>> news station, this is. at 11. >> good evening. thanks for being with us tonight on kron. 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. governor gavin newsom is taking a stance on the war in gaza and a letter to the state's muslim palestinian american and arab american communities. today, the governor called for an immediate cease-fire and the call is coming one night before the u.s. is expected to the united nations security council to back a cease-fire and hostage deal. kron four's dan thorn joins us live in the newsroom today with reaction from the bay area's most of them community. good evening, death. >> grant in the letter published today, the governor condemns the ongoing and horrific loss of innocent civilian life in gaza. and he says he's now joining president biden in calling for an immediate cease-fire. this

comes after months of pressure and accusations that the governor was not listening to the state's arab american communities, the bay area's council on american islamic relations says they welcome today's announcement and hope that it encourages other elected leaders to follow suit. >> governor gavin newsom is now joining the cholus of people calling for an immediate cease-fire in gaza. in a letter to california's muslim, palestinian american and arab american communities. newsom says it's time to work toward peace. yesterday, cease-fire. >> could have saved today's martyrs is a line that we have used over and over again in our advocacy. i would say that early for. >> for months, organizations like the bay area's council on american islamic relations or cair have been pressuring elected officials to demand a cease-fire in gaza. aren't blue executive director of care says the cease-fire is necessary to save innocent

lives, though we have been asking for a cease-fire in october. we welcome that called even now. >> palestinians are facing it could pass up like nothing we've seen before. either. they are bombed where they are starved. the governor's letter also acknowledge the rise in anti-muslim discrimination and hate. >> care national says in the months following the october 7th attack on israel, anti-arab bias jumped more than the governor's statements come during the holy month of ramadan for blue and many muslims. this year's observance is incredibly somber. >> but they're not giving up. we welcome the governor's greetings during this blessed the time. and we are even more prayerful. and we're committed to action and protest to continue to advocate for a cease-fire. >> the united states call to the un for an immediate

ceasefire in gaza is tied to the release of israeli hostages in an increase and humanitarian aid. hamas said that it will release hostages only if the war ends. while israel says it will only discuss a temporary pause in the fighting in the newsroom. dan thorn kron, 4 dan, thank you. in the meantime, the san francisco bay area office of care >> is calling on san bruno officials to issue a public apology over what they say happened during last week's city council meeting. >> care says city officials refused to let muslims attending the meeting, break their fast and pray inside city hall. the groups sent this letter to san bruno's. mayor and it care says muslim residents had previously request aommodations for fasting. as the meeting fell on the second night of ramadan. but city staff reportedly denied that request mere hours before the meeting stating city policy prohibits food in the lobby. this despite the presence of a vending machine, a kiosk for

snacks and pastries and in area to congregate inside city hall, fasting constituents were instead instructed to break their fast and make their prayer outside surrounded by police presence. the letter asked the mayor to clarify the city policies used to justify their actions and engage in comprehensive islamophobia training. >> the baby who was killed by that speeding suv. and san francisco has now been identified 2 months old. callie ramos, pinto de oliveira was with his family at a bus stop saturday when an suv came barreling towards them. the 2 months old was being treated at the hospital for several days after the weekend crash. but died yesterday. the family had been waiting for a bus to go to the zoo over the weekend. the crash is now taking the lives of all 4 family members, including a one year-old. 78 year-old mary fong. lau was originally arrested for the crash, but her lawyer confirms she's been released and no

charges have been filed. he also says the public seems to not understand how the legal process works. there's this presumption that because this tragic accident happened. >> that must have been a crime, right? the reality is that investigation is being conducted to determine whether or not there was wrongdoing or malfeasance or criminal negligence. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says asked for patience as investigators gather more information. >> saying toxicology results can take more than 30 days to obtain. and she also says it's going to take time to go over all the operating systems of the suv. wow was driving. >> let's get you a check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live look now at sfo this evening. lot of folks coming in for this weekend are. going to deal with a lot of rain. >> yeah. last weekend was most people would say chief

