outside a church service san francisco. what police know so far about that incident? and we continue to follow the story of a dead washed ashore on alameda experts trying to figure out how it died. we'll have a live report. >> from the bay station. you're watching kron. and news. >> hello, everybody. thank you for joining us on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm catherine heenan. a gray whale has been found dead just off the shore of alameda and san francisco bay. not clear yet how it died, although we do know it is a popular time of year for whales to swim up the coast. kron 4 s charles clifford joins us live from treasure island. and charles, what do we know? >> well, right now as we speak, kind of an unusual sight on san francisco bay. there's a tow boat pulling a the carcass of this great well across the bay. that's the san

francisco. there is kind of right between and the transamerica pyramid over there and probably hard to see. but they wanted to move it from alameda. so did wash ashore and get stuck on the sand and they're taking it to another location so they can examine and hopefully figure out why this whale died. >> monday morning, the remains of a 40 foot long adult female gray whale. we're slowly towed across san francisco bay from crown beach in alameda to angel island. the carcass was first spotted on saturday evening just offshore from alameda. at this point, it's unclear what might have killed the whale, whether it was a ship strike disease or some other cause is yet to be determined. the plan is for biologist from the marine mammal center and the california academy of sciences to perform a necropsy on the whale to hopefully figure out what happened. we will open the whale up. >> we will look inside. it will look for signs of cause of death in the spring months. whales, including humpbacks in gray's migrate north along the california coast, moving from mexico to alaska to feed for the summer. sadly, it's not

unusual for dead whales to wash ashore during the migration. how this whale got into san francisco bay is unknown. very beautiful creatures monday morning. laura sonido watched as the whale was towed away from alameda. she recently went on a whale watching cruise and it's sad to see this happen. and it's very sad, though. i want to know what happened. i'd like to know what happened to whale as of monday afternoon. it's not clear when the next crop see will be performed or what will eventually happen to the remains of the whale after it's been examined. >> all right, back live now. we also know that this whale is not the same whale that was spotted about 2 weeks ago offshore with some fishing nets stuck to its tail. this is a different way. >> but for now on treasure island, charles clifford kron, 4 news charles, we were just talking about that while they never they haven't found it right. the other while. >> know that particular well, they were trying to put a buoy on or tracking device, but it has disappear the men looking for and they can't find it

most likely it has moved on further north. >> all right. thank you. a lot of oil news. all right, charles clifford, thanks very much. police are investigating an apparent murder suicide after a woman and a man were found shot in hayward. police found them in a car parked on winton avenue saturday night. they say a 3-old woman was in the passenger seat. a 36 year-old man in the driver's seat and both had been shot. the man died a shor lat in the hospital. witnesses told police they had heard arguing before hearing gunshots. police believe the man shot the woman before shooting himself. their identities have not been publicly released. san francisco's north beach neighborhood has been shaken by a stabbing outside and iconic church. witeesses say the victim was attending a service at saints. peter and paul catholic church when attacked by a man with a knife kron 4. sarah stinson has that story.

>> a scary sunday in san francisco's north beach. a person stabbed in front of the iconic saints. peter and paul catholic church during service. video from the citizen app shows emergency crews rushing to help the victim kron. 4 confirmed the man is a churchgoer. someone who works at saints. peter and paul says a homeless man was disrupting the sunday service. and when asked to leave, he got physical and the homeless man then pulled out a knife and a parishioner outside the church. i saw him. >> home on the sky being pinned down. and that's when we heard he got stabbed. so i meant top of steps of the looking out and all of us and i go, oh, my the frightening scene played out on filbert street around one in the afternoon. the victim was later taken to the hospital that we're just going just pray and see what happens. police say they arrested a man who witnesses identified as

the attacker. >> the church worker says it scares them to know that the man was armed while inside the church. we didn't know we had a knife. he could have done something here. so this happened in supervisor. aaron peskin is district reached out to me, says he's aware of the stabbing. >> and he's in contact with police. he also tells me the victim is recovering and expected to be okay. i'm sara stinson reporting in north beach. back to you. >> a new video shows a person attacking a waymo, the driverless car. this is san francisco video shows somebody about around market and alluret street saturday night kicking in the windshield standing on the car's hood, then not sitting on the smashed windshield. motive. not clear. we have asked for comment from the san francisco police and waymo have not heard back yet. second time a waymo car was trashed in san francisco. you might remember the same. >> february a 14 year-old charged for setting that waymo

