>> the leader whose whose path we can continue to follow remembering the life and legacy of glide church, co-founder cecil williams sound. the community is honoring him tonight. when fun time from the bay area's local news station. >> you're watching kron. 4 news. >> thanks for joining us at 10. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne. tonight. we continue to honor the reverend cecil williams, co-founder of san francisco's glide church passed away today at the age of 94 leaving behind a massive legacy. kron 4 sarah stinson joins us in studio after visiting glide and talking with community leaders there. sara. >> glide memorial church in met people who worked with the late reverend cecil williams. many telling me they feel privileged to have known him at all and grateful for the work he did to serve those in the community influencing people across the world. >> within the first hours of reverend cecil williams,

passing people filed into glide memorial church in san francisco monday night to honor him at this man of peace. >> this man of justice passed away peacefully. i'm hearing about i really can't believe it's record. williams was the co-founder of glide. he was also a civil rights and lgbtq activist. >> was a larger than life figure. minister marvin white intern for williams when he was 18 years old and has become his protege. he says he'll never forget with the reverend told him he said. >> i need for you to be you. >> glide put up photos of williams over the years with people of all walks of life from political activists like bobby seale and angela davis to politicians like nelson mandela and celebrities like marvin gaye in sammy davis, junior williams was also close friends with former san francisco mayor willie brown. more than 50 years. yeah. my friendship with cecil williams. >> in valuable him for me. it will never end.

>> brown says he worked with williams and doctor martin luther king junior in the 60's during the civil rights movement before williams helped open the church. it was supposed to be just a methodist church. >> but it really was not just a methodist church. it literally was a village. >> activists, merry christmas to you. >> the reverend was known for making everyone feel like family opening the church doors to all making the institution. one of the most liberal churches in america, 2 women to poor folks to workers, 2 black folks to brown folks too early. organizers. >> on and on and talk to him laugh and joke and feel like i was many say williams was not the same after the passing of his wife and glide co-founder janice mayor in 2021. there. >> many times that he would.

to say. you know, i mentioned a little bit earlier about the the singing in the joy of snus. >> now when you're there, but the holidays and they would invite all volunteers to just, you know, put on the gloves in the apron serve peopl in it. and it really was a very uplifting. and and let us hope that that continues. i love going there on easter christmas thanksgiving covering all the work that they do on the holidays. i got to interview him a couple years back are some whispering my ear. pretty cool. he's got to interview him because you know how much longer he'll be around cut today. i said thank goodness that all right. nice for era. tonight, san francisco mayor london breed releasing a statement about to williams saying in part that he led with compassion and wisdom always putting the people first and never relenting in his pursuit of justice and equality. governor newsom also releasing a statement saying in part williams and his congregation offered refuge in support to all who enter their doors.

their tireless work to empower marginalized members of the community with them at the forefront of key social justice and human rights issues driving positive change. all of us can take inspiration from his legacy. other news tonight, developing story. ferry service is still out at the sausalito peer forcing about 500 people to take other types of transportation to and from the city. >> crews say they'll be working all week to fix it after an inspection found damage to one of the piers for piles. the ferry route from san francisco to sausalito has been out of service since friday. a spokesperson says while work to repair the pile began over the weekend, they can only work during low tide. >> it was kind of surprised because i thought it's easy to fix, but they could kind of looks like it's not easy to fix. so putin. it's not going to last. >> until the repairs are made, golden gate transit is

providing bus service to and from the city of the pier was built back in the 1970's officials say there is a plant replace that peer altogether, but that construction has not yet begun. looking ahead into next weekend barred is upgrading one of its tracks in the east bay meeting that they plan on suspending service between rockridge station. >> and oakland in the lafayette station. the agency says free buses, though, will be available to bart riders as a result of the closure. bart says to expect about a 20 minute delay. >> well, thanks to get the change today. a big change coming our way for tomorrow as the weather really going to start to cool down quite a bit. in fact, the of wake up weather early on tomorrow morning. you'll notice all the clouds in our skies early tomorrow. that fog will moved inside the bay. some of the valley's do temperatures in the 40's and 50's at 06:00am by age you head out for the commute. still plenty of clouds lingering in our skies. temperatures in the 50's across the board. maybe a little break in the valleys by 10:00am or so and maybe inside

the bay, but not much 50's and 60's. much cooler around the bay area tomorrow. a dirt bike or ended up in the hospital after police say roughly 50 bikers are seen popping wheelies and weaving through traffic yesterday afternoon in oakland. >> they say one of the bikers ended up hitting a car near lake merritt. that person was sent to the hospital. no word tonight on that person's condition. >> man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries tonight after being hit by a car in san jose. police reported just before 1 o'clock this afternoon, the man was walking in the area of south first street in hollywood avenue when he was hit. no word on the driver at this time in sonoma county. police in healdsburg are looking for the person who stabbed a 16 year-old last night. police say it happened about 10, 30 on foster creek pathway near carso . warner skate park. police say they found the teen with stab wounds in his back.

