people upset with the conflict in israel and gaza has created a sit in in the main plaza. >> for cal berkeley's sproul hall tuesday morning, protesters had set up dozens of tents along with banners and signs of support for the people of gaza and palestine. they are demanding that the school called for a cease-fire in the conflict between israel and hamas over the past several months, protesters have caused disruptions on campus. in march. the university had to evacuate attendees at an event organized by jewish student groups. when pro-palestinian protesters gathered outside. it's ball pause on tuesday. some students walking to class expressed support for the protesters. i think that the students using their power and their privilege to uplift other people, especially those suffering from a genocide is extremely important. this is created an environment on campus. that's >> very. >> i'm comfortable. >> but some jewish students say that they have been harassed for months, feel that the university has let them down. uc berkeley doesn't care about your students prioritize

your safety and it isn't care of, you know, we are forced to learn in an environment that is not conducive to one in which we feel welcomed. >> or let alone say fun. >> the university says that with just 3 weeks left in the school year, they want to protect the right to free speech, but also make sure that the school run smoothly and safely. we'll be ready to take any steps necessary to ensure that the university's operations aren't disrupted by this protest. >> and those operations obviously include teaching learning and research. >> so far it's unclear how long these protesters plan to remain on campus. >> alright, back live the protesters are also calling on the university to create a financial boycott of israel. school says that that is not something they are considering. but for now in the east bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you. and the jewish community relations council released a statement in response to the demonstration. it reads here.

in part, we are >> carefully monitoring the emerging anti-israel protests at uc berkeley, which appeared to be inspired by the deeply anti-semitic columbia encampment, responsible for harassing and blocking jewish students from accessing their campus while their words are of here at the protesters at uc berkeley have a right to free speech and assembly and no violence or obstruction has been reported. we are in conversation with the administration who are committed to ensuring jewish safety of participation. and another northern california campus has been closed because of those similar demonstrations there. california state polytechnic university in humboldt making the announcement on its website. the campus will be closed through tomorrow. the school says this is for the safety of the campus community as protesters continue to occupy siemens hall, the demonstrations started last night. buildings are locked down. key cards are not working and classes are being done remotely pro-palestinian

protest emerging several colleges and universities all across the country. more than 130 demonstrators arrested yesterday after refusing to leave an encampment that they set up at nyu. about 60 people were arrested at a similar protest on yale's campus. more than 30 tents were set up at the university of michigan. 9 people arrested after setting up an encampment at the university of minnesota. it was last week that more than 100 columbia students were arrested for occupying a space on campus for more than 30 hours. the school says the decision was made following reports of, quote, intimidating chance and several anti-semitic incidents. all elasses there are now remote because of safety concerns and at least 20 more google employees have been fired, bringing the total there to more than 50 people following protests over the company's involvement with israel. at issue for the protesters, a 1.2 billion dollar contract signed in 2021. for google and amazon to

provide cloud computing and artificial intelligence services. last week demonstrators took part in sit in protest at google offices in sunnyvale and new york. the latest firings came after an investigation revealed the identities of more employees to google says physically disrupted co-workers. new at 2, we have learned tesla is laying off more than 3300 employees in california. the majority of them are in the bay area. more than 2700 employees work in fremont and palo alto. this is according to the california employment development department. the remaining employees work in burbank and left prop. the layoffs will begin in june. we have reached out to tesla for comment. we are waiting for a response and we'll keep you posted. taking a live look outside of this very cloudy tuesday. has not really gotten much more sunny out much sunnier out there today. meteorologist kogan here now details. cloudy out. they win. i wouldn't mind being wrong. just want to say, but sadly, it's cloudy, folks. just like

we said, it was going to be. and here we are. so. >> obviously can see that as we take a live look at the golden gate bridge. you also see a little bit of wind out there. so little breezy as well. we were yesterday in the afternoon, too. >> you can see this is picked up to 15, 16 miles per hour, san francisco and out of the coast. but even higher than that, if you head inland spots like fairfield, getting a little delta breeze going to low pressure is sitting right off the coast here and it is tossing some energy towards california. >> and for us, obviously, it's cooled us down. but notice ride goes over towards this year. it's actually popped up a few showers out there, too. we have a little lightning earlier as things kind of started to get that up. lift up the slopes. but you can see for us, it really is just the cloud cover. and that has plenty enough to cool down 50 degrees right now in san francisco. a check of the difference. yesterday. we were getting up to the 80's in spots like a livermore. concord, napa, santa rosa and down in san jose. and today you can see we're not even at 60 degrees in santa rosa were 59. so big difference and talk about the difference. i have this graphic that shows you exactly how much cooler it is.

