tv   KRON 4 News at 6pm  KRON  January 23, 2023 6:00pm-6:31pm PST

6:00 pm
>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> and that breaking news tonight at 6. we're continuing to follow the story out of half moon bay where the number people killed is now 7 and a pair of shootings that occurred this afternoon. thank you for joining us here for kron. 4 news at 6. i'm pam moore. i'm ken wayne. the suspected shooter is in custody. police have identified him as >> 67 year-old league he is a half moon bay resident. here is video of him being taken by san mateo county sheriff's deputies. the sheriff's office says the victims were found it 2 separate locations course. what we don't know is the motive. why all of this happened today? well, for sarah stinson is live in san mateo county at the sheriff's substation and downtown half moon bay. sara, we know we're waiting for a news conference to begin while we wait, just bring us up to date on what you know. >> that's exactly right. we
6:01 pm
are waiting for that press conference to start, but i can tell you while the scenes that we've been talking about are about a mile away, we came right here to san mateo county substation waiting for press conference around 4.30. and that is when i witnessed the suspect being arrested right here in front of the substation. and i've been concentrating their efforts on that maroon suv ever since they have confirmed that, in fact, the shooting suspect they were looking for since about 2 o'clock suspected of now killing 7 people total at 2 separate locations. and we have video that we can show you from the scene. in the meantime, we also can show what's behind me here. again, this all breaking out at 2.22 this afternoon. the sheriff's department being dispatched to it could real highway unincorporated part of this county. a very coach will base area and they upon arrival found 4 people shot and killed a 5th person still alive,
6:02 pm
suffering from gunshot wounds. they were able to transport that person to stanford medical center with life-threatening injuries. at that time, they did not have the shooter, but that shortly after they did find 3 additional victims all killed by gunshot wounds and they were at this point scrambling trying to find the shooter, the motive of the shooting and they were locking down nearby schools and businesses now through their investigation. and as you heard earlier, the suspect now being identified as is out shooting lane, a 67 year-old man from half moon bay. and it is him that i witnessed 4.40, right here at the substation in the parking lot of the sheriff's office truly was taken into custody without incident. we did talk with a woman whose car was right next to him. she was waiting for the press conference herself. curious, worried for her community. >> and she had no idea she was sitting next to the suspected killer. i think we have sound from her free. do let's play
6:03 pm
that >> i was surprised to you hear and of course, hopeful that he came here to turn himself in and you know who knows but i to him, it was it was shocking. and i was glad that it happened without incident that was very impressed with the way officers handled take down and it was not a chaotic the take down. it was authoritative, but it wasn't in any energy to the situation. so it was well handled in my opinion that you >> yeah, they were able to get him into handcuffs and then bring him into the substation. as you heard from katie, it's unclear if you came here to turn himself in. but he was sitting in his suv and it became very clear because they had been looking for that suv, that that was their suspected shooter. and that's when they approached the suv with their
6:04 pm
guns drawn. and then arrested him. now we are waiting for that press conference. but at least at this hour, i know the community is extremely, extremely on edge and devastated by this. we can tell you that they they're saying the threat is over. the community is safe now that they have their suspected shooter in custody. now, hopefully we can get more information once the start. and once it does start, we'll bring it to you live for now. we'll send it back to just to be clear, we're talking about 3 different locations associated with this incident. you are at the sheriff's substation. >> where the suspect was arrested by deputies said this was just before 5 o'clock this evening. and then we have to other locations where the shooting took place. what can you tell us about those 2 other locations and how far they are from you? >> well, i was figure out where i should report live from, but i knew we wanted the latest information we needed to stay here. we do have crews
6:05 pm
at the other location when i there, it took me all of 3 minutes. it was a about a mile away off of highway 92. and that is where i saw a lot of deputies surrounding a lot of news crews as well and the we just heard from kate in case she lives here. she's within the agricultural community. she said that it's by a soil farm by a mushroom farm. and it's a a popular area, an area that many of the use of farm workers go to daily and the fact that this happened middle of the day, 2 o'clock. very concerning for this small agricultural area. this area that's not necessarily known for crime, mostly known to be a sleepy beach community with agriculture. >> at this point there, there is no indication that anyone else was involved. the community is right now and there's no active shooter there still will search going on for additional reportedly involved with this crime. as far as we know at this moment, correct.
