8:00 am
the proper morning news. pacifica police shoot and kill a woman after they say he shot her own son, adults and inside of a home. we're going to the latest on that investigation. and it's opening day for major league baseball with thousands of open a's fans expected to protest the season opener will have the story and fast food wage hike is coming to workers in california next week. but some businesses are exempt that has those employees not to have to. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at
8:01 am
>> good morning. 8 o'clock. sun is up and you can actually see. some >> we've got a really nice start to the morning, which was a little iffy because it was raining fairly good last night. and i know the rain's not gone for good coming back. maybe for the weekend on you're exactly right. especially tomorrow into early saturday. still going to be very unsettled out there. but right now behind me, you're getting that nice glow. and our live cams here across the bay. nice to see a little bit of a break from the rain and in the sierra. little break from the snow. take a look at this is diamond peak rate here. wanted to give you a little peek at what's going on up there. if you're heading up to this year tomorrow anticipates i'm really, really slick driving conditions. what we do have right now is still some snow hanging on in the southern sierra, mostly around yosemite rainfall has moved out to the central valley and that's left us in the bay area. whole lot more quiet than we were last night. not to say we're completely dry, though. i've been watching this line of showers sitting right around san mateo on up towards san bruno fo half moon bay and montero, all seeing
8:02 am
some areas of rainfall. so we're not completely dry and watch for those isolated showers popping up at really any point late this morning into early afternoon. besides that, though, we do have a good dose of sunshine and for most of us, it is a solid break from the rain today. 40's to low to mid 50's for your current temperatures. and later on today, we will be looking at highs still hanging on to those low 60's reyna lives on. thank you for that. traffic hazards on the bay bridge this morning. >> last time we checked in, we had a disabled bus right near that treasure island exit. we also have a disabled vehicle right near 7th street. both of those now clear still about a 32 minute ride. if you are going to traveling into the city this morning, 7 turnovers around twenty-three's things a little slow and go there. no hazards, though. 20 minutes along the ridges summersville bridge right now and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls around 40 minutes. stories is back to you. thank you. reyna. >> all right. well, today's a big day for baseball fans as it is opening day. we know the giants are going to start on the road in san diego. there are going to have their home
8:03 am
opener till april 5th and the a's their opening at home. but their biggest fans are going to be in the seats. they're going to be in the parking lot because they're upset about the a's moved our yeah. they're taking a stand. we have kron four's michael thomas live in oakland with more on that. good morning, michael. >> yeah, good morning, everyone. that's right. oakland a's fans plan to pack out the parking lot rather than the actual stadium. but the oakland a's say, well, that's okay. but we're not going to open at the actual parking lot until 2 hours before. so take a look. we've got video up on your screen. i'm gonna break it all down for you. actually just did an interview with organizers of this boycott who say they're expecting thousands of people, which means thousands of cars in that area. now, to give you some background last year, we saw over 25,000 fans show up to the oakland coliseum on opening day to pack it out as a reversed boycott for the team's pending move to las vegas this year. organizers from the last dive bar and the oakland 68 planned a big block party in the a's parking lot offering live entertainment,
8:04 am
food drinks and giveaways the parking lot normally opens up about 4 hours before the game. and organizers tell me it's been like that for the last 55 years. but the oakland a's decided this year. well, the parking lots not going to open up until 2 hours before the game. the game starts at 7. so the parking lot will open up at about 5 o'clock, which is right in the middle of rush hour. essentially throwing a wrench in the boycotts plan, but also causing a traffic jam near the near the coliseum, which sits off of 8.80, and oakland city officials have publicly asked the a's to open up the gates earlier because that traffic jam could be a safety concern. not only is a game happening tonight, but also singer and songwriter. keyshia cole is hosting a concert at the arena which is right next door, the exact same time. so officials from the a's have not made any comments or made any changes to the opening of those gates. they say right now everything set to open up at 5 o'clock back out here live. i just did an interview with one of those organizers. he said that he is
8:05 am
expecting thousands of people to show up just like last year. and he says if you are going to be in that area, they are expecting the line of cars to go all the way near 8.80, and possibly even on the other side of it. so that's what we're looking at right now. if you're heading that way this evening, you may want to find another route because it seems like there's going to be a lot of people there as we get updates from officials from either the a's or the city of epoakland will keep you updated that's a very latest reporting live in oakland michael thomas story. james, we'll send it back to you. >> it is my honor to introduce to you our new top police officer, chief floyd mitchell. >> and with that oakland mayor sheng thao formally introduce the man she handpicked to be the city's next police chief floyd mitchell spoke yesterday about his plans to build public trust and create a safer community. it. >> getting here, getting on the ground and getting out to me. everyone here getting to

know who my council members are getting to know the police department and where we can get better and how we go about getting better. you want to make oakland police department be the employer of choice for the bay area. you want your officers know that they're going to be supported and and that you're going to take care of them both from a benefit standpoint. but you're also going to see them as a person. >> well, among his top priorities is getting crime down, which continues to plague oakland and the police department is still under the control of a federal monitor because of the writers case for more than 20 years ago where officers were caught planting evidence. mitchell says putting changes in place to get out from under that federal monitor is key. >> jeb is to continue to do the work to satisfy those requirements. i'm going to sit down with the monitor and identify specifically what we need to do and how we need to do it to get to the end of road. >> and mitchell's swearing-in date will be sometime in the