yesterday. the restaurant sharing a photo of a shattered glass door at the restaurant's entrance announcing their temporary closure because of the break-in last month the restaurant owner said he was considering leaving oakland following a 3rd break-in. we have reached out to the owner but so far have not heard back yet. shutting down some businesses in the tenderloin. san francisco mayor london breed announcing a new initiative that would do just that. it's aimed at cracking down on drug dealing in the neighborhood. it would prohibit some retail stores that sell pre-packaged food or tobacco from operating between the hours of midnight and 05:00am brie to set to present the board of supervisors with this plan. the mayor's office says she developed the plan after getting input from stakeholders in the neighborhood and also community members. other businesses, including restaurants, bars and event halls with not be impacted. police have arrested a san jose fire department captain after they say they caught him

in a child sting operation in sacramento. this bay area firefighter was just one of 24 suspected internet predators arrested. kron four's. michael thomas has the latest. >> the sacramento county sheriff's office says that the san jose fire captain was just one of many in a position of public trust that was caught trying to meet up with young girls. this is video from the sacramento sheriff's office says they arrested 24 suspects at the end of march during a three-day child predator sting operation grown adults ranging from age 22 men in their 70's trying to meet up with young girls and have. 43 year-old spencer parker, a san jose fire captain was part of those arrested and is now facing charges from sacramento county district attorney's office which were filed on april 3rd, the san jose fire department says his last day of work was march 31st. he was then placed on administrative leave on april. 11th but resigned the following day. he had been with the department since july of 2008. no details have been given on parker specific case. but investigators say some

predators persuaded detectives to send pornographic photos and even make plans to meet up at a hotel room with kids that were 13 years old, some even 10 years old, but a knock at the door and they were greeted by deputies. it's like having your and a. >> trying to hold it back. it is at prolific. i don't care how smart or how sophisticate you think your son or daughter is. coming up with a child battle lines period. >> the san jose fire department tells us in a statement, quote, no criminal activity is tolerable in our service in these types of crimes described by the charges are beyond betrayal of public trust and are particularly reprehensible when committed by someone sworn to public service. spencer parker is set to appear in court tomorrow as we get more details. we'll keep you updated. that's a very latest here in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas will send it back to you live in the studio. >> coming up, oakland about to break ground on a new 100% affordable housing project. got shovels out here. we'll see what it will look like and where the funding for it will come from. plus, the second

>> in the north bay, crews are going to be working all week to fix the sauce. little peer in hopes of getting the ferry service back up and running again. the ferry route between san francisco in sausalito. he's been out of service since

friday night. the route inspection found damage to one of the piers for piles at a ferry spokesperson says while work to repair the pile started over the weekend, they can only do that work during low tide so it could take a little while. and the suspension of service is impacting about 500 people every day. >> it was kind of surprised because i thought it's easy to fix, but they could kind of looks like it's not easy to fix. so putin. it's not going to last. too >> until the repairs made golden gate transit is providing bus service to and from the city. the pier was built back in the 70's. officials say there is a plan to replace it, but that construction has not started. 3 historic oakland based black, indigenous and people of color. developers are celebrating the groundbreaking of a new affordable housing development in the city. the site is located east 12th street and second avenue in

oakland's lake merritt that east lake neighborhood, a quarter of the 91 units are designated as permanent supportive housing for unhoused individuals and families. this is also the first projects to break ground with funding from measure you and affordable housing infrastructure bomb that was passed. former president trump's social media posts could be getting him into trouble today. the judge in his new york criminal trial held a special hearing to decide whether his post violate a gag order. our washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt explains what happened. >> former president donald trump's high stakes criminal trial was briefly interrupted on tuesday for a fight over a gag additional the judge issued a gag order. barring the former president from publicly criticizing witnesses. but trump posted anyway lashing out his former lawyer michael cohen and adult film star stormy daniels. prosecutors argued the judge

should find georgetown law professor david super calls trump's post a clear violation of the gag order. if you or i were subject to this gag order and we tweeted like that would be locked up in a flash. but >> you and i are about mister trump. he says the judge is unlikely to put trump in jail over this book could find the former president, although super says that may not have much of an impact on trump's behavior from his perspective, jails off the table to foreign server outlook. so he's going to do what he wants to do. the judge is expected to make a decision about that in the coming days. in the meantime, the trial continued the testimony, the former publisher of the national enquirer told the jury that donald trump was directly involved in a scheme to buy than bury negative stories about him during the 2016 election. order material is frankly a bit of a sideshow. that testimony is what really matters. the trial is set to resume with more testimony on thursday in washington. i'm hannah brandt. the u.s.

