they were out of service for about an hour. you can take a look at some video that i took a little bit early on and you can see that the bart trains are indeed running again. it was around 10 o'clock this morning. a pg e spokesperson tells kron 4 news at branch fell on a line near berkeley by the caldecott tunnel that snapped power for about 2000 plus customers. and one of those customers barred foreign service was impacted. they called in a bus bridge to help out. a bart spokesperson says that only one bus was needed because the problem was fixed so quickly, i spoke with the pga pg e spokesperson about the down line. >> it made contact because of those high that's why when we do experience high we will from time to time branches or vegetation, comedown into our lives. we can even see things like debris peoples, furniture or trampolines, things of that sort. so certainly when we are

experiencing a significant storm, that's something we really want people pay attention to and make sure that they brought things indoors. in this case. we you know, this was we did experience winds in this case. you know, this is not a significant storm all the same, on time. as of right now, reporting live and i'm theresa stasi. back to thanks for the update. >> and in palo alto, a tree leaning on power lines, knocked out electricity for nearly 900 customers between embarcadero. and i'm roads.

crews are out there right now trying to safely remove the branches and restore service kron four's. gay e ong is out there right now. gathering more details. we'll check back with her later. and now let's check in with meteorologist kyla grogan to talk about all that wind. where's that? the windiest right now? yeah. well, i mean, it's windiest up at the peaks, but i just have to say seeing trees down at all that that's exactly what we expected today with a few power outages. and that's what we have to look out for. so you can see we are. >> you know, plenty of wind. and the really interesting thing here is we talked about this yesterday, how we'd see look at the stink northerly flow to get that offshore direction going. and that's exactly what we're seeing. so napa right now. 24 miles per hour. same story in oakland, but you see fairfield at 23. 22 in san francisco, we're breezy all around, by the way, the sierra under a high wind warning where they could see gusts upwards of 80 miles per hour. we're looking more and that 45 to 50 miles per hour range, which is plenty and we're expecting those of you and our hills and some of our higher elevations to be in this until the good part of tomorrow morning. now for the rest of us, it should start to

get a little bit less in the valleys. having said that, this is napa as an example. you can see we go through the evening. we stay pretty windy. and then tomorrow we just see another little pop of that wind before finally pulls back completely. and i do think the north bay will be the last ones to see the peaks kind of relent on this. so you might notice my camera here was bouncing around a little bit. but you take a live look outside right now. other than whats going up. the wind is national. gorgeous day out there. we are warming up. you can see we've got 69 degrees. we just hit in santa rosa. 68 in san jose. some really nice 60's out there. and in fact, we're you know, bunch warmer than we were this time yesterday. this is the difference in temperatures, half moon bay, you know, 9 degrees warmer. so that's part of the warm up when you get that offshore wind that starts to blow as it brings that drier, warmer air mass our way clear skies tonight. but that gusty wind will continue. that means we have relatively warm temperatures in the overnight areas. i'll be back in just a little bit. we'll talk about more about when this wraps up and take a look at our 7 day forecast. >> thank you. are now following some breaking news out of the east bay. were 7

people have been taken to the hospital. contra costa fire responding to a multi car crash that involves a bus. this is on laurel road just near the highway for off-ramp. officials say this happened just after 12, 30 this afternoon and 7 people again taken to the hospital here. we don't know their conditions. we're following up on the story and we'll bring you new updates as soon as they come into our newsroom. >> a shelter-in-place at san jose high school has now been lifted. piedmont hills high school was under. >> a shelter-in-place order. earlier today, police had to search for a suspect who they believed was on that campus. here's video now from the citizens app showing people outside of a fence at the school. according to the san jose police department. the suspect was trying to get away from officers and possibly got onto the school property after jumping several fences, officers cleared the campus before lifting the lockdown. no one was hurt. this. this, though, the second shelter-in-place issued for a san jose high school in the past 2 days. another united

