6:00 am
>> right now on the kron, 4 morning news. breaking news from the east coast. a major bridge in baltimore collapses after a cargo ship crashes into it. rescue crews are now looking for multiple people in the water. oakland will soon meet its new police chief as community leaders lay out problems he'll need to tackle once he takes over. and presidential candidate robert kennedy junior explains what he's looking for in a running mate ahead of his big announcement in oakland. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 6. >> well, glad you're up tuesday. up early at 06:00am. i'm daria. i'm james. yeah. lots to get to on the news
6:01 am
front. we will hear in just a moment. but first we have kind of a cool looking shot behind us. yeah. there were some high clouds that i know is this morning, john, yet not really talking fog, but you're exactly right. some clouds that should be looking at above us. and also as you're looking at, you might see that bright moonlight this morning that in a few of our views as reflecting very nicely on the bay to get this tuesday started. can see that right here from berkeley hills -pcamera. kind of a bright star to the morning. you go. nice view out there looking out from the east bay hills on into the bay. what we are seeing is dry skies notably across the bay area. i do want to know that we do have a few snow showers up in the sierra. if you're heading up that way and some major snowfall heading to the sierra starting tomorrow afternoon. sun. que buckle up for that. if you're getting up there, temperatures in the 40's to 50's right now. definitely chilly. the further north you go with some upper 30's in northern napa county right now. later on today, we will be in the mid to upper 60's. our most mild day of the forecast. and our only dry day from start to finish. i'll be
6:02 am
talking the return of our showers starting in your full forecast rain. all right. we'll take advantage of the dry conditions out there. if you are traveling today, traveling into the city right now, 12 minute ride, the meter lights are on. so that slowing you down? accidents or hazards on the bridges. >> that's the good news. 81 to 1, 4, or san matteo bridge in across towards the peninsula. was somerville ridge just short of 9 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls, 18 reaches back to you. >> it entire bridge entire bridges in the harbor. i advise traffic from coming through the bridge. again. the entire bridges fall into the harbor. >> well, there you hear the call the alerts. that's the breaking news overnight. a major bridge in baltimore collapses. all caught on camera will loop it again. so you can see it. a container ship crashed into one of the major support pillars. and that brought the entire span down. this was early this morning. and again, that
6:03 am
support beam just gave way under the incredible weight of that cargo ship. and think about what that bridge is made up. i mean, it is high steve metal steel. similar in nature to richmond, sandra fell bridge high with the trust section there working its way across the water. emergency calls went out there calling this a developing mass casualty event. you can see rescue crews have been assembling on the banks on either side of that bridge because they've got to wonder of, james, you are saying this happened at around one 30 in the morning and they're clearly headlights on the spanned highlighted there in that bar. so you've got people in cars that came down. any other people, construction people, anybody who was on that bridge and those waters are freezing. it is dark and it's been how many hours since it happened at about one 30 this we know that the faa is restricting aircraft right now from flying over the wreckage of that bridge. they need to keep the skies clear for coast guard and other rescue aircraft that are scanning the
6:04 am
waters right now with infrared cameras. they're trying to detect heat signatures in the water because it started mentioned it's it's freezing out there and there were people working. we do know there was a crew working on the bridge. so you've got people out of cars. you've got people in cars. and then when you look at the height and the size of that container ship, you've got to know that this is a normal route for container ships to go. and so why didn't they know even in the darkness? >> that the bridge was there was it was it there there? but, you know, satellites or their gps were there, you navigation system wasn't working. was it? they were off course. did that. we don't know. they clearly have a designated path that they travel every day back and forth underneath the section of the bridge that allows cargo ships that tall to pass its like all the cargo ships that come in and out of san francisco bay. there's a certain path that they have to take to declare the bay bridge and get underneath the golden gate bridge. >> the bar pilots are on board which probably explain that the captain of cargo ships that take them across the
6:05 am
oceans aren't the same ones who navigate the cargo ships when they're in port. they have a bar. pilots come out to the cargo ship in. this is a pilot whose experience with the waters knows exactly how to navigate these cargo ships to the terminals and back out to open water where the captain of the vessel in and so these bar pilots are expert experience. they know the port baltimore harbor like the back of their hand like the bar pilots here in san francisco bay writes why the bar pilot didn't know they were off course is a big question right now. that needs to be answered. no. yeah. as you would think they more than anybody else would know exactly how to get the ship underneath the bridge safely like they do every day. and clearly it doesn't fit underneath the and not at this height. that's another issue to think about when cargo ships go through as you've seen them through the bay. >> when they're stacked full their way lower, right? can see that bow is in the water when they are not full their
6:06 am
raise tire. and that makes a difference to incur in terms of the clearance. that's right. we should mention that at this point, the rough numbers we have are that 2 people >> were pulled from the water, which is great. however, one has serious injuries that we know and we have a number that crews may be looking for 7 people, but that that number could change. this is a very fluid situation this morning. we'll be keeping our eye on. those rescue operations were difficult tonight when it was dark. but now that the sun is up are starting to hear word from. >> rescue personnel on scene. the dive operations now have begun. so they're now looking above and of course, below the water, hoping to still find some survivors case. we'll keep you posted on that. that's the big breaking news story nationally. now let's go to the east bay. the owners of an oakland laundromat are speaking out after an employee was violently attacked. owners tell us that they're upset over how the incident was handled. we have kron four's tiffany justice with the story. >> my mind like, all this is they're going do me. but i saw