supreme court will hear arguments this week to determine whether former president trump is immune from. >> federal prosecution. he's been charged in federal court in washington with conspiring to overturn the result of the 2020 election. the justice department argues no president is above the law. however, mister trump's lawyers say presidents are entitled to absolute immunity and are attempting to have the charges against him dismissed. they say the office of the presidency cannot function if a president is worried about criminal charges being brought against them. it is jean is expected sometime in june. we're also learning this afternoon about another near disaster involving planes on a very busy runway. so here's what happened when a pilot about to take off realize there were 4 other plates suddenly in his way. >> tonight. have know, to listen. >> you >> so switch there now praising its quick thinking

pilot for refusing to take off. the faa is investigating how and why air traffic controllers allowed for planes to cross the runway after that's with their jet had been cleared for takeoff. this is coming after a similar incident at washington. dc's reagan airport. the faa says it will increase the amount of rest time that air traffic controllers will be required to take between shifts. but the union representing those controllers say the move will only make staffing shortages worse. we're taking a live look outside from our camera on top of mount tam blustery out there right now. little drizzly, maybe as well. kyle is here now to over the weather for this afternoon after this. >> where you want to be wearing short know. i mean, look at the winds to seize whipping around, maybe not the place to take a hike >> little better out of half moon bay, but it's still very gray. very chilly out there. so if you do head out, take that jacket with you along the coast. they've also been having a little drizzle to see that again tonight. so just make sure you're ready for that. if you're headed in that direction. having said that

temperatures, it's all about the cool temperatures, right? we've got a lot of 60's out there 50's out at the coast. you can see also in san francisco, no 70's on the map and head to the north bay. and we're not even getting into the 60's in some spots here. as you can see, santa rosa petaluma sitting at just 59 degrees. i mentioned it's a little bit windy out there. so take you through future wind here just to show you these are the gusts and you do see the heavier ones kind of out here or at san francisco. but, you know, also as you head over to fairfield, 22 miles per hour as we get later into the afternoon, things will start to ramp down as we get into tonight. but that's something else kind of keep an eye on. it's all about the low pressure that's sitting right here. it is dragging some energy in and you do see where we are getting as you zoom in here, all of this lightning. so any of these kind of coastal mountains that are over here and mountain ranges that are over by this year as well, when get a little bit that upslope lift, they're getting a little bit of instability going on and starting to see some showers and some lightning. now we don't have any of that here in the bay area. but check this out. what a well-defined

circulation we've got, right? you can see exactly where these clouds are coming from as they get dragged in here by this system. so it is hanging out off the coast and this is going to show you temperatures, right? so obviously cool down as you see some of the green and yellow kind of move into the oranges. high pressure has moved away from us. low pressure is going to track by thursday. it's going right over the top of us. that's where going to get the most chance of a little bit of a shower and drizzle. but then as we get into the latter part of the weekend, high pressure does move in a little bit. we get very zonal. so neither high nor low pressure really winning with that means as we go back to kind of normal temperatures. so we look at map as an example here. the average high 73 degrees. we'll stay below that until we get to about sunday. and then that's when things change. so as far as rain is concerned, it's not going to be much thursday into friday, but i want to show your 7 day forecast really quickly the chance for that. it's right there, right thursday into friday. that's when the temperatures bottom out, getting the weekend gets an back and we get back to some really decent temperatures. back to all right. thank you. so after a

fda issuing a recall of a popular brand of avocado oil. the agency says primal kitchen. the glass bottles are prone to breaking as they were sold in stores in several states, including california and online. these 750 milliliter bottles have best when used by dates between august 19th through the 21st of 2025. anyone who purchased this oil should throw it out. and then contact primal kitchen for instructions on how to receive a refund. kroger and albertsons announcing a revised plan as it seeks to gain approval from federal regulators who've been trying to block a merger. the company's now plan to sell about 580 stores. 2 new hampshire-based cms as part of a proposed 26.4 billion dollar merger. 63 of those stores are here in california, although it's unclear which stores would be in the sale. cns will be paying about 2.9 billion dollars for the stores. kroger's ceo says the sales to

