the tolls. 19 minutes areas is back to you. thank you. reyna on the vta is seeing an increase in copper thefts from their train tracks. yeah. this week, the santa clara county sheriff's office arrested 2 people suspected of stealing copper. >> we have investigators now working to track down others after 2 dozen copper thefts at the transit system have been seen so far this year around 4, sarah stinson has a look. >> the 2 people arrested are accused of stealing $10,000 worth of copper from the tracks of eta. on monday, a train operator actually witnessed the theft. thieves are targeting the valley transportation authority in the south bay, stealing copper from the tracks. the santa clara county sheriff's office says it is investigating 2 dozen copper theft cases causing a total of half a million dollars in damage to railway property that some people risking their lives and they during the public for about $10, a pound, the latest copper theft happening in

broad daylight monday, a train operator witness this happening near the tracks on the vta cropley light rail station in san jose. >> a person was seen with a white pickup truck less than an hour later, deputies were told the same truck was spotted at the vta station in sunnyvale. you were able to detain the suspects. >> and which resulted in fighting actually that copper wire was stolen from that vta station. 60 year-old daniel mail and 55 year-old frank pacheco. bulls got arrested for suspicion of having stolen property, conspiracy and possession of meth. >> the ongoing copper thefts not only disrupt vta operations, but also put trains in danger copper being absent. >> we're no longer able to track train movement. we are not able to provide a signal protection for our trades. >> and we are not able to get you activate. gave our protection. that intersection said it's not known yet if the 2 people arrested are

responsible for any of the other thefts. the sheriff's office is working with vta to track down any more thieves involved for anyone out in the if they even do see anything suspicious of anyone looking like they have a water hose or anything like that near vta definitely call it in to us that we can go out there and investigate it. >> we spoke with someone who works at a metal scrapyard business to learn about how they ensure the copper they are buying is not stolen. he told us they don't take copper from just anyone. they take many precautions, including taking a picture of the person, their car and their id. the worker also says the sheriff's office stopped by their shop, telling them to be on the lookout for copper thieves. i'm sara stinson reporting the newsroom. back to you. >> all right. thank you, sarah. 604 is the time and another big story this morning. oakland business owners say they are sick of crime and now they're threatening not to pay their taxes. if the city doesn't fix the problem a little more than 200 businesses signed up for this strike so far, one of them has been running multiple shops in the city over the

past. 35 years. >> it should be just a. it's out of control as far as it hits, business owners are feeling they feel the pressure that they are not being protected. but the city of oakland and they paid so much taxes. i mean, there's taxes. i mean, uk will get even there count on the taxes that we pay per year. and plus, we losing all the insurance coverage. >> well, as of now, we don't know if and when this tax boycott will happen. but we're following the story. meanwhile, mayor sheng thao says that oakland is making progress with crime. she sent a statement saying in part, quote, since the summer of 2023, oakland's business districts have experienced a reduction in most property crimes. we have more peace office police officers in my first year as mayor than we've had the last 2 and a half years. we restored foot patrols and motorcycle traffic units conducted focused operations with specialized units and expanded safety. ambassador programs.

>> it's confusing. it's people don't know where to turn. >> karin janssen talking. there she is. the lawyer along with what's going on with bars that are suing the double in federal prison. in hopes of turning the tide at that prison. fbi agents raided the dublin facility. again. they took multiple boxes of potential evidence. >> all we know is that the fbi, they did the facility took i believe they also may have taken computers. and we also know that the same time almost the entire executive staff was let go or removed, no longer working. there. and that includes individuals who in january testified about how they were making positive changes.

>> in a statement to kron 4, a bureau of prisons spokesperson said, quote, a team a new team was charged with developing a plan for the future. all of the facility back in 2021, the fbi also raided the facility and that lead to warden ray garcia of being charged and then convicted of multiple counts of abuse for ordering incarcerated women to pose naked 7. others were also found guilty of abuse. the judge overseeing the criminal and civil actions called a special hearing on friday. she hands and says they're asking for an outside moderator to be appointed. >> its 607, and a second man has been arrested for a fatal shooting. that happened last month in san jose. gerald williams. >> was arrested last friday. police say he was involved in the shooting that happened february 29th in a parking lot on more park avenue where a person was found shot and dead

in a car. it's san jose's 9th homicide this year, the motive is still under investigation. >> an all-clear in martinez this morning following a hazmat situation. fire official shut down several streets yesterday after a tanker started leaking some sort of fluid. officials say that tanker was one of 3 that were found abandoned last friday. 2 of the attackers had already been towed. authorities tested samples from inside that leaking tanker and ruled that the flu. it was not hazardous. it's still not clear exactly what was inside the tankers or why they were abandoned. happening tonight, san francisco city employees will attend a strike school so they're calling it as they prepare for a possible strike. employees. unions are calling on the city to fix what they say is an urgent staffing crisis. the workers say they're currently 3700 vacant positions in the city. the strikes school takes place at 05:30am tonight. there's no word on when a potential strike that could take place.

