bay area are remembering the life and legacy of glide church founder cecil williams. >> and the outcry for a cease-fire in the war between israel and hamas now making its way into bay area college campuses. we're live at that student at uc berkeley. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. news and news. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waldman. protests set elite u.s. educational institutions are happening today. students at uc berkeley are demanding a cease-fire in gaza and for the university to end connections with companies linked to israel. kron 4 charles clifford joins us now live from the uc berkeley campus with the latest here. thanks for joining us. >> well, good afternoon. you know, protest are nothing new here in the cal campus. but a group of people upset about the conflict in gaza between israel and hamas are digging in here. it's was a jewish students. we talked to say that they're worried about anti-semitism and the

university is hoping to just get through the last few weeks of school safely. >> and for that, cal berkeley's sproul hall tuesday morning, protesters had set up dozens of tents along with banners and signs of support for the people of gaza. they are demanding that the school call for a cease-fire in the conflict between israel and hamas over the past several weeks. protesters have occasionally cause disruptions on campus. back in march, the university had to evacuate attendees at an event organized by jewish student groups. when protesters gathered outside the university says that they want to protect the right to free speech, but also make sure that the campus run smoothly and safely as the school year draws to a close. so we have 3 weeks left in the semester. and so the universities decided to prioritize the academic needs and interests of those students who want to attend class. >> and finish the semester. and so we'll be ready to take any steps necessary to ensure that the university's operations aren't disrupted by this protest and those

operations obviously include teaching learning and research. these protesters are also demanding that the university and act a financial boycott of israel. but the school says that's not on the table. there are no plans to change the university's investment policies or practices. so far. it's unclear how long the protesters plan to remain here on campus. >> back live now coming up on kron. 4 news at 2 o'clock today. we're going to hear from a spokesperson from the jewish student union get their reaction to what's happening here on campus. but for now in berkeley, charles, clifford kron, 4 news. >> thank you, charles. the jewish community relations council released a statement in response to the demonstration that reads we're carefully monitoring the emerging anti-israel protests at uc berkeley which appeared to be inspired by the deeply anti-semitic columbia encampment, responsible for harassing and blocking jewish students from accessing their campus. while their words are appearance. the a protester use at u c berkeley have a right to free speech and

assembly and no violence or obstruction has yet been reported. we are in conversation with the administration who are committed to ensuring jewish safety and participation in campus life. and university protests are spreading nationwide. police say 133 protesters, we're taking taken into custody yesterday after a protest at new york university, california cal poly. the university also humboldt announcing that its campus will be closed through tomorrow after demonstrators occupied a building last night at the university of michigan protester set up more than 30 tense in connecticut. police arrested 60 protesters at yale and yesterday that included a 47 yale students after they refused to leave an encampment since the war began. colleges and universities have struggled to balance safety with free speech rights. many long tolerated protests. but they're now doling out more heavy handed discipline. and

the jewish holiday of passover began last night and people here in the bay area worried about security at local synagogues. they're worried because the tensions over the war between israel, hamas have sparked protests in the bay area around the country leading to both horizon islamophobia and anti-semitism. 2 weeks ago, a local synagogue was awarded a security grant from the state to pay for extra guards during passover. >> sad situation that we have to rely and security were thankful to the state of california for giving this security grant. but it's really a shame that we have to do this. >> the local rabbi says these cards will help the congregation to celebrate without the worry us being attacked. a san jose fire department captain arrested after allegedly getting caught in a child sting operation in sacramento. the bay area firefighter was just one of 24 suspected internet predators who police arrested kron four's. michael thomas has the story.

>> the sacramento county sheriff's office says that the san jose fire captain was just one of many in a position of public trust that was caught trying to meet up with young girls. this is video from the sacramento sheriff's office says they arrested 24 suspects at the end of march during a three-day child predator sting operation grown adults ranging from age 22 men in their 70's trying to meet up with young girls and have. 43 year-old spencer parker, a san jose fire captain was part of those arrested and is now facing charges from the sacramento county district attorney's office which were filed on april 3rd, the san jose fire department says his last day of work was march 31st. he was then placed on administrative leave on april 11th but resigned the following day. he had been with the department since july of 2008. no details have been given on parker specific case. but investigators say some predators persuaded detectives to send pornographic photos and even made plans to meet up at a hotel room with kids that were 13 years old, some even 10 years old, but a knock at the door and they were greeted by deputies. it's like having your and a.

