darya folsom and we thank you. and we're trying to help you get through this. it is cold. >> and it's pretty dangerous because it is so cold. it's become very slick. it is. yeah. fact. our top story this morning, more snow in the bay set to fall. we've got video to show you here in the top left. you're looking at the scene. that was a visible out the apple yesterday afternoon. top right. the scene overnight in napa county and then on the bottom. you can see what it like in palo alto. >> and in gilroy, a beautiful across the bay area with the snow ice can there. but also, as we said, can be treacherous. so we've got our team coverage this morning in the store. we do. kron four's will tran in los gatos where snow is causing major traffic problems this morning. >> reyna harvey in the traffic center keeping an eye on your morning commute. but first, let's start with you, john. in the weather center. walk us through what you see behind you there who would have thought skiing in palo out. so it's a winter wonderland. it is not a winter wonderland for anyone trying to get to work. this morning, though, a rough go on route such as highway 101 highway 17 as rain will
5:01 am
tell you and then also looking at some rough conditions on i-80, all these areas have been seeing some areas of snowfall on that. and really slick conditions in areas that will you don't often have to deal with that. you're driving into your commute to work. >> now, right now i'm going to focus on one really quick. we do have some sleet in grapple that has accumulated on roads in marine county right there making for some really slick conditions. also quite breezy. now, you transition up into sonoma county. it's mostly rainfall south of santa rosa. but you get north of rosa and that quickly becomes a very icy situation. by the time you reach cloverdale. it's snowfall right along the mendocino county line right there. that has resulted in a lot of cars slipping off the roadway up in the mendocino county and lake county. it is nothing but the snow crossing down into northern napa county. also snowfall up their transition zone gets especially slick right around youngsville down to napa. so do watch for some icy spots. now, if we go over into solano
5:02 am
county, i-80 is also a pretty slick. go this morning valais how it's rain, but it doesn't take long before you cross into an area of snowfall before you even get to fairfield between fairfield and vacaville. also, some snow and then downright icy conditions on 505, as you cross from vacaville up to winters. watch for some really, really slick conditions that direction. also highway. 24, we've had a mix of rain and snow around the tunnel but also around lafayette, walnut creek. it's rain for you, but it doesn't take long before you hit some wintry mix crossing between k. 24 is one of those spots and watching really closely for some slick spots as well. 6.83 some rain snow mix potential for some icy conditions out there. as we've been talking about highway 17, it is not been a fun one. in fact, as rain will update you on closures along that route. it is snow and snow packed up that direction. pretty consistently just rain that we're looking at as we make our way on up the peninsula. just rainfall consistently all the way up to san francisco
5:03 am
and right along the east bay shoreline to very, very wet conditions this morning. and it's snow across the rest of the state up into the sierra nevada. even parts of the central valley and up along the north coast. now we have winter storm warnings at those low elevations. that's as low as 1000 feet in elevation for the north bay and east bay hills in the santa cruz in diablo range is even some winter storm warnings out into the central valley and of course, up into the sierra nevada, 2 freezing temperatures prompting frost advisories and freeze warnings through 09:00am this morning. and of course, those temperatures falling into the 30's with freeze warnings. alameda san jose and san mateo among spots falling to 39 pacifica. you're at 38 degrees right now. cloverdale where the snow is falling. you're at 33 really wet and slick conditions there. not as much of a factor. 15 miles per hour. gusts currently just wet out there. but later on today, we will see some sunshine peeking through so improvements later in the day.
5:04 am
but this morning, it is a rough go on the roads and rain. i know you especially have some updates on a few particular spots. yeah. john, what you talked about highway 17 and will trans out there as well. northbound southbound granite creek road to summit road in los connell's because of those conditions. and there was also an accident there. so >> that's going to be close probably for most of the morning. they do not have an estimated time of reopening that there. our other highways this morning. also, we look green across the map still want to slow down because we have high wind slick conditions out there. black ice, 8 minutes traveling into the city right now that san mateo bridge, you can see water being kicked up off the bridge. 12 minutes. our richmond center fell commute about 8 minutes there and that golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls 20 minutes drive slow out there. darya james, i'll send it over to you guys. all right. let's take a little drive on highway 17. more snow there. and falling overnight. the temperatures dropped and that's what happened at all combined. really to affect drivers hitting the roads, especially this morning with kron four's will tran stuck.