6:06 pm
>> that's right, pam. we did hear from the san mateo county sheriff's office. they did say the threat to the community is over. according to them, they found the shooting suspect they were looking at looking for rather and of course, multiple locations of where the shooting happened. you% want to know? did they find the person responsible for all of it? and so far they said, yes, 7 people killed, though. and now the community reeling. hopefully we can get people more information. i know people are kind of really hoping we do so. >> yeah, we're trying make a determination on what led up to this shooting. were these 2 locations targeted with specific people in mind where these coworkers or some relationship colleagues of some kind with the suspect or was this random? and it's kind of a similar situation to what we've seen in southern california with, you know, 2 different dance clubs targeted. now we have 2 different locations up here
6:07 pm
too unanswered questions to try to pieces together. but in the meantime, you know, when you're told by authorities set, there's no threat. it's safe. that doesn't make it feel any less scared about what's going on out there. i mean, how are people doing right now that you've been able to assess? >> mean, that's exactly right. even though you hear that you don't necessarily feel safe. i mean, the one we had from earlier, she was very concerned for community. that's where she came here as a concerned citizen trying to hear for herself. what the latest information is. guess what now? her own car is in the 3rd crime scene. yellow tape up. she had no idea she beat parks next to the suspected shooter. so talk about hitting close to home. people are feeling extremely devastated. you're still reeling from a mass shooting that happened within our state down in l a and then you hear
6:08 pm
about one right where you live. i can only imagine how the people of half moon bay are feeling right now. and of course, hopefully we can talk to more people. >> but this area very secluded. it's right at the substation and the people who were kind of on lockdown in this area. they got out. but the people parked behind here, they're stuck waiting for their vehicles. >> to be clear, are you talking about shoreline station? is that where you are be off of kelly avenue and highway one? >> yeah, 5, 3, 7, kelly avenue. this is a substation of the sheriff's department. >> and there's a lot of other businesses. it's a kind of a strip mall shopping center area which also has a substation right? >> sarah, stand by. we want to get some reaction. you were mentioning the incident that happened over the weekend in southern california. the governor reacting now to this. so stand by as we wait. >> forward law enforcement about the news conference. governor newsom tweeting about this latest mass shooting saying, quote, at the hospital
6:09 pm
meeting with victims of a mass shooting. when i get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting, this time in half moon bay tragedy upon tragedy. the white house press secretary karine jean pierre tweeted out this evening saying president joe biden has been >> briefed by homeland security on the shooting. the president has asked federal law enforcement to provide any necessary assistance to local authorities here in san mateo county. and as more details become available, the president will be updated. so just to reiterate, again, this all started started unfolding just after 2 o'clock this afternoon. >> the first reports we got involved for people being shot 3 at one location, one at another. then as the started coming in, we learned that actually there were more people who have been injured and some of those people also died in the shooting. now we're talking about 7 people have been killed, at least one other person still in the hospital dealing with injuries. we do not know the
6:10 pm
severity of those injuries at this hour. nonetheless, traumatizing for everyone in the small community of half moon bay, which most of us here in the bay area know is a agricultural and more of a tourist location. i think maybe 12 to 13,000 people actually live in half moon bay and the whole region has now shaken not by just this incident, but also the weekend incident in southern half moon bay very popular weekend getaway for people who don't live there. >> hop over the hill and in the, you know, in the wintertime to get over by the beach and and and in the summertime, surfers like to hang out there and, you crab enthusiast in those kinds of people like to be over there as well. this is video from earlier this afternoon around the time that the suspect was a taken into custody. it was it was kind of a surprise was definitely a surprise for all the reporters were told to go to that location to get an update from authorities on the
6:11 pm
status of the investigation. and as reporters from stations all over the bay area, thth senate on this, a substation in this parking lot. all of a sudden they witness to sheriff's deputies, as you see there, paying special attention maroon colored suv and at some see it right here. but at some point the person was in that vehicle was arrested and that's him right there in handcuffs being led away by sheriff's deputies said through the locked gate there where you can see other sheriff's vehicles there taken into custody. so we don't what prompted that arrest if he drove there to confess, if he just happened to be there for some reason, all of that is still up in the air. we're still trying to get that information and we are standing by for san mateo county sheriffs authorities to give us an update on exactly what happened. you see start, a police the other deputies with the suspect in handcuffs, holding him by his arms,
6:12 pm
walking him back to that locked area behind the substation in half moon bay ca, of course, a law enforcement having to secure 2 crime scenes, at least that we know of so far probably easily suspect that not only the sheriffs and local police, but probably federal law enforcement and state officials will also be on hand to assess all of the details associated with a crime of this we're not sure exactly who is going to be in the news conference is coming up. we do know that the sheriffs will be involved, whether the other law enforcement agencies will be speaking. we don't know at this point, but with 7 dead, there's a lot of interest throughout northern california about what led to this kind of an incident. and it's going to be a long night. there's going to be detectives, investigators who are going to be. >> they are going to be out all night long at those crime scenes, a gathering evidence when there's no one homicide takes a lot of effort to, you
6:13 pm
know, try to solve that case. well, now we have 7 and that's going to complicate it. it's going to make it much more. you know, complex as they sift through all this evidence, gather all the evidence, find out more about each victim, any potential relationship to the with the suspect. so this is going to be a long, long process. police check and back in with our reporter at the sheriff's substation. that's where sarah stinson a standing by. if you've been keeping us up to date, are you seeing? >> any movement toward law enforcement to getting ready for this news conference >> unfortunately, we're not seeing a lot of movement here. i'm still waiting for them to come out. we're seeing, of course, the yellow tape here we're seeing again way there in the darkness that a suv that they're concentrating on but really waiting for them to come out and give us this press conference. of course, we've really been waiting for a press conference since 4.30, but they were busy. of course, this is the 3rd crime scene that they have in this case.
