study out. a ucf shows that fatty liver disease is impacting latinx children more than any other group. so joining us now to discuss this is the author of the study. >> doctor, sarah maxwell, thank you for joining us. >> thank you so much for having me. what's behind the surge in showing how this group is impacted more than any other? >> yeah. and so we actually found that exposure to household food, insecurity and family is of mexican and central american descent and living in san francisco was
2:15 pm
associated with nearly a 4 times increased of massell, which is the new name for a fatty liver disease in middle childhood show that this and this relationship has been found in adults that this is one of the studies to find missing children. >> so sorry it was able to show how food insecurity leads to fatty liver disease. how how do those 2 things relate to each other? >> yes, so we found an association with people with children who wear expensive food insecurity of for years of age and fatty liver disease. we don't understand mechanism at this time. and that's actually one area a few that further research that we're currently we're working on. but children and who households with food insecurity may have less access to sufficient quality and quantity of healthy and nutritious food. so people may be eating more. children may be eating more sugary drinks or more processed food or fast
2:16 pm
food, potentially and food insecurity may change higher body. actually stories 5 and manages glucose, which is one of the mean roles of the liver. and adam. and it might also alter how the microbiome works with the liver and the got. so we think there's a lot of potential mechanisms that, again, are areas future research work on in the future. and what is fatty liver disease? what are the consequences of it? it may be as a child and even as the child grows up into adulthood. >> that's really good question. so adding that there are actually it was just be named metabolic dysfunction associated it had equipment to the east. and this means baton in the liver and a shot at kerr says can actually turn inflammation scar tissue. and if it turns into scar tissue, it can turn around. can actually lead to end stage, liver disease. so basically a
2:17 pm
fatty liver. old is going to be soon in the next they predict 5 or 10 years. the leading indication for liver transplants in adults. and so it's really important to try to identify risk factors now so that hopefully we can intervene unfold, run before this progresses to a stage, whereas young adults, they might be needing liver transplants and since this is one of the first studies done on. >> children trying show these connections. i found it interesting that the study was saying that it also that highlighted the importance of public health food programs like school lunch, that that could be a way that this group that's experiencing food insecurity could get some food that's nutritious and then try to prevent this disease from happening later on in life. >> exactly. so we think it's really important for the medical system and especially for pediatricians to team up with organizations that help provide access to healthy nutritious food for families at risk. and so actually some
2:18 pm
of the future work we're doing is actually piloting fruit and vegetable voucher programs for families with food, insecurity, and fatty and trying again try to promote. but pediatricians and schools to try improve access to adequate quantity and quality of healthy nutritious food because sadly is just too many children, especially minority children, do not have access access to healthy and nutritious then it seems children, especially those who might be overweight of mexican and central american origins that that then this food insecurity could read, increase their risk for fatty researchers are recommending that screening should just be happening sooner. >> now we're starting to kids, a fatty liver and even either. this is a scar tissue in their liver earlier and earlier ages. so they are starting to change the guidelines now. but
2:19 pm
we think that just based on what seeing is that even especially for those higher risk in there, then send genetic mutations associated with i'm answering, think groups. so those mexican central american origins there, if you know and mutations that increase risk celebs. it's the on so the risk of not just if you have this, gene, you know, get this disease that what in addition to the gene can increase press corps and then if we find that increases risk, what can we then do to try to mitigate this additional rest? and so this is one potential avenue. so for people where we know at higher risk for development of mass called, it's potentially we also know that they have food insecurity. can we try to reduce food insecurity and then potentially could reduce that risk for you.
2:20 pm
>> here's what it looks like outside right now on this sunny day, as we're waiting for some more clouds and rain, the role in kyle, it's going to time that all out for us. this going right now. are we waiting? i let's not let's get too into as happily awaiting. i know. i know. but it is a beautiful day out there today and certainly can see some folks out at half. moon bay are enjoying that sunshine. we're going to that mix of sun and clouds, particularly more clouds as we get into our evening tonight, an indication >> of that change in pattern and then we're going rain and wind tomorrow right through saturday into the first part of sunday and some serious snow on the way. so a lot going on. let's talk future cast challis. this is this evening. you can see a few clouds rolling in, but it really isn't until tomorrow that things get going and taking 2 to about 11:00am. so i do think we get in tomorrow in our morning commute. okay. but by the time we get about 11:00am, we start to see the showers rolling through the north bay in the afternoon. they make their way through the bay area so that the evening commute, it's going to
2:21 pm
tough one because we're going to have some wind out there. some rain, some wet roads. you get the idea as we get into our saturday, we'll see more of this roll in and some of these could be thunderstorm cells. so you can see where we start to see some of these reds and oranges popping up. that is saturday up friday and saturday but have a slight risk of those thunderstorms that could pop up as well. so this is saturday night and in particular, you see a really big line really through on saturday night. so just make sure you're aware this if you've got plans and this will start to wrap up early sunday, but the first person they could have a little bit of a a kind of a little delay until we get some clear weather. and so we're looking at from a half inch to an inch for most areas. but if you get into those spots, one of those thunderstorm cells pops up. we could get higher totals there. we could even get tiny hail from things like that. so the other component to this is wind. and as i take you into tomorrow, you can really see it's going to start off as a bit of a southerly flow in this front goes through. will then turn to a westerly flow goes through friday and saturday. so here's your saturday afternoon. you can see some of those gusts
2:22 pm
upwards of, you know, 2025 miles per hour. so what that means is now is the time to secure the trash can folks because, you know, you can get these things blowing in these gusts up to 25 miles per hour. it's enough to send something that is not full or, you know, just sitting there flying of the other thing you're going to notice is temperatures are really going to roll down as we get to saturday looking at highs just in the 50's across the bay area and notice next week. we still have a couple chances of showers there. so we've got a little bit of an interesting run. after all the warm beginning to spring. back to you. thank you. a san francisco supervisor is proposing to bring a full service grocery store to the tenderloin. >> supervisor dean preston calling on city departments for any potential sites for a store. according to preston, the closest full service grocery store for most tenderloin residents. it's about a half mile away. ongoing problems for teenager, shoplifting of loitering now have a bay area. top cop reaching out to safeway executives. so best of all, police chief ronald nelson