>> trying to hold it back. is that prolific? i don't care how smart or how sophisticate you think your son or daughter is an adult coming up with a child battle lines period. >> the center's a fire department tells us in a statement, quote, no criminal activity is tolerable in our service in these types of crimes described by the charges are beyond betrayal of public trust and are particularly reprehensible when committed by someone sworn to public service. spencer parker is set to appear in court tomorrow as we get more details. we'll keep you updated. that's a very latest here in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas will send it back to you live in the studio. >> save alameda for everyone. the group leading the effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price holding a rally at the alameda county administration building this morning. they're calling on the county supervisors to set a date for the recall election during next tuesday's meeting. now that enough signatures, they say have been verified.

of 94. he left behind a very large legacy. kron 4 sarah stinson spoke with folks at clyde and community leaders about his life. >> within the first hours of reverend cecil williams, passing people filed into glide memorial church in san francisco monday night to honor him. this man of peace. >> this man of justice passed away peacefully. i'm hearing about i really can't believe it. record williams was the co-founder of glide. he was also a civil rights and lgbtq activist. >> was a larger than life figure. minister marvin white intern for williams when he was 18 years old and has become his protege. he says he'll never forget with the reverend told him he said. >> i need for you to be you. >> glide put up photos of williams over the years with people of all walks of life from political activists like bobby seale and angela davis to politicians like nelson mandela and celebrities like

marvin gaye in sammy davis, junior williams was also close friends with former san francisco mayor willie brown. more than 50 years. yeah. my friendship with cecil williams. >> in valuable and for me. it will never end. >> brown says he worked with williams and doctor martin luther king junior in the 60's during the civil rights movement before williams helped open the church. merry christmas to you. the reverend was known for making everyone feel like family opening the church doors to all making the institution. one of the most liberal churches in america, 2 women to poor folks to workers. >> 2 black folks to brown folks too early. organizers. >> on and on and talk to him laugh and joke and feel like i was many say williams was not the same after the passing of his wife in glide, co-founder, janice america, tony, in 2021.

>> gas prices are soaring in the bay area and many are wondering when drivers are going to get a break and whether it will come before the start of the summer vacation season. kron four's will tran has more. we are getting reaction from drivers this morning and it is not a happy reaction because people like chloe are filling up. >> you went in there and you said $50 is probably all you can afford right now. what do you think about gas prices going up and up and up? yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. i mean, i remember pandemic prices. it to 50 at one point. so most kind of triple now. >> this is one of the more expensive gas stations do you shop around or you just need the gas this morning? i just needed gas this morning. i will shopping around in the city is pretty difficult,

though. i feel like a lot of the other gas stations are. this price, if not maybe a little bit higher. this is a little higher than the california average of 5.45. starts 5.69. doesn't make me feel better, right? you don't want to waste gas looking for cheap gas. yeah. exactly. and you say it's about $100 to fill er up. >> and now it's about it's getting close to 75. yeah. probably a few months ago, as i could say 40 45. >> yikes. that's a big difference. i know you're going raise the gym so they work off your frustration. thank you so much for that. will swing our camera over here and we'll show you the gas. price is $5 and $0.69 at this shell gas station across the street. a chevron, you're looking at 5.69, as well. just to make it, you know, little saturday for everybody. i drive gas car as well. so this is what we are facing its $0.4 more this week. $0.21 more since last month. $0.59 more since the beginning of the year. take a look at your screen really quickly. we want

to show you some of the gas prices all over the bay area. let's start off in napa county. you're looking at 5.72 this morning. marin county in the middle your screen. 5.63 contra costa county 5.53. and santa clara county, $5. and $0.52. and i wish i can give you some good news. a chloe still here says biden looking at her bank account. unfortunately, we will continue to climb and climb the climb because they say it will peak in july. talk about our forecast now with this live look outside at the embarcadero clouds winning today. we have meteorologist kyla grogan in the weather center with details are going to see. >> any breaks and not likely we could see a few here and there, but it's really going to be cloudy day today. for the most part. you can see it as we take a live look from the east bay. it's cooler. i think that's really the big picture here is yesterday. we got up into the low 80's in spots like santa rosa ca kurt san jose. by the way, we also got there in livermore.