that person is expected to be okay. police did not provide any description of possible suspects. new at 10 police in gilroy are looking for a man they say shot a person at a grocery store parking lot. a police releasing these pictures of the suspect today. the shooting happened last month in the parking lot of hill foods. officers say that the suspect and the victim got into an argument. before the gunfire. if you happen recognize this man, you're being asked to give gilbert police a call a south bay apartment to meant to help bring people out of homelessness is now facing a slew of complaints. irvine reports of break-ins and drug use. >> kron four's jack moment talked with residents from the renaissance apartments who say little is being done to fix the issues. it's been since i've been there. >> genome monarch has been at the renaissance apartments for 4 years. she talks to us with 3 other tenants. all of these people say they don't feel safe living. there is

tremendous amount >> and a lot these i have been broken into my apartment exactly 10 times due to says when she reports these issues to property management. >> they're either met with silence or retaliation. i have many people that has just wanted to packet grab a kid least in there because not making it better and that claim to gina and others hits close to home. >> the apartments are run by charities, housing and are meant to be the first housing for people who haven't had a place to call home. they stay here for 2 years and then go on to a more permanent apartment. many of the people who stay here are recovering from years of living on the street. i come out of the elevator and actually buy send witness. >> someone. >> hitting a woman, you know, and added to my saint around and go back in elevator because i've not exposed my child to lisa mooney says her first year at these apartments, she would still sleep outside. >> claiming it wasn't a

stressful post, a living inside. it's kind of discouraging 2 years ago, san jose spotlight published a report of similar concerns and even reported apartment employees filming attorneys who are investigating the property apartment management denied the allegations reported by spotlight. everything got better. know theresa tovar. a tenant of 2 years says she also sleep outside her apartment most nights. she shows us the complaints filed against the apartment at letters her family wrote to those in charge. she says, though she is not hopeful anything will be fixed. it just makes no sense to me that things that they do. there's just it right like i as to karl, my kid. >> yeah, you know, like should be in my unit was my child. now we brought all of these concerns from the multiple tenants that reached out to us to the owners of this apartment complex. we did not hear back yet any side. san jose jacmel but kron 4 news. it's hard. 2 celebrate festival of freedom when our people are hostages. >> still ahead, an east bay rabbi making sure his jewish

prosecutors just conduct that the alameda county da. >> says purposely excluded blacks and jews from juries kron four's. dan kerman has the story. >> recognize how terrible this and it is something that we have to make right. >> a news conference monday, alameda county district attorney pamela price said a federal judge has ordered her office to review 35 active death penalty cases going back 30 years for prosecutorial misconduct. certain prosecutors and the alameda county district attorneys office. >> may have intentionally appeared to have intentionally excluded jewish and black jurors from death penalty cases. >> prices these prosecutorial note suggesting the exclusion of blacks and jews from juries were discovered when her office was reviewing the appeal of our mistakes. a 51 year-old man convicted in 1993 and sentenced to death in 1995. for the murder of a 9 year-old and the attempted murder of his grandmother during an attempted robbery.

the discovered notes were shared with the federal judge in the dikes case who ordered a more thorough review. >> the evidence that we have uncovered suggest plainly that many people did not receive a fair trial in alameda county. and as a result, we have to review all of the files. >> to determine. what happened and what the appropriate remedy price says that review is now underway and loved ones of those harmed by those on death row. >> are now being informed of what's going on. she says the alleged misconduct is not limited to just one or 2 prosecutors and doug's case is not the only one that suggests similar misconduct. price says she doesn't know how many of the 35 cases involve misconduct, but she believes more than one. she also says none death penalty cases may also involve misconduct. dan kerman kron, 4 news for more insight into this story. kron 4 legal analyst and former