5:05 am
>> in the conditions that are up there right now to get some problems for commuters. well. >> commuters in both directions, either you going from santa cruz to san jose or san jose to santa cruz. that is not happening. this is as far as you are going. if you are trying to get to santa cruz. i just drove past los gatos and i was forced off the freeway at bear creek road. and you can see the chp officer while he just i just move forward and he is gone. but you can see, although those caltrans employees and trucks right there, they are diverting traffic. there's that minivan making that turn because they are not letting anybody on highway 17 as reena was talking about. and john, to about the trees, the snow, there's some cars stuck on highway 17. so they're not letting anybody through at this particular time. no estimated time on when it will possibly be reopened. and this is horrible for people,
5:06 am
especially in santa cruz as they try to drive to san jose to go to their jobs or whatever they need. that's the commute direction that should be on the left side of your screen, james and area. but you can clearly see no cars are coming from santa cruz to san jose and no cars and the other direction as well. yes, they're moving, but they're moving off the freeway. and this is bear creek road once again. there are many cars you only if you want to swing the camera over just a little bit. try to show you what's going on. not exactly sure why those trucks are parked right there. they've been there for quite some time, guys. they're hoping that possibly it will be reopened. but you know what? that's just the game of hope because the chp, they're not saying wind. so those trucks and ultimately those drivers probably will also say, forget about this. let me get off the freeway and go back to where i came from. back to you. all right. thanks a lot. well, well, the chp had
5:07 am
to shut down highway 29 in far northern napa county. that's after reports of a string of spinouts and you can see the weather. they were dealing with snow fall heavy at times. >> while the closure stretches from tubs lane near calistoga to bradford road up in lake county will talk more about lake county here in a minute. but there's no word yet on when the roads are going to be reopen. in the meantime, as we get into colder temperatures here in the bay area, the california highway patrol warning barry residents now to be extra careful while out on the roads. and this is the view that visitors got on mount diablo yesterday. look at that. temperatures dropping into the 30's and with these freezing conditions expected to continue. you're going to need to be extra careful while out on the roads. chp officer andrew barclay says that while the snow may be pretty to look at the danger lies on when it starts to melt and create slick road conditions. >> we understand a lot of people, especially for the snow may be may be excited and maybe trying to drive to some of these, you know, higher elevations where the snow is but our our first word of
5:08 am
advice is going to be, you know, please, first of all, watch your speed and slow down. if you know that that the temperatures are lower or or freezing. the you know, cautious of of icy conditions out there. >> well, chp says they're not planning on any different approaches when it comes to their response to the winter weather. but they're going to be monitoring it out the apa visitors tell us that they hope to see more snowfall. it is pretty just remember to be safe. >> is. >> and fun. you know, chairlift, you've got to get yourself up there. but here's a guy skiing in palo alto. let's take another look at how he takes this run yesterday morning. this is near skyline boulevard. lights road snow coming down hard enough to cover the trees, the grass and yes, that is a walkway run that he is skiing down and take a look at this in gilroy,
5:09 am
a viewer taking the shot from there porch. and you can see the snow coming down. pretty steady there in the video. the viewer says they're excited about it and they say cover their roof. and also up on the hill, you can see the background that video too. >> well, we also had another report of a fallen trees. and that's one of the new stories for you this morning. this one came down overnight in san francisco right along the 1300 block of clay street. that's in the hill neighborhood. these pictures sent to us by kron. 4 of you are about 3 o'clock or so this morning. and you can see the tree was on top of a car. fire crews were out there with their chainsaws, working as hard as it could to get that cleared. but just another example of what this weather is bringing us and it continues to bring us power outages to. let's give you a quick update happening right now. the pg e live power outage map shows that we have widespread outages still on the peninsula and along the south. the good news, though, is that that situation in the peninsula, the lower peninsula were following yesterday near redwood city, palo alto, right with the dunbar bridge comes
5:10 am
up against a highway. 101, all that orange is gone. so peachy made some good progress there yesterday. still roughly at last check about 22,000 or so customers without power. and the big problem this morning on a slide up towards clear lake up in lake county. you can see we've got a couple of a red triangles there. as we zoom in, you'll see these areas along the north shore of clearlake anywhere from 5,000 or more customers without power. so that part of the bay area got hammered by this storm system. and that's also where we saw a lot of the snow. so some of this could be heavy limbs packed with snow falling down on the power lines. it's going take pg while to get out there since the damage and make those repairs. are you? >> yeah, there's some residents and the north fair oaks neighborhood and they're going on their 5th day, james, with no power. it's an unincorporated area in san mateo county borders, redwood city, menlo park and atherton and residents there say the power outage started monday and a couple of neighbors.