car on fire. police crowd sprayed graffiti on the car, broke a window. throw fireworks inside. starting that fire. there were no passengers and no one was hurt. the u.s. supreme court is hearing a homeless case. and the question of whether cities can punish people in effect for being homeless bay area cities. not surprisingly watching this closely. kron four's will tran reports. why is this so important? because the united states supreme court. >> it is the law of the land. so whatever they decide and we don't know how long it's going to take whatever the site could impact cities like san francisco and sacramento. and i mentioned sacramento because governor gavin newsom obviously lives there and he is watching very closely hoping that united states supreme court rules in favor of the small town called grants pass, which is in the southern border of oregon.

here's what's at stake. grants pass would like to criminalize being homeless encampments, slapping fines on what that means is they would like to clear it out impose fines, but homeless advocates say that is not fair and actually fought this in one a couple years ago. the 9th circuit court of appeals in san francisco said they could not do that because is cruel and unusual punishment that leads to a vicious cycle. you are in essence finding people who cannot afford it ruins their credit. and then when they're ready to get back on their feet, they can't rent. well, this case is made all the way to washington, d.c., that supreme court justices will decide what happens. san francisco cares deeply about what happens as well as the entire state, especially governor gavin newsom. he has struggled to get a handle on the homeless situation. but if

they rule in favor grants pass, that means california and san francisco can start imposing some of their local laws against the homeless. >> all right. time for a look at the forecast over looking live over san francisco and meteorologist kyla grogan is here. kind of we've been cooling over what a beautiful weekend. yes, we want more just i know gorges that we get one more day of it covered one more that we've got a pattern change happening. you can see a little bit of a breeze kicking up here in san francisco. >> as we take a live look here at the transamerica pyramid temperatures are pretty lovely out there and pretty warm above average. check it out. concord has already hit the 80 degree mark. >> at this hour. so, you know, we're going higher than that. a big difference, though, if you look at half moon bay ridge, just 55 degrees right now because we do have the marine layer still hanging out there. and that is making all of the different. so again, i mentioned a little breezy now that breeze is going to pick up as we get into the afternoon. it will be a southerly flow. and you already see that in half moon bay where they're getting some

of that cloud cover that's been hanging on. and as we look here, you can see from central to southern california that marine layer very defined and it's going to be rolling right up towards us. and we're starting to see that now around the golden gate bridge as well. this hour. there's little bit of cloud cover there, too. want to take liver words example, or take a look at the mount tam cam here. you see that marine layer is very present in the bay. but livermore being inland, we'll warm up and be about 81 degrees today and beautiful sunshine. so it's going to be a real different forecast depending on where you are in the bay today. we're starting to see that microclimate thing that we get where the coast will only be in the low 60's. we'll see some 70's around the bay and then we could get up to those low 80's as we head inland. so one more day of this, and then we do have a pretty pronounced cooldown on the way you can see that temperature drop. i'll be back a little bit. we'll talk more about that. thank you. kyla. >> happening now, nurses at san francisco's kaiser permanente medical center are joining a statewide strike. they're protesting what they

say is unregulated use of artificial intelligence and hospital practices. nurses say they want to highlight patient safety concerns amid a rush to use ai today's protest expected to include members of the california nurses association statewide. the organizers behind the annual dog surfing championships in pacific other asking for some help from the public to keep it going. they say the cost i'm doing this is just too high and they've gone up by 100% in just the last couple of years. the event is free for the public. only the surfers and vendors have to pay for entry. organizers are hoping to raise $10,000 by may. 1st, the event is scheduled for the end of august and a few are interested in helping to support the world dog surfing championship. we do have a link on our website. kron 4 dot com. it is earth day and

communities across the bay area are celebrating every year. april 22nd. there's a big focus on promoting ways to protect the environment, which can include things like cleaning beaches, a free rides from some transit agencies to help reduce car emissions. the focus this year of the threat from plastics here in the bay area. the san jose earthquakes partnered with coca-cola and a local nonprofit to plant trees. this was san jose's japantown on tears planting 30 new trees in san francisco. a city guide says holding a climate change tour at crissy field in the aquarium of the bay. there's a celebration. it includes dinner dinner inside a underwater tunnels. and there will also be an earth waves performance in milpitas. mark writes, meantime, is kicking off a week of free rights and we've got a full list of events on our website. kron 4 dot com. coming up, a

