6.30, convicted killer scott peterson appeared before a judge today on the peninsula. the la innocence project has taken an interest in peterson's case and is requesting permission to review evidence from the decades-old investigation. kron 4 charles clifford has the details. >> well, earlier this year, the la innocence project announced it was going to take another look at the scott peterson case. they say there could be new witness testimony and new evidence that might be able to set peterson free today, the mateo county courtroom attorneys for the innocence project presented their case in what could be the first of many hearings as their investigation continues inside a mateo county courtroom tuesday morning, scott peterson appeared via video conference. lawyers with the la innocence project. attorneys from the stanislaus county district attorney's office and members of the peterson family were also in the room in 2004 peterson was convicted of murdering his wife laci and their unborn son. connor in modesto, back in 2002 at the original trial, peterson was sentenced to death, but that was later changed to life in prison is

currently serving out his sentence at mule creek state prison east of sacramento. peterson has maintained his innocence since lacey's disappearance earlier this year, the innocence project submitted multiple court filings requesting access to the large amount of evidence that was gathered during the original investigation in its court filings, the innocence project suggested that someone other than peterson may have been responsible for laci's death. they also took issue with how the original case was handled and say that intense media attention during the investigation may have influenced the case among the items they're seeking to examine is any evidence related to a burned out van. it was found near the peterson home around the time of lisa's disappearance. they also want new dna testing done on blood found inside that van in court on tuesday, the judge scheduled 3 additional hearings to discuss the different aspects of the innocence project requests. scott peterson only spoke briefly to say that he prefers attending these hearings via video conference rather than in person in redwood city. charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> earlier today we spoke with

defense attorney michael cardoza who previously worked on the scott peterson case to get his take on the innocence project looking into it. >> back to the innocent project took this case speaks volumes. they don't many of the cases that are present so in my mind, i wonder what you guys know that we don't know about this case that you've already discovered, but you're not telling us what the attorneys that they have and how smart those people are and the money they have to vet this case to investigate it. i'm really excited for them to go through all of the evidence in the case. and finally, at the end of it, we can put to rest number one, whether it gets a new trial or whether that's the end of because this is the end of the road where scott peterson, unless they come up with some have new evidence. >> our coverage does continue

the fbi, they did the facility took i believe they also may have taken computers. >> and we also know that the same time almost the entire executive staff was let go or removed, no longer working. there. and that includes individuals who in january testified about how they were making positive changes. in a statement to kron 4 news, a bureau of prisons spokesperson said, quote, a new team has been charged with developing a plan for the future of the facility and quote. >> back in 2021, the fbi also raided the facility and that lead to warden ray garcia seen here being charged and convicted with multiple counts of abuse for ordering incarcerated women to pose naked 7 others were found guilty of abuse. my farm brought the case back in the

90's against dublin, which at that time. >> had placed a women in the mail facility and sold access to and again, here we are. you know, 30 years later and we're still seeing abuse and harassment them out of that facility. jansen says that the judge overseeing both the criminal and civil actions in this case has called a special hearing on friday. jansen says that they are asking for an outside moderator referred to as a special master to be appointed. who can come in here and figure out what's going on and most importantly, figure out how to solve it. to recess. stasio kron. 4 news. >> the governor's office just announced that the chp has conducted a number of sting operations leading to 168 arrests and 360 stolen cars being recovered in the east bay. the highway patrol also says it's recovered. 16 guns linked to crimes since a surgeon chp officers began last month. there are currently 72 chp officers assigned to oakland. the governor's office says those

officers will continue to have an expanded and visible role with a focus on deterring and responding to crime. >> new protections for renters are on hold and conquer that after the city clerk received a petition that could put the issue on the november ballot, the new ordinance had already been approved by the city council and was set to take effect next month. those changes would have capped annual rent increases at 3% for certain rental units built before 1995. but it also added additional eviction protections for renters opponents argued the cap on rent increases was too low and now have about a month to gather a little more than 7,000 signatures from concord voters. if opponents can do that, the measure will either need to be repealed by the city council or placed on the november ballot where voters will get the final say on the matter. >> in the north bay, a police chase ended in a car crash as police pursued some thieves accused of robbing a santa rosa dick's sporting goods store. the picture you're