>> and napa yesterday, san francisco just up to 62 because obviously we did have the cloud cover here yesterday for quite a bit, too. but today, look at the drop in these temperatures. i'm expecting more than 20 degrees. you know, drop in some spots 15 to 20. we're looking out for 60's for inland spots today as opposed to 80's. that's a big difference. and you can see that's where we are already in san jose at 62. 64 in dublin, just 59 in berkeley. 58 here in downtown san francisco. and you work your way up to the north bay. you can see those clouds really hung out a bit because we're still just in the upper 50's. that's why not expecting a whole lot from temperatures today. now we are a little gusty out there. we're going to see that wind continue. it is a southerly flow. and you see that very pronounced today. you can see it will continue get a little bit of a southwesterly push as we get into the afternoon. but just look out for that. if you're going to be on any of the bridges today going cross, if you're in a high-profile vehicle, you'll likely feel that. so this is our low pressure sitting off the coast. it is certainly bringing the clouds here. notice it's bringing a little energy towards the sierra were some lightning is picking up a

few showers as well. look at that. well defined swirl. that is right there. you can see how its driving all those clouds in. so as i mentioned, highs will be limited today instead of 80's. we're looking out for 60's inland, maybe a 70 degree mark, a spot like antioch. but obviously it's going to be a much cooler run. and as we kind of look at this, low pressure is in control of the kind of stays there until we head into about friday. this is thursday. we do have that chance of a sprinkle come in thursday into friday. then we get zonal again, as you see things kind of even out here in those temperatures will pick up a little bit as we get into sunday monday. so if you are in napa as an example, the average high of 73 and you can see here that we're not going really get there until we get sunday sunday monday. so a little bit of a cool run. i'll be back a little bit. we'll talk more about your 7 day forecast. happening tonight. paul to teachers will hold a rally asking for better pay because of the high cost of living in the bay area. >> members of the educator's association say talks with the

policy unified school district have now broken down. that rally is for 6 tonight at the pa usd office on churchill avenue. in the north, a crews are going to be working all week to fix the sausalito pier in hopes of getting the ferry service back up and running again. the ferry route between san francisco in sausalito has been out of service since friday nights. a routine inspection found damage to one of the piers for piles say ferry spokesperson says while work to repair, it began over the weekend. they can only work during low tide so it could take a little while the suspension and services impacting about 500 people a day. what kind of surprised? because i thought it's easy to fix. >> but they could kind of looks like it's not easy to fix. so putin. it's not going to last. >> until the repairs made golden gate transit is providing bus service to and from the city. the pier was

built back in the 70's. officials say there is a plan to replace it all together, but that construction has not started. a street takeover dirt bikes and oakland sent one person to the hospital and oakland police say about 50 bikers drove through several areas of the city causing safety hazards. >> as they went through yesterday, kron four's rob nesbitt reports now on how sideshows have evolved over time and how police are trained to respond. >> you'll often hear them before you see them. the cell phone video shows dirt bikes and atv's taking over parts of bellevue and grand avenues in oakland sunday popping wheelies and weaving through traffic just after 01:00pm around 50 dirt bikes were seen circling lake merritt, some riding on the sidewalk, driving in the opposite direction of traffic. and even turning public parks into

their own personal playground. oakland police say several of the bikers cause a safety hazard to those around them and the illegal sideshow activity ended in one injury. this was the scene at grand avenue in perkins street just after 06:00pm sunday when police say a vehicle collided with the motorcycle and the driver of the motorcycle had to be taken to the hospital. they were last listed in stable condition. i asked the oakland police department what the protocol is for sideshows involving dirt bikes and atv's. their statement saying in part, quote, officers do not immediately surround or block off the sideshow. participants but rather a says the number of sideshow participants and spectators threats to public safety safety concerns for the officers and resources available to address the sideshow. once this information is obtained, the incident commander will devise a plan to address the sideshow appropriately. opd says sideshows in the city of all from late night street race is too large weekend gathering strong participants from all over the bay area. the shift that has led to public safety concerns including gun