airlines flight forced to make an emergency landing. that happened this morning at san francisco international airport. so this time it was because of hydraulic leaking that caused smoke to billow out of the landing gear. according to the airline, this is routine and often occurs when that fluid comes in contact with breaks. a united spokesperson telling us here on kron 4 that plane landed safely. the plane was an airbus, a 3.20, with 150 passengers and 5 crew members on board. no one was hurt. all the 150 passengers and crew members, we understand are okay. this though, happening just one week after a united plane lost a tire during takeoff from sfo. and new video now of what caused a united flight bound for san francisco to turn back towards sydney, australia video showing hi thus fluid there spewing from the right landing gear as it took off from sydney on monday. 183 people

on board this flight. the boeing 7.77 had to dump fuel before returning. it landed safely. witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from the landing gear after touching down and this coming after another boeing emergency landing. this time a plane took off from dallas fort worth. this was yesterday afternoon when the pilot reported a possible mechanical problem. the plane was diverted to lax and touched down safely. the details of this reported issue remain unclear. no one was hurt. this is though the 6th incident involving a boeing plane in the last week and it's coming as the ntsb is claiming boeing is complicating its ability to gather key information into the alaska airlines door plug investigation. the department of justice also launched a criminal investigation into boeing earlier this week. now to san mateo county, where the highway patrol is investigating a hit and run accident. that hurt a cyclist. neighbors are concerned that

cyclists are not being able to be kept safe in the county and that they're saying the county need to make some improvements to keep cyclists from getting hurt over and over again. kron 4 charles clifford is live for county make some improvements here at this intersection. >> according to the california highway patrol around 04:45pm on thursday, march 7th, a bicyclist was struck in a hit and run crash here at the intersection of police wrote and ascension drive the cyclist a woman was transported the hospital with what her friends have described as a back injury. the driver of the car fled the scene. the highway patrol is now attempting to identify the driver. they also say the

vehicle was either gray or silver minivan that may have damage on the front right corner as a result of the crash. we're trying to find the driver on thursday morning. friends of the victim concerned neighbors and cyclists spoke to the media hoping to get the word out about what happened. we hope that our investigation as members of the bike community. joining with the highway patrol will lead to a good conclusion here because so often there is not a good conclusion. they have also expressed concern that this intersection may need to be redesigned in order to improve safety. part of the problem with this intersection is that cars come down the street at a high rate of speed. >> and given the gentle nature of this curve, it basically encourages drivers to go quickly not to stop at the intersection and basically take this as quick as a highway. on-ramp without stopping, according to friends of the victim. she is now california highway patrol. but

for now in san mateo county, charles clifford kron, 4 charles, thank you. >> a person has died after being hit by a vehicle on highway 2.80, in daly city. it happened earlier this morning near the jon daly boulevard. on-ramp. the victim was walking on the highway when they were hit. no details have been released about the pedestrian or the driver. 3 northbound lanes were blocked because of this fatal crash. but those lanes have since been reopened. former san francisco state employee who was in charge of investigating discrimination claims on campus is now suing the university because she says the school did not do enough to prevent harassment. heather burr less worked as a title 9 administrator for the university. she claims when she was hired. she was given more than 400 undocumented cases and learned the prior to

official in the u.s. in a speech on the senate floor, schumer said israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his government are endangering the state of israel by refusing to protect civilians in gaza and by rejecting any peace plan that create the palestinian state, which is pushing support for israel worldwide to historic lows. schumer says israeli should elect a new leader once the war winds down netanyahu coalition no longer fits the needs of israel after october 7th, the senators justin sparked immediate backlash from republicans. it is grotesque also on the senate floor, senate republican leader mitch mcconnell said schumer's remarks undermine israel's democracy and threaten its alliance with the u.s.. israel is not a colony of america leaders serve at the pleasure. >> of the party in power in washington miles away at an annual retreat in west virginia. house republicans, including speaker mike johnson