meteorologist lawrence karnow is with us now to time out the rain tomorrow. yeah. it looks like it is on the way. in really just off the coastline right now. so here we go. we've got a couple of clouds floating in overhead tonight. already they'll be increasing throughout the dry. no rain just yet. but by tomorrow, everything begins to change. so temperatures out the door right now. we've got some 50's the most part of fairly mild. 58 degrees in san jose. a cooler. 51 in napa and santa rosa. 56 in san francisco. see the storm clouds out there right now. and you can see a doppler radar scanning skies most the rain off the coastline. that's just part of a series of storms that are going to impact the bay area here in the next few days. and it's going to be interesting. we've got these storms coming in now and you can see some instability with that as they come through. fact, one lightning strike just off the coastline. there of northern california. we may see a couple lightning strikes here in the bay area with these storms. so let's time it out for as we head through the night tonight. a lot of clouds flowing overhead, staying mostly dry. the commute early on the winds will be kicking about the south as we head toward the morning getting a little blustery by noon. that

rain is in northern california in passing the parts of the north bay. and then as you head toward the afternoon, that begins to sag south rain spreading across the bay area through the evening hours will be heavy at times to watch out for the possibility of a thunderstorm. >> thank you, lawrence. the man killed in a wrong-way crash following a police chase on 5.80 in oakland earlier this week has been identified as 57 year-old lee david wiener of lafayette. police say a wiener was driving a bmw and tuesday when a truck involved in a police crash. a police chase crashed into him head on. it all started with a burglary in else to which then led to that chase. police say they stopped chasing when the fleeing truck started heading the wrong way on westbound 5.80, up. i-80 in or at the iea to emerge. the suspects suffered major injuries and are facing criminal charges to date. the california highway patrol is searching for the suspect in tuesday's freeway shooting. the shooting happened just before 08:00pm along interstate 80.

>> at mcbride avenue in richmond, one person was shot but survived. the chp is asking anyone who may have info to give them a call. it's been almost a month since the oakland police commission delivered its list. its latest list of candidates for the city's next police chief to mayor sheng thao. but we still don't know what the mayor is planning to do with that list. the list includes cincinnati police department lieutenant colonel lisa davis, new york city assistant deputy mayor for public safety. louis molina, former san leandro police chief abdul pridgen and retired lubbock, texas police chief floyd mitchell today. mayor thao spoke with a saying the process to find a new chief takes time. it's what she said. obviously we're not hearing from her at the beginning of the month. >> the list of candidates was handed to mayor sheng thao too

review the choices and possibly conduct her own interviews. 4, the 4 finalists and again, today we spoke with the mayor about what she's going to do. >> i have to do my due diligence. do a thorough review. you know, i can tell you migration of a panel interview has been conducted and i am moving forward in a steadfast, moving expeditiously. but at the same mee diligence to ensure, you know, any checks and balances are implemented, making sure that this person is going to be the right person for the city of oakland. >> oakland has been without a permanent police chief for more than a year. now. >> since mayor thao fired former chief leronne armstrong. >> today marks 15 years since 4 oakland police officers were killed in the line of duty in march of 2009 mark down again. and officer john heggie were ambushed. the suspect shooting

and killing them before barricaded himself in a nearby apartment. sergeant ervin romans and dance the tide and wet in after the suspect. they were both shot at as well. the suspect was eventually killed by police. that day remains the deadliest day in the history of oakland. police. >> coming up, changes are coming to the 9.88 lifeline system. why officials are saying the service is getting better. plus, we hear from the couple accused of staging a kidnapping in toledo almost 9 years ago. a story >> now become the central point of a new netflix documentary and a major insurance company is stopping policy renewals in parts of the bay. how it could affect

>> another blow to bay area, homeowners and renters state. farm announced today it will not renew more than 70,000 policies for properties in high fire danger areas over the next year. zip codes locally that will see the most number of cancellations are in and around santa rosa. napa, piedmont. orinda and lafayette state farm says starting in july it will stop renewing. it will drop about 30,000 homeowners renters another property insurance is and in august, it will also stop offering and renewing commercial apartment policies. one industry expert says paying out money after all, these fires has become unsustainable for lots of insurance companies. >> state farm's the last remaining company that has not non renewed a single

homeowners insurance policy. since the big fires 2017. so as the market leader, they really held on longer than anyone else. >> state farm says affected customers will be notified this summer. >> santa rosa police say they've arrested 2 gang members in connection to an assault on a 13 year-old officers say the teen was walking to school last thursday when several alleged gang members wearing blue clothing jumped out of a car and started punching and kicking the teen. the 2 people arrested have been identified as 19 year-old joshua biz on ortiz from santa rosa. and 25 year-old victor garcia, roman from windsor. the 13 year-old was injured, but did not need to go to the hospital. a 14 year-old is in custody in the east bay accused of trying to steal cars. >> livermore police say the first attempt was made last tuesday and downtown parking garage near the intersection of livermore and railroad avenues. officers say the kid