time now 608. and another developing story that we're following. san mateo county supervisors are now taking a stand. >> against a tnt ending landline service to thousands of people. yeah, they're asking the county's district attorney's office to draft an ordinance against this proposal. kron four's will tran following the story for us live in redwood city will be have a landline anymore. pho everybody can relate to this. we've been to areas where we've had spotty cell service are no cell service at all for us. it's not that bad because we can leave that area. but if you live in rule communities throughout california and this story specifically talks about san mateo county. well, they don't have cell phone service

or is so spotty that it can be downright dangerous, which is why the supervisors, they are telling a tnt know keep the land lines because in an emergency, those people say, for example, office skyline, they can call down to local officials and ask what's going on. and just importantly, they could do reverse 9-1-1. calls using the land lines to tell those people that they are in danger at the very least stay in their house for shelter in place, landlines. well, they seem like typewriters for most people, but in those areas, it is so important and you might be wondering why they're going after a tnt in many parts of california. a tnt is the only provider. so that's why ny

coming up on 6.14 and here are 4 things to know. a man was arrested after the battle. e say he pepper sprayed someone who wainto celebrate ramadan. all happened at the islamic center of north marin. the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and officer in vallejo is recovering from injuries. they received one a retail theft suspect rammed into his car. it happened near gateway plaza. neither suffered life-threatening injuries. pg e customers will

francisco, all of its looking nice and clear drive from the sierra to the bay. and that's the way we're going to stay not been getting in our way, except for maybe the remnants of that low pressure. and it's because it kind of sits in place just to our east. it actually result in a forecast that we oftentimes see during the fall, which is dry, offshore winds kicking up some dry, breezy conditions across the bay area. so where is we won't see any sort of marine layer fog. we are going to be seeing winds from the north and east pushing up into the afternoon today starting to increase towards the tail end of the day to 30, 40 miles per hour. and then 40 to 50 miles per hour gusts as we move into your thursday tomorrow. the one catch to the next couple days in this forecast, we will come down by the weekend, though, as for today, temperatures in the upper 50's to low 60's millbrae are right at 60 degrees today. foster city down through mountain view each at 64 while the south bay looking at temperatures in the mid 60's, san jose at 66 today, temperatures in the east bay

also mid-sixties with oakland or right at 66 degrees. warmer spots being vallejo and benicia at 67 while santa rosa at 66 a look ahead. temperatures will remain pretty steady today and tomorrow. but after that, it's the 70's all the way through this forecast. look at this. the finish of winter is going out with a really nice not last few days of the season. lots of sunshine and highs. very comfortable rain. all right, john, thank you for that. well, off to that start this morning. here's a look at the bay area as a whole. >> you can see how a former starting to pick up just a little bit 8.80, as you're traveling to hayward for the most part, smooth sailing they bridge right now just under 16 minutes traveling into the city, the meter lights are on. so that slowing you down. not seen any accidents on our bridges. richmond center fell bridge or the golden gate, 30 min around 80 to 101 heading across towards peninsula. 1, 0, 1, 85 up to menlo park. about 30 minutes to 80 82 year. also looking good traveling along i-80 starting to pick up gradually as you're

the last presidential primary back in 2020 saw a 47% turnout in our state. one analyst said that they expect a very high voter turnout this november for the election. >> the house of representatives is moving forward now with a bill that could ban tiktok if it doesn't cut ties with its chinese parent come. that's right. washington correspondent anna wiernicki joins us live from washington with the very latest on all of this. >> good morning. well, group of bipartisan lawmakers are bringing this bill to the >> house floor for a vote today. they say it's a matter of national security >> the fate of tiktok in the u.s. is in the hands of congress algorithm site. >> it's dangerous for young people. and we've got to find a way to rain again. on wednesday. the house is set to vote on a bill that would require the chinese company

peterson was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and their unborn son. connor. >> jennifer mcgraw reports now on what happened in that hearing in san mateo county. >> good morning, mister peterson. can you both see and hear the proceedings are? thank all right. scott peterson is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him 2 decades ago. the now 51 year-old had been having an affair with his mistress with his wife, laci peterson, who was 8 months pregnant with their unborn son. >> disappeared back in 2002, the family lived in modesto at the time. attorneys with innocence project, an organization that aims to exonerate the wrongly convicted agree to re examine the case. they asked the san mateo county superior court judge to approve new dna testing. we spent a lot of time trying to. >> sets out what frankly are very alarming deficiencies in the discovery that was provided to the defense of the time trial. >> they also asked us tennis last district attorney's office to provide them with