>> san jose mayor matt mahan want to focus problems of the homeless. he says while also trying to tackle a 50 million dollar budget deficit. kron 4 is jack molmud has that story. johnny mendez lives and her girlfriends and warm day in san jose. mendez has been homeless for just a couple weeks. she says she works as a security guard pulling in

about 1000 bucks a she's been homeless before. but this time. >> she says her hopes are shot. she says she's been rejected for voucher programs. so far we have to get really pragmatic or concern comes amid the city's struggle to fill a 50 million dollar deficit in this year's budget. mayor matt mahan told the community they're going to prioritize homeless resources. you have to experiment with things that we haven't done a lot of in recent years while at the same time focusing on reducing homeless encampments, we're going to have to experiment with safe sleeping sites may or may have says a cheaper option to get people out of an unsanctioned encampment is through illegal. what an example is when you drive down willow street by the 87 and see this encampment may have has proposed moving this one into a sanctioned encampment. there's just way too much red tape. the founder of a cop, a silicon valley and homeless advocate top lancton says unhoused people he works with are worried about the summer and what the council will end up approving. but yeah, they're worried about the safe parking the worry

about. they don't want to go into congregate shelters or anything that resembles a congregate shelter like says he hopes san jose will make the possible sanction encampments area and allow people to come and go as they please not around specially for you that does says she would go to a sanction parking lot. >> and he's just tired of being homeless. >> i stress. >> now all this comes as a recent audit finds that the city of san jose is not doing enough and is not being transparent. but the money that is given to them from the state of california to address its homelessness issues. now the city says this highlights a bigger statewide issue in terms of funding, but it will be up to the city and the counselors to decide how it should fund homeless programs going into this next fiscal year in downtown san jose jacmel. kron 4 news. >> all right. time for another look at the forecast looking

live at sfo calo. why travel when you can hang around here and enjoy the kind of weather we've been getting. i know it's been gorgeous and it is earth day today, everybody and the earth definitely. >> helping us out. as you can see, temperatures today are going to be quite lovely, although cooler out at the coast, but inland, we're going to see upper 70's, even low 80's out there. and in fact, we're already looking at 77 degrees right now in san jose, 80 in dublin. you can see these numbers have gone up but happy bay, just 54 degrees for the marine layer is hanging on very different. then when you head up spots like hockey right now, santa rosa about 76 degrees. so we're definitely going to be above average yet again in the places that are inland. but you can see we're running a little bit cooler out at half moon bay, because, again, they have that president of the marine layer. so here we are. you can see those clouds that are out there. it's a very big difference between this and this right, san jose where we're going to be looking out for some nice, warm temperatures today. lots of sunshine. look at 79, 80 degrees already in san jose. and by tomorrow, we're going to drop that down about 10

degrees. you can see we continue as we go throughout the week to see that cooling trend roll through and that has everything to do with the marine layer and some of these little kind of impulse is it could be coming through here, bringing clouds and so as we take you through tuesday and wednesday, you can start to see those clouds moving in and even a little bit of coastal drizzle as we get later into the week, we even have a little shot at a sprinkle, maybe a light shower as we get into thursday night and friday as we have that pattern change. but the bigger picture is that it just really cools us down. and we do rebound a little bit as we get towards next weekend. but all of that being said, my advice today is to get outside and enjoy the weather because we are going to see a pretty big change between today and tomorrow taking petaluma as an example here. we're looking to get into those upper 70's low 80's, as you over the next few hours. and then as we get into the evening, a pretty nice evening. so take the dog on the long dog. walk more today because tomorrow you might want that jacket as you head out. you can see tomorrow inland temperatures will top out about 70 71 degrees and