bay, a beautiful place. 31 degrees 30 the incline village. 45 getting chilly in reno, too? alright, overall here, the percentages. how about this? the northern sierra nevada, 117% of normal for snowfall. the central sierra, 100 of one percent of normal and 94% of normal in the southern sierra nevada. we're looking good now. we're going to take a break from these storms here. so these totals you go down just a bit. but overall, well, it's been a great time this year, especially from where we've come from. but yeah, as we look forward if you want to head up the high country, here's the best news. you have that fresh powder on top of all the pattern we've had from recent storms. and here you go. now the roadways are going to be opening clear wednesday, thursday and friday. look fantastic. looking at highs generally hovering in the 40's, maybe start to feel a little bit like spring as we head in towards saturday and sunday. if you plan on sticking around through the weekend to. but right now we're going to stay dry for the foreseeable future in the high country. the roadways are open and there's all that powder to ski on. get up there

and enjoy. it will be a lot of fun. guys, back to you. thanks, lawrence. >> turnout for last week's primary was low. and california latest numbers from the secretary of state's office puts turnout at around 34%. that's not a record low for a presidential primary, but it's pretty close. the lowest is one. 31% of registered california voters weighed in back in 2012 when president barack obama cruised into a re-election the last presidential primary back in 2020 sot 47% turnout in the state. one analyst we heard from is anticipating a very high turnout this november. powerball jackpot continues to climb after no tickets matched all of the winning numbers that were drawn. last night's jackpot is now estimated at. >> 559 million dollars. that's a cash prize of 273 million dollars. and the mega millions jackpot also again, inching closer to that billion dollar mark. the prize now stands at

rein in house. republicans are ready to vote on their bill that would require the chinese company bytedance to sell their app within 6 months or face a been in the united states. our bill is not an act of censorship is a safeguard for our citizens. many republicans and democrats share concerns that china could force bytedance to hand over data on the millions of americans who use tiktok the overwhelming issue here is. >> do we protect our national security? law makers say the goal isn't to ban tiktok but the protect americans and their data. what we're after is a separation from tiktok from its parent company bytedance by extension the ccp. we want tiktok to exist. we're not there to we want to make it something that not a fearful social media platform, but one that is very positive. the bill is scheduled to be voted on tomorrow where it is expected to pass. then it would head to the senate reporting in washington. i'm basil, john. after 6 months aboard the international space

>> after steph curry missed the last 2 warriors games, his ankle injury was re-evaluated today. time to check in on how he's progressing and when he can return to the court for this upcoming playoff push little bit of mixed results. death has been ruled out for tomorrow's game with the mavericks. not a huge surprise. however, he is making good progress and has been cleared to resume on-court workout. so he'll travel with the team to la at the warriors saturday matchup with the lakers. he will be re-evaluated again following friday's practice. i spoke to candy ours, john dickinson today. he talked about the importance of getting stuff that for that lakers game and the upcoming stretch run. >> and again, the good news is is it builds trending toward i know he's going practicing in la before they play the lakers on saturday is going to practice their on friday. so i think there's some optimism that that he'll be able to make his return for that one. >> and really, i think it's it's these head-to-head games against dallas and the lakers.

we're starting to have some pretty impressive totals. in fact, for the year, many spots well above the average so far, of course, looks like going to quiet down a little bit. there's a good chance we're going to be above normal across much of the bay area's we end the season. nonetheless, we've got some quiting weather around the bay area. not a bad place to be some partly cloudy skies overall long range forecast. high pressure starts building in. we start to see more of a northerly wind kicking in. that's generally a dry wind and also that offshore wind blowing in. that's going to warm up the temperatures that air sinks. it approaches the ocean. tends to warm things up. a lot of 70's going to be popping up in the coming days and staying dry right on into the weekend. yeah. looks like saint patrick's day looking like a beautiful day. even the first day of spring looking good. lots of sunshine, maybe couple patches of fog moving along the coastline. then things begin to change as we head toward the end of next week. so overnight tonight will be chilly in spots about 38 degrees said chilly in santa rosa. 41 a little more about 44 becoming mostly clear, but cool in the jose. and 51 degrees in oakland.
