>> for more than 12 hours, investigators focused and they're seen right here behind me. this apartment complex where that man was allegedly shot by his mom. and then a responding officer shot her and the violence just jolted this neighborhood. >> that investigation is underway in pacifica after a tragedy between a mother and her son. police say a man called 9-1-1 wednesday morning and said he was shot by his mom in their home. officers rushed to the apartment francisco boulevard and encountered the mother who they say was trying to drive away. police say the woman then pointed a gun at them officer opened fire and killed her ice. heard >> bunch of gunshots. i think over at least half a dozen neighbors. sue a says at first she thought the sound was firecrackers. but after learning about what happened, she was dumbfounded if she shot her son trying to kill him.

>> i'm sorry for her. but something. something's wrong with her. you your child. >> investigators say the son was found with one gunshot wound and was later taken to the hospital. he is expected to be okay. neighbors tell us they've lived in this quiet beach town for a long time and have never heard of anything like this. anytime somebody dies. it right. just don't see. that's pretty. >> i mean, i feel safe. up to the beach every day and >> well, police say none of their officers were injured and so far no names of anyone involved have been released. police also say that they're going be releasing more information within the next couple of days. and it's also unclear tonight what happened between this mother and her son before the shooting happened in pacifica. dan thorn kron. 4 news.

>> all right, dan, a new at 10 0rd suspect has been arrested in connection to copper wire theft from vta stations in san jose, a santa clara county sheriff's office posting tonight that deputies arrested. 55 year-old michael reader, a long list of charges including grand theft, vandalism and possession of a stolen vehicle. earlier this month, investigators reported that 3 people stole 20 feet of copper wire valued at $10,000.2. of those suspects were arrested on the day of the incident. the former alameda county sheriff's deputy accused of killing a couple in dublin is set to be in court tomorrow. >> the family of the couple was outside court today after district attorney pamela price asked the judge in the case to dismiss enhancement charges, which could make the former deputy devin williams eligible for parole. the judge has denied the motion, which is a relief for the family. >> the judges is good. he knows about the case in u.s. history, but he he knows to be doing the right thing. and

said i'm extremely grateful for what he has done. but is now up to a price to do the right thing and to bring justice to our family and the community. >> williams, the suspect faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted. >> tonight, pleasanton unified is reacting to the death of one of their former students. army officials say the 21 year-old cadet haven't morris drowned while on leave in fort lauderdale, florida. police say no foul play is suspected. a spokesperson for the pleasanton unified school district sent us this statement saying, quote, we are saddened by the loss of one of our former amador valley high school london. we're our hearts go out to the morris family and those who have been touched the lives of during this difficult time. and the statement from principal of amador valley high school. he wrote as a student at amador valley have been is thought of with fondness and admiration by all of his former teachers. his

standpoint. but you're also going to see them as a person. >> crime does continue to plague oakland with violent crimes up by 14%. the police department is also still being monitored by federal officials due to a case for more than 20 years ago where officers were caught planting evidence mitchell plans to move the department out of that relationship. >> my job is to continue to do the work to satisfy those requirements and working with my team to make sure that we do everything that we're supposed to do to satisfy those requirements. i'm going to sit down with the monitor and identify specifically what we need to do and how we need to do it to get to the end of road. >> mitchell will be opd is 12 that chief in the last decade that includes interim chief see will be sworn in sometime in the next 30 >> well, shot showers returning to the bay area tonight. here's what it looked like in pacifica and earlier

here was see a scene where surfers took advantage of the waves before the rain came beautiful out there thank you. >> laurent. yeah, i love to see that rain around the bay area. again, not going to see much more of that. i think for the season. in fact, got a couple of storms that are going to impact a bay area. got one right now. and then another one. the more significant as we head in toward friday out the door tonight. he's getting wet out there. that's for sure to san francisco and around the bay area. the cold front finally sliding on in bringing that rain. and here we go. it took a while to get here. we had a couple of scattered light showers throughout the day today, but then the rain started to pick up this evening. you see the main cold front now moving through the bay area as we speak, that rain sliding on through moderate amounts in some spots of the mountain tops in the north bay about 3 quarters of an inch. but you can see some pockets, some heavier amounts of rainfall now and we'll see more of that, too. so, yes, some of these areas you get is get some downpours. more polling on the roadways, at least through the evening here. and then it looks like as we get in toward midnight