then we'll head into the 60's wednesday thursday and friday. there's that slight chance of a shower on friday. i don't think we'll see a lot out of this but certainly will help to reinforce the cooler temperatures. we will start to rebound and it looks like it's a pretty nice weather for nexo weekend. it won't be the above average temperatures. we had this past weekend. it will be more slightly at or below average, but still looks like we'll dry out. look pretty good for next weekend. so that's that's a good thing, catherine, if we can keep the extra warmth. yeah. and the dog walking forecast. a good thing. i think that should be a regular feature. thanks, kyle. >> san francisco's the infamous public toilet got a themed celebration and no a valley. the restroom making headlines after its initial million dollar price tag, the replacement was significantly less kron four's. dan thorn was there for what was dubbed the toilet bowl. >> no, we've alleys town square taken over by a party. the event dubbed the toilet bowl and bracing the controversy around san

francisco's now infamous public restroom. this kind of got world. >> famous like bathroom. people like laughing at us. so let's just laugh at ourselves and have some celebration featuring a toiletry. use it from the american standard band and bathroom inspired acrobatics. it's so much fun get to celebrate this new bathroom. >> i think public restrooms are really important. i think we should have more of them. the public restroom opened up last month after controversy over its initial 1.7 million dollar price tag. but after contributions from multiple companies, the project ended up being around $300,000. some toilet bowl attendees say they're flushed with excitement over the new bathroom. i think it's so wonderful to have a place for people to be able to relieve themselves when necessary. we all need to go and it's nice to have a place to it's just kind ridiculous and ludicrous

afternoon. federal food inspectors are issuing a public health alert. >> for ground briefed, prada ground beef products from the greater omaha packing company, the beef products might have a specific strain of e-coli which can cause intestinal infections. the beef was produced in march. it's got a freeze by date of april 22nd. it was shipped to restaurants and stores all over the country that have been no confirmed. reports of illness. a medical breakthrough might make it possible to diagnose parkinson's disease. earlier right now, the main form of diagnosis as clinical just looking at a person's symptoms, patients often have to wait months or years before an official diagnosis. but a new skin test called sin one is changing that it is designed to identify an

developing world news, the war on gaza continues. israel insisting it will still invade the city of rafah. >> news nation's robert sherman has the details. the idf military intelligence chief announcing that he will be stepping down from his post. >> after what happened on october, 7th. this is the first major official in israel that we've really seen stepping down in the wake of the october 7th attack is there's been a lot of pressure on the ground here in israel for some kind of accountability for allowing that october 7th attack to happen. all of this coming as the israelis are planning to conduct a major operation in rafah to topple hamas is last few remaining battalions. israel's top generals meeting to discuss continuing the war on the southern front. it's important to note that passover begins tonight here

in israel. it's estimated over 133 hostages are still being held in gaza. many families will be celebrating with empty seat at the dinner table. demonstrations have been taking place here in tel aviv this weekend demanding their release as such prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying they intend to crank up the pressure on hamas. we will shrink it with additional painful blows and this will happen soon. >> in the coming days, we will increase the military and diplomatic pressure on hamas because this is the only way to free our hostages and achieve our victory. >> humanitarian situation in gaza, particularly rapa something the u.s. has raised concerns about. they've had discussions with israel in recent days about how to mitigate some of those concerns. estimated over half of gaza's population is currently sheltering inside of the enclave. egyptian officials reportedly saying that while they've tried to talk israel out of a major offensive in rafah, they are preparing for the likelihood of one in the imminent future

in tel aviv, robert sherman, news nation. millions of people around the world are preparing to celebrate the start of passover. it is a seven-day holiday marking the liberation of israelites. >> from slavery in egypt, the face of the unleavened bread referred to as much pass over begins at sundown, family and friends gather for the traditional seder meal. governor newsom taking aim at republicans by focusing on the fact republican policies make it difficult for states with abortion bans to travel to other states to get an abortion. the governor wants to introduce a bill this week to help women traveling from alabama who want abortions. this comes as his administration rolled out. this adds a fictional video ad showing 2 women driving being pulled over by an officer who demands the driver. take a pregnancy test before

arresting her newsome, calling abortion the moral issue of our time. lawmakers in nevada could tap and a nearly 400 million dollars of taxpayer money to build the a's. new state, a stadium in las vegas. but that proposal has led to a lawsuit. kron four's. dan kerman has the latest. >> it was in june of last year when the nevada legislature passed sb one bill earmarking 380 million dollars in public money to help pay for the a's. new baseball stadium in las vegas in february of this year. the nevada teachers union filed a lawsuit against the governor, the treasurer and the state of nevada suggesting the way sb one was written violates nevada's constitution. >> issue we're having is that the vote tally was not two-thirds majority for revenue peace that this funding mechanism that they structured under this bill assumes deaths from the county without that's that revenue peace involved, that the law

