>> now at 2, we continue to follow the story of a dead whale washed ashore alameda beach experts trying to figure out how it died. also, a churchgoer was stabbed outside a church service in san francisco. what police know so far and passover celebrations are underway. we'll take a look at security concerns at some synagogues.

>> station. 2. >> everybody, thank you for joining kron. 4 news at 2. i'm catherine heenan with the ongoing war between israel and hamas. this year's passover celebrations. >> are believed to be generally more subdued. the annual jewish festival of freedom has been marred by the backdrop of deaths, including tens of thousands of palestinians here in the bay area. kron four's philippe djegal reports that the holiday is also leading to security concerns at synagogues. >> our celebrations for passover this year are definitely muted. nevertheless, rabbi mark blum says the jewish community is commanded by tradition to celebrate the 7 to 8 days of passover. adding that despite the current violent state of affairs in the middle holocaust survivors at his place of worship in oakland. >> temple beth abraham tell

as well. >> we have upgraded locks gates cameras and we anticipate doing much more as the money for the grant comes. and rabbi bloom says he keeps in regular touch with law enforcement and does not anticipate any violence. >> but says he will remain vigilant in oakland, philippe djegal kron. 4 news. >> in the east bay, a street takeover by people on motorcycles and oakland descended with one motorcyclist being injured. happened yesterday on bellevue and grand avenues. oakland police say dirtbike drivers beating through that area creating of times a real safety hazard. the motorcyclist was taken to a hospital after colliding with a car. meantime, like merit more motorcyclist, we're creating chaos. some of them riding on sidewalks. police say even driving in the opposite direction of traffic. police are investigating an apparent murder suicide after a woman and a man were found shot in hayward. police found

them in a car parked on winton avenue saturday night. they say a 31 year-old woman was in the passenger seat. a 36 yeaold man in the driver's seat. both had been shot. the man died a short time later in the hospital. witnesses told ce ey had heard the 2 arguing before hearing gunshots. police believe the man shot the woman before shooting himself. their identities have not been publicly released. shooting alongside oakland's hegenberger quarter center person to the hospital yesterday. police were called to an area near raising canes and now closed in and out location. this is video from the citizen app. police did not initially find anything, but then they got a call from the hospital, notifying them that a person who had been shot, what's being admitted it. the victim is expected to survive. a gray whale has been found dead just off the shore of alameda and san francisco bay. not clear yet how it died, although we know that

this is a popular time of year for whales to swim up the coast. kron 4 s charles clifford joins us live from treasure island and he has the latest. charles? >> well, good afternoon. that whale was found that did well was found past today. that will was towed across san francisco bay. kind of an unusual sight. so that didn't get that carcass didn't get stuck on the beach there in alameda and they moved to another location so biologists can do some tests try to figure out how the whale died. >> morning the remains of a 40 foot long adult female. great. well, we're slowly towed across san francisco bay from crown beach in alameda to angel island. the carcass was first spotted on saturday evening just offshore from alameda. at this point, it's unclear what might have killed the whale, whether it was a ship strike disease or some other cause is yet to be determined. the plan is for biologist from the marine mammal center and the california academy of sciences

to perform a necropsy on the whale to hopefully figure out what happened. we will open the whale up. >> we will look inside. it will look for signs of cause of death in the spring months. whales, including humpbacks in gray's migrate north along the california coast, moving from mexico to alaska to feed for the summer. sadly, it's not unusual for dead whales to wash ashore during the migration. how this whale got into san francisco bay is unknown. very beautiful creatures monday morning. laura sonido watched as the whale was towed away from alameda. she recently went on a whale watching cruise and it's sad to see this happen. and it's very sad, though. i want to know what happened. i'd like to know what happens as as of monday afternoon. it's not clear when the next crop see will be performed or what will eventually happen to the remains of the whale. >> after it's been examined. >> all right, back live now, a do not believe that this whale is the a great well that was spotted about 2 weeks ago with some fishing tied around its tail. that whale has

