>> tonight at 8 solemn moments of remembrance for the elderly asian man killed 2 years ago in san francisco. his death in raging the nation and igniting a movement. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 8. >> i'm dan thorn and i'm noelle bellow. today marks 2 years since 84 year-old vicha ratanapakdee was killed. he was violently shoved to the ground, attacked in the middle of the day. and san francisco's on vista neighborhood kron four's amanda hari was at today's vigil where they remembered his life's amanda. >> today's event was to remember him. he's not the only member of the san francisco community who has fallen victim to violence. >> january 28th marks 2 years since 84 year-old the show raton up was taken from his family, friends and community. he died after being pushed to

overnight in memphis in new york and in los angeles, some of the demonstrations growing physical between protesters and police as you can see there. >> and we are learning tonight, memphis police have permanently disbanded its scorpion unit. all 5 officers who were fired and charged in tyree nichols death were members of that unit that he was originally tasked with writing the memphis streets of gang activity in violent crime. but in response to nichols death and the thousands of demonstrators calling for sweeping police reform. the department has dismantled the squad. the police department says the remaining officers assigned to the unit agree with this decision. >> saying the heinous. >> actions of a few has cast a cloud of dishonor on the unit. >> well, those images from the body cam video stirring up emotions of the family of rodney king traitor. triggering parallels to king being beaten by la police more than 30 years ago the shot spoke with robin king's daughter.

>> well, years ago i had an opportunity to talk with rodney king and meet his family here in sacramento today i spoke with his daughter, laura, and she shared her feelings about how police treated tyree nichols and what she thinks about police work. nearly 32 years after her father was beaten by police. >> guys need a hand. it can. yeah. and for them to do that, that let you know that again, this is edited laura king spoke with me in her car while on the way to a speaking engagement. it when i put him over the tone of the language everything was so he ran for his sacramento native tyree nichols died 3 days later after 5 memphis police officers beat him during a traffic stop earlier this month. police body cam video which was released on friday shows those officers pull him from the car and use pepper spray and a stun gun. he ran on foot but officers caught up. you see them punch and

>> and laura king acknowledges that police officers are exposed to horrific things on the job, but she says better mental evaluations need to be opdone on those who are hired t be law enforcement officers reporting in sacramento rowena shaddox. >> new at 8, 5, people are under arrest in connection to 27 different convenience and liquor store robberies across the bay area. hayward police shared this surveillance footage of one of the robberies which only took about 60 seconds from start to finish. >> each of the stores say they were robbed of cash and cigarettes between july and december of last year during the arrest. police also recovered 2 loaded firearms and 2 replica firearms. well, get ready for the cold. frigid temperatures are expected to dip into the low to mid 30's. >> the national weather service issuing a freeze watch for many inland areas that has prompted santa clara county to open warming centers for anyone who needs that starting tomorrow. kron four's gayle

ong has more. >> after days of warm temperatures, cold weather is expected to arrive sunday night and continue into wednesday morning. the national weather service is anticipating frost and freezing temperatures. santa clara county libraries will be available as warming centers to help residents cope with the cold. the county will have several locations open during the day where people can go to warm up, including libraries in cupertino, gilroy, los gatos, no peaches and morgan hill business hours very thankfully, i have. >> heater and so i'm good. thank you, josh. raja have been enjoying the dry weather and is now preparing for the coal. i our you know, it's who's not right now, but normally when it's called, the chilly temperatures can make for hazardous conditions for those most vulnerable to cold temperatures including unhoused people, the santa clara county office of emergency says people in san jose who need overnight shelter can reach out to the phone number or email you see here on your screen, a number

of unhoused people die due to cold exposure last month in the county, the emergency management office shares these tips to take precautions against hypothermia and to seek shelter. avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day dress in layers, wear a hat, scarf and gloves, mittens, wear waterproof, insulated boots to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. and stay hydrated. >> and the is offering free bus rides to the warming centers. community members will just have to let the drivers know which locations they're going to and coming back from. no proof is required. reporting from cupertino. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> with that, we want to get you a check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live look at downtown san francisco. transamerica pyramid it's not as cold as it's going to be tomorrow. it looks like it's going to be pretty chilly breeze. so what's happening? >> yeah, that's right. not only do we have a frost advisory in effect for bay area coastline, but a freeze warning that's going to go into effect sunday at midnight through monday morning. so