35 death penalty cases are now under review and alameda county due to the possibility of misconduct by prosecutors. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price says her office uncovered what may be a pattern of misconduct that dates back almost 30 years prosecutors may have purposely excluded black and jewish people from juries. kron four's. dan kerman reports. >> recognize how terrible this and it is something that we have to make right at a news conference monday. alameda county district attorney pamela price said a federal judge has ordered her office to review 35 active death penalty cases going back nearly 50 years. >> for prosecutorial

misconduct, certain prosecutors and the alameda county district attorneys o-fice may have intentionally appeared to have intentionally excluded jewish and black jurors from death penalty cases prices. these prosecutorial notes suggesting the exclusion of blacks and jews from juries was discovered when her office was reviewing the appeal of ernest. a 51 year-old man convicted in 1993 and sentenced to death in 1995. for the murder of a 9 year-old in the attempted murder of his grandmother during an attempted robbery discovered notes were shared with the federal judge in the dikes case who ordered a more thorough review. the evidence that we have uncovered suggest plainly that many people did not receive a fair trial in alameda county. and as a result, we have to review all of the files. >> to determine. what happened and what the appropriate remedy price says that review is now underway and loved ones of those harmed by those on

death row. >> are now being informed of what's going on. she says the alleged misconduct is not limited to just one or 2 prosecutors and doug's case is not the only one that suggests similar misconduct. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> happening today, nurses in san francisco plan to rally for more safety in the workplace. the san francisco department of public health nurses union recently surveyed members about their experiences of assault and abuse on the job more than 94% reported being verbally abused on the job. 70% reported being physically assaulted and 10% reported being sexually assaulted or harassed in the workplace place at 3 o'clock this afternoon, nurses will deliver 2000 pages of documents saying that these unsafe working conditions are happening there, handing that over to the health commissioner's office on grove street. in the south bay, san jose apartments meant to help

people come out of homelessness. now facing a slew of complaints. there were reports of break-ins and drug use and tenants a little to nothing is being done to fix the issues. kron four's jack molmud reports. its been held since i've been there. >> genome monarch has been at the renaissance apartments for 4 years. she talks to us with 3 other tenants. all of these people say they don't feel safe living. there is tremendous amount >> and a lot of the andes i have been broken into my apartment exactly 10 times due to says when she reports these issues to property management. >> they're either met with silence or retaliation. i have many people that has just wanted to packet grab a kid least in there because not making it better and that claim to gina and others hits close to home. >> the apartments are run by charities, housing and are meant to be the first housing for people who haven't had a place to call home. they stay here for 2 years and then go on to a more permanent

apartment. many of the people who stay here are recovering from years of living on the street. levi send witness. >> someone hitting at a woman. lisa mooney says her first year at these apartments she would still sleep outside. >> claiming it wasn't a stressful opposed to living inside. it's kind of discouraging 2 years ago, san jose spotlight published report of similar concerns and even reported apartment employees filming attorneys who were investigating the property apartment management denied the allegations reported by spotlight. everything got better. theresa tovar. a tenant of 2 years says she also sleeps outside her apartment most nights. she shows us the complaints filed against the apartment at letters her family wrote to those in charge. she says, though she is not hopeful anything will be fixed. it just makes no sense to me that things that they do. there's just it right like i as to karl, my kid. now we brought all of these concerns from the multiple tenants that reached out to us to the owners of apartment complex.

>> we did not hear back yet any side. san jose jacmel but kron 4 news. >> and a live look now here at sfo. the clouds certainly covering this shot. here. we have colleague or go in the weather center with details on what's happening outside today. >> yeah, it is a cloudy day. a cooler day today. we probably want to grab your jacket on the way out the door thought. we look at a look at the national picture here. you can see there's just meant basically one system that's rolling through parts of the ohio valley and into the northeast. temperatures right now are a pretty even split between really nice and warm. if you look at the 70's in southern tier and then a little bit cooler as we head to the north. and of course, we have cooled down here on the west coast as well. you can see bakersfield at 70 degrees. if you want some heat, you're going to head all the way over to las vegas today to find those 80's there at eighty-four degrees at this hour, we have the other hand are firmly in the 50's and 60's. you can see antioch made it up to 67. but san francisco downtown, just 58 degrees. same story up in santa rosa. those clouds are hanging on and just some low 60's around the bay. the difference to

these temperatures from 24 hours ago to now is significant. if you're in nevado or santa rosa or concord, we're talking 18 degrees cooler half moon bay. the only spot that is a little bit warmer than they were this time yesterday. but that's because, of course, they stayed in the clouds all day long. if you're headed to the game tonight, the giants taking on the mets at oracle park about 6.45, make sure you do take that jacket. we're talking 50's and cloudy skies tonight. we could even see a little bit of coastal drizzle again tonight. so just want to be ready for that. and looking ahead here, obviously, the clouds are going to win the day, not just today, but tomorrow. and on thursday into friday, we actually have a slight chance of drizzle. i'll have better news for you, though. on the other side of that, i'll be back with that part of the story in just a bit. thank you. baltimore leaders are accusing the ship's owner and manager of negligence and calling for them to take full liability for that tragedy of the bridge collapse reporter. yeah. marius si se tells us more about this. >> just a month ago the