moraga and the san ramon valley unified school district's partnership alludes to a successful launch to an enduring partnership. that's going to be our faculty and our staff supporting our graduate learners as they go on this journey to become educators. earlier this month, the school district and smc hope their first joint presentation introducing the institutions, teachers for tomorrow residency program. what we want to do is have a strong balance between the clinical practice side and the academic side. so aspiring educators are coming in. >> they're they're getting the academic theory and they're also getting a strong practice in the field. graduate students overcoming inequity pursuing careers as teachers who otherwise would focus on higher paying jobs. >> instead, an opportunity to advance their passions, education. we have limited number of spots >> to be able to provide an

offer to people. program pays each teaching apprentice $32,500 to combine year's worth of classwork at saint mary's college of california and a concurrent year of mentorship from a san ramon valley unified school district teacher with live classroom experience. >> they will earn a teaching credential sanctioned by the state and all but guaranteed district teaching job after the apprenticeship. >> and residentb see the way i'm able to live and survive in the bay area right now is with trail. plus, socal native tyler cardenas is a student teacher in oakland's teacher residency program the uc berkeley alarm earned his bachelor's degree from cal and is currently paying below market on his rings. and as part of his tuition paid for through the residency program, which compensates aspiring teachers from learning how to be an educator and do so while learning from mentors. >> target nice. also benefits from the nonprofit rio plus, teachers rooted in oakland, a

to really focus on filling some of our most challenging teaching positions and special education and stem. the oakland teaches residents. the initiative is also actively recruiting. >> philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> happening right now, applications are being accepted for a new affordable housing project in fremont. the lottery waitlist is for the fremont family apartments on fremont boulevard. 27 rental units will be up for grabs. eligibility is based on income. the deadline to apply is may 3rd. in the south bay, 160 unit apartment complex on the east side of san jose is supposed to be one of the many solutions to homelessness in the area. however, there are complaints now coming in from multiple people who live inside of that complex. it's called the renaissance place right off of center road tenants are reporting water leaks and expose fiberglass in the hallways. they also say there's open drug use that happens inside the apartment complex with little to no supervision from property

still the atcc where the warmth still is and where the cool down is happening. las vegas right now, 87 degrees. but if you head to the central part of california, now we're in the 70's and along the coast, just the 60's and has everything to do with that cloud cover that is out there and low pressure system sitting offshore yesterday. this time we're talking about low 80's in our inland spots. and now, you know, i've got a couple places like santa rosa, the late sitting in the upper 50's. so if you are headed out to sea, the giants take on the vets tonight. they're going throughout that first pitch about 6.45, just make sure you're ready for it. have your jackets could be a little chilly out there. we could even see the potential a little coastal drizzle. so i think it's not unheard of that. we could see a sprinkle or 2 and mostly cloudy skies. what you get into the evening. so again, just make sure you're ready for it. be a little cool, a little breezy out there as you go out to the. but looking ahead, we are going to be stuck with this cool weather for a couple of days. you can see through tuesday, wednesday, thursday, even into friday and then we will start to see a change as things pick up when we get

driving some of that wind. our ways you can really see if they're right, the direction of with that kind of clockwise circulation and bringing in some interesting weather up in the mountains to where they're getting a little bit of rain, a little bit of lightning, too. but for us, it's about that cloud cover as we go throughout our evening, we are going to see the marine layer bill back in and notice. we're going have that coastal drizzle out there too. so we wake up tomorrow, very similar to today. kind of a repeat forecast where we start off with that heavy cloud cover little bit of drizzle along the coast and then we kind of work our way through a cool day yet again tonight, unfortunately or maybe fortunately catch a glimpse of it. but it's a full moon tonight. it's getting tough to see the clouds. we should be a little bit mild temperature wise, though, with that cloud cover that does help to keep us relatively warm to upper 40's to low 50's temperature trend wise. we're kind of stuck in these doldrums for a little bit. he writes, i'm taking san jose's an example here. we roll right through the week and we start to pick it up a little bit as we get towards the weekend. but it really isn't until sunday that we start to see a move to the next pattern here. so let's