itself, you know, doesn't mention certain populations and the county and the language very sloppy written when it comes to stop iran, rather when it comes to assuming that deaths since the initial filing, the legislature and the las vegas stadium authority have also been named in the suit. >> and while a's owner john fisher, he's the one to benefit from the public funds and sb one. the a's are not named in the suit. but this week the a's filed a motion with the court to intervene in the case saying the athletics and affiliates have a substantial interest in sb one and will be affected if sb one is found unconstitutional without intervention, the athletics ability to protect its interests will be impaired. strong public schools will be opposing their intervention. >> we think there are interests are well represented by the other defendants, many of whom were basically unregistered lobbyist for them during session. so those folks want this stadium just as much as they do a separate filing by as president dave kaval confirms financing and a

development agreement for the new stadium had not been finalized. but the process is underway. >> it's unclear when the court will rule on the a's participation in this lawsuit. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> law enforcement agencies around the bay area are mourning the death of a former colleague deputy tobin bolter. he was killed in the line of duty saturday night during a traffic stop in boise, idaho. he was the first sheriff's deputy in the county there to be killed in the line of duty. poulter had worked in law enforcement 7 years, including as a member of the pleasant hill police department. he was also a cadet with the walnut creek police department. he was 27 years old. state lawmakers are trying to help pet owners who have a hard time when they need a new place to live by creating legislation that would ban no pet policies. this bill would allow property owners to ask questions about pets only

after an application has been approved. landlords would not be allowed to charge extra fees for pets. property owners would still be able to refuse applicants with pets if they have safety concerns or health problems are involved. the bill cleared a state assembly committee at needs. of course, the approval of the full assembly and the senate. insurance companies are leaving california, making it harder for people to ensure their homes, tokio marine american and trans pacific insurance are the latest to pull homeowner coverage in california because of the high cost. this is affecting roughly 12,000 policyholders 7 of the 12 biggest insurance companies have either suspended or restrictive policies within the last year. all state paused home insurance business in 2022. because of up costs and the wildfires. tesla is cutting off its cars, which have full

self-driving capability. those are the cars were somebody is required to be there to drive. the prices are being cut from 12,000 to $8,000. that's after tesla announced last week it lower prices on 3 different models by $2000. the price reductions aimed at keeping tesla in the game. its stock has dropped about 40% this year. there is a new call to arms for earth day 2020 for cutting plastic use by 60% by 2040, half of all plastic produced is designed for single use purposes. that's according to a group called beyond plastics. there are now global campaigns to phase out single-use plastics, which pollute the ocean and take up space landfills. >> your key tip is to try to avoid plastic for every 10 trip to any american

supermarket. it's a little bit of a plastics disaster, but there are steps we can take as individuals to reduce plastic. it takes a little bit thought and it's hard and don't be yourself. >> experts say the key is making small changes like using reusable shopping bags, avoiding plastic packaging. one that's possible. all right. time to talk about the beautiful weather. again, we're looking live at the embarcadero. kind of looks a little breezy looking those palm trees. it is. we're going to a bit of a southerly flow that's going to take and particularly this afternoon into tomorrow afternoon. and you definitely see a little bit of that here is we've got believes that a wrestling. >> but boy, oh, boy, just a gorgeous day in san francisco with more sunshine. having said that, go to the golden gate bridge doesn't look so gorgeous, right? because we've got the marine layer here that is very present in keeping the coast kind of cool. having said that, there are spots that are going to be looking pretty nice today. santa rosa is one of them. and i thought we'd look at where we've gone

so far this month because as you're about to roll into cooler temperatures, i wanted to point out that we've been above average more than we've been below average this month. and today we're going to add to that. you can see yesterday in santa rosa got up to 81 degrees. we look past this week, which we know is going to cool down and we go into the following week, kind of the end of april beginning of may. you can see the eastern half of the country warming up the west coast expected to be either at or slightly below normal. so obviously we're about to say goodbye to these very, very warm temperatures that have been with us for a little while. having said that, we are still very warm today. so you can see bakersfield right now at 83 degrees. 81 in fresno, 82 in reading a lot cooler along the coast, particularly southern california. there you can see and central california. they've got that marine layer presents. so here we are cool out of half moon bay, but we're already in the 80's in concord, an antioch, and we're close to in some other spots to in our inland areas. i'm so very interesting forecast between today and tomorrow. now we are going to be cooling down a little bit. i do want

