officials in marin county are issuing a warning as a highly contagious respiratory infection, known as whooping cough is on the rise since december. the county has seen almost 100 cases at a lot of them are high school students. so we want to learn a little bit more about what's going on here. so we're joined by a doctor from kaiser permanente. this is doctor persaud. thank you for joining us. thank you for having me, ok? so what's making people sick? >> the infection is caused by a bacteria called bordetella pertussis and bordetella pertussis is one of the most contagious the infections that can afflict children and
2:46 pm
adults. the vaccine is very effective for many years. but then it starts to wane in effectiveness over time. and this was something that was noted by one by a pair of my kaiser colleagues a few years ago, doctor within doctor katz. and so every few years we see surgeon that cases of puerto tele infection and then those usually subside as the next cohort of children and to the system and there with with still active community. so it's it's very important that a child or a young adult who has severe parents a coughing to the point just violent productive cop, violent, dry coughing or coughing to the point of nausea. it's very important that they get identified, that they get in touch with their position that they get tested and then that they get treated. the treatment is about 5 days of an about within about a college that for my son. and
2:47 pm
it's very important that during that 5 days they isolate until until the infection clears until the bacteria has cleared. so what's the difference here between just a regular cough? there was something going around are like school community. >> mostly in february, just like one after another. people were just coughing i had for awhile. we kept calling it the black long because it was like taking weeks for it to go away. what's the difference being that issue that was going around and the whopping cough? how it sounds like the phlegm that comes out. how can you distinguish between the 2? >> so it's a that's a very tough question. ultimately, the gold standard of distinguishing is to get a sample from the nose in from them out. and that's the nays are fringe will sample sent for testing that turnaround time and testing is about one day or maybe 2 days. and that's really the gold standard for making the diagnosis. and now with the cluster that we're seeing, i think it is very important that if you have those symptoms that we get tested because i think you make a very good point. sometimes the
2:48 pm
differences between the standard viral infections and border. tell infection can be subtle. in general viral infections should start getting better pretty quickly within a few days. and the cough should last for much more than a week or maybe 2 weeks or you're having these prolonged copping. that raises the suspicion. and then now that we're seeing confirmed cases of bordetella infection. and we know how contagious it is. it's going to be really important to have a fairly high degree of suspicion and to get the help from a physician and and then potentially get tested and treated fairly early. and you said it's super contagious. and in marin county, they're dealing with it in. >> high school students right now is this is that an age group that you would see with this type of infection? >> so what what my colleagues, doctor, katz and doctor wait and then subsequently many other investigators have identified as that. the latest generation of vaccine tends to wane after several years. and so we see it as a cohort effect every few years. the
2:49 pm
last time we would have expected to see this was about 4 years ago. but around that time was when schools are closed, that learning went virtual and that when people did congregate, they did so with masks. so we didn't see that, which is which is terrific. but i think we were due for it and we're sort of seeing it now. this seems to be something that happens every few years. the hope is that the next generation of vaccines will have a much more durable and sustained response to a longer time about to hit like spring break time. people are going to do a lot of traveling. >> any advice on how not to get this right? really our great so i think probably the single most important thing is if you are >> vaccinationohelps a great deal. both in terms of reducing the vulnerability and reducing the severity, even even if it's not a perfect. so certainly if if you haven't had the vaccine, then you should get vaccinated. and the really it's incumbent people who are sick to get help and
2:50 pm
identify whether they have this infection or not. so it doesn't spread masking does help, but that's not always super practical as it's not as common. yeah. so i think our priority is to vaccinate yourself and then may be responsible for years of if you are sick to get the help you need because it is a 5 day isolation period for the duration around about it no one's got time for that. >> real talk about the last a few seconds that we have here. you mentioned you should see your doctor possibly get some sort of antibiotic. but is there anything over the counter that you recommend when people are just like packing up a like this? >> unfortunately, what's been tried over many different strategies have been tried to mitigate the symptoms of this really terrible coughing, these parents because all coughing, nothing really works that cough medicines over the counters, some prescription medications doesn't seem to be super helpful with controlling the cough. so and about help what taken early on it reduces the duration. and again, the

vaccination really makes difference backs new people. their symptoms last for potential 2025 days and unvaccinated 6200 days. so the vaccine really does make a difference. all right. doctor shot, thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate your have a lot of questions about this. >> cop for a while. so thanks for making time for us. happy to help. thank so thank you. california's new minimum wage law kicks in next week. but fast food workers are already losing their jobs over this. the state's minimum wage will rise to $20 an hour starting on monday pizza chain. so the ones making the basic biggest cuts as a result of pizza hut previously announced layoffs for 1200 delivery drivers. some outlets have also cut deliveries altogether. roundtable also laying off about 1300 delivery drivers. and chipotle says it's going to raise prices in order to comply with the higher minimum wage. looking outside right
