>> live higher. read entire key bridge in the harbor. >> our top story tonight, 6 people are missing and presumed dead after a cargo ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in baltimore. you see video of it here destroying the span of the francis scott key bridge in just a matter of seconds, causing it to plunge into the river below. the tragedy is sending shock waves across the country, including here in the bay area. >> like baltimore, the bay is another big shipping hub with large cargo ships passing under multiple bridges, day in and day out before making port. so could something like

this happened here? our justine waltman joining us now with more on that just seen. so this has happened before several times over the past couple of decades. but one big ships have crashed into the sandra fell for the bay bridges. >> the damage has not been as catastrophic. >> the francis scott key bridge was a steel truss bridge, a design that's fairly uncommon here in the bay area. its closest analog, these southbound section of the benicia martinez bridge. a 1.7 mile span built in 1962, key bridge complete in 1977, and a little shorter. at 1.6 miles, the big difference, the height, the key bridge had about 50 feet more clearance to allow large container ships to pass underneath what it did not have enough of protection around the supports all 6 major toll bridges in the bay area have vendor systems built to deflect incoming ships. in 2007, the container ship,

costco, bruce, and lost its way in the bay fog hitting a tower on the bay bridge. but the impacted more damage to the surrounding coastline. then it did to the bridge spilling over 50,000 gallons of fuel into the bay killing thousands of sea birds and 2013 and empty tanker struck a bay bridge tower damaging 30 to 40 feet of the surrounding fender. but it didn't even affect traffic on the bridge above a bigger concern in the bay area. earthquakes, the magnitude 6.9 loma prieta earthquake damage to the bay bridge eastern span in 1989. that part of the bridge like the key bridge in maryland was a truss bridge. it's since been replaced with a new span that incorporates a suspension style bridge similar to the golden gate suspension. bridges can withstand earthquakes better than any other type of bridge and retrofitting set to begin this year will make the golden gate even stronger with seismic

upgrades. both withstand an 8.0 earthquake. the strongest the san andreas fault could produce. the retrofit of the golden gate should be done by 2029. i'm justine waltman. all send it back to you. >> justine, thank you. now to the latest in the case of a 3 year-old girl who died while her family was performing. >> an exorcism on her prosecutors called their final witness yesterday and now a judge will decide if the family will stand trial. the girl's mother, uncle and grandfather are all accused of killing her in a horrifying exorcism in a backyard church in san jose. carter says she died of suffocation and smothering. they have all pleaded not guilty to charges. the judge has until april to decide if the da has enough evidence to put all 3 on trial, they are being held without bond in county jail. if convicted, the 3 could face. 25 years to life in prison.

>> uc berkeley police are asking for the public's help. they're trying to identify these 5 people who are accused of disrupting a campus event hosted by a jewish student organization. this was february 26th. police say members of the crowd forced their way into zeller buck playhouse, injuring guests and police officers causing property damage. the incidents are classified as hate crime said he was able to identify any of these folks is asked to contact uc berkeley police. >> making. council member jordan. remember tatum yes, ice merlot past. yes, the motion carries. >> city of albany has joined a list of bay area cities calling for a cease-fire in gaza. city council held a special meeting last night and unanimously passed its cease-fire resolution. the east bay city had taken slower approach than other cities. they first created a committee

to discuss and write up the resolution, which was then followed by several public meetings. albany's mayor, thanks the community for keeping the process civil. >> francisco's most iconic and long serving lgbtq+ venues is close to reopening. the study announced in april 20th opening for its new spot on folsom street. the night club operated for 55 years before closing in twenty-twenty due to the pandemic. owners say the new location will be twice as big as the old spot, which was notoriously crowded. they say it will have 2 new barson new stage and the sound system. >> sugar bowl resort and kirkwood mountain resort are extending their ski season by 2 weeks. the new closing date is now april 28th. officials say the dates are conditional and to rain will change as warmer days continue. we do want to get you a check of when those warmer days. how