disappear. they're still trying to find him. but for now on treasure island, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> charles clifford, thank you very much. our time to talk about the weather as we take a live look at the san mateo bridge and kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan here with the details and it's been nice and the weekend was great. it was absolutely gorgeous. re really warm. and now we're getting some nice temperatures inland today to sunday sunshine as well. but notice there's a little breeze leaves kind of moving as we - take a live look here. >> at san francisco where to 57 degrees. that indication of the wind is bringing in a little marine layer today. it's going to change our pattern. but today still very warm out there. livermore concord right now at 82 degrees. big difference in half moon bay where they're still in the 50's. you see that southerly flow now starting to take shape. and that is kind of driving some of this cloud. your cooler weather towards u.s.. notice the wind now just and not a half moon bay, but also over in concord. also up in napa. so starting to see it in oakland as well and san jose

and this is the marine layer, the kind of see that cloud deck that is down in southern and central california. and that southerly flow starting to drive it right up the coast towards us. so if you've been out half moon bay, you kind of been in the clouds throughout the day today. and as we go through the evening, we're all going to see those clouds start to increase. by the way, full moon is tomorrow night. last night. i really noticed the moon because we had some nice clear skies out there. i don't know if we're going to see it as easily tonight with increasing clouds. but if you get a chance, take a look. gusty wind is going to be increasing temperature going pretty mild, though, between about 48 degrees in 53 degrees tonight. so that part is not bad. but this is what we're dealing with right now. as you can see at the golden gate bridge. we've been kind of socked in with a little bit of cloud cover. i'll be back in a little bit. we'll talk about the rather large temperature trend down that will be experience think this week. thank you. kyla san francisco's north beach neighborhood has been shaken by a stabbing. >> happened outside an iconic church. witnesses say the victim had been attending a service at saints. peter and paul catholic church when

attacked with a by a man with a knife kron 4. sarah stinson has that story. >> a scary sunday in san francisco's north beach. a person stabbed in front of the iconic saints. peter and paul catholic church during service. video from the citizen app shows emergency crews rushing to help the victim kron. 4 confirmed the man is a churchgoer. someone who works at saints. peter and paul says a homeless man was disrupting the sunday service. and when asked to leave, he got physical and the homeless man then pulled out a knife and a parishioner outside the church. i saw him. >> this guy being pinned down. and that's when we heard he got stabbed. so i meant top of steps of the church looking out and all of us and i go, oh, my the frightening scene played out on filbert street around one in the afternoon. the victim was later taken to the hospital that we're just

going just pray and see what happens. police say they arrested a man who witnesses identified as the attacker. >> the church worker says it scares them to know that the man was armed while inside the church. we didn't know we had a knife. he could have done something here. so this happened in supervisor. aaron peskin is district reached out to him. he says he's aware of the stabbing. >> and he's in contact with police. he also tells me the victim is recovering and expected to be okay. i'm sara stinson reporting in north beach. back to you. >> new video shows a person attacking a waymo driverless car. this was san francisco video shows somebody around market and allure saturday night kicking in the windshield standing on the car's hood and then eventually sitting on the a smashed windshield. a motive not clear. we've asked for comment from san francisco police and from waymo and have not yet heard back. it was the second time a waymo car was trashed in san francisco. you might

remember this in february, a 14 year-old was charged for setting this waymo car on fire. police say a crowd sprayed graffiti on the car, broke a window through fireworks inside. there were no passengers and no one was hurt. happening now, nurses at san francisco's kaiser permanente medical center are joining a statewide strike. they are protesting what they say is unregulated use of artificial intelligence in the hospital practices and nurses say they want to highlight patient safety amid a rush to use ai today's protest expected to include members of the california nurses association statewide. and coming up, a former bay area police officer has been killed in the line of duty. but we know by his staff. >> also, san jose's mayor unveils a new plan to fight the problem of homelessness by some already arguing it's not enough. one of former

felony counts for falsifying business records. >> that's donald trump's trial began in earnest today with opening statements and the first witness inside and outside the courtroom. donald trump and his lawyers claim that the former president is unfairly accused of illegally hiding hush money payments to adult film star stormy daniels. alina is one of trump's lawyers should not be here today because he did nothing trump defense told the 12 person jury that the payments like the $130,000 check given to daniels by trump's lawyer. we're not illegal. this is the case. >> uk and they that a legal expense. >> prosecutors say trump lied about the money in official new york business records. they say trump directed his then lawyer michael cohen to pay the national enquirer to buy exclusive rights to actors. daniel story of an alleged affair with trump and