piled on it. it's just plain wrong. >> for an american leader to play such a divisive role in israeli politics. i believe that he should apologize. president biden has aired his own frustrations over netanyahu's leadership of the war. but the state department distance itself from schumer's coleman fees are these are statements made by senator schumer not by by the ministry in washington, raquel martin. >> prosecutors are considering delaying the start of former president donald trump's new york hush money criminal trial. this delay would give the former president's lawyers time to review evidence only recently turned over. trump faces more than 30 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments made to adult film star stormy daniels during his 20 16 presidential bid. jury selection in the trial scheduled to begin march. 25th trump's lawyers are seeking a 90 day delay or dismissal of the charges against trump. and trump was back in a florida

courtroom today. a federal judge is hearing arguments on whether to dismiss the case against the former president for allegedly mishandling classified documents by taking them to mar-a-lago. here's video now of trump showing up to federal court in port st. lucie. that's the county there that this happened this morning. the judge is a trump appointee. she may decide to drop the criminal charges against him. prosecutors say trump illegally held onto those classified materials after he left office. several the documents in question contained national defense information. trump has pleaded not guilty in this case. his defense team has argued the president is protected from prosecution. in this instance by the presidential records act, the classified documents case is just one of 4 criminal cases against trump ahead of the general election. former treasury secretary steve mnuchin says he's putting together a group investors who could buy tiktok this announcement coming just one day after the u.s. house of

representatives overwhelmingly approved a measure to ban the popular video sharing app if its china-based owner does not sell its a stake in the company. lawmakers fear tiktok will pose a national security risk if china's government gains access to this data and all of the american users on the app, all their information. so he says that the app should be owned by a u.s. business and he claims there's no way that the chinese would ever let a u.s. company own something like this in china. now to the east bay, the oakland unafied school district is facing a general fund deficit they say is 14 million dollars more than what they thought it was going to be. the district says higher costs and a decline in enrollment were both factors in what has resulted in a 35.4 million dollar deficit adding that one-time grants like the covid response fund are about to expire, which could

possibly add to the deficit. number, according to the district's schools have not yet returned to pre-pandemic enrollment levels. so as a result usd. has had to make some tough decisions and say more maybe looming on the horizon. the acclaimed west oakland barbecue spot horn bbq is nlosing one of its locations for good in an instagram post today, owner matt horn announced it would not be reopening its mandela parkway location following a series of setbacks, including this fire that gutted the restaurant's interior last year. the fire coming just days after they posted about it being defaced with graffiti so matt horne told us here kron 4, he's not throwing in the towel completely. he's still committed to relaunching horn bbq. just not in this location on mandela parkway. does have a bunch of really good restaurants to, but it's a shame to see that go. it's really windy out there today. can't really tell from this shot is kind in the camera. might. shake a little bit

there for us. but kyle us here now. so we can take a little tour around the was. yeah, i mean, the thing is if you didn't go outside and you just looked out the window, you see sunshine and blue skies. and that is certainly what we see as we take a live look here across the bay. it's just wall-to-wall, sunshine, everybody. >> beautiful out there. but of course we do that sticking point of the wind temperature wise. we're warming up. check out hayward here, flirting with 70 degree c are sitting at 69 same story in santa rosa. napa. you're not far behind their. it's 68. same story in san jose. so, you know, we're warming up that has to do the offshore wind to it drives that dry, warm air towards us. and you certainly see that with that offshore flow that happening. but it's also just very blustery out there. lots of wind. and these are the sustained winds. you can imagine the gusts are much higher than that, especially up at some of our peaks. so we have offshore northerly wind. that's what's happening. we've got gusts. 45 to 50 miles per hour possible, particularly up in elevation. this is going to stick with us through friday morning. so it is going to be little bit better for some of our valleys tonight. but still