the oakland zoo's conservation manager adrian merced need joins us live. and she's got some advice to die sale. your last name correctly. let's start with that. adrian. >> yes, that's correct. they thank you. and i i know that you guys really care about why do you care enough to jump in play a significant role? so first is something that is very special to us. we are all part of this planet. >> a lot of the conservation work that we do here at the zoo. it's involves humans, animals and the environment. earth is really a wonderful day for us to get to celebrate all of that and celebrate a lot of initiatives we do here at the zoo and helping site or public when they come visit. so this earth day, we are celebrating our compost for the climate initiative, which is the simple acts that anybody can take and mrking sure that they're gaining waste is going into the compost. remember than the

landfill. this is 20% of california's methane is created by organic waste, ending up in a landfill. so the simple at is a huge solution to reduce our global greenhouse gases and help prevents the impact of climate change. as you can see in the videos here, we have some really amazing signage throughout the zoo to help guide you in your hair and all of that animal waste which are seeing in the wheelbarrow there is actually com posted here on site. so we're able to divert a ton. actually 814 times waist and turned into compost and then use in our landfills here or that we've started that will keep out the landfill and then use and our landscaping here. so our beautiful plants or thanks to our inland, too. yeah, it made for an interesting t is going on to the commercial. so you guys do this all the time, correct? but you just want

afternoon and the wind out. look, if we take out i have to give our one of our directors and to me a little shout-out for shooting. we some video here of the coast and you can see how that breeze is going to pick up right through the afternoon today. it's going to happen again tomorrow. so just kind of show you future wind gusts here. southerly flow kind of kicks in this afternoon. as you can see, it really pushes in as we get into this evening and then it kind of keeps going as we get into tomorrow afternoon as well. those numbers get up where we could see gusts upwards of 20 miles per hour. not just at the coast, but as you can see, we get tomorrow afternoon. also over to parts of the east bay and the north bay as well. so just be prepared for that. we have been warming up. now. we're going to cool it down. and as you can see that warm up and tomorrow because today, santa rosa 78 turns into 63 tomorrow. and you can see these temperatures right across the board. all rolling down and some of them going down between 10 to 15 degrees. so you're going to notice that you're also going to notice that we do have more marine their presence. so this is later this afternoon. you can see this kind of moving up from the central coast towards

us. and then it really pushes in as we get into our evening north bay. i think particular see an awful lot of this as we go into the overnight and a little bit of drizzle as well as you wake up tomorrow morning. if you're along the coast. so this a little bit of a different profile than we've had the past few days. having said that right now, you can start to see that cloud deck. just starting to approach there. that's why we're seeing it at the golden gate bridge. and as we zoom out, how other parts of california are very already involved in seeing that cloud deck at this hour. but for us, it will really be as we get later into the day today. so what it means is that we're going to have a very different story tomorrow. enjoy your sunny earth day today. it's a beautiful day out there, but then get ready to maybe grab that jacket over the next few days as the clouds kind of move in, temperatures start to drop. and we even a slight chance of a little shower on friday will be overnight thursday into friday. just a tiny chance. and just a little bit. but still a very different profile next weekend. looking pretty good, though. thank you. kyla sounds good. after the break, we find out. >> who will be sleepy us? there is only looks plain.

our earth day, which is kind of nice. we've been watching the uc berkeley resident peregrine falcons very closely. the little chicks are under her. one of them was initially spotted today clearly had just been born. it's a little like downy feathers will turn into a warm, cozy pile of fluff. and annie will occasionally on eggshells that helps her regain the calcium she used to create. that was calcium leach from her bones. the dad was named archie again. he up one point was trying to look at the checks and they apparently feeling very strongly. no, they need to stay warm and cozy under her. bear. and germany recently woke up from hibernation, a winner. the animal welfare group called for paws, kicked off competition called march nap mess. the idea is to find the world sleepy a spare inspired by march madness. of course, the 23 rescue bears %t sanctuaries all over the world. we're being judged on