prosecutor michael cardoza joins us michael, you've been >> criminal law in the bay area for many years. and you work in alameda county. i'm not going to say it your tell me, do you know anything about this going back 30 years? was this kind of thing actually happening? >> well, not to my knowledge. it wasn't happening. i left there in 85. i to my knowledge, it wasn't going on that end in this particular case, i remember the case and i've talked to some expresa que tur's end. the office tax apparently was the 10 minute the landlord. the landlord went over to collect her rent and her grandson. i think it was 9 years old was in the front seat of the car and dikes refused to pay the rent and explain that to by

shooting. yeah. and hitting her in the neck and apparently shot the grandson right in the chest, killing them. and that's why i went on trial for murder. what the da's office is still in is that in those cases going back the facts of the case, police reports the transcripts and apparently there were some notes from the da that prosecuted the case that there were 5 notes and a couple of them referred to a black juror and a jewish tour and said that they were going to be excused for after because he did not want them on those particular brown. what his thinking was, i'm not my question is what was the composure of that year yet? but with a composed how many blocks were on the jury, how

many caucasians, hispanic? we don't know any of that. and because there are some notes that don't look too good because of the language used it doesn't mean that in totality, he got rid of all blacks or all jewish people. they have to look into that. so to put these notes out right now doesn't make a lot of sense today. >> i this is obviously too complex for a really short discussion. but da price is the subject of a recall. how does this factor into? her thinking at all, in your view? >> i don't know if she's thinking at all about that, but i surmise that's exactly what used to it. this is getting in the effect she was. it's getting the headlines. it's saying look at look what i'm doing and try and to correct wrongs that happened. what 25 30 years ago. you

know, i think people elect were coming on this presidential election and we look at the economy and this look around the house grand doing are they prosecute today? the crimes that are happening or is this just magician's type distraction? look over there and what we're trying to correct evils that happened in the past. if there were enables good for, but that doesn't take the spotlight off. what is going on or what's not going on within that office today? i mean, when people look at her philosophies that a lot of people say, i look around house crime, you know how the property crimes. so that that's in my opinion exactly what she's doing. and she's trying to make hay out of this saying look at look at correct in all these labels that happened 20 years ago. and by the way, all the loss about what gary, questioning. jurors

have changed. so the law has changed thatpand prosecutors if they were inclined to do that, can do that anymore. so the loss change. so now they look back what they wanted let this guy go free, reduce it to him now life without possibility of parole. i don't know. i don't know what other evidence she has. but if there's something that shows that this happened and it was pervasive, ok, go for but pay attention to today, too. but talking about the evils of the past. i mean, these notes do not look good regardless of of what they currently lead to. >> so what would be the rectifying a way to to solve this issue? we would presume 30 years ago the prosecuting attorneys that were in that office may not even be around today. and if they are, they're certainly much, much and is it just getting this guy off on a lighter sentence or releasing him from prison because of a tainted jury pool.

>> well, like i said, don't they have to look at new more? what's the composition of the jury? and i were there black said jewish people on exactly compose this jury because you can't water to blacks and you write some notes that are nasty. doesn't mean that there weren't other black people on the jury. i don't know. they haven't let that cat out of the back end, but the remedy will be. as you know, we don't put people to death in california. the more so that's not on the table. so remember, scott peterson, one of the court the supreme court reduced peterson apply for possibility of parole as so that might happen here. one would hope it doesn't lead to, you know, retrying the case because where you're going to find the witnesses. after all that time. so will the your

stay at the crime? that's up to the court. the federal judge that has this case and up to the district attorneys office, what they do with it. but again, attention to day. what's going on out in the streets and it a crime in alameda county. yeah, we'll say. got to keep our eye on the ball there. what's happening currently for sure. >> thank you so much or legal analyst, former prosecutor michael cardoza. always interesting insight. thank state water officials are working to improve drinking water and protect communities from the harmful heavy metal known to cause lung cancer. but the improvement to filter the water could come out of your pocket. last week officials voted unanimously to pass a water limit on the heavy metal known as chromium 6. they say that the new standard could cause californians to see increases in their water bills of less than $20 a month. but some could see hikes up to $40 a

month. that report zone forecast as we get a live look outside very a quiet. bay bridge toll plaza. yeah, it's barely barking out there, lawrence. pretty quiet. beautiful night. yeah, nice out there. we're seeing some changes in the weather around the bay area say temps should be in the cool. >> just a little bit. i think more drastic as we head in toward tomorrow in the middle of the week watch as temperatures really tumble. but out the door. now we are seeing a couple patches of fog form along the coastline that again, 2 role inside the bay. some of that started to move in as we head toward the sunset this evening. see more of that on the way overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. still these temperatures drop it off. yes, some places much as 5 degrees cooler today compared to yesterday, even 9 degrees cooler and napa. 9 degrees cooler santa rosa. we're going to see maybe 10 to 15 degrees and more cooling as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. temperatures today still warm in spots, especially in the new felt the cooling near the coastline. 62 degrees in san francisco. that temperatures, of course, much cooler. 69 in oakland, still