tonight, we're going to see likelihood of more chances of a just more widely scattered showers around the bay area. so overall, things will taper off as the main fund is going to move on through. still some leftover showers out there right now by midnight. that begins to break up a little bit. but scattered showers continuing tomorrow. bigger storm to come. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >> people worry we have no power over our future. but i that's why i'm running for governor. we have the breadth and the power to make california out of for all of us again. >> former state controller betty yee joining the governor's race in california. she posted this video announcing her bid for the state's highest office in twenty-twenty 6. he has spent nearly 40 years in public service. some of it as the state's budget director. she joins a list of candidates including lieutenant governor bleni kounalakis state superintendent tony thurmond and state senator tony atkins. governor gavin newsom is currently serving his final

awaited justice after what's been an extremely hard 2 years for the first time, his sister's ready to talk about what happened to her brother. >> the metal fence along alice chalmers playground in san francisco remains bent from bullets. it was 2 years ago on a sunday afternoon when shots rang out, killing 20 year-old karen carlson. and 22 year-old brandon cheese. he touched so many lives. brandon sister sylvia lopez often visits the area to honor him where a memorial continues to evolve. so many people. >> even his elementary school teacher. seeing that she remembered him. i think it speaks volumes to kind of person. my brother was. >> lopez takes us back to april 3rd 2022. when she found out her brother was killed, calling it the worst day of her family's lives like this can't be. >> and it was just like the most terrible.

>> agonizing pain. >> police say they're looking for at least 2 men involved all got away in a silver honda accord this week, police increased the reward to $250,000 for information that leads to an arrest. we want justice. >> i want these people behind bars. they don't deserve to be out and free and living their lives. when my brothers gone, brandon worked as a private security guard. he was also a barber. lopez says her brother was the most generous person always giving back to his community. he would even go downtown san francisco and >> and put all his equipment in his car in the trunk and he would cut hair for free because that's the kind of person he was. >> brandon leaves behind 3 sisters, a mom and dad as well as his 4 year-old daughter. the family says they desperately want closure. we were robbed of so many beautiful memories of hurt for my parents.

>> the pain that they're feeling the pain, my nieces, you know, having to deal with. i hate that she has to deal with this. i hate that. she why can't just come home? >> one week from today will mark 2 years since these 2 men were killed at the playground. brandon's family plans to gather there with candles and flowers to honor the 2. if you have any information about this case, you're asked to call the san francisco police department. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> all right. let's hope somebody comes forward. thank you. sarah police in berkeley are investigating after a child was shot in the leg last night. they say it happened near the intersection of on our street and alston way by strawberry creek park. officers say they got a call about several gunshots in that area when they got to the scene, they found the child shot. police have not said if they have made any arrests. police have arrested 6 men accused of being involved in a gang-related attack in san jose. they say that. >> 5 of the suspects were

found in southern california. only one of them still lived in san jose and when they arrested him, police say they found this at his home. multiple firearms and pounds of drugs seized their the gang related attack happened back in october. police say they found a man seriously hurt after he was attacked by several people. all 6 men are booked for assault with a deadly weapon. >> across country to carjack somebody. >> claims to a moving car while trying to get away from police officers in san joaquin county. they were chasing the suspect on i-5 when one of his tires blew out. and that's when the man jumped out of his car and then on moving a moving car in an attempt to get away. officers later caught up with the suspect. they opened fire. the suspect was hit and is being treated at the hospital before being

sent to jail tonight, experts say the 2 brothers who were attacked by a mountain lion over the weekend near georgetown east of sacramento in the sierra foothills. >> took the right measures to try scare the big cat off. but this case ended with death. kron four's philippe djegal talked with experts in the bay area. man is spotted animals near his home. >> for the 3rd time in a year and a half, ryan mooney surveillance cameras captured a mountain lion passing through his property in the martinez hills. the most recent spotted march. 11th fitting given incredible pass. mooney knows cougars are around, but fortunately has never come face to face with one. and after learning of the recent deadly attack near sacramento, he hopes he never does. currently. i think we're code sistine. okay. but it is one of those things where i don't know how the mountain lion would react. >> if we cross paths and the california department of fish and wildlife confirms through statements from the victims family that the 2 brothers attacked by a young mountain

lion over the weekend did rely on their training by shouting aggressively standing tall and even throwing something at the big cat. trip, horrible tragedy. >> but that was not enough to prevent this. not land from attacking the 2 of fish and wildlife estimates. the state's mountain lion population is between 4,006 1000. >> this weekend's attack resulted in the first death in 20 years. one brother survived biologist zara mcdonald's with the field, a conservation fund and puma project says human encounters with mountain lions are rare where the attack happened because it is rural. she suspects the brothers were searching for antler sheds near a sleeping lion and it was spooked. she says you are less likely to come across the big cat in the bay area because they are used to us and do whatever they can to stay away. are the urban wild land interface. so we are. >> right at the urban edge lions that navigate.

