>> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at known. >> now at 9, the golden gate bridge back open tonight after an overturned big rigs shut down lanes for a couple hours causing a major traffic backup. thanks for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 9. i'm noelle bellow. that crash happened around 06:30pm tonight. chp tells us the driver was removed from the truck. good news. no reported injuries to anyone so far. chp did have to completely closed down both directions of the bridge for some time for crews

to get the truck upright and then off the bridge. this all happened that'll happen just before 08:30pm, tonight. you can see just how bad traffic was earlier, folks were die verdant away from the freeway and the bridge northbound lanes were backed up. southbound lanes backed up. but again, all lanes now back open in both directions. with that. we want to get you a live look outside. this is what it looks like now. the roads still a bit slick from all the rains. we got the traffic flowing. the big rig was removed, far cry from what we're seeing about 30 minutes ago. chp is warning large trucks tonight like big rigs to avoid going over the golden gate bridge due to high winds. they want folks, folks driving those big rigs to take alternate routes. want to send things over to mabrisa rodriguez now, as the rain has pretty much dissipated, are we still seeing winds memory? so no calmer winds speeds out there right now,

unfortunately, drier conditions as well. there are some pockets, though, of some moderate downpours out there right now, specifically with those of you over richmond and el sobrante. so just a heads up there even along 80, you are going to notice some pretty moderate though, but pretty light scattered hit or miss showers for most of the north bay and east bay drying out for the san francisco peninsula and south bay. but future cast for still going to show some on again off again, hit or miss showers shortly before midnight and even into your sunday morning. we could see a stray shower or 2. >> bring us some light to moderate rain. going to be short, lived the 1st half of sunday going to be fairly dry. but then round 2 of the atmospheric river for this weekend set to arrive by early sunday night. and as you can see, it's going to arrive from the south and then it's good bench. ali, going to make its way more widespread for the rest of the bay area where we're tracking light to moderate downpour, slight chance possible pop-up thunderstorms with mountain

snow. for those of you over mount hamilton near san jose. so just a heads up their future rain totals about half an inch or more, especially for those of you in the south bay, you could pick up at least an inch of rain along the san francisco peninsula and even south bay. so we have flood warnings through tonight. flood watch. that's going to remain in effect through tuesday until we start to notice a drying trend. find out when that's going to start it for this next couple of days that this upcoming week in just a few minutes. back to, you know, well. thank you. new at 9, a woman jogging in san francisco's golden gate park. >> has died after she was struck by a falling tree branch. it happened just after 5 o'clock this evening near 30th and jfk boulevard. san francisco firefighters tell kron 4 the victims, a 70 year-old san francisco resident. she was found with head trauma next to a large tree branch. firefighters immediately begin lifesaving measures. but unfortunately, they were too late to help. the woman was pronounced dead on scene in bernal heights.

another tree fell down on top of a few cars. it's a pretty big one. this is video from the citizens app near harrison street and pursue that avenue. as you can see, a very large tree down. there are no injuries reported. san francisco fire urging folks to avoid that area. in the east bay. tonight, a sinkhole damage. the storm drain and pittsburgh causing massive flooding to a neighborhood there. kron four's amanda hari spoke with some folks who are stuck inside until the water recedes. >> harbor street behind me is closing on told by police it will likely stay that way until monday. there the barricades you see and then beyond that is a public works. vehicles stopping anyone who may try to get past those barricades on harbor street. there is flooding that's dangerous and makes it completely impassable. >> parts of harbor street from you, 70 drive to greystone place. look more like a lake that a road. it just started coming up of of coming on on

track. and i've been watching coming to my i caught up with bernadine cleaver. she was surveying the damage. she says this is the first time she experienced flooding like this early this morning. there was no water and around 11:00am the flooding began. i'm concerned about the coming into the >> and not only coming into the house, my house in the street in turn into a vote she says city workers came by her home and put some sandbags near her garage. she's hoping that'll be enough to really hold because base is going to be hard to make public works. city engineer john samuelson says this is because of damage caused by the recent storms. we had a sinkhole that opened up on the good shepherd church facility right over our storm. drain line. the storm drain line takes kercher creek from one side of harbor street to the other. it has now been compromised because of the sinkhole. the top of the pipe has failed. >> and soil for above has partially filled this storm.

drain line. so when the massive rain hit this area, it wasn't capable of transporting all the water in the creek from one side district. the other. so the water found another way, which was over the top of the street. lieutenant james terry showed us where the water is supposed to go. >> he says police and fire have been working all day and they believe the homes will be safe. we decided that because it's unlikely the water's going to rise to. >> so we decided not order for it to rise to get to the houses. >> talking >> the fire department says they have their swift water rescue equipment ready just in case there does have to be an evacuation. but as of now, they don't expect that to happen. they say the water will go down as it stops raining and once it completely stops the work on repairing that storm, drain line in pittsburgh, amanda hari kron. 4 news. to the south bay where 3 people had to be rescued from their car as it teetered.