the chance of some minor power outages. it certainly tree limbs down something to keep an eye on as we roll through. i say the next about 18 hours. so just to show you how this plays out here, let's go through tonight and you can see this wind is still kicking. it is still offshore. and as we get into the late night hours, same story here, north bay really starting to ramp up and then get the overnight hours. it stays very, very, very high, especially when we first wake up tomorrow morning. so many of the similar problems we have this morning where it's white caps on the water this morning in the bay and saw some of those ferries out a little bit of a tough ride there. but as we get later into the day, you see starts to kind of backed out back off in the east bay and down the peninsula. and then finally in the north bay, as we head to the afternoon and then the evening will be done with it. now, the reason this happens is, you know, that clockwise circulation around high pressure, low pressure is the counter clockwise between then we get that offshore wind driven. now when we start to loosen that gradient, this will stop the happening, right? so that's going to be as we get into our friday. wanted to mention it is pi day on the big map geek myself.

law firm is hosting a town hall meeting to discuss the recent flaring and chemical releases at the martinez refinery. >> the firm has been helping residents harmed by chemicals. the goal is to shed light on the ongoing situation. discuss the implications of the toxic releases and outlined the collective steps forward. the meeting will take place at 6 tonight at the martinez event center in the south bay highway 9 between sanborn road and redwood gulch. that's right. near saratoga has now reopened earlier this month. the highway closed due to debris from an unstable hillside washing onto the highway. that's what they're what the damage look like. crews did work really hard to clear all the debris off the highway and they reopened it last night. officials in charge of california's high-speed rail it's going to take another 100 billion dollars to complete the la to san francisco route. the ceo brian kelly told state lawmakers the project has about 28 billion dollars on

pretty shot there. alcatraz callous here, nasa queen talk about what's going on and happy pi day. happy pi day to you to everyone. it is the mathematical constant. you can't get enough of 3.14. is the day today. and that's why pi day began. but i have some fun facts about pi day. first, let's talk about whether we've got the wind out there. it's going to be with us throughout the night tonight here in san francisco, even though we're not technically under the wind advisory, still going to be very, very blustery, but warm and really nice and clear. i want to give you a few fun facts about pi day. you can share with friends act like, you know, all the trivia, the the first pi day. it was founded here in san francisco, the exploratorium in 1988 believe it or not, it's the same day as albert einstein's birthday and it was designated by unesco in 2019 as the international day of my favorite subject school mathematics. so there you go. and this is a live look at the exploratorium where you can see we've got some blue skies out there right now. everyone out and about making their way around. but very mindful of the fact that we've got wind out there and certainly feel it. san francisco is actually

a little bit less than it was about an hour ago. we're up to 30 miles per hour now at 22. but needless to say, these are the sustained winds. the gusts are even higher that are out there. and this is going to be with us for the next i'd say about 18 hours until we get to about noontime tomorrow. so the other effect of this is that it's helping to drive temperatures up. and as we take a live look from the east bay here, we can talk about berkeley where tomorrow they're looking out for low 70's. a gorgeous weekend ahead. and then another low 70's day. when we get into monday. so the clear skies are out there. but the wind is also going to be with us in the problem here is that gradient between high and low pressure. so when it finally starts to release, that's when we'll see this kind of ramp down. but in the meantime, lots of sunshine. just make sure you're being careful of some of that wind. if you're out and about the bay area today. back to you. thank you. investigators need your help finding a man who robbed a postal carrier of their keys. this happened in oakland. it was all caught on video here. kron four's dan thorn has the latest.

