palestine. they're demanding that the school call for a cease-fire in the conflict between israel and hamas. some jewish students say they've been harassed for months and feel the university has let them down. but others walking to class express support for the protesters. i think that the students using their power and their privilege to uplift other people, especially those. >> suffering from a genocide is extremely important. uc berkeley doesn't care about your students prioritize your safety. >> and it isn't care of, you know, we are forced to learn in an environment that is not conducive to one in which we feel welcomed. >> or let alone say fun.

>> the university says it was just 3 weeks left in the school year and wants to protect the right to free speech, but also make sure the school run smoothly and safely. google has fired at least 20 more workers following protests over the company supplying the israeli government was ai technology amid the war in gaza last week, workers held sit-in protest said google offices in sunnyvale and in new york. initially google said more than 20 workers are fired to protests. the company says the additional employees were fired after its invest investigation revealed the identities of the workers who are wearing masks during the protest. a group representing the workers say more than 50 employees and all were fired. congress has passed legislation to ban or force a sale of tiktok. >> earlier today senators gave their opinions on if map should be banned. >> currently, the chinese communist party is able to gain unlimited access to the account information of tiktok users.

>> if a president biden does sign that bill, it could still take years for the ban to actually take effect the company that owns tiktok bytedance would likely challenge the law. any decision might end up under review by the supreme court. and if the company loses, it would still get a year to find an american buyer. our 4 zone forecast as we get a live look right now at downtown san francisco. a little chilly out there tonight. yeah, lawrence, word spring go. yeah, it's gone again. as we saw big changes in the weather around area today. the low clouds. >> fog surging onshore. really? never entirely breaking up before starting to move back on shore again. and so that's where we sit tonight. the clouds gathering outside already and more that going to be in place tomorrow morning. even a little drizzle likely out there as we head through the night to do so. yeah, what a change we had in the past. 24 hours is temperatures really taken a tumble, some places much as 16 degrees cooler in concord and livermore number just yesterday. you're in the 80's. a nice and warm 9 degrees

cooler san jose. 10 degrees. cooler hayward, 11 degrees cooler in santa rosa. so big change in the pattern. these temperatures went from well above the average to well below the average today. highs topping out generally in the 60's across most of area, 60 in san francisco. 63 degrees in oak of 66 in san jose yesterday here at 83 degrees. 65 degrees in lemore. 65 in concord and 65 degrees in santa rosa, you can thanks to that because the onshore breeze that continues out there this evening. coming up on the south, we've got area of low pressure off the coastline. so that counter clockwise rotation bringing some of the fog again up from the south and move moving further on shore in this kind of a deep marine lacey spinning around out there and that low pressure center bring us some of that moisture onshore as well. even some drizzle out along the coastline. some thunderstorms in northern california to tonight. that fog kind of just settling in and hovering across much of the bay and moving into the valleys now will be there in place tomorrow morning. after you get up, though, that fog should begin to clear out just a little bit. but but it's

>> san francisco nurses delivering 2000 pages documenting unsafe working conditions to the health commission's office today, the city's department of public health nurses union recently surveyed members about their experiences of assault and abuse on the job more than 94% reported being verbally abused on the job. 70% reported being physically assaulted. 10% reported being sexually assaulted or harassed in the workplace. health insurance giant united health group says it will take several months to identify and contact patients whose private data has been leaked. the health insurance company says it suffered from that ransomware attack in march. the admission comes a week after a hacking group began to publish the stolen private data of patients. the company says a substantial proportion of people may be affected, but didn't say how many the company says it will be offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for people who are affected by that attack.

>> francisco is getting panned as but now the city needs to fund raise to help maintain them at the zoo. francisco mayor london breed is asking the board of supervisors to pass a resolution that would allow various city departments to begin raising money from private entities. so far, there's no speific timeline on when the pandas will be arriving in san francisco. that timing depends on the construction of an enclosure at the zoo. not yet known how much that enclosure will cost, but the mayor says that taxpayers will not have to pay for it. >> coming up next, it's been more than a year now since an east bay home depot worker was shot and killed while trying to stop a suspected shoplifter. now his family is coping and helping put the