>> on the edge of a cliff, chp, santa cruz say it happened yesterday afternoon in the area of old mill road in los gatos. an officer murphy was able to calm the passengers down and give them clear and concise instructions on how to safely exit their vehicle. all 3 are ok tonight. chp using this as a reminder to only drive during the storms if necessary. and if you have to drive slow down an update now. highway 29 in napa junction back open tonight after being closed for most of the day due to flooding. this is in the city of american canyon. despite the reopening, officials say it's probably still a good idea to avoid that area tonight. and in marin county, a lane reduction in place on westbound state route. 37 just west of novato creek bridge. this is also due to flooding. officials want to remind you use caution when driving be alert for areas that may be barricaded off or roads closed due to excessive flooding. and of course, remember if you encounter any flooded areas, turn around, don't drown. what warnings are

in effect for santa cruz county tonight. one area of particular concern is the san lorenzo river officials spent today carrying out emergency evacuations in the hard-hit community of felton grove alongside the san lorenzo river. it was devastated by flooding in the previous storm. the san lorenzo river flood gauge is projected to flood again at some point today. and here's a live look at pg e outages across the bay area. we are seeing a couple orange yellow splotches around the region. yellow signifying upwards of 500 customers, orange signifying somewhere between 505,000 customers without power of large cluster of them down in the region between san jose and santa cruz county. other areas just kind of spotted around here locally in the bay area. >> we don't care about the weatherman.

patients with you. if you're planning on driving to the sierra this weekend, hopefully you already left. you're already there. officials have reported multiple spinouts on the road throughout today. this was a live look at highway 80 near soda springs tonight. as you can see, snow blanketing the roadway there a lot. we did see that it was a lot busier earlier today. but as night has fallen, as you can there's not really a safe way to get up there this evening. chain controls are in place tonight from drum for beta truckee. just so you're aware. kron 4 meteorologist mabrisa rodriguez joining us now with more on just how much snow they've gotten risa. yes, so far. are you seeing about 230% of average in the sierras? so we're getting and additional feet of snow for most of our valleys. in addition to several feet for the high is pizza. let's take a live look outside and we're tracking slick runways and roadways in the bay area. but starting to dry out, at least for the most part for most of

us. we are seeing, though some light scattered hit or miss showers for most of the north and east bay. but moderate rain for those of you in richmond and also just east or said severe weather in the form of thunder and lightning with snow showers blanketing kirkwood and even south lake tahoe. and most of the western slopes of this year. so that's what we have a winter storm warning in effect now through tuesday morning. in addition to that, an avalanche warning for the greater lake tahoe area, specifically the back country from now through sunday morning because we're tracking several feet of snow. in addition to that, gusty winds throughout the highest peaks for we could see this year. ridgecrest tracking wind gusts of 100 miles per hour. cut that in half for our valleys. 45 mile per hour. wind speeds expected and also one to 2 feet of snow double that amount for elevations above said 7,000 feet, you could actually get up to 5 feet of snow in localized spots when it is all said and done. so we are tracking

widespread snow showers tonight by sunday morning. going to dry out for the most part, a little bit of a break. light scattered hit or miss snow showers. but it isn't until sunday night and mainly on monday. that's when we're really going to notice another run of that atmospheric river, dumping several feet of snow to this year for your martin luther king junior day monday. so hopefully you're already there in this year to celebrate the long holiday weekend because we're tracking snow showers, not just for sunday, but even for the holiday week on monday by tuesday, drying out with partly cloudy skies. and that drying trend going to continue through most of this upcoming weeks. if you do plan on heading out to this taking advantage of that fresh powder, make sure to take advantage of next week is because it's going to be safer driving conditions that back to, you know, well. thank you. marie said developing now in alabama, the death toll has risen to at least 9 after south. earlier this week. residents are now working to pick up the pieces. david lamb from our sister station takes a look at the damage in selma.