5:11 am
they've lived in that area for more than 50 years. and they say they've never seen anything like this before. a couple of bucks away from their home in redwood city. power and traffic lights are on. how frustrating is that? the ongoing outage for them is fueling a sense of desperation. i'm isolated. i-phone. >> no phone, no alarm system. no landline, no cell phone, no charging, no heat. it's been really cold in the house warmer outside than it is inside. >> i feel for what it's still cold like this. residents are bundling up the best they can while they don't have any power. and just waiting and hoping for the best or, you know, you drive a couple of blocks. how frustrating is at stake? can i come over join us online at not here on the kron. 4 morning news. if you're away from the tv, you can just grab your cell phone and scan this qr code will take you to the spot on our website that has all the information about the power outages. road closures, trees down, everything that you need
5:12 am
to fall. >> yeah. some of the most active weather in the bay area right now is right up here from the lake over to concord and on up to fairfield that some heavy rainfall crossing the kharkiv is in benicia bridge is then you get up northeast of the late and you've got a mix of rain and snow right there along i-80 and even portions of 6 ad crossing up towards fairfield. even more that getting up towards vacaville. very, very wet out there. take it slow up in solano and portions of contra costa counties as well as the rest of the keeping you updated. and without those slick conditions out there, we're talking about incidents along highway 17 right now. you can't get through it. >> also just factor in a 20 minute systemwide park to lakers. they're going to slow things down because of the

5:31 am
some sleet grapple inhale that has piled up on the roads, making it really slick through there. then you get up into northern sonoma county and you go out past santa rosa. it's a mixture of ice and then snow packed conditions on roads, especially around cloverdale. we've had multiple reports of cars just completely veering off of roads because about very slick. it is even getting stuck in the snow fall up there. mendocino and lake counties is nothing but snow crossing down napa county from there. you've got a very, very rough go ahead of you. even napa itself seeing a bit of a mix of rain, snow and that is making for some icy conditions. 80, though, from the late show up to fairfield inn and up to vacaville. even some accumulating snow on the road around there. heavy, heavy snow falling in these areas right here. then mixing very quickly with very heavy rainfall in these areas that transition zone is right along 80 in 6.80. and that is subject for some ice formation that is going to make these traveling areas very, very rough. same for 505. if you're
5:32 am
heading up this direction. so this whole corridor right here, very, very bad place to be doing a whole lot of driving right now. a little bit further southward. we've also had some rain snow mix along highway 24 crossing from oakland and berkeley on over towards or in the lafayette and eventually walnut creek. things out there slick along highway. 24, i'm definitely imploring you to take it slower in these areas has consistently rainy up and down the peninsula. east bay, a little rain snow mix on the snow grade hasn't been too icy just yet. but i do want you to take it slow there. and then rain is going to keep you really filled in on what we've got going on a highway 17, which is much the same as what i've been telling you. we zoom out across the region. you can see all that consistent snow up in the sierra. you head north of red bluff in the central valley and you're running into it up on i-5 as you get up to redding winter storm warnings in effect for the entire these of lake and mendocino county in remaining elevations above 1000 feet for the bay area. you head into the central valley. there's
5:33 am
also some winter storm warnings there. and of course, as you get up into the sierra nevada frost advisories, freeze warnings through the morning as we do see such cold conditions. it's upper 30's to low 40's. right now, a mix of rain and snow out there and otherwise just cold conditions. just make sure you're bundled up and giving yourself that plenty of extra time as you're getting on to our roadways. now this afternoon, i am talking clearing, which is good news from getting to the rest of your forecast. still ahead, rain john, thank you for that. okay. so let's start with howie. 17 northbound southbound. >> that's close from bear creek road down. a summit road will said it best from san jose down into santa cruz. you cannot get through there. so you might want to have to take 101 or maybe highway 9 eastbound 9 west of pierce road. and sara, tell that you do have a traffic hazard there looks like the westbound side you can get through and want to want an option is going to take you longer. but you can use 17. also up here, milpitas northbound 6.80, north of jacqueline rolling out a traffic hazard there and an accident. so we're slowing down a bit heading into the
