bridge. 37 to the tolls. 20 minutes. all right. let's talk about this. a big story we're following recent shootings involving security guards in san francisco are now sparking up a conversation. but the role of private security plays in the se, some protesters and activists say private security guards have no place in the city while some shop owners see them as really the only option to keep their businesses protected. well, there's a statement you sat down with the guard. he shares his perspective on things. >> about what it's like to be a security guard in san francisco. >> you get stat you ligety get right and you would be attacked just for asking them to that bad. it's really bad. >> 51 year-old gutierrez has worked in the retail loss prevention industry, often for the past 10 years. he says interacting with shoplifters in the city has always been fraught with risk. but he says

it's become even more dangerous in recent years. i'm not talking about your. >> normal individual have nothing about chips. are soda. >> these should people come in with backpacks, the full bags, garbage bags. this is what they're after fielding those up. it seemed go shopping. if there's these people are they would do whatever it takes to get what they need. loss prevention employees have been on both sides of a pair of recent deadly shootings here in the bay area. >> last month guard blake mohs was shot to death by an alleged shoplifter at home depot in pleasanton. that was followed by walgreens armed security guard michael killing unarmed alleged shoplifter banko brown and san francisco. >> i warned people that i warned elected officials. we did start doing something. we are going to see more violence happening. >> the president and ceo of the california retailers

association, rachel michelin places the blame for the escalation of violence. shoplifting incident squarely on the shoulders of california. lawmakers for rejecting a bill aimed at increasing the penalty for repeat shoplifters from the misdemeanor crime to a felony. >> people are brazen because they know they can go into a store. they can steal under $950 and there will not be a consequence for the behavior. these local jurisdictions in the state legislature, particularly some of public safety committee, continue to not want to work with us on making changes to make the retail environment safer. you're just going to see more and more stores leaving. i will be calling for legislation. one san francisco lawmaker is pursuing a different action to make the retail environment safer in the wake of the brown shooting. >> limiting the use of guns by security guards. we amend a local law and send a very clear message to security guards that, know, you don't draw your over over

charged with murdering cash app founder bob lee is back behind bars. the judge actually denied his bill thursday, citing the seriousness of the charges against him. many pleaded guilty to. i know many pleaded not guilty to the murder of lee. also in court thursday, prosecutors revealed that the knife allegedly used to kill lee had many and lee's dna on it. and that it matched the brand of knives found in the home of many sister. many could be back in court on june. 2nd. san jose is no longer in the top 10 largest cities in the u.s. according to new census data, thousands of people have picked up and moved on out crawford's justin campbell reports on why so many people are leaving now. the mayor is now responding this. >> mayor mahan, not happy to hear this news saying that people leaving the city for 2 reasons, housing and the quality of life. i think it's

wake-up call. the whole region is seeing is losing residents. according to new 2022 census data. roughly 50,000 people have left the city since before the pandemic. why they're leaving. it's it's the challenges that i'm focused on its high cost of living. it's more of life issues, >> homelessness, >> the largest city in the bay area used to be the 10th largest in the country with just under 1 million residents. it's now at number 12 behind austin, texas, in jacksonville, florida. the sun belt has been growing. >> i'm austin is a city that yes has gotten more expensive lately but has built a lot of homes. same goes for florida. florida has been one of the leading homebuilders among states in the last several years. jeff tucker, a senior economist with zillow, says more homes need to be built in san jose to help ease housing prices. a lot of those young families don't really see a future of settling down being able to 4 to stay put in san

jose itself. frankly, even folks working in the tech industry are struggling to afford it there. tucker says the census data goes hand-in-hand with zillow data. he says 2 thirds of people from san jose searching for homes and zillow are looking to buy elsewhere. that actually is a is a pretty high level of kind of interest looking outward from metro from a major metro area. >> mayor mahan says residents have also lost faith in local government to correct the problems that we're having here in the city. and he says we have to get back to the basics. you heard him say it before that cleaning up the city and solving homelessness to turn the city around and move in the right direction. reporting here in san jose, justin campbell kron. 4 news. >> the treasure island, they actually have a new affordable housing near the building is on created street and it includes more than 100 studio and 2 bedroom apartment units. city officials say the apartments will be used for homeless veterans and their

bill made it through today and still have a ways to go first. they need to approve the both the chambers and if they make it that far, eventually they're going to need the governor's signature just like the other bill. well, there's a controversy in southern california. la pride is pulling out of the dodgers pride night next month after a drag group with ties to the bay area. uninvited from that celebration, the los angeles chapter of the sisters of perpetual indulgence. they were removed from the lineup amid pressure from the catholic groups. the group describes itself as and trans nuns. nonprofit has been around since 1979. do community service ministry promoting human rights group set to be honored with a community hero award until receiving objections by several religious groups accusing the group of mocking christianity. >> we're not a catholic. we have catholic sisters who are members of our organization. we have hindus. we have jewish sisters. we have a sea of