>> congresswoman, terri sewell call selma home. >> but has never seen this historic city and the shape it finds itself. now where selma strong and given that we're going to continue to fight and make sure that we we build back better. >> and for mayor james perkins, the city has seen and endured so much, but it will rise to the occasion. once again, the we're resilient people were going to survive this we're going to make it through. this is just going. but it is going to take some work and it's going to take some time and it's going to take some financial resources to get asbestos. >> that was david lamb reporting for us tonight. back here at home, governor gavin newsom honoring a southern california deputy today was shot and killed in the line of duty. riverside county deputy darnell calhoun was first on scene of a disturbance last weekend in lake elsinore. a second deputy showed up and found him wounded. that's when

they confronted the suspect in a shootout. calhoun, though, died from his injuries at the hospital. he was just 30 years old. he's survived by his pregnant wife. his colleagues remembering him as, quote, the most cheerful positive. good wholesome, and you can imagine, end quote. governor newsom released a statement today honoring the deputies saying in part, deputy calhoun died a hero and his bravery and selfless service will always be remembered. collins death comes just a month after the death of another riverside county deputy who also died on the line of duty. he was also in his 30's. back here in the bay area, san mateo county, one person was extricated from a truck on i-280, today. it happened early this morning in the southbound lanes. photos from the scene show at least 6 emergency personnel on the side of the freeway passenger side air bag appear to have been deployed in crews were working around it to cut the door off the truck. the passenger side front end of that truck was crushed from

the impact. the person was hospitalized for further treatment. turning now to the white house where it was a long week for president biden after the news of classified documents from his time as vice president were found at an office in dc and at his home in delaware. all of it leading to a major announcement from attorney general merrick garland this week reshad hudson has more from capitol hill. good afternoon. a special counsel is now investigating president biden's handling of classified documents after material from his time as vice president were found at both his delaware home and a former office. it was in the public interest to appoint a special counsel. attorney general merrick garland appointed robert kerr, a former trump appointed u.s. attorney to look into the matter. the extraordinary circumstances here require the appointment of a special counsel for this matter. president biden responding to the documents being found his private home.

landslide along foothill road in some old blocking one lane in town on main street turnbull and his wife, renee cleaning up where they can. we want to make sure that in the next when the next rains come that the water will flow off of main street than not. >> turnbull says his town may be small, but family struggle here during inclement weather. >> he hopes elected leaders provide resources for those incurring damage. we've got people with flooded basements. we're going to need help from pleasanton sunol road in some old canyon road in fremont. niles canyon road is shut down indefinitely. >> caltrans crews are busy clearing catch basins. so water flows freely into alameda 3. >> the agency says it will reassess the road conditions over the next few days. stay away from. >> because weather like this year, a predictable floods can come on top. you did before and you hit that. you've got tree branches logs, whatever. here's a good chance that

noticing some widespread moderate showers drying out for now. for those of you along golden gate bridge and we actually saw some severe weather with thunder and lightning that actually hit the bridge earlier today. but when tracker for tracking calmer winds speeds out there for pacifica and even downtown san francisco, breezy in the teens with those westerly winds. and we are tracking right now. temperatures for the most part, upper 40's to low 50's half moon bay, the one outlier, the mild a city in the mid-fifties at 54 degrees with overnight lows tonight tracking widespread 40's for most of the bay area. thanks to that blanket of storm cloud cover could see a stray shower or 2 overnight through your sunday morning. but overall, tomorrow going to be a relatively dry day for the 1st half of sunday with that atmospheric river arriving sunday night. but we are expecting temperatures below average 3 to 5 degrees below normal. and taking a look ahead at the next 7 day forecast tuesday will be the next driest day. and then

wednesday, light scattered hit or miss showers. so this one's not going to be an atmosphere river. last one that we're goino to see at least for the next 7 days arrive sunday night through monday. but then take a look at that dry spell starting thursday and lasting all next week. among finally seeing the return of that much needed sunshine for us to clean up and prepare if any more wet weather heads our way. but so far looking dry after next week. back to, you know, well, been waiting for it. thanks to a recent storms impacting us all across the state. this is large boulder blocking the roadway on taylor road between old state highway highway one. 93 right the tunnel in placer county. no word on the one that will reopen. also in placer county mosquito ridge road. starting at mile 7 shut down due to erosion from all the runoff. the area has received >> due to these storm, senior officials from the federal government are now here in california to help the state recover from the damage. capitol correspondent eytan