>> a ban on tiktok could be coming soon. over the weekend, the house passed legislation that could ban the platform. doesn't sell its stake to us owner within a year, the company is expected to go to court to try and block the law, arguing it would deprive the apps millions of users of the first amendment rights last month. president joe biden endorsed legislation that would ban tiktok saying, quote, if they pass it all, sign it. you won't be able to pay to skip the tsa lines at california. airports of a new bill passes. >> right now clear customers can pay a little less than $109 a year to avoid the tsa's regular and precheck lines. the new bill would ban that practice. enforce clear to either get its own dedicated line or stop operating unions for tsa agents and flight attendants support the bill saying clears an insecure pay

reservoir in stanislaus county on saturday. officials say if you're grow tired and was struggling to stay above the water surface, authorities are reminding everyone that if you plan to be outside in the water, good ideas to use a life vest. >> i'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle. take a break in to test. >> governor newsom's office funding at that ad showing 2 women from alabama getting pulled over as they try to leave the state to get an abortion. this comes as newsom is set to introduce a bill this week to assist women traveling from states with abortion bans. newsom is calling abortion the moral issue of our time. marine experts are trying to figure out what caused the death of a gray whale found offshore. >> off of alameda, the whale's carcass was first spotted saturday evening. it has since been moved to angel island. the plan now is for biologist who hopefully figure out what happened to it. >> we will open the whale up.

we will look inside. it will look for signs of cause of death. and it's very sad, i want to know what happened. i'd like to know what happened to whale. >> officials with the marine mammal center tell us it's not the same that was seen entangled in fishing gear 2 weeks ago. but sadly, we have seen other great whales end up dead in the bay. in fact, the young whale was found floating in the very same spot in alameda just a few years ago. it was hauled away. and a viewer, aaron jones sea valor to be on his boat to try and find it. sail from emeryville and headed toward angel island and then there it is. we spotted or at least the rotting carcass. this point covered in seabirds and then just floating there in the bay. jones was pretty upset at the site, as you can imagine. i don't know what these what's killing them or what could be done to help prevent them. >> but i think that it's a conversation we should be asking questions we should be asking.

>> i did ask that question of a biologist with the marine mammal center at the time who says it. that's why they perform these sees to get to the bottom of likely either a ship strike or getting caught up and in fishing line or perhaps just a whale that's sick. >> we're all very concerned about what's going on with these beautiful animals. and now to our 4 zone forecast with a live look at sfo. >> how long we going maintain this beautiful spring weather. it has been so nice has. and i mean, what a nice weekend we've had today. not a bad day either, although we started to see some cooling tomorrow, more drastic as far as cooling is concerned. then we start talking about some rain will show you that here coming up in 10, 10 just a minute. but out there tonight, some of that patchy fog is moved in along the coastline. more that on the way overnight tonight tomorrow morning. i think a lot of cloud cover to start out your day early on and slowly giving way to some sunshine as we head toward the middle of the day. so low clouds on the way even picking up, we may see some drizzle

along the coastline tomorrow morning waking up some fog early on giving way the sunshine. and then the cooling trend kicking starting today. but continuing tomorrow and into the midweek and then a slight chance of showers. i think as we get into late thursday and friday, temperatures out the door right now. you've got a cool 53 of the civic. a 56 in oakland. 54 degrees and snowmen. 54 also in that at this hour. but overall, not too cold out there right now. you see a little swirl along the coastline, a little area of low pressure up into a kind of intensify that marine layer and move it further on shore in deep in a somewhat as we head toward tomorrow. you can see more of that to the same on wednesday and then we get ready for late thursday into friday. there's a weak cold front that drops in here. you can see kind of a ragtag system dropping on biden. bring with it. a slight chance of some showers as we get into the latter part of the week. tomorrow, we're going also temperatures dropping off the plan. a 15 60's in the san francisco, especially cool off toward the sunset civic about 58 degrees inside the bay. those temperatures going to knock down quite a bit, too. you're starting out some fog early on pretty healthy sea breeze by the afternoon in the
