work. businesses are closing a little bit earlier than usual. right now. the co-op is closing at 8 instead of 10 o'clock. this is in light of the recent stabbings, 3 of them, 2 of which have been deadly. >> this is the davis that i know. and it's like, no, it's not the davison. a bay knows 3 stabbings in a weekend davis to deadly. it's a realaty. bismarck hazy says people are not used to. >> davis is one of those places that people come to because it is so safe and because they do have the ability to be out in the community without that any level of concern. but now there is some concern. >> central park normally known for its midweek and saturday, farmers markets. has become ground 0 for one of the killings. officials say happened last thursday. you definitely have fell over the past few days that that that mood has changed. the davis farmers market was canceled wednesday afternoon while other community staples have

reporting for us tonight. on the peninsula. officials gathered in redwood city to pay their respects to officers who have died protecting the public this morning. law enforcement from across san mateo county honor the 27 men and women who have fallen in the line of duty across the county dating way back to 18. 88 the names of each officer was read out loud and a rose was placed in front of a memorial display. the foster city police chief promising people their their loved one's sacrifices will never be forgotten. >> family members present. we cannot imagine your pain. know that you are never alone. as we extend our hand to walk you through the years be. >> the last officer to die in the line of duty in san mateo county was officer richard may with the east palo alto police department back in 2006.

unveiled its a newly acquired car today. it is not one people will ride, but bart says it will make for a better right before while. but live in our newsroom. she has the latest there. just seen vicki and grant part says that this new car will make for a smoother ride and also improve the system's reliability, a ribbon cutting ceremony happened today for this new rail inspection vehicle or riv. >> the vehicle has highly advanced track inspection capabilities that uses lasers sensors, cameras, measuring systems and data to scan the tracks. and it works pretty fast. it can travel about 70 miles an hour. the looks for potential issues on the tracks in both normal and low light conditions, including inside tunnels. >> this is all about on-time performance. so the systems and the data that this vehicle is going to collect this, going to help us predict it's going to help us respond and it's going to help us.

there right now. even some thunderstorms popping up looking toward sfo. you've got some rain out there on the tarmac and well, the planes continue to come and go as they loke. no delays reported at sfo. oakland or san jose. but that rain certainly causing an issue out on the roads, very slick out there and have seen some fender benders out there on the way to work totals over the last 48 hours. this is impressive. more than an inch of rain in canfield about mill valley. 1.1 0 in downtown san francisco. this is incredible. an inch of rain in may that as a whole lot of rain sanon, some will just slightly under an inch. napa over three-quarters of an inch less amounts of rain for the south of the san jose. but you get the idea rain out there and temperatures as you might expect, much cooler than normal for this time of year. guys, back to you. all right. thank you. lord says california faces a massive teacher shortage. a state lawmaker has introduced a bill calling for public school educators and staff to receive

a major salary increase. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace gives us a look at the legislation. well, the lawmaker who authored this bill says a statewide teacher salary increase is long overdue. and even as the state faces a potential multi-billion dollar budget deficit. >> he's confident the salary goals he laid out can be paid for it's a job often described as underappreciated and underpaid. the job of a teacher can just go right here to overtime. but torrance assemblymember al she says a new bill he's authored seeks to change that. we need to make sure that teachers school staff can afford to live in the communities that they work. and specifically his legislation calls for the state to increase pay for public school teachers and school staff members. >> by 50% come 2030, school districts will be required to play a large role and report to the state about progress made in achieving the pay increase goal. we back our teachers. we want to support teachers and we want to put our money where our mouth

teachers, they make such a huge difference in the lives of our children. they made a big difference in my life and your life and >> you know, we want to make sure that we continue to attract the best and the brightest who want to become teachers that he says is especially significant in this state where as of the 2021 2022 school year, there were at least 10,000 teacher vacancies he says of pay, does not increase the number of vacancies will only get worse. we know >> recent polls show that more than two-thirds of of a college students say that pay is the number one reason why they're not interested in becoming educators becoming teachers. we need to close the wage cap so that tracking, you know, good people to want to become teachers want to be in the classroom to face this workforce crisis head on. the bill has no formal opposition and even pass the assembly education committee with bipartisan support. but it all comes as the state prepares for a possible projected budget deficit worth at least 22.5 billion dollars. are you confident this can be funded?

yes, we've done this before. he points out for now. his legislation merely sets funding targets for the next 7 years that he argues will give the state time to come up with a plan to determine how we will pay for his proposal. the end goal to provide the best education we can for every child. and we reached out to the governor to ask how he feels about this proposal, especially as the state faces a potential multi-billion dollar budget deficit. >> but his office says he does not comment on pending legislation reporting at the state capitol. wallace kron. 4 news. >> coming up, the fda has approved the first vaccine to present prevent rsv details on when the shots could be available. and the oakland zoo saying bye-bye to some of their beloved animals. the

oakland zoo is saying goodbye to several of its beloved animals. one of the zoo's most popular residents, donna of the african elephant is soon going to be headed. >> to a sanctuary in tennessee, don. his best buddy, lisa, another african elephant passed away in march, making donna the only female elephant at the zoo. so officials say that it's important that donna enter her late stages of life surrounded by other female elephant since they're deeply social, much more than the male elephants and they create lifelong close bonds with each other. donna will make the move to tennessee sometime later next month or in early june.

