>> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> solemn moments of remembrance for the elderly. asian man killed 2 years ago in san francisco. his death in raging the nation and igniting a movement. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm dan for and i'm noelle bellow. today marks 2 years since 84 year-old ratanapakdee was killed. >> he was violently shoved to the ground attacked in the middle of the day in san francisco's onto vista amanda hari was at today's vigil where they remembered his life. >> well, the event was held to remember grandpa he's not the only member of the asian community here in san francisco who's fallen victim to violence. >> january 28th marks 2 years since 84 year-old the show raton up was taken from his family, friends and community.

say suspects then ran off in a black four-door sedan and a burgundy suv. anyone with any information is asked to call milpitas police. >> and in mountain view, police say they're investigating after 3 armed robbers took over a jewelry store there on layton avenue. it happened yesterday morning just before noon. investigators say the robbers took money from the cash register and stole personal belongings from employees and customers. the robbers then left the store and drove off a witness told police one of them shot at them and a bullet hit their car. no injuries were reported, the suspect still are on the loose tonight. well, get ready for the cold. frigid temperatures are expected to dip into the low to mid 30's. national weather service issuing a freeze watch for tomorrow night for many inland areas. it's prompted santa clara county to open warming centers for anyone who needs them. kron four's gayle ong has the story. >> after days of warm temperatures, cold weather is expected to arrive sunday night and continue into

wednesday morning. the national weather service is anticipating frost and freezing temperatures. santa clara county libraries will be available as warming centers to help residents cope with the cold. the county will have several locations open during the day where people can go to warm up, including libraries in cupertino, gilroy, los gatos, no peaches and morgan hill business hours. very thankfully, i have. >> for heater and so i'm good. thank you, josh. raja have been enjoying the dry weather and is now preparing for the cool. i was our you know, it's who's not right now, but normally when it's cold, the chilly temperatures can make for hazardous conditions for those most vulnerable to cold temperatures including unhoused people, the santa clara county office of emergency says people in san jose who need overnight shelter can reach out to the phone number or email you see here on your screen, a number of unhoused people die due to cold exposure last month in the county, the emergency management office shares these tips to take precautions

against hypothermia and to seek shelter. avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day dress in layers, wear a hat, scarf and gloves, mittens, wear waterproof, insulated boots to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. and stay hydrated. >> and the is offering free bus rides to the warming centers. community members will just have to let the drivers know which locations they're going to and coming back from. no proof is required. reporting from cupertino. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> now to our 4 zone forecast tonight taking a live look at sfo. not looking too bad, not too bad. and we know a lot of people, though, are catching flights out of philadelphia for the big game tomorrow. but though, joining us with a look at the weather and the recent. yeah, fortunately, no freeze warnings are frost advisories expected overnight tonight but by sunday night. >> into your monday morning. that's when we're really going to feel that jeep chill. so we're tracking not only freeze warnings for coolest, inland valleys. you could see

overnight lows below 32 degrees and even frost advisories along the coast. and even for most of the east bay shoreline as well. so coastal valleys, we're not going to expedite that bitter cold starting tomorrow night. and that's going to continue through wednesday morning. so let's take a look at conditions out there right now. the east bay over berkeley. we are going to see dry, calm conditions, but temperatures out there right now, low 50's for alameda in half moon bay. but just barely with oakland and hayward at 51 degrees. sonoma in the north bay already dipping into the low 40's as our pet aluma and even santa rose at 42 degrees. but gusty winds going to impact the north bay starting sunday afternoon through monday morning. calm right now. but we could see gusts upwards of 50 miles per hour. less from valleys. >> and even the highest peaks of the north bay for most of sunday, especially sunday night winds are certainly going to how because of this week's storm that could bring us hail snow showers and also very cool temperatures for the 2nd half of the weekend. more

my full%forecast in just a few minutes. back to dana. well. >> thanks a lot. nationwide protests again today after the videos that were released yesterday showing the brutal beating of tyree nichols by 5 memphis police officers. nichols later dying from his injuries. the now former officers all are facing second-degree murder charges. reporter alex caprariello has the very latest in the investigation. but we do want to warn you the video you're about to see is graphic and disturbing. >> thousands of americans are once again protesting police brutality following the video released of the beating of 29 year-old tyree nichols 3 weeks ago in memphis. the close a body cam footage paired with bird's-eye video from an overhead street poll reveals the graphic and intense assault. 5 now fired. memphis police officers laid down on the 29 year-old. the footage begins midway through the january 7th traffic stop. >> with guns drawn, you can see police officers pulled

nichols out of his car and wrestled him to the ground. one officer would later claim he tried to pull nichols over after witnessing him driving into oncoming traffic after a brief struggle, an officer attempts to tase him, but he gets away on foot. nichols is later discovered in a nearby neighborhood overhead cameras capture several officers using their fists, boots and batons to strike nichols across the head and body widest at least 2 officers deployed pepper spray. you can hear nichols called for his mother as the beating continued for another 3 and a half minutes until other help arrives. >> saw the police not respect that man as a human to have that much power as a police and utilizing that is >> following the video release, the reaction across the country was swift from coast to coast. protesters called for sweeping police

reform. most demonstrations remained peaceful, although several people were handcuffed in new york city after smashing in a car's windshield. this is something we see continuously. it's something new to us, but it's still going on and for them to do something. and the fallout continues in memphis. the shelby county sheriff, after watching the tape says he recognized 2 of his deputies on scene. they've now been relieved of their duties while an internal investigation examines their role in the arrest and to memphis fire department emt's who provided the initial medical care to nickels are now under investigation. despite staff arriving immediately with medical equipment, it took more than 20 minutes for nichols to receive medical attention. >> that was alex caprariello reporting for us tonight. as for the 5 police officers facing those charges of second degree murder, they have all been released on bond. >> and we're learning tonight memphis police have permanently disbanded its scope scorpion unit, all 5 officers who were fired and charged in tyree nichols death