standing by with the forecast. yeah, guys, that rain coming down around the bay area. not going to be many more stories like that this year. but >> it's raining out there right now. and we're going to see those scattered showers continue. and even tomorrow we'll see mostly sunny skies. couple passing clouds, occasional showers tomorrow, but we've got a bigger storm on the horizon. we'll take a look at that just a moment. but out there right now, certainly it's wet out at sfo delays there because some construction out there on the tarmac. so that's just over an hour. so be prepared for that. if you're headed that way or expecting someone to showers expecting someone to showers continue around the ba snow continuing the high country and well, it's got to go on more steady as we head throughout the evening hours now. and you see some of those bands that are moving through some in yellow there as well. those are stronger bands begin to push through the bay area. so it's going to be on and off for the next couple of hours here before things begin to taper off quiet down that front is going to move on through behind that. we are beginning to see that big green blob begin develop. that could be part of the next system that is going to be pushing on through fact. timing out free overnight tonight. scattered showers

shooter drills have become a new normal at schools. but one state california law maker says the drills are actually causing many students too. experience anxiety, depression. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace talks with the lawmaker who says >> he has legislation he believes can help. >> you're looking at a school shootings rely covered nearly 2 years ago at criminal area high school. it featured crisis actors lying on the ground and on tables pretending to be least with weapons and first responders simulating an on-campus evacuation of the wounded. all of it, something that someone number chris ward recognizes as a necessity to ensure students are prepared in an era when school shootings have become all too common. i have 2 kids in elementary school myself. we need to make sure that we're looking for security gaps are other ways to keep our community safe. he

says, well, drills are rightfully focused on protecting students physically. he believes more attention must turn, turn sharing. the drills are not causing students harm emotionally. we should do a better job, really setting some parameters around active shooter drills so that they're not doing more harm than good. that's why he says he introduced assembly bill 18. 58 also known as the safe and prepared schools act. it will require school districts to set clear standards about how to conduct such drills and ensure the school community is made aware of the drill in advance something sacramento area student arianna williams said did not happen during to drill. she experienced at her high school. >> i had no clue if the lockdown was real or not. she spoke alongside war. but this recent press conference supporting his bill, the swat team filled the halls. the lockdown cause hysteria. i remember some of my classmates crying hyperventilating panicking. and all i could think to do is text my mom and tell her i love her. even some of the drills. >> have had some portable and that sometimes way more of a turn them to each i think

should be exposed to scenarios where they see victims lying around and think pools of blood for a simulated activity like an active shooter drill. it's important to run through that exercise but do so in a way that doesn't induce trauma. and that's why he says a major part of his legislation calls on schools to notify all students and staff about on campus mental health resources. he notes several studies, including this one from the georgia institute of technology showed nationwide up to 42% of students and staff reported an increase in stress. >> anxiety and depression after school shooting trail took place. we need to be prepared to make sure that we can keep our students, our staff and our in a safe space. and while we are still at the beginning of this year's legislative process, as of now, the bill has no formal opposition reporting at the state capitol. wallace kron. 4 news health officials in marin county are about a rise and whooping cough. >> they say ever since december, the county has seen

almost 100 cases. >> many of those from high school students, a physician at kaiser permanente, sandra fell tells to help curb the cases. testing is key. >> that turnaround time and testing is about one day or maybe 2 days. and that's really the gold standard for making the diagnosis. and now with the cluster that we're seeing, i think it is very important that if you have those symptoms that we get past. >> cdc is warning parents to make sure their kids are up to date on all their vaccines. residents in alameda county rallying in support of those who they say were left out of some housing protections. the new just cause law restricts landlords from terminating a residential lease with a tenant has occupied the property for a year or more without just cause. but people at the rally today say the law does little to protect residents who live in unincorporated areas. unincorporated areas such as the even area leaving thousands of families vulnerable to addiction and

displacement. >> are people lined the streets? are people are those who are becoming addicted and why becoming homeless. so we need these. we need these protections and we need this now. >> according to the group runners in the evening area have no local tenant protections rely solely on state law which they say has little local enforcement. >> kron four's profiling top challengers for san francisco's crowded mayoral race. tonight, we're going to look at the candidate who once sat in the mayor's seat for 6 months for stephanie land. she sits down with mark farrell on how he plans to win his job back. >> over the past 5 years, i've seen our city crumbled candidate mark farrell, not mincing words over the problems he says are plaguing san francisco. san francisco used to be the greatest place in the world to raise family. today is not the same. people do not feel safe in their own neighborhoods, let alone downtown the conditions are