>> screams coming after a letter carrier was robbed at gunpoint in oakland, video from the u.s. postal inspection service shows the crime happening in the afternoon. a bark sackett. it's one of many letter carrier related crimes in the bay area over the last year. at this point across the country. i think all bears are going to work every day wondering if this the day they're going to get robbed u.s. postal inspector matt norfleet says the recent number of threats and attacks on mail carriers has gone up dramatically. >> according to data obtained by the associated press, u.s. postal carrier, robberies climbed above 640 in 2023. more than 60 of those resulted in injury. was something that was >> almost unheard of few years ago before the pandemic. now it's a constant threat. a letter carriers not just here in the bay area, but everywhere across the country in response to the crimes,

lawmakers in congress have put forth the bipartisan protect our letter carriers act. >> the legislation would accelerate the replacement of mailbox keys with digital locks, boost prosecutions and review sentencing guidelines. norfleet says people should keep an eye out for their neighborhood mail carrier and always report anything suspicious. also for those looking to commit these crimes, norfleet has a message that this is not a crime smart committee. it's needlessly violent and it's making letter carriers here just going out delivering people their mail, which they need. usps is offering $150,000 reward for this man's arrest and conviction in oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> police in oakland are warning about a spike in smash-and-grab robberies. they say several recent victims were sitting in their cars when the thieves walked up smashed the passenger window and then grab some of the items that were just sitting in the passenger seat. police say they will have additional officers in parts of the city

where there have been a surge in robberies, robberies have increased 32% compared to the same time last year. san francisco now being sued over issues in the tenderloin again. and this time it's not homeless advocate subjecting to the clearing of encampments as kron four's. dan kerman tells us now residents and business owners say the city is not doing enough to clean up the area. >> residents and hotels in san francisco's tenderloin of sued san francisco saying they're using the tenderloin as a containment zone for illegal drug use, causing harm to those living. there. >> the city continues to treat the table and that's the area where it herds, drug activity where hers, people who are addicted to drugs. and where it is, decided that people in the throes of addiction, can live in that area on the streets. attorney matthew davis represents the phoenix hotel. >> the best western hotel and 5 residents who live in the tenderloin, their neighborhood, their public spaces, their sidewalks. so

literally i'm safe and sanitary impassable. you know, the conditions are just horrific. city has known about this for years. >> in a statement the city says, while we understand and share the frustration of tenderloin businesses and residents, the city is making progress in reducing crime, disrupting open air drug markets and addressing homelessness all while complying with the preliminary injunction issued in the coalition on homelessness case, the city attorney's office is maintained that injunction has tied their hands to enforce certain laws. but attorneys disagree. in the meantime, another tenderloin resident you see law school has filed a motion against the city to force the city to follow a previous ruling about encampments. primary goal is that the city has to make a call. >> efforts to reduce criminally reduce the number of encampments on the sidewalks in public spaces in the 10 win to 0. that's what we want. the motions aren't seeking money. just action and

they could be heard as early as next month. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> a rideshare driver is now facing hate crime charges after allegedly punching a rider in the face. according to the indictment, the driver was called to sfo to pick up the victim when the driver asked the victim if he was jewish or israeli. and then eventually punch that person in the face. the driver now faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. a san jose theater company is trying to recover now after thieves struck just a week before opening night as kron four's. sara stinson tells us this is not the first time the theater has been broken into. >> we spoke with the production manager here at city lights, theater company. he says they've been broken into multiple times since he started working here over a decade ago, costing hundreds of dollars each time. the latest happening on sunday security footage shows 2 people walking up to city

lights, theater company in san jose sunday morning. >> just before the alarm goes off, it's very frustrating. it's a it's a violation run. guess pernetti is a production manager at the nonprofit theater company on south second street. he says police responded quickly but not before thieves took off with items. they took props from the some iphones and ipads are props in the show. >> they took some personal belongings that actors had left in our dressing rooms. it hurts because we have to replace that stuff. gas pernetti says the theater has experienced far too many burglaries over the years. i've worked here for 12 years. >> i would say a good 6, 7 times we've been broken into it's time it's a significant amount of money to do repairs to the damage caused by a by a forced entry. all the while the theater's preparing for opening night of the play. king. liz, starting next week, the theater company puts on 6 shows a year in the 100 seat