from this first storm system in more, i think a much bigger storm system rolls in as we head toward the weekend. so you can likely expect some travel delays if you're headed up there for the holiday weekend, be prepared. that's the significant storm that we're going to be much more powerful. you carry with it. some strong gusty winds as a possibility. you could see some blizzard conditions at times over the weekend friday and into saturday. winter storm warnings going up for the next couple f days here across the sierra nevada. you got winter weather advisories to the great lake tahoe area all the way down in the mammoth in yosemite valley. we're going to see that snow kind of on and very cold temperatures. if your traveling that way. but boy, it is really going to come down across many of the peaks here in california. even northern california, get the shots to chest area, get the upper lakes area. you're talking 3 to 6 inches, maybe more than that. there across some of the peaks. we're talking 3, maybe 4 feet of snow. thank you, lawrence. music mogul, diddy's team is speaking out a day after the raids on his mansions. sean diddy combs attorney is

slamming the searches yesterday as a gross use of excessive force and a widening trafficking probe. diddy's la and miami mansions were rated yesterday. >> by the department of homeland security. new video just released by tmz which is now reporting federal agents trashed the homes as they searched for evidence. attorney aaron dyer says are was calling the raid a witch hunt based on merit list. accusations there are several allegations against combs involving trafficking, soliciting and assault. >> getting a raid more than one place that you go simultaneously so that somebody from las angeles can't phone somebody in miami and vice that doesn't mean that they have evidence that somebody has unsealed documents that they're looking for and are will destroy documents. it means it makes all the sense in the world not pass the target or targets of an investigation.

>> combs has denied the allegations claiming they are being made by people looking for a quick payday. the probe is being carried out by federal investigators from new york. >> today, new numbers are out showing just how much fentanyl the state of california sees last month, according to data from the newsom administration, the california national guard last month help sees more than 1 million fentanyl pills statewide. that includes nearly 600,000 pills along the california mexico border. in a statement, governor newsom said his decision last year to increase tha number of cal guard service members at the border has helped. now he's calling on congress to take action, too better. secure the border. beginning july first bars and nightclubs in california will be required to have drug testing kits. the california department of alcoholic beverage control made the announcement this week. it's an effort to protect anybody

from being drugged while have a good night out. the law will impact about 2400 businesses across the state. these test kits come in the form of test strips stickers, straws or other devices, businesses that do not comply could have their liquor licenses affected. >> the supreme court heard arguments today on the first abortion case since overturning roe v wade 2 years ago. washington correspondent maddie beer-temple reports on how the case could impact access to the abortion pill. >> anti-abortion groups are challenging the fda's, relax rules on the abortion pill that have made it easier to access in recent years. >> protesters were back on the steps of the supreme court and people deserve access to for the first abortion case since the dobbs decision, the alliance for hippocratic medicine says the fda's guidelines are unsafe. they allow the abortion drug mifepristone to be sent by mail and without an in-person

doctor's visit without ever having been checked by a doctor for life-threatening conditions that reckless, the alliance is made up of medical groups that oppose abortion. they're asking the high court to limit access to the drug without question. the fda's actions have made taking chemical abortion drugs. last say, but lawyers for the drug makers say research shows it is safe. the fda extensive body of evidence. the biden administration defended the fda in court saying opponents lacked legal standing to bring the case because they aren't harmed by the fda's rules. we don't think they come within 100 miles of the kind of circumstances court has previously identified. the court seemed concerned that the case could have broader impacts on how many government agencies to their business. this is the voice of justice neil gorsuch. and this case seems like a prime example of turning what could be a small lawsuit. >> into a nationwide