streets have never been worse. and our local economy has suffered as a result. you know, we are now the of jokes across our country. and that should not be the case. the venture capitalist stepping back into the ring. >> with city politics where he previously served for 8 years first as district 2 supervisor, which includes the marina pacific heights, presidio heights and north of the panhandle. and serving 6 months as mayor after the death of ed lee and 2017. a key point farrell says that sets him apart from the competition. we don't have time for someone to come learn on the job we need. someone is going hit the ground running on day one. if you are elected mayor, what do you plan to accomplish in your first 30 days? i do believe we need a new police chief. we have lost budget dollars and we can't recruit. >> police officers. so we need a change in leadership promoting what he describes as a 0 tolerance policy on crime while promising to shield the city's public safety services from budget cuts. my budget

plan. >> this year, include the addition of 250 new officers. we need to recruit additional officers transfer officers. we need to bring rep retired officers. >> we also need to flood our police academy with new classes. then we start to get to work on local economic issues. i fully believe we need. we need to use tax incentives to bring employers back to the downtown core. my background includes over 20 years in the private sector. i know what it is to make payroll. i know what it is to see. companies do well and suffer. adding he'll clear all tent encampments in the city within a year as mayor before. >> i took out all over large tent encampments within 6 months. if elected mayor again, i will do it again. i asked farrell if he's in favor of encampment sweeps given the city's ongoing legal battles, i would characterize sweeps. we treat these individuals with respect with compassion. we offer them shelter and housing. but if they refused our offer services, we will

not make it convenient for them. no one is getting better by sleeping in tents and night on the streets of san francisco. this has to stop. this challenge are coming out of the gates swinging. look, san francisco is suffering and what we don't have is any vision out of city hall right now. so as mayor london breed fit to be mayor in 2025, yes or no, no. mayor breed has a great personal story. no doubt about that. but right now, she also has a track record. 6 years of failed leadership inside of city hall. san francisco needs a reboot in san francisco. stephanie lin kron. 4 news. all right. now to our 4 zone forecast as we get a live look right now at the richmond bridge, which looks pretty. >> the wet. yeah. raining here, lawrence. snow in the mountains. yes. really coming down the high country be measured feet in the high country. this pretty decent storm up there right now. so they're chain up on 80 and probably going to be doing so on 50 as well as we're going to see more of that snow moving in throughout the night tonight and continued kind of

on and off through the weekend to, in fact, you can see right here very latest, a doppler radar. we've got some of that snow that is tracking over the mountain right now. 80's got a lot of it right now near donner summit. so that will intensify overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. then break off to scattered showers throughout the day. but couple spring storms are rolling through a much more like winter. that's keep things going in the high country. the snow level starting out 5500 feet or so. will be dropping down to about 3500 feet by tomorrow. snow amounts maybe one to 2 feet of snow over the next couple days in the high country. and you see a lot more than that over the weekend. so you can expect some travel delays up there chain controls from time to time. they're seeing that now on 80 and of course, some gusty winds to go along with that over the peaks as well. western looking at those winter storm warnings right now. all shaded in red here for the mineral quincy all the way down into bear valley. got winter weather advisories in purple, continuing from the taller area all the way down toward the u.s. some of the valley. a really rough go traveling. the high country got to be careful in the coming days. the storm's going to continue to roll on tomorrow's go to break up a

little bit. some scattered snow showers, cold temperatures, highs only in the 30's. all that fresh powder up there. friday, though, we've got a pretty big storm coming in that will bring a mixture of snow and some wind gusting into the high country and dangerous travel conditions into the weekend. well, it's really coming down right now at the golden gate bridge. you can see how wet it is out there at this time. that will continue to move through as we head through tonight and then things going to begin to taper off, turn into showers after midnight tonight. a partly cloudy for tomorrow. the chance of us widely scattered shower. unsettled weather, though. more storms coming into the weekend. so the rain out there right now. we've got pop-up showers just about everywhere you go in a san francisco, some heavier amounts east bay. also looking at some rain and in the south bay, some that rain begin to pick up as well. so we're going to be dealing with us through the midnight hour or so before things begin to change. as we look toward your long range forecast. see this big batch of green off the coastline. this is going to be the one that may be the last significant storm of the season rolling on in. can see the center that area of low pressure just off the coastline likely to generate some strong gusty winds that pushed through showers, thunderstorms into saturday,