6:14 pm
they have 2 over near highway. 92 you could highway dot is where they have 7 people killed. >> 4 in one location, 3 and the other a 5th person, you know, who is fighting for their life right now at stanford medical center. so it's just a very intense situation for them. and one that very fluid. and it looks like there might be some movement here. we may have someone coming look at that will take it will take it live once it happens. but it looks like they're going start any minute now. hopefully, again, the person they need to. but while we wait, i might as well as just d brief. you're just joining us now. what we learned earlier. so when we came to this parking lot, we're waiting for a press conference around 4.30, and that is when we saw deputies arrest a man and that turns out to be shooting. lea 67 will have half moon bay resident and they actually arrested that person right in front of me inside. he's a
6:15 pm
maroon suv. they they've confirmed they found a gun as well. the gun they believed to be used in this mass shooting. >> the shooting that has now taken the lives of 7 people. and so what we're waiting to find out is how did know that it was jean red or maroon suv that they're looking for? how did they know he was the shooter? >> what do they think? the motive is? do they think he's an agricultural worker? who's disgruntled? is it at random? there's a lot of questions that continue right now. and we're actually seeing some deputies walk into this parking lot where this unfolded, where this arrest took just heard from them, they said it's going to be 20 to 30 more minutes. so sorry to everyone at home. i know a lot of the half moon bay residents are on edge and they want to know more information. we've been waiting for it for hours. but as you can imagine, very complex case. >> 2 scenes with my 3 victims, that one for the other. and then this scene where they
6:16 pm
actually arrested schenley. now we want to know, did julie come here to turn himself we don't know. so as that as the minutes go on. i know the anxiety grows for residents here, but just know that as soon as this press conference starts, we will take it live and we will bring you the latest because we know this information is crucial. i mean, it can. pam. we had schools on lockdown. we had business is on lockdown. so this has really affected half moon bay. word has gotten around town and people want to know why did this happen? i mean, of course, never really makes enough sense to anyone after we learn more about a mass shooting. >> everyone still reeling from what happened down in southern california. and now we're hearing about this on our own backyard. are sleepy agricultural beach town, where we go to see the ocean and get clam chowder. and now we're here talking about another mass shooting in our country. so. >> ken and pam, we'll bring you that press conference. but unfortunately.
6:17 pm
>> 20 to 30 more minutes. all right. what you will be waiting 20 to 30 minutes if that's what it takes to to carry this live. we're not going anywhere here on kron. 4 and we should point out, pam, that in all likelihood they had a scheduled news conference before they knew that they were going to arrest somebody in their own parking lot. that's certainly thrown a loop in this whole thing. and they probably have a whole lot of new information after talking with the suspect. if they're able to getting any information. but they're they're learning a lot more than they initially thought they were going to present. so this news conference should be illuminating to say the least, of course, as we mentioned earlier, the president of the united states as well as the governor of california, reacted to the shooting. we want to check in with ella sogomonian. she's in our newsroom has been gathering reaction from other sources l a. >> well, ken and pam, of course, this week wait anxiously to see who exactly was shot by this shooter here tonight, government leaders are taking to social media to share their concerns.
6:18 pm
>> about yet another mass shooting right here in the state of california. let's take a look with and david kind of he is a board supervisor for san mateo county earlier tonight he tweeted that he is heartbroken by the gun violence in monterey park and half moon bay. how many more must die. smc board of supervisors are taking action by pledging 2 million dollars over 2 years for the smc gun violence prevention program to remove guns from felons, stockers and others prohibited and other prohibited individuals. senator josh becker also from the area went on to say that gun violence has come to our district today and i will do whatever i can to support the san mateo county sheriff's department and half moon bay city officials during this tragic event. we will continue to monitor the situation. my thoughts go out to all those affected. he also went on to say 7 people now dead and half moon bay shootings today. when is enough going to be enough for this country? also,
6:19 pm
lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis not sharing specific words of her own, but she did retweet this from the office of the governor of california saying family members of victims, those injured and witnesses of the monterey park shooting may qualify for compensation through a program called helping victims. so we're going to keep an eye on whatever else other government leaders have to say as well as local officials. for now, i'm live in the newsroom. ella sogomonian back to you. all love. thank you for that. again, we are awaiting a news conference from law enforcement at the san mateo county substation, sheriff's substation where they will >> come out and bring us all up to date on what has happened this afternoon. but we do know that 7 people are dead and one person is still in critical condition. as soon as that news conference starts, we will bring it to you live and should be in a matter of minutes. we'll be matter of minutes. we'll be right back.

6:23 pm
right outside the san mateo county sheriff's department substation in half moon bay. not clear why he was there. what he was doing at plan to surrender. we don't know how deputies determined that that was the suspect. nonetheless, he was handcuffed and taken away and this was around the same time that they had already scheduled to have a news briefing about the 4 dead and then subsequent to that we learned 3 additional fatalities and an we don't know if there are potentially other suspects or not. again, we have not heard from authorities until coming up in the next few minutes. we're expecting within 5 or 10 minutes to have a briefing from the san mateo county sheriff's department. and reaction, of course, has been coming in from across the we heard earlier from the governor who at the time him tweeting his. >> marks about what has happened in san mateo county was visiting people victims from the shooting in southern