are speculating because of the bay area ties. kennedy will be announcing aaron rodgers says his running mate rodgers played college football at uc berkeley. not that far away from oakland. and this week kennedy's campaign confirmed that rogers and former professional wrestler and former minnesota governor jesse ventura are at the top of his list for vice president. and today, rodgers is responding to the allegations that he told people that he believed that the 2012 sandy hook shooting was not real. so rodgers posted on social media this morning, quote, as i'm on the record saying in the past what happened in sandy hook was an absolute tragedy. i am not and have never been of the opinion that the events did not take place again. i hope that we learn from this and other tragedies, tragedies to identify the signs that will allow us to prevent unnecessary loss of life. my thoughts and prayers continue to remain with the families affected along with the entire sandy hook community. more

than 12 million americans receive health care coverage under both medicare and medicaid. the lawmakers right now are saying to federal health programs are not better than one. washington correspondent jessi turnure reports. democrats and republicans are working together to try and find that sweet spot between providing quality care and controlling federal spending. millions of americans covered by both medicare and medicaid are still not getting the care they need. is the federal government stuck on stupid? this group gave a resounding yes. >> after it found the patients known as dual eligible cost taxpayers nearly twice as much as an average medicare patient. but their health outcomes are far worse. so on average, a dual eligible will die 15 years earlier. >> then a a non to eligible patients don't eligible czar largely low income and disabled. louisiana republican senator bill cassidy says these patients are frequently

gust atlas peak about 39 miles per hour. but, you know, check out ridgecrest up the north bay. 44 miles per hour, even in the oakland hills are over 40 miles per hour gusts. so that's why we're seeing some, you know, limited. but still some power outages that have happened around the bay area today. so these are some the peaks right now. atlas peak. you can see that 27 miles per hour and was bring it down here about just had lost. roberts has dropped out on me idea of to do. but they've been gusting. and you can see the oakland hills about 31 miles per hour. sometimes when the wind gets going, those sensors don't like to hang out with us and they drop out. but, you know, come down to the sustained winds that are down at the surface. i mean, look at this. 24 miles per hour in oakland. obviously, we are well up there today. so it's because of this dance between high and low pressure, creating that pressure gradient, driving that wind offshore. and once those kind of back off, then they relent and then we'll start to calm down. meanwhile, blue skies, warming temperatures, all part and parcel of this wind, which is driving offshore, kind of warm, dry air towards us. have we go into tonight? we stay

windy. same story we into the overnight hours. let's take you tomorrow morning. 7.15, tomorrow morning. so, you know, we're still in it and frankly, take a look at this. you start to see the east bay catch a little bit of a break as we get towards 3 o'clock. but the north bay up in elevation. i think it's going take a minute before this really calms down for you for tomorrow. so the blue skies are out there. the temperatures are on our side. we're going continue this warm-up as we get into tomorrow. this is a spectacular looking 7 day forecast here as we go into this weekend with all the parades and things are going to be happening. some great weather for that. and we begin next week saying hello to spring with some really spring-like temperatures. well, the future was supposed to have flying cars and a 32 hour work week end. they're still no sign of those flying cars. but the u.s. senate held a hearing today about the need. >> for a 32 hour work week with no loss in pay. washington correspondent basil john reports on whether or not this could actually become a reality. >> the hearing only lasted an hour and a half, but some

senators said their priority was just to bring attention to an issue that hasn't seen action in congress in decades. vermont senator bernie sanders said it's time to cut down the number of hours. americans are allowed to work weekly. in fact, the last climb as we understand that the senate held a hearing. >> on this subject was in the 1955. with advancements in technology. sanders said a 32 hour work week should be the norm with many working americans now more productive than ever despite an explosion. as we all know and technology in a massive increase in worker productivity. nothing has changed despite his push, republicans like indiana senator mike braun. if you're a federal mandate, would crush small businesses. some not worried about big corporations. they generally are going to land on their feet anyway. but what about main street in small business? this doesn't work for small business. and louisiana senator bill cassidy said many small businesses don't rely on
