take 2 on the recent gun violence that's obviously half moon bay grieving going through a really tough time. we saw the shootings that happened around lunar new year in monterey park. a further south so, you know, first of all, just what are your thoughts around that and what any plans for for the city of sausalito in terms of public safety? yeah, i mean, this is a really difficult conversation for me to talk about. i actually worked for gabby giffords. so i've i've experienced some of the impacts of gun violence, a firsthand having known folks who were there that day. of course, and my heart really goes out to everyone who was impacted by the events in monterey, park and and half moon bay and and i'm frankly, i'm quite frustrated that we haven't done more for ending gun violence in america. i'm really thankful for organizations like giffords who worked really, really hard to take steps to really finally move things forward in sausalito. we have a fantastic police department who do an amazing job every day to keep our community safe. but you know, that's not enough. we we
9:20 am
as a nation really need to step up and do more gun violence. now, anything specific that you're planning for the city of sausalito? well, with regard to gun violence, we we are just working with our police department to make sure that our community is aware of our gun laws and that they feel safe and that they're available to answer any questions. like i said, we have a fantastic police force in sausalito who really give all of their time. so we're making our community aware of how to stay safe. we're hosting. hopefully some, you know, gun violence training's going forward so that folks know what they can do if there is a shooting. but it's just deeply unfortunate and unsettling that this is something that we even have to be continuing to talk about and to continue to do. you know, it's serious also to get a sense of what other challenges are facing the city of sausalito that you'd really like to address this year. among your different priorities. yeah, absolutely. so a big priority for us right now is housing. you know, i think we know that as a state, there's a huge housing crisis in california. we need to provide for the folks who serve our community to be able to live in our community. and
9:21 am
at the same time, we have to balance the state requirements for us for housing. so we need to move saw sleet is a 2 by 2 square miles city. and we've been asked at 724 new units of housing. so we're working really hard because, you know, no one is going to be 100% happy with the choices that we make. but i believe that we can come up with a plan that will help us make a more inclusive community that allows us to welcome more folks into our town also solves our housing challenges. so that's a big one. and then i'm thinking about, you know, basic back to basics. problems were us waterfront city just like any other community might be familiar with. we need to keep our roads working. we need to keep our infrastructure strong. we need to provide good city services and i'd really like us to stake a smart cities back to basics approach. so there's a lot of different thoughts of what does that mean? right, right, right. so the example that i like to give is everybody hates potholes. well, what if we all right, right. bnt what if we can use technology and sensors and our roads? that would tell us how much vehicle miles traveled, how much traffic there was on
9:22 am
those roads so we can prepare them before the pothole happened. and that's just one example. so you can use sensors to have to mount their flooding for sea level rise you can just use technology to better communicate with residents. to me, it just means we live next to the innovation capital of the world here. should we be using technology to better serve our residents good point there. and you know, less quick thing. i want to touch on, too, as you are a swimmer. tell us a bit about a really interesting experience you recently had and how that applies. maybe to your just day-to-day work totally. well, i'm proud member of the south end rowing club here in sausalito, which is where i swim and i actually swam the english channel a few years ago. and for me, it's actually so applicable to my work as mayor because to be able to make it through cold water currents wanting to quit difficulties. unexpected situations. you just got to keep going. you know, and it's the same thing with being mayor serving a community working in politics. you're going to have challenges and it's going to be tough. but you've got to be resilient and push through and i'm ready and
9:23 am
willing to do that. and i'm so honored to be serving as mayor. all right, melissa, so proud of you and going to start this year. appreciate you being here. thank 7. all you being here. thank 7. all right. we'll be right back.