wallace reports. well, their message to californians is clear, do not get complacent. here they are senior officials from the state and federal government says they met at the california office of emergency services near sacramento. >> among those here, deanne criswell. she's the administrator of the federal emergency management agency commonly referred to as fema. she says fema and other federal agencies have 300 staff members on the ground across california, surveying damage and responding to real-time incidents. now, officials here also stressed the national guard has been deployed to santa barbara to assist in clearing debris and prepare for the next round of storms. theae. in addition to that callaway yeses, preposition swift water rescue teams and ambulances to areas that may be impacted. all of this coming after 2 plus weeks of storms that officials attribute to the deaths of 19 people. officials now urging californians to stay alert. let me emphasize, we are not out of the woods yet. even if you have not experienced an impact from one of the 7

storms that have already come through here. >> that does not mean that you will not experience one from one of these future storms that we're expecting this weekend and into the first part of next week. so again, please stay aware of your surroundings. listen to your local officials heed their advice and do whatever is necessary to make sure that you're taking the appropriate actions to protect yourself and your families and fema administrator criswell says she spoke to president biden earlier this week after he approved an emergency declaration for 41 counties across the state. but now governor newsom has sent biden this letter asking the president to grant not just an emergency declaration. >> but also a major disaster declaration, which is significant because that is the highest level of assistance. the federal government may grant doing so would permit the feds to allocate even more money and resources for california. but now no word from the white house on when the president plans to respond to that request. reporting from callaway s headquarters near sacramento. eytan wallace kron. 4 news. >> the death toll from these

relentless storms that have battered the state over the past 2 weeks is now at 19. authorities say, though, unfortunately, that figure will likely rise. the storms have claimed more lives than any single wildfire since 2018. state officials say these storms could rank among the deadliest natural disasters in california state history. >> for your money tonight, consumers looking for a break in food prices saw some slight improvements in december data from the bureau of labor statistics says purchases for grocery food increase. just 2 tenths of a percent last month, which is the smallest monthly increase since march of 2021. overall, though, food prices still up year over year by about 12% compared to last year. egg prices are up about 60% but are up more than 35% to let us is up. 25 1% and flower is up more than 23%. lawmakers are warning 2 of the largest makers of covid vaccines may be quadrupling

their prices. both moderna and pfizer are considering moves to charge up to $130 per dose. once the shots moved to the commercial marketplace, the federal government currently pays about $30 per dose and distributes them at no cost regardless of a patient's health insurance status. but once the federal supply runs out later this year, the company's plan to shift from an emergency to a more traditional manufacturing model. the white house also commented on this issue. >> price hike here is hard to understand or to justify. we believe the shot should be affordable. >> for now, every covid vaccine is still free for anyone who needs it. the wwe is exploring a sale internationally. while rumors have swirled around the wrestling organization being sold to saudi arabia, the company says it's still exploring its options. w w ii founder vince mcmahon says the move is related to the company's future media rights

rock and roll. and i think >> a lot of people often saw lisa marie as a princess in terms of american music. she's royalty and nobody knew the presley family quite like the phillips is jerry phillips, his father's sam phillips is the founder of the legendary label. sun records company. he discovered elvis produced many of his early hits and is credited with introducing the world to the king of rock and roll is a lot of pride involved in that you know, i know where it started. >> and it started with my father, jerry. but all this, when he was 7 years old, he's listened to countless elvis tales from his late father and recalled late night jam sessions and early morning breakfast with the king. >> i was like everybody else in the world. they want to you and because it was that absolute cause our sunday. you never want me me like, you know, at the molecular structure of the room changed and became an that chemistry, the delta, somebody extended to his family, but especially lisa marie. >> he adored in love dearly.

>> calmer conditions not as severe as what we saw earlier this afternoon shortly before and around. sunset. when we saw that active weather with pop-up thunderstorms. but our next atmospheric river already churning out there in the pacific. so round one starting to exit the bay area during the overnight hours could see a stray shower or 2 through sunday morning. but then drying out for at least the 1st half of your sunday afternoon. so we are going to see the blanket of storm cloud cover overhead and then round 2 of this atmospheric river that's going to arrive sunday night through monday. and it's going to arrive from the south. so we are going to see widespread light to moderate downpours, especially those of you in the south bay. and even along the southern portions of the san francisco peninsula. also tracking some mountain snow by early monday morning over mount hamilton, just east of san jose. so don't be surprised if we wake up to some snow flurries there. but rain totals through monday expected about half an inch of rain, higher amounts for those of you along the san francisco