tonight we're going to start to feel those cooler temperatures certainly felt it today this afternoon, especially with the return of that marine layer, but a very dry cool, crisp night out there in the bay area, widespread mid to upper 40's along the bay area coastline. timber on novato and fairfax already cooling down into the mid 40's. and as you make your way inland, barely in the low 50's even downtown san francisco cooling down to 49 degrees. the gusty winds will be in the forecast starting sunday afternoon through monday afternoon because of wind gusts 50 miles per hour. less for north bay valleys and even our highest peaks right now relatively calm conditions. but as i fast forward to when that wind advisory goes into effect sunday afternoon, we're going to see those warm, dry, offshore breezes arriving by around sunday. not really going to help warm up our temperatures, though, even with that northerly flow. and those diablo winds because we're tracking a light storm, believe it or not, arriving

making the trip to the city of brotherly love, ensuring that the team feels the love even on the road and tomorrow's do or die nfc championship. the team arrived in philadelphia last night. lots of fans were already there. >> to cheer them on proper sports reporter kate rooney is in philly checking out a fan event near lincoln financial field earlier today. philly has a bit of a reputation for

being, shall we say, less than welcoming to opposing fan groups. but plenty of 40 niner fans made the trip been put on the red and gold. and we even spoke to some philly locals who just wanted a safe space to where their true colors. >> the event was called a forty-niners fan invasion. the team took over restaurant and bar in south philly called xfinity live just across the street from the stadium. and not only did they enjoy some time with fellow fans, but a dj. was there playing very a hip-hop with songs like california love. there's a photo booth at, of course, plenty of forty-niners swagg to go around. we spoke to a lot of fans from the bay area and other parts of california who made the trip along with, like i said, some philly locals and they also said they wanted to show their support for their favorite squad. i got the court to all ready to first time coming out to a playoff game in philadelphia a game in the you the brow or are going to again. he goes i

highest peaks. unfortunately, not going to be a big drought buster, but the good news is it's not also going to be an atmospheric river, but we are going to see some light scattered hit or miss showers. >> just about a 10th of an inch of rain or less. here's a look at our forty-niners camera and you can see we're really in that forty-niners fear rooting on our hometown teams. so let's hope we get the w tomorrow. temperatures out there right now, though, widespread mid to upper 40's along the coast and already cooling down into our north bay valleys. so not going to be subfreezing tonight, but has that weak storm passes? we are going to see some very chilly temperatures sunday night through monday morning. and then again, monday night through tuesday morning. so overnight lows for san jose and even temperatures in concord out there right now, the early in the 50's. but not going to be as chilly as what we're expecting sunday night at midnight through monday morning. we're not only are we going to have widespread frost advisories along the coast and east bay shoreline, but freeze

warnings in effect for most of our valley. so overnight lows tonight, we're going to see temperatures near freezing for santa rosa. 34 degrees with mid 30's for but low to mid 40's for most of the bay area. but then we're going to see temperatures really dip starting tomorrow night. so bundle up and plan ahead. temperatures tomorrow, though, low to mid 50's. so about 4 to 8 degrees below average in taking a look ahead at the next 7 day forecast even as that weak storm system passes sunday, we're going to see a very clear, but chilly day on monday and then gradually warming up to seasonal temperatures by the end of next week with the return of scattered showers on friday. no major storms making its way into the bay area. but we are going to see temperatures finally rebounding in the low 60's, very mild for the first weekend of february. back to you, dan and well, murray said thank you. >> a new way to cheat to its called chat gpt and it can compose poetry. do mathematics

january 31st. at covered ca dot com. >> it's been just over a month since academic workers with the university of california ratified a new labor contract winning wage increases and ending their 40 day strike. but now the uc system in schools are grappling with how to actually follow through and pay for those salary bumps. university officials estimate the agreement will cost up to 570 million dollars and to raise those funds. they're considering major cutbacks to graduate student admissions campuses may also reduce the amount of teaching assistants and researchers administrators have yet to decide on a systemwide plan, but they do fear they'll need to make some drastic changes to foot the bill. meanwhile, google recently announced it's laying off 1800 employees in california. not only will staff feel the pain of seeing close colleagues walk out the door. they'll also have to get by without regular massages on the job. that's right. 27 of

>> welcome back. our top story this half hour. authorities in southern california are investigating the shooting deaths of at least 3 people. and the shooting happened early this morning in the benedict canyon area of los angeles. just outside of beverly hills. police say the victims were killed inside a car. >> parked in front of a rental home. 4 other people were shot outside the house in 2 of them remain in critical condition. there were no immediate arrests. officials are working to determine whether there was a gathering of some sort going on at the time. we can confirm that this was not an active shooter. >> situation or incident were interviewing some of the people that were involved and some of the people that were here involved means that we're

here at this gathering. so we're still trying to get information from them. investigators are also combing the neighborhood for any surveillance video any audio or any additional evidence that can help them pinpoint exactly what happened here today. >> police are releasing no information about the suspect or suspects, but they indicated they believe the public is not in danger. >> also in southern california, a man is in custody after he allegedly targeted and shot 3 different groups of people killing one and injuring several others friday night. this happened in san diego. 22 year-old jaime gonzalez was booked on one count of murder. 5 counts of attempted murder as well as additional firearms-related charges. police claim gonzalez drove to 3 separate san diego area neighborhoods and randomly targeted groups of people. when police found his car, they also found a 9 millimeter handgun inside as of now, it appears the suspect acted alone.