10, 30 a plea deal has been reached in the murder of a home depot worker. that worker was shot and killed while confronting a shoplifting suspect in pleasanton her car for kerman. talk to the victim's mother. >> who helped set up that plea deal? >> 26 year-old blake. most was shot and killed a little over a year ago while working as a loss prevention officer at this home depot in pleasanton. police say he was shot after confronting a woman for shoplifting. that woman was later identified as benicia naps. she was eventually charged with murder and her accomplice. david guillory was charged with child endangerment and accessory to robbery. now is the 2 are set to go to trial. a plea agreement has been reached with naps, pleading guilty with the sentence of 19 years to life and guillory pleading

units will be up for grabs. eligibility is based on income. the deadline to apply is may 3rd for more information. this is the link there on your screen, which don't see but go to kron 4 dot com or housing dot a sega of sheriffs association says that there's a deputy shortage and they're calling on the city for some help. they sent out a letter to city leaders and the sheriff's office asking for more hires. the association says that deputies are working an average of 28 hours of over time per week. they say that some sheriffs or even facing health risks due to lack of sleep. san pablo has appointed its next police chief captain brian blue bar has been with the police department for 21 years and has been serving as interim chief. his first official day as chief will be may 1st. let's step outside. give you a view of the weather at to telegraph hill tonight. you know, and if you are

stepping outside, you're going to want to wear a sweater, a little light coat because, yes, get chilly. run right back has been kind of cool out there, especially from 24 hours ago. these temperatures taken a major hit. all that mpisture in the atmosphere. you get that breeze blowing, too. and yet it feels chilly. >> around the bay area, we'll see more of those clouds developing throughout the night tonight pushing well onshore into the bay in the valleys. and that's where we'll start out your day tomorrow up toward the golden gate bridge. he a little drizzle out there early on tomorrow morning. so roadways might be a little bit slick out there in spots. so watch out for that early tomorrow. and then those clouds only really partially clearing around the bay area. i think even in the afternoon will likely see some lingering clouds even inside the bay. and of course, along the coastline. so cooler this midweek and then us a slight chance of showers coming our way as we head toward thursday into friday. so with that being said, temperatures out the door right now, you've got many 50's out their vast majority in the 50's. only 60 in hayward at this 0. 56 degrees in napa. 51 in calistoga 54 degrees in timber

on that area of low pressure just swirling off the coastline. you can see that just kind of wrapping around because of that circulation yet that suddenly circulation bringing that fog low cloud cover. well onshore so that marine, the marine layer out there little drippy early on this morning to see more of that overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning to is that southerly flow will likely continue. then as we head through the day tomorrow, that begins to sag a little further south. you're going to see a lot of clouds slowly breaking up into the afternoon, but never fully clearing out around the bay area. temperature-wise, how about 50's into downtown san francisco cooler at the sunset out toward the beach is probably not much of a break in the cloud cover. probably cloudy all day long inside the bay. you'll see some sunny breaks, but not totally clear. 50's low 60's working the way down the peninsula. more sunshine temperatures warm up a little bit. some place in the south bay getting near 70 degrees by tomorrow afternoon. east bay may just hit 70 in lemore. 67 in pleasanton about 64 degrees in breezing castor valley. 67 degrees becoming sunny in the afternoon. walnut creek in 68 in fairfield back

aspiring educators path to solvency accelerated by a pressing need for more school leaders. after my 3rd year of teaching, i had to leave the classroom because i couldn't afford to live here. let go of the veterans for a cheaper and possibly more youth connected workforce. keeping status quo and your not advance. keep pace with society and your community is left to step behind the modern days. business society stuck with balancing loyalty and profits. we are actively recruiting at this time. there has to be a way to combine both up and comers with proven go getters. this isn't apprenticeship model. >> and that time to be mentors and to grow is is protected through this saint mary's college of california in moraga and the san ramon valley unified school district's partnership. >> alludes to a successful launch to an enduring partnership. it's going to be our faculty and our staff supporting our graduate learners as they go on this journey to become educators.

earlier this month, the school district and smc help their first joint presentation. introducing the institutions teachers for tomorrow residency program. what we want to do is have a >> strong balance between the clinical practice side. >> and the academic side so aspiring educators are coming in. they're they're getting the academic theory and they're also getting a strong practice in the field. graduate students over coming in equity, pursuing careers as teachers who otherwise would focus on higher paying jobs. instead an opportunity to advance their passions in education. we have limited number of spots >> to be able to provide an offer to people. program pays each teaching apprentice $32,500 to combine a year's worth of classwork at saint mary's college of california and a concurrent year of mentorship from a san ramon valley unified school district