in san jose right now. 82 in livermore, 55 in half moon bay, though. so very different story. if you're out at the coast where the clouds been hanging on the while, pittsburgh's 84 degrees, 83 in concord and fairfield. you see these numbers really jumping up. we're in the 70's those part in the north bay. you can see cloverdale kelsey bill, they are up in the 80's right now. low 80's. so obviously well above where we should be this time of year, not the case. if you're out at half moon bay where they've been sitting in clouds all day today and they are really getting the beginnings of the change that's going to be happening. whereas the spot like san jose is still basking in the sunshine. but even san jose will see a big difference between today and tomorrow. so right now we're in the upper 70's expected to be up to about 80 degrees. going to drop that by 10 degrees for your tuesday wednesday and go down even lower as we get into thursday and friday. so that obviously means that a different air masses coming in. and we've got these little kind of disturbances that are ushering this. it's really going to be bringing things up from the south a little bit today, as far as the marine layer is concerned. this is

your tuesday into wednesday. you can see a little drizzle possible along the coast, but we stay dry and we get into thursday night into friday. and that's why i think we could get the chance of a sprinkle, maybe a light shower that rolls and it doesn't look like it's going to be a whole lot of anything. and then the weekends actually looking pretty good, albeit not as warm as we were last weekend. so my message is get out and take the dog for the long walk today. this is petaluma, for example, going to be beautiful in those upper 70's today up to almost 80 degrees. it should be great because tomorrow will still be. alright. but you're going take the jacket and it's going little breezy as well. notice we just stay cool right through till we get to next week next weekend, sunday, monday, we do pulled up just a little bit, but jackets at the ready, everyone. >> thank you. kyla sounds good at in the south bay, san jose mayor matt mahan says >> he wants to focus on the problem of homelessness while also trying to tackle a huge budget deficit kron. 4 s jack molmud has that story. johnny mendez lets and her

girlfriends car. and warm day in san jose. mendez has been homeless for just a couple weeks. she says she works as a security guard pulling in about 1000 bucks a she's been homeless before. but this time. >> she says her hopes are shot. she says she's been rejected for voucher programs. so far we have to get really pragmatic or concern comes amid the city's struggle to fill a 50 million dollar deficit in this year's budget. mayor matt mahan told the community they're going to prioritize homeless resources. you have to experiment with things that we haven't done a lot of in recent years while at the same time focusing on reducing homeless encampments, we're going to have to experiment with safe sleeping sites may or may have says a cheaper option to get people out of an unsanctioned encampment is through illegal. what and example is when you drive down willow street by the 87 and see this encampment may have has proposed moving this one into a sanctioned encampment. there's just way too much red tape. the founder

of a cop, a silicon valley and homeless advocate. top clinton says unhoused people he works with are worried about the summer and what the council will end up approving. but yeah, they're worried about the safe parking the worry about. they don't want to go into congregate shelters or anything that resembles a congregate shelter like in says he hopes san jose will make the possible sanction encampments area and allow people to come and go as they please. not that does says she would go to a sanction parking lot. >> and he's just tired of being homeless. >> i stress. >> now all this comes as a recent audit finds that the city of san jose is not doing enough and is not being transparent. but the money that is given to them from the state of california to address its homelessness issues. now the city says this highlights a bigger statewide issue in terms of funding, but it will be up to the city and the counselors to decide how it

should fund homeless programs going into this next fiscal year and downtown san jose jacmel. but kron 4 news. >> the organizers behind the annual dog surfing championship in pacifica are asking for help from the public. they say this is just really expensive to put on a costs have gone up 100% in the last couple of years. the event is free to the public. only surfers and vendors have to pay for entry. organizers hoping to raise $10,000 by may. 1st, the event scheduled for the end of august. a few are interested in helping to support the world dog surfing championship. a lot of fun for people. we do have a link on our website. kron 4 dot com. still ahead, we're still paying higher prices for gas. we're going to take a look at the latest numbers in the bay area. >> also, how local cities are celebrating earth day how people came together to try to people came together to try to help the planet.

been talking about this communities across the bay, her celebrating every year, april 22nd. there's a focus on promoting ways to protect the environment. it includes things like cleaning beaches free rides from some transit agencies to help reduce car emissions. the focus this year at the threat from plastics here in the bay area. the san jose earthquakes partnered with coca-cola and a local nonprofit to plant trees and san jose's japantown volunteers planting 30 new trees in san francisco city guides holding a climate

change tour have crissy field in the aquarium of the bay. there's a celebration, including dinner. you get to have dinner inside one of the year underwater tunnels and there will be an earth waves performance in milpitas. mark writes, kicking off a week of free rides and we have a full list of events on our website. kron 4 dot com. for your money. the global demand for oil is going up as a result of the war in israel. aaa says the average price of gas in california now 5.44 a gallon. that's $0.20 higher than just last week looking at the bay area. the most expensive counties are napa and san francisco. the average about 5, 75, 60 in san mateo, sonoma marin and alameda counties, solano and contra costa counties. i just a couple cents last. the cheapest relatively speaking santa clara county at 5.54.