pretended to have a gun in his pocket and threatened to harm the victim. if she didn't give up the car. police then received for more reports of similar incidents. 4 days later, this teenager is now facing multiple counts of attempted carjacking, attempted robbery and criminal threats. >> a bipartisan group of u.s. senators are making it easier for users of the 9, 8, 8, suicide and crisis lifeline to get the help they need. previously 9, 8, 8, calls were routed to a call center based on the person's area code, not their current location. the new provisions will fix that. crowding calls to the nearest a call center based on location, california senator alex padilla says he's excited about these improvements. >> by working to route calls colors at 2 locations. rather than by the phones area code. we're going to be in a position to be able to provide care as quickly safely as possible.

>> padilla says this new routing system for 9, 8, 8, is similar to how the 9-1-1 system works. >> my weather time as we take a live look out here at the golden gate bridge. rain coming to us. will we get snow in the sierra? >> the big question, lawrence has the answer. i think a ton of snow, not just a few inches. talking about feet of snow across the sierra nevada this weekend alone by next week. boy, several feet in more across much of the sierra. so good news for them. they're going to get a series of storms. but if you're traveling up there, you really got to be careful. these storms are going to be unseasonably cold. the series of spring storms moving in and they're going to continue not only through this weekend about probably all the way through next week to that snow level dropping all the way down to about 3500 feet as we head in towards sunday could see another foot, maybe 2 feet of snow above 5,000 feet. that means lake level there and tall. we're going to see a ton of snow. you expect some travel delays there as well. chain controls from time to time and some gusty winds. these storms come through. see

the winter storm warnings now up across the slopes of the sierra. going continue right through friday into sunday as well. and probably going to get extended again in the next week as we've got more on the way. temperatures really drop off over the weekend. some showers beginning tomorrow. then that snow moves in on saturday and sunday out the door. tonight. we've got some partly cloudy skies. we've got some rain on the way, though. here comes first front moving in, barreling in by tomorrow afternoon. that cold showers continuing on and off throughout the day on saturday. probably some lingering showers now on sunday may be another chance of some light showers as we head in toward monday. bigger storm moves in by the middle of next week. and again, by next friday, we've got another significant storm system moving in. so all told we're gonna start to add up some pretty impressive rain totals. i think with the storms, a lot of snow for this year. lot of 50's and 60's tomorrow, maybe 70 degrees in the south bay with some southerly winds and probably san jose. but then after that, that all goes away. much cooler temperatures on the way unsettled weather, possibly when you have maybe even a couple of thunderstorms as the storm systems roll on through specially on saturday and early on sunday. week we

go to spring. because goes back to write direct again. yeah, i don't really structure. we're just getting new. so the sunshine was nice while it lasted. thank you. the couple wrongfully accused of staging a kidnapping of allay in 2015. >> well, they're speaking publicly about their experience. the story of denise huskins and aaron quinn was recently featured in a netflix documentary american nightmare 9 years ago this month, the couple was restrained and drugged and that delay home they lived in. dennis was then kidnapped and raped. toledo police, however, seaside hoping that by sharing their story. they can keep this from happening again to someone else. >> you don't have to believe every person who comes to speak to you. but as soon as you say, i don't believe this person. and that cuts off the opportunity for you to find out more.

>> matthew mueller here was sentenced to 31 years in state prison eventually for kidnapping huskins. he's also serving out a 40 year sentence for federal crimes. huskins and quinn, one to 2 and a half million dollar settlement with the city of vallejo. but they say that to this day, nobody from the city's police department has directly apologize to them for what happened. >> it's a night of glamour and giving in san francisco, the american red cross holding its 39th annual gala at pier 27 tonight. the event is a fundraiser for red cross blood services which supplies 40% of the nation's blood supply. red cross officials say more importantly, it's to raise awareness about blood donations. >> oftentimes say the number one reason people don't donate blood. they weren't asked. so we're trying to make sure that we get the message out there that can make that task because every 2 seconds someone in the united states needs what? >> they have been asking for a little while now. last year's