baltimore bridge went down with the dali cargo ship crashed into it, which killed 6 construction workers and caused a lot of damage at the patapsco river and also of the huge impact on the board of baltimore. now baltimore leaders are accusing the cargo ship, owner manager and even the crew for negligence. they say the singapore-based company and their crews should have known whether the dali cargo ship was in good shape to travel before trying to leave baltimore. but there could be something that may get in the way just days after the crash, the cargo ship company actually filed the petition for a limited liability for the collapse. they're asking for cap of 43.6 million dollars. now, ultimately the decision of how much the company could owe will be in the hands of the mail and for the record. but this could be one of the most expensive disasters in history. and the court documents filed by the baltimore mayor and city council. their attorneys wrote petitioners negligence caused them to destroy the key bridge and single-handedly shut down the port of baltimore. a source of jobs, municipal revenue and no small amount of

pride for the city of baltimore and its residents. vice president kamala harris denounced the new rules for staffing, nursing homes, harrisonville these new standards monday that >> requires nursing homes that receive medicare and medicaid funding to be staff to the right way under this rule, every facility with 100 residents needs at least 2 registered nurses to be compliant as well as 10 or more nurse aids and to nursing staffers. harris says the new rules will help staff who are dealing with harassment and burnout. >> this will mean more staff, which means fewer er. this is potentially more independence families is going to peace of mind in terms of your loved one being taken care of repair work is going to be more time with their patients, less burnout lower turnover. >> the new rules are set to be implemented in phases allowing facilities time to prepare for the new requirements. the

>> we're just a couple of days away from the 2024 nfl draft. so who are the forty-niners going to pick kron? 4 sports reporter kate rooney is at levi stadium with a look. it's hard to believe that we're already back at levi stadium talking football after all, a lot of forty-niners fans are still recuperating from the team's devastating loss in the super bowl. >> back in february. but the players are back here on the premises for voluntary workouts. and of course, forty-niners brass is prepping for the nfl draft. coming up on thursday. the team has 10 picks in this year's draft including a first round pick for the first time since 2021. will have the 31st overall pick. general manager john lynch explained his approach for how they're bolstering the team's roster through the draft this season. >> we've identified where we you know. we want we want to add some people in this draft.

>> and certainly at the golden gate bridge least we can see the bridge today yesterday. we could hardly see it. we also have a little bit of wind out there. you can see the trees wrestling a bit as we take a live look here at quite hours. so temperatures obviously reflecting the fact that we have the clouds out there and we are much cooler. no wild 80's today, folks. we are at 56 in san francisco, 60 in oakland, low 60's. all the ways you can see from san jose to livermore to concord, santa rose even below that just 58 in half moon bay. 55 degrees. so i mentioned we're a little breezy. you've got the southerly flow is. we've got low pressure kind of sitting off the coast that will be with us throughout the day today and notice some of this energy. and you see that swirl of clouds right there showing you where that low pressure system is. it is setting not just the clouds in, but you notice a little bit of energy making it to the sierra and kicking up a little lightning up in elevation as we get that uplifted, there is a kind of goes up so today we'll have the clouds with us. you can see by tonight it's going to really rebuild back in notice that coastal drizzle possibility yet again. so that

means we wake up tomorrow morning. not only do you have some of the fog to contend with in the clouds, but perhaps a little bit of a wet road as well. i think particularly for the north bay. now tonight happens to be a full moon. i did actually catch a good glimpse last night here in san francisco. i know not everybody was able to see it, but if you do get some clearing tonight, check it out. it should be beautiful temperatures about 47 to 52 degrees and certainly the clouds are going to be a part of the taking san jose is an example. you can see these temperatures are going to just be hanging out in the below average range as we head through saturday. now on the other side of that, things are going to start to improve. and you see that here, right? as we head into sunday and monday, we get back to what our really seasonal temperatures in some beautiful sunshine. so i think the weekend is looking pretty good. but obviously, today, tomorrow we're going to have this cloudy skies clear temperatures thursday and friday we add and a chance of a little bit of drizzle, slight chance of a shower. i don't think it will be much. we'll be measuring it in 107 inch. but we'll certainly be the day that you're going want to have that jacket with a hood with you. and then as we get to the weekend, right on cue, we get a little sunshine