>> the u.s. supreme court is hearing a homeless case. and the question of whether cities can restrict people up for being homeless bay area cities watching this case very closely. kron four's will tran explains. why is this so important? because the united states supreme court. >> it is the law of the land. so whatever they decide and we don't know how long it's going to take whatever the site could impact cities like san francisco and sacramento. and i mentioned sacramento because governor gavin newsom obviously lives there and he is watching very closely hoping that united states supreme court rules in favor of the small town called grants pass, which is in the southern border of oregon. here's what's at stake. grants

pass would like to criminalize being homeless encampments slapping fines on them. what that means is they would like to clear it out impose fines, but homeless advocates say that is not fair and actually fought this in one a couple years ago. the 9th circuit court of appeals in san francisco said they could not do that because is cruel and unusual punishment that leads to a vicious cycle. you are in essence finding people who cannot afford it ruins their credit. and then when they're ready to get back on their feet, they can't rent. well, this case is made all the way to washington, d.c., that supreme court justices will decide what happens. san francisco cares deeply about what happens as well as the entire state, especially governor gavin newsom. he has struggled to get a handle on the homeless situation. but if they rule in favor grants pass, that means california and san francisco can start

imposing some of their local laws against the homeless. law enforcement agencies around the bay area and beyond are mourning the loss of a former colleague. >> deputy toben bolter. he was killed in the line of duty saturday night during a traffic stop in boise, idaho. he was the first sheriff's deputy in that county to be killed in the line of duty and he had worked in law enforcement 7 years, including as a member of the pleasant hill police department. he was also a cadet. but the walnut creek police department, he was 27 years old. fairfield police say they discovered a man with 1000 ecstasy pills in his possession. they got a call about a man slumped over the wheel of a car in a parking lot of coffee shop parking lot on north texas street police found the drugs they detained 30 year-old george bachelor. they say they also found other drugs, including meth and fentanyl.

in the east bay to people in fremont are without a home after a house fire on truman place. this happened sunday afternoon. firefighters say they were able to put it out quickly about 20 minutes. no one was hurt. no other buildings were damaged. >> happening now, golden gate ferry service between sausalito and san francisco has been suspended indefinitely. damage was discovered to the pier friday. that was during a routine inspection repairs began over the weekend could wrap up later this week. the pair will be reinspected before ferry service resumes. for now, there is bus service over the golden gate bridge. all right. time to talk about the forecast as we take a look at what is great park. pretty foggy. >> that is. that is catherine. it is golden gate park, but it is foggy because we've got that marine layer moving in now. it's not quite here at

the embarcadero. you can see we have a cruise ship saying hello to everyone. i think that the princess ship there today. i'm still pretty nice day in many spots. but you get close to the water and you start to see that marine layer. and we see that here at the golden gate bridge as well. an indication of what's coming our way, which is to say that we've been relatively warm. i'm looking at santa rosa as an example here. we've got 11 above average day so far this month, 9 below. so certainly the above average of one out yesterday was 81 degrees in santa rosa. but if we look at the overall picture, we know this week, we're going to cool down. and now look at the week after that, which would be april 29th through may 5th, you can see the eastern half of the country, the center of the country set to warm up words. we are going to be either average or slightly below average. so just give the indication that after today we're really going to see these temperatures. can already see that along the coast. santa barbara right now at 58 degrees. but you head inland to bakersfield, fresno, you know, they're in the mid to upper 80's right now or it's very, very warm. same story really as you start to look at the bay area out of the coast, we're cool. the

50's 61 in san francisco, but head on over to conquer to antioch and we are in the low 80's. so cooler air mass coming in little bit of moisture at the marine layer. the upside of this. i know a lot of people are happy to say goodbye to the warm temperatures but we get some marine layer and it does help to kind of keep those allergies down a little bit as we get into after today's as we get into tuesday and wednesday, that should get a f you who are sneezing. iman, back to you. san francisco's infamous public toilet got a themed celebration and no a valley. >> the restroom made headlines after an initial million dollar price tag. a little. the replacement was last kron four's. dan thorn was there for what was dubbed the toilet bowl. >> no, we've alleys town square taken over by a party. the event dubbed the toilet bowl and bracing the controversy around san francisco's now infamous public restroom. this kind of got world.