at city hall. so let's go forty-niners hope they bring on the w because we definitely want a super bowl win, especially in the weeks ahead. so let's take a look at radar for right now. we're tracking very dry, clear, calm conditions. futurecast for though, going to show some light scattered hit or miss showers primarily for the southern part of the bay area. so >> those of you along the coast, san francisco peninsula, even into the south bay, not only could we see some rain but also mountain snow and hail if any severe weather does form. but we are tracking some light scattered showers hit or miss in nature. so some of you may stay dry. others could actually see some rain and snow showers. believe it or not, especially the highest peaks for those of you in the north bay. but we are going to see drier conditions by sunday night shortly before midnight drying out, clearing out. and this storm is going to leave behind a very cool dry air mass and also bring us around a frost advisories and freeze warnings. and in addition to that, we are tracking some very light rain showers just about a 10th of

an inch of rain or less. as you can see, those of you benefiting south of the bay area's specially half moon bay and mountain dew and san jose with little to no rain for those of you in the north bay. but temperatures out there right now, widespread 40's and 50's tracking a lot of 49 degrees out there. i think that's a sign for forty-niners, right? guys. 49 degrees for redwood city downtown san francisco and dublin, barely in the low 40's for sonoma at 40 degrees. so we are going to see subfreezing temperatures starting sunday night lasting through wednesday morning where we could actually dipped below 32 degrees for coldest inland valleys near freezing tonight for santa rosa. napa in the mid 30's. but fortunately, no watches and warnings tonight. temperatures tomorrow, 5 to 10 degrees below normal. low to mid 50's. hard to believe we're in the 70's just a few days ago. but now we are definitely getting that taste of winter continuing through monday and even some light scattered showers by friday after our

but we are seeing i-80 at castle peak, very dry, clear conditions, but we're going to see gusty winds in most of the valleys of this year's starting overnight. 4 o'clock sunday morning through sunday night. so the valleys for south lake tahoe and pyramid lake gusting upwards of 35 miles per hour. that could increase wave heights to as high as 3 feet. and in addition to that, we have a winter weather advisory going into effect for the same hours. so we're expecting to get inches of snow for most of this year with this week. fast-moving storm elevations above 7,000 feet, you can get up to 8 inches of fresh powder and throughout this year, ridgecrest 70 mile per hour wind speed. so right now, the calm before the storm, but future cast for going to track those snow showers arriving by early sunday morning and by early sunday afternoon. that's when it's really going to peak until starts to fizzle out making it struck out of this by sunday night. but a very cool and dry air mass will be in place. mid 20's expected

tomorrow. that's going to linger on monday. even with that extra sunshine until we rebound 10 degrees by tuesday in the mid 30's. so enjoy and have fun. back to you, dan and well risa. thank you to the east bay where 5 people are under arrest. >> in connection to 27 different convenience and liquor store robberies all across the bay area. hayward police shared this surveillance video of one of those robberies. this would only talk about 60 seconds from start to finish. each of the stores say they were robbed of cash and cigarettes between july and december of last year during the arrest, police also recovered 2 loaded firearms and 2 replica firearms. 3 people are dead and 4 others are injured in an overnight shooting in los angeles. >> this is the latest mass shooting in california just this month. it happened in the beverly crest neighborhood at a short term rental home early this morning. police say 3 people were killed inside of a car. 2 of the surviving victims are in critical condition. 2 others also recovering at the hospital.

investigators are right now trying to figure out what kind of gathering was happening at this multi million dollar rental. we can confirm that this was not an active shooter. >> situation or incident were interviewing some of the people that were involved and some of the people that were here involved means that we're here at this gathering. so we're still trying to get information from them. investigators are also combing a neighborhood for any surveillance video any audio or any additional evidence that could help them pinpoint exactly what happened here today. >> police are releasing no information about the suspects or suspects but indicated they don't believe the public is in danger. >> also in southern california, man is in custody after he allegedly targeted and shot 3 different groups of people killing one person, injuring several others. this happened friday night in san diego. 22 year-old jaime gonzalez was booked on one count of murder. 5 counts of attempted murder as well as additional firearms-related charges. police claim he drove to 3 separate san diego area

neighborhoods randomly targeted groups of people. when police found his car, they also found a 9 millimeter handgun. as of now, it appears gonzalez acted alone. in national news tonight, a train derailment in louisiana has spilled more than 10,000 ggllons of acid products. the accident happened just before midnight and prompted residents to evacuate their homes. >> for one and a half mile radius around the spill. jalen jackson has more. >> a train derailment key louisiana caused residents to evacuate from their homes last night after over 10,000 gallons of acid products were spilled from one of the train cars. it was 126 residences that we ultimately were able to make contact with an evacuated. >> and we were able to do that fairly quickly. sheriff jason richardson says they have even blocked off the area by a 2 mile radius for safety reasons. but he does expect that to change sooner than later. we have air quality monitoring going on currently

intentionally. multiple employees were in the building at the time of the crash, but no one was injured. the drivers now been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, assault, attempted assault and attempted vehicular homicide. >> well, back here in california, it's been just over a month since academic workers with the university of california ratified a new labor contract winning wage increases in ending their 40 day strike. but now the uc system in schools are grappling with how to actually follow through and pay for those salary bumps. university officials estimate the agreement will cost up to 570 million dollars. and to raise those funds are considering major cutbacks to graduate student missions. campuses may also reduce the amount of teaching assistants and researchers administrators have yet to decide on a system i'd planned but fear. we'll need to make drastic changes to foot the bill. >> google recently announced it's laying off 1800 employees in california. not only will