>> all the best to donna and 2 mountain lions at the oakland zoo that were rescued as cubs in santa cruz county will arrive at there new forever home this week. hazel and holly became inseparable when they were rehabilitated for months at the oakland zoo. holly was just a tiny cub when. someone who lives down in santa cruz county found her underneath their deck last december. and at 4 months old, hazel was found abandoned in socal in january. 12 pounds. both cubs did not have enough time with their mothers to learn survival skills so they will remain in captivity. hazel and holly will be taken to big bear alpine zoo in southern california tomorrow. >> still ahead, 7 bodies found on the property of a convicted offender in oklahoma. after the break, we're going to hear the break, we're going to hear from the victims. fa

>> she was too good to have this happened. there were parts shattered. the parents of ivy webster living their worst nightmare. their 14 year-old girl's life taken. she went missing with 15 year-old brittany brewer on sunday. but tragically, the 2 girls were found dead along with 5 other bodies on a property in henrietta monday afternoon. and he said she's gone. >> they're all gone. and i'm like, you're joking. i was like, know, they're they're gone. the families of the girls say they were at a sleepover at the home of 39 year old. jesse mcfadden, a registered offender with a rape conviction, identifying the other bodies found as mcfadden's his wife. holly. guess in his 3 kids mcfadden's mother-in-law jan mayo devastated at the tragic loss of her daughter and 3 grandchildren. she loved her children. she would do anything in the world for

with all the heat we had last week might delay the woret fire season a bit, lawrence. but i think people got a taste of summer last weekend. kind of miss the sunshine. a saying enough is enough, right? would like to get back into some. >> a nice spring, typical weather. but this is where we sit right now. it is back the some wintry weather in the cold temperatures, of course, 70 in place. but these numbers are good. 15 degrees below the average for this time of year. and of course, that rain popping up around the bay area. and that's where we sit right now. more showers showing up right now, some water on the lens they're looking toward downtown san francisco in the transamerica. building out of this we've got more rain there, too, and kind of scattered out there. that's what's going to be in tonight. even a chance of more isolated thunderstorms tomorrow. they will just call a partly cloudy with just a slight chance of some showers. still wrapping around that area of low pressure. but we're not done there just yet have had to extend some of the chance of some rain drops and the weekend. and then the next week, too, with a couple other storms. all right. here we go. we can see that low kind of spin around. you see a point up all that moisture wrapping

right back in the bay area about the middle. the afternoon. we had a lightning strike near san francisco. now more downpours out there right now. it's scattered about the bay area, but there are certain spots special on the peninsula right here. this is where we're looking at some heavy amounts of rain in toward half moon bay summit wrapping its way up in the pacific and headed toward parts of the peninsula in san mateo in east palo out too, as well. so we're far from done with this storm system. it's slowly going to work its way towards southern california for tomorrow. some that moisture wrapping around again, possibly moving back into the bay area, bringing with a slight chance of a few more showers beyond that looks like things are going to little bit on the active side. we're not double that just yet as yet. another weak system going to approach the bay area's. we get into thursday and friday and here comes another cold front coming in there. it is getting a little bit closer. bring a chance of rain totals for the next 24 hours. not going to be huge, although it's been impressive already some places over an inch of rain. maybe we had a few more hundreds, but here's the long-range forecast is where it gets interesting. we're going to see this a wraparound showers. that next

system coming in as we get into friday. then behind that another weak system coming in, possibly bring some scattered showers in the north bay on saturday. then we get into monday. another chance of rain. and guess what, some more on tuesday now that looks pretty bullish right now. see how this all transpired. and these looks very strong. but what it does tell me is things are not settled yet. we've got a long way to go. we're not seeing that big dome of high pressure building in where we can say all the rain season is done right. that doors open for more showers in the next week. cooler than normal. the good news is late next week. i am seeing a big dome of high pressure. temperatures moving back in the 70's. all right. right on the mike >> your help? tonight, big breakthrough to protect older adults from a dangerous respiratory virus. think fda approving the first vaccine for r s v it was developed by the pharmaceutical giant glaxosmithkline. well, now the cdc must, you know, decided everybody 60 and older should

be inoculated or just those at risk of contracting rsv. the health care agency is going to decide that question next month. in any case, the first shots would be administered beginning this fall. >> what we want to do is keep you out of the hospital and it looks to be about 80% effective in being able to prevent severe lower respiratory in infection. >> the fda also considering competitor pfizer's rsv vaccine for older adults. >> a new experimental alzheimer's drug is showing some promise. drugmaker eli lilly says its new drug slowed cognitive decline by 35% in patients with early-stage alzheimer's, the company also study people who are in the later stages of the disease. and when both groups were combined, the drug was only 22% effective. eli lilly also notes the drug has side effects. the most common was brain swelling which occurred

could have been so much worse. really just heart-stopping video of that crash. this is in fairfax county, virginia, right outside d c police dash cam video shows the one car losing control spending across the median before colliding with another vehicle that had been pulled over for speeding. the car clipped an officer's legs as he tried to run away. vicki. yeah, amazingly, he suffered only minor injuries that nobody in either car, though, was hurt. authorities say the 17 year-old driver >> was traveling up pretty fast. as you can see there, about 120 miles an hour when he lost control of the vehicle. he was ticketed for. reckless driving and that wraps up kron 4 news at 5. a buck 20 was reckless, said that lucky it wasn't. >> for more, ken and pam are with us here for a look at what's coming up next on kron.
