>> news station. this is home. news 11. >> and it's it's just a slap in the face somebody comes in and breaks into your building and take stuff that doesn't belong to them. >> feel violated. now at 11 staff of the san jose theater company are trying to recover after a weekend burglary all while they're preparing for an opening night. coming up next week. good evening. thanks for being with us tonight on kron 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow unfortunately this wasn't the first time the theater has been broken into kron 4. sarah stinson reports. >> we spoke with the production manager here at city lights, theater company. he says they've been broken into multiple times since he started working here over a decade ago, costing hundreds of dollars each time. the latest happening on sunday security footage shows 2 people walking up to city

lights, theater company in san jose sunday morning. >> just before the alarm goes off, it's very frustrating. it's a it's a violation run. guess pernetti is a production manager at the nonprofit theater company on south second street. he says police responded quickly but not before thieves took off with items. they took props from the some iphones and ipads are props in the show. >> they took some personal belongings the actors had left in our dressing rooms. it hurts because we have to replace that stuff. gas pernetti says the treater has experienced far too many burglaries over the years. i've worked here for 12 years. >> i would say a good 6, 7 times we've been broken into it's time it's a significant amount of money to do repairs to the damage caused by a by a forced entry. all the while the theater's preparing for opening night of the play. king. liz, starting next week, the theater company puts on 6 shows a year in the 100 seat

venue. but every break in becomes a setback for theater. still recovering from the pandemic was 4 years ago today, actually that we were shut down >> when the started and we're still trying to recover from that. and you know just trying to stay above water with that. and then that something like this happen where needless waste of money, it hurts gas. panetta says the show must go on. in fact, they have that show comingrup on march. 21st there still replacing items before that. the best way you can support them, they say is to come to one of their shows here. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in san jose. back to you. >> thank you, sarah. now to a terrifying experience for a woman in alamo. she was robbed at gunpoint right in front of her home. the robbery was about 2.30, yesterday afternoon at the woman's home on biltmore drive. deputies say she was getting out of her car when 2 crooks with guns

rolled up and stole her things. police broadcast of the suspects vehicle description, 2 other law enforcement agencies that led to a brief chase down highway 24 from lafayette towards oakland. but the suspects got away. >> san mateo police arrested a man who they say trespassed onto a school campus this morning carrying a large kitchen knife. police say they got a call just before 10:00am from san mateo high school officers are told when campus security asked that man to leave the suspect, got physical with them. suspect also ignored commands, lied about his name and resisted arrest. the man is in san mateo county jail on multiple charges. >> police in redwood city of arrested a 17 year-old high school student after police say he brought a gun to campus. investigators say this gun was found on the teenager's waistband area after he tried to run away from police at the school yesterday. police tell us they also found ammunition at his home in east palo alto. the

teen has been booked on multiple felony charges. >> and over at willow, glen high school in san jose, students at a shelter in place this afternoon following reports of the student bringing a weapon to campus. according to police, the student was found with a bb gun. no one was hurt. >> now to another big story we're following tonight. protesters took over san francisco international airport this morning calling for a cease-fire in gaza. they lined up blocking gates with a giant banner that read stopped the world for gaza. there were speakers using megaphones leading chance. other people playing the drums went on for hours, starting at about 8.30, this morning and they didn't disperse still around noon travelers at the airport were certainly caught off guard. it's hard to find a place around here is to kind relax and >> and not inundated with all the chaos. >> was pretty that it gave me really bad anxiety >> hey, we're you're gonna miss your flight. no arrests were made. but airport

security and san francisco police officers were on site the entire time monitoring the situation. now, keep in mind, sfo is a public space, a public building. so it is legal to demonstrate at the airport. >> this is something we've certainly seen before and really our goal as a public facility is to be able to provide for free speech activity yet ensure the safety and security of not only our passengers, but also our employees and the protesters as well. and this is something where we do drill that we practice it. we kind of go through the actions that we would take in an incident like the one that we saw today. >> doug yakel there says the airport received no reports of delays says they instructed passengers to enter the airport away from the protesters. >> as a foe could see even more protests tomorrow. this time hundreds of security screeners at the airport say they've filed a complaint with the department of labor claiming their employer covenant aviation is withholding a pay raise. that was mandated by the tsa last