evidence that they say should have been turned over during peterson's trial years ago, that then investigators argue that peterson dumped lacey's body during a fishing trip in the san francisco bay. a burn ban with a bloodied mattress in the back could contain dna evidence. peterson's family has maintained his innocence for years and believes the bad may have been used in a burglary. there's a theory that she may have been killed in the van because she witnessed that burglary. they're asking the judge to allow them to reopen the investigation. >> show them the documents from burnt-out van that was located less than a mile from the peterson home. >> that contained mattress that they say had blood stains in it. they want that mattress retested. the defense was entitled to those at the time of trial. >> mister peterson has been waiting 20 years to find some of police reports and audio recordings and video recordings that should have

been provided. >> with the san francisco department of public health has released an update now regarding overdose deaths in the city. 64 people died of drug overdoses last month. that's down slightly from 67 deaths in january. the department says this slight decrease may be in part. due helping people kick their addictions by offering them money. fentanyl continues to be the leading cause of overdose deaths. but doctor hilary, nuns from the san francisco department of public health hopes to change that. >> stabilize their lives. we expect that we will see some positive health outcomes, even though addiction is a chronic illness. recovery is possible. there is a way out of addiction and into a healthier life. >> well, the department of health says it's focusing most of its resources towards

communities with higher rates of overdose, such as unhoused people and those who have had a prior overdose. >> time now 6.33 and state senator scott wiener is pushing a bill to limit the use of inaccurate drug test by law if past, he says this could prevent people being wrongfully convicted. kron four's michael thomas with the very latest. >> hi, good morning, everyone. senator scott wiener says the passing of this bill will make law enforcement across california used more accurate drug testing, adding that right now every year colorimetric drug testing causes about 4100 people statewide to be wrongfully arrested and charged. now if senate bill 9, 1, 2, in the state senate public safety committee just passed with a vote from 4 to one requiring law enforcement to use more accurate and objective drug testing, essentially stopping agencies from making arrests or filing charges on the basis of these color based drug tests, which are also known as colorimetric drug testing. and

right now some areas still use these tests to assess whether a substance contains illegal drugs. but officials say many agencies across the state have already abandoned these tests due to them being inaccurate. the bill does not ban the use of these tests completely, but it does prevent officers and prosecutors from using them as the basis of arresting or charging decisions, at least without verifying the results with a more accurate tests. now, the senator says a recent study done by the university of pennsylvania showed that nationwide colorimetric drug testing leads to about 30,000 wrongful convictions every single year. and here in california, that number is around. 4100 now. the bill did pass through the state senate public safety committee and will now head towards the state senate appropriations committee. that's the very latest here in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas will send it back to you live in the studio. thank you, michael. 6.35.

>> a man who shot an unarmed college student 2 years ago has been convicted of assault with a deadly weapon. mark waters confronted the student with a gun in front of his san jose airbnb rental in october of 2022, the victim ran away but water shot him in the leg of the victim was treated for injuries and survive. walters testified the gun went off accidentally but he was convicted now faces 22 years in prison 6.35. other news, james. yeah, police department officer now is recovering after a theft suspect rammed into his car. you can see the photo here. >> the crash happened last week after the officer responded to a retail theft call out of the gateway plaza. police department says both the officer and the suspect had to go to the hospital. neither suffered life-threatening injuries. the suspect was later arrested after receiving a medical clearance. in the north bay. a man has been arrested after police say he pepper sprayed someone who is preparing to celebrate ramadan. all happened at the islamic center of north marin in the battle

on monday, the victim told police the suspect has been identified as 48 year-old david marc, alicia, markedly ish carried a bag into the center and showed what looked like a gun. the victim says they tried to grab the man and keep him away from the bag and that led to a struggle and then he pepper sprayed them. the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police say they never did find a gun and there isn't enough evidence to treat this as a hate crime yet. >> it's 6.36. and as you know, pg e customers already seeing high bills and ready. see a couple more dollars now knocked off your bill. so this might be exciting for you to get a little bit of a break. the california climate credit goes into effect next month. households with an act of electric account are going to get a credit to 55 bucks. and if you have a gas account, you'll get a credit of $85. that credit is from the california cap and trade

national equal pay day. and california first partner, jennifer siebel newsom is bringing attention to the gender pay gap as she continues to spearhead efforts to close that disparity. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace has the story. well, in my hand here as one dollar, according to new data from the california civil rights department statewide. for every dollar, a man earns a woman earns just $0.81. it's a pay gap. california first partner, jennifer siebel newsom says is unacceptable and now she hopes new action. >> will lead to change. >> we need to get with the times california first partner, jennifer siebel newsom sending a strong message on this national equal pay day arguing we're not where we should be in 2024. women are still not paid equally to their white male counterparts. parts and continue to lose billions annually to the wage gap. williams, the fact she says well, on average women in california earned $0.81 for every dollar. a man earns she points to new data from the california department of civil rights showing the pay gap is