>> back here in the bay area, police are investigating a pair of armed robberies at 2 jewelry stores. the first one was in milpitas. it happened yesterday afternoon around 2.40, at the milpitas small shopping center on landis avenue. police say one of the suspects shot a gun toward employee in the storm. no one was hit, though. police say the suspects then ran off in a black four-door sedan and a burgundy suv. anyone with any information about this is asked to call no peace. police. >> and in mountain view, police say they're investigating after 3 armed robbers took over a jewelry store in late them avenue. this one happened yesterday morning just before noon. investigators say the robbers took money from the cash register and stole personal belongings from employees and customers. robbers then left the store and drove off a witness told police one of the robbers shot at them and a bullet hit their car. no injuries were reported, the suspects are still on the loose. >> dramatic surveillance video shows the moment a truck slams into the lobby of the grand junction police department in

colorado. police say the driver did it intentionally. multiple employees were in the building at the time of the crash, but no one was injured. the driver was arrested and charged with several offenses, including attempted murder, attempted assault and attempted vehicular homicide. >> the girl scout cookie season is going to be pushed back for some folks living in kentucky after a semi truck hauling thousands of boxes was involved in a fiery crash. it happened earlier this week in the city of pendleton fire. officials there say no injuries were reported. the cookie season, of course, runs through april nationwide. hopefully those girl scouts can >> that's a you know, favorite. think burrow was guy. i'm way they're pretty much all pretty good to me. yeah, they are pretty good. i don't really like coconut, but i love a good so hopefully this is supposed to yeah. hopefully they can. this supposed to be the golden gate bridge, right? this a little dark? super donald dark tonight?

>> but at least it's not as cold as it's going to be tomorrow night. i know that for sure. and it's probably even colder up in the sierra yeah, exactly. we're tracking some more snow showers. it's going to be on the lighter side. it's great to see that fresh powder making its way back to this year for the 2nd half of your weekend. let's take a look at your sierra snowpack averaging 214% of normal. and i-80 at donner summit. if you want to head out there and enjoy that fresh snow you should head out now because we are tracking some gusty winds starting during the overnight hours early sunday morning through sunday night. wind gusts upwards of 35 miles per hour. less expected. that's going to increase wave heights, especially out our lakes, pyramid lake and even south lake tahoe up to 3 feet. so just keep that in mind. in addition to that, there is a winter weather advisory in effect. also for this sunday, all day. so let's take a look at snow totals with this

7,000 feet, you could get up to 8 inches of fresh powder. and for most of the valleys in this year at 35 mile per hour wind speeds. but throughout this year, ridgecrest nearly double that amount. 70 mile per hour wind it is going to be on the weaker side. very dry, calm and clear conditions. but as i move forward, futurecast for we're going to see those snow showers arriving early sunday morning peaking by sunday afternoon and then exiting by sunday night. so it is going to be a very fast-moving storm by monday. we're going to have a very dry and cool air mass in place. but temperatures tomorrow. 28 degrees for south lake tahoe, truckee in the mid 20's. and just look at how chilly it's going to get in the upcoming days, especially monday. once that storm exit exits, it is going to leave behind a very cool and dry air mass. partly cloudy skies. temperatures even cooler than the day you get snow. 25 degrees as a result rebounding about 12 degrees by tuesday with mostly sunny skies in the

>> very cool to great update. well, the san jose sharks have been celebrating the lunar new year with do warm-up jerseys. here's a look. it features a shark breaching the water showing teeth with an asian theme frame. you can also see for rabbits in honor of the year of the rabbit. the shoulders of the jersey are covered with the chinese lantern and a dorsal fin out of the water with fireworks exploding in the sky above the jerseys were designed by a san jose color artist and first generation vietnamese american woman named sarah fan. >> it's been so fun. i celebrate new year so much every year. so it was like just like all my world's put into one designed it was really cool. >> the jerseys remain available for auction after the january 18th game against dallas. proceeds benefited blood donation efforts in northern and central california. >> the forty-niners made some changes to their roster on the eve of their nfc championship