year. workers claim covenant aviation is refusing to pay the new rate. they plan to hold a rally tomorrow afternoon. thousands of city employees in san francisco are calling on the city to fix what they call an urgent staffing crisis. >> employees represented by several labor unions gathered tonight at an event called strike school. union representatives say the purpose of the gathering is to make sure members know their rights and to prepare for a possible strike unless the city acts. they say the city's negligence has resulted in more than 2700 vacant positions >> me myself. took 600 calendar days actually get hired and promoted their to civil service process. and so the city needs to fix to hide process. they need to staff up and they need to stop sending money. 2 outside contracts and

hour and the highest peaks. so you want to secure those items and maybe even prepare for some isolated power outages make sure everything is charged up just in case, of course, for your morning commute. if you have a high risk vehicle, just be careful that so 06:00am your wake-up forecast will be clear and windy in the 40's low 50's there and then we'll be all warming up to the 60's. a low 60's for the noon hour and then upper 60's as we get into the afternoon. and when i come back, we'll time out all those wind speeds for you in the extended forecast. back to you. >> thank you, gayle. the carifornia supreme court will hear arguments from berkeley residents over the conversion of people's park. the historic landmark is set to be turned into more student housing. the park is now owned by uc berkeley and was listed on the national register of historic places. but in recent years it's been called dangerous when used by the unhoused despite the park's crime filled reputation back in january, protesters against the housing plans rallied at

the site in an attempt to stop construction since then, officials have blocked off access to the park using shipping containers. uc berkeley says they plan to house more than 1000 students on the site. but construction is being held up in the supreme court state supreme court justices are set to hear arguments in los angeles next month. >> kron four's your local election headquarters and it is still tech-ically too close to call when it comes to california's prop one measure. but the people who oppose it say it is likely to pass the proposition backed by governor newsom would raise more than 6 billion dollars in tax money for homeless and mental health services. the latest tally shows prop one is leading by about 4200 votes with an estimated 85% of the ballots counted. in a statement, the group californians against prop one said, quote, we almost took down the bear, but it looks like we will fall short. >> meantime, republican steve

>> u.s. postal inspectors need your help finding a man who they say robbed a letter carrier video shows this masked man armed with a gun ripping the keys away from the carrier in oakland. earlier this month. postal inspectors say these types of crimes continue to be a problem. >> but they're trying to crack down four's dan thorn reports. >> screams coming after a letter carrier was robbed at gunpoint in oakland, video from the u.s. postal inspection service shows the crime happening in the afternoon. a bark sackett. it's one of many letter carrier related crimes in the

bay area over the last year. at this point across the country. i think all bears are going to work every day wondering if this the day they're going to get robbed u.s. postal inspector matt norfleet says the recent number of threats and attacks on mail carriers has gone up dramatically. >> according to data obtained by the associated press, u.s. postal carrier robberies climbed above 640 in 2023. more than 60 of those resulted in injury. was something that was >> almost unheard of a few years ago before the pandemic. now it's a constant threat. a letter carriers not just here in the bay area, but everywhere across the country in response to the crimes, lawmakers in congress have put forth the bipartisan protect our letter carriers act. >> the legislation would accelerate the replacement of mailbox keys with digital locks, boost prosecutions and review sentencing guidelines. norfleet says people should keep an eye out for their neighborhood mail carrier and always report anything

suspicious. also for those looking to commit these crimes, norfleet has a message that this is not a crime, smart committee. it's needlessly violent and it's making letter carriers here are just going out delivering people their mail, which they need. usps is offering $150,000 reward for this man's arrest and conviction oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> a san lorenzo homeowner says he's lucky to be alive after trying to stop people from stealing his car. the again attempted car theft happened early monday morning. joey hawker says when he confronted the suspects, they immediately started shooting at him. hawker ended up slipping on his front door steps which may have saved his life as the front of the home is now whittled with bullet holes. hawker believes one of the weapons fired was an ak. 47, the bullets not only hit his walls and cars, but they also came close to his wife and 2 daughters. >> here's the bullet holes. >> right where i was standing.