>> famous like bathroom. people like laughing at us. so let's just laugh at ourselves and have some celebration featuring a toiletry. music from the american standard band and bathroom inspired acrobatics. it's so much fun get to celebrate this new bathroom. i think public restrooms are really important. i think we should have more of them. the public restroom opened up last month after controversy over its initial 1.7 million dollar price tag. but after contributions from multiple companies, the project ended up being around $300,000. some toilet bowl attendees say they're flushed with excitement over the new bathroom. i think it's so wonderful to have a place for people to be able to relieve themselves when necessary. we all need to go. >> and it's nice to have a place to it's just kind ridiculous and ludicrous and hilarious and fabulous all the same time. and of course,

there was a line of people waiting to try it out. >> a few giving rave reviews >> 10 out of 10 with me. and that was kron four's. dan thorn reporting on the peninsula. a man was robbed and attacked in north fair oaks happened sunday morning at the intersection of 8th avenue in middlefield road. the san mateo county sheriff's office says the victim was getting out of his car and somebody came up and punched him, stole some of his belongings before taking off. deputies say the thief was last seen running on 8th avenue. the victim taken to a hospital is expected to survive. no arrests have been made. chick-fil-a continuing its bay area expansion planning on opening a new location in san mateo later this year. it will be at the bridge point shopping center. probably this fall. i open last thursday. the company opened a second pleasanton

location and it's building a new location in concord. the cupertino city council has approved millions in cuts to city services as officials are working to trying to balance a multimillion dollar deficit. city officials cut roughly 9 million dollars. the cuts include reducing public works contracts, cutting vacant the deficit comes from a loss and apple sales tax. that was after an audit last year. mayor london breed back in san francisco after her big trip to china. she posted this video on social media saying we had a remarkable time. our partnership stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation driving innovation, understanding across continents, the mayor spent almost a week there trying to improve relations and attract business. her visit included a trip on china's high-speed train and she is announcing news here holding stuffed

panda announcing what will be the return of giant pandas apparently to the san francisco zoo. sunday was the final day of the cherry blossom festival in san francisco. and a highlight the grand parade there were drummers and dancers and floats are going down polk and post streets. some people lining the got nice weather for >> the festival is known for highlighting japanese culture, including food and art. this was the last festival before the peace plaza. his run of 8. bart officially retiring its legacy trains. the transit agency hosted ceremony and oakland's macarthur station over the weekend sending off the trains for a last run.

people got to ride a legacy trained for macarthur to fremont station airing the original service part provided in 1972. the ride was about 45 minutes long. a long 24 miles of the original section of tracks. now 3 legacy cars are headed to the western railway museum and sassoon city making way for a new generation. nearly 700 new fleet of the future. cars are now officially certified for service. >> in our nation's capitol, the house has passed legislation that could ban tiktok in the u.s. that's only of tiktok's china-based owner does not so a stake in the company within a year. the decision by house republicans to include tiktok as part of a larger foreign aid package meant the bam. was fast track? the proposal the company is expected to go to court and tried to block the law,

february. but the players are back here on the premises for voluntary workouts. and of course, forty-niners brass is prepping for the nfl draft. coming up on thursday. the team has 10 picks in this year's draft including a first round pick for the first time since 2021. will have the 31st overall pick. and today general manager john lynch explained his approach for how they're bolstering the team's roster through the draft this season. while the the glaring, you know, spot that a guy can come in and be the starter right away, may not be there. there's number spots that we see probably more than people might think where there is opportunity. and we've. >> you know, we were very thoughtful of that. but then also have to be flexible and nimble to see how the draft breaks and then whose who do you have not being beholden like we are drafting this position at? 31 now will draft. okay. we've got 3 or 4 needs that we see, you know, which which where we're going to go with it and that that when we've done our best work. and i think when most teams as team executives and players