5:34 am
city. we have high wind slick conditions, a 19 minute ride. so they just start to slow down because of that 13 minutes, 80 to 101 always factor in a 20 minute bark delay cause of the rain. you know, they're gonna slow down today. 8 minutes the richmond center fell bridge. how about that golden gate bridge? about 19 minutes. john talked about up in the north bay. we've got highway one, 28 eastbound and westbound at 101, close in hillsborough southbound. 29 north of tough slate in calistoga because of the snow up there. definitely seeing those slick conditions. darya. james, back to you. thank you. reyna. let's get out and now highway 17 with snow and rain as the temperatures dropped overnight. this is >> what it looks like. yeah. in fact, conditions got so bad now that they've had to shut down. >> the highway. that's the big news this morning. kron four's will tran on the story for us just outside los gatos will. what's the latest? >> this is as far as you can go. if you're trying to go to santa cruz, we were told to get off the exit on bear creek
5:35 am
road cars are. you can clearly see their caltrans. they're making sure nobody goes. beyond that point. they get off the freeway here and then they drive back towards san jose in a perfect world. both directions would be open, but just a few miles from this location, falling trees and weren't talking redwood trees onto the roadway. there are cars stuck there. snow, sleet, horrible conditions simply too dangerous. and you just can't even go through. even if you said it's my life. let me give it a shot. no, they're not letting anybody go beyond this point. everything turned so quickly and real quickly. we have a live interview with richard lewis and he has been stuck in this for hours. i want to show you look at how bad the situation is. and you can see those cars are stuck right there. those trucks, they're not going anywhere. and many of them. they've been there since around midnight, hoping that maybe it's a
5:36 am
little bit easier for them to sit there and wait as opposed to going around are just driving in circles. here's richard lewis. you live in santa cruz. you work for the government of santa cruz. you are going home at 11 o'clock. you said the window quickly shut. >> yes, i was about 10 minutes up on the highway before i just saw snow. and then the road was frozen. a big rig was spilling out in front when around him before i was stuck in the snow and i've been there for hours and entry started dropping right in front of my truck. and i just would hear trees dropping all around the right in the road. the 4 journalists came and rescued me. >> so the trees are snapping in a few feet here and there in the front of my truck, maybe 20 feet in front of my truck. okay. so obviously it's cold rain here. >> just a few quickly changes to snow. once we started elevating just heard quickly from rain to hail to just snow. you want to believe out fast. this happened. so your truck is still stuck up there. yes, i'm still stuck. i could not get out to try to pull it
5:37 am
out. luckily, i had someone come rescue me. you've been here since 11 o'clock after you were taken here to bear creek? yes, i've been here for hours. luckily. someone came, we use spinning fish tailing. yes, i i'm pretty fortunate. i lost control. luckily, right in front of a turnout was able just to pull off to the side. if not. there's lot of people behind the goddess. we could happen. very good. so what are you going to do now? i mean, you have to go to santa cruz and you coming home at a line 11 looking place to get a hotel in town until i get some figured out, ok, you know, i have a buddy here and he's going to take you to a coffee shop so he can wait it out that i can promise you as far as the situation in a perfect world, i can tell you both directions would be open. you can even go. let's just say that it fell on the direction from san jose to santa cruz, but they're not allowing anybody in the opposite direction. from santa cruz to san jose as well. so it. far as i'm concerned. and as far as caltrans and the chp.
5:38 am
highway 17 is not open. >> ok, what a nightmare for some will. thank you very much, john. yeah, really puts it in perspective there on the ground perspective should be a forewarning to yet to be cautious as you're going outside this morning. >> a couple other spots to note that we are seeing some really slick conditions, 101, in the north bay, anywhere. lake mendocino, northern napa county, even solano county past. allay as you're heading into fairfield, watchful 6 ad and ad right there as it's slick snow-packed and very wet. alright, wet out there. we're also seeing that 20 minute bar delay, slick conditions out there. >> like will mention highway 17. you've got issues slowed down those high wind advisory still in