california superintendent of schools, tony ghurmond, is backing a proposal to make. >> financial education, a graduation requirement. if you want to go to public schools here >> earlier this year, we highlighted one of these programs being taught at an elementary school in oakland. our eytan wallace spoke one-on-one with thurman about the effort. >> well, here at the california department of education, thurmond told me he believes are required. personal finance course could be a game-changer for students and soon you the voters. >> could have the final say. this is something that will have tremendous benefits for our student. that's the message state's superintendent of public instruction. tony thurmond hopes to convey about a proposal to make a course in personal finance, a graduation requirement in california. public schools. at the california department of education. thurmond spoke to

this group of educators and financial literacy professionals about why he believes making such a course mandatory would have a long-term impact. students have access to learn about personal finance. they're less likely to have debt be able to make great decisions about their future. and their finances and they get education that often isn't provided in the home. in the past. members of the legislature have tried to introduce bills to mandate a personal finance high school course. but those proposals failed. but now supporters behind a new effort are hoping to bring the idea directly to voters. last month with the support of thurmont, they turned in nearly 900,000 signatures to qualify the measure for the november ballot. they need just under 600,000 of those signatures to be considered valid to officially qualify for the november election. we hope that people will support and we think this is a great thing for california kids. it's a message with valerie chapman agrees and educator from oakland. she's the founder and ceo of financial literacy for

kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching 4th and 5th graders about saving and investing. well, this is extremely important because studies have proven that students learn or develop their financial habits at an early age habits that will, you know, last them a lifetime. still, some are skeptical. >> in an op-ed for the nonprofit publication cal matters last fall columnist dan walters road adding new mandates takes class timy from basics that too many students are not already mastering financial media. literacy classes are pointless for kids who cannot to him out or read at their grade level. but thurmond sees it differently. it can save a life report with students who are in tough neighborhoods or schools that, you know, i've had many challenges and we see students performing well academically, but being engaged in life and what their future is going to be. we think that personal finances, important ingredient to success for all of our students. and it's unclear where all legislative republicans, dan, on this proposal, but gop senator and former senate minority leader scott wilk says he supports

but things well about shift gears again. we're going back to some rainy weather. it looks like as we heat toward the day tomorrow, maybe a couple scattered showers during the day. but the main event. >> not come until really tomorrow evening. and then that's when things get going overnight. a moderate amount of rain moving on through a beautiful off toward the golden gate bridge. right now, the breeze is blowing outside. right now. you've got mostly clear skies. we'll see clouds developing throughout the night tonight, though, that breeze will continue along the coastline, turning more southerly overnight tonight as that front begins to approach tomorrow, mostly cloudy, a few scattered showers throughout the day. and again, that rain really kind of picking up as we head toward the evening tomorrow and then unsettled weather continues. i think we've got a stronger storm that may be the last significant storm of the season could roll through on fridays. we're seeing some changes after that. cool. 54 breezy i'm right now. 64 and pleasant in san jose. the 62 in lemore 65 right now in concord. how about 67 degrees in pittsburgh? looking nice there right now. that's for sure. 62 degrees in app. and 61 right now in petaluma that sea breeze continues to blow outside. but those winds we'll

begin to switch southerly as we see that cold front moving a little bit closer. and you can see just off the coastline right now beginning to put itself together, not a real strong storm, not the first one, but will bring some rain to the bay area. see it coming on in as we head throughout the day tomorrow. more snow going to be falling across the high sierra nevada behind that. maybe a couple lingering showers on thursday. couple rainbows that day, too. and then as we get to friday, that one looks a little more intense. in fact, you can see the center of that area of low pressure just off the coastline of san francisco, the bay area. well, that could generate some big-time winds as that comes through. maybe some 45 mile an hour gusts along with that storm system and some heavy rain as it moves on by showers continuing into saturday. the possibility some thunderstorms, maybe even lingering shower. unfortunately on easter sunday, something to think about if you've got some plans and then looks like after that, we start to dry things out as we head into april. so a big changes in the got a lot of rain to get through those. we get all these totals. some expecting boy through this for storm system, not a whole lot of rain, but then as you start to add up with the next one,
