spots. glad to see that all out of the picture today. it is going to be much more widespread but lighter soaking rain. we're still going to see some heavier spots. but again, nothing like yesterday's thunderstorm development. your view outside at coit tower right now is looking so nice and calm compared to where we have been. and it is not a bad morning. it is wet out but at this time you're pretty used to the wet conditions. you know how to drive in it. slow it down a little bit for sure. we are seeing some light to moderate showers on the peninsula. bridges or wait. so do take it slower. but nothing super alarming about this morning. we do have some heavier pockets down towards palo alto woodside, out towards half moon bay. that's where heaviest of rainfall seen in the bay right now. overall, this is a widespread soaking rain going to be spread out through the course of the day today. and if we zoom out a little bit further, you can see we have a lot of cloud cover sitting to our west. that's going to push this moisture inland. keep of sweat over the next few hours. our heaviest rainfall will be between 10:00am and 04:00pm. mother nature time to get out.
5:01 am
so it's not in the middle of the commute. that's kind of nice. we will see are very heaviest of showers in the north bay c 11. 45? am here. some yellow and orange on the radar pockets of red here. and there. as i mentioned, we will see some heavy rainfall during this time, but it's nothing like the downpours we saw yesterday towards 05:00pm. we're pretty much done with it a much drier evening commute showers linger a bit longer for the north bay, but towards the evening tonight into tomorrow, he's solid break from the rain that is so needed at this point. we still have flood watches for the north bay. the rest of us have seen flood watch is expiring and winds a lot calmer than they have been. so all of this is a big improvement. 40's and 50's for our current temperatures. definitely a nice morning to bundle up keep the rain jackets on hand. you're going to need them today. talking about today like it's a break already, but we're saving the break for tomorrow today just to step down the severity ladder, which hey, after yesterday does feel good. now rain that we still are wet out there. what's the latest on the road? yeah, we're still wet, but
5:02 am
nothing like we saw yesterday. so an 8 minute drive into the city this morning. so just drive slow just because >> we're not seeing it come down like it was. that doesn't mean you need to drive fast. still leave the house a little early. just in case it starts to come down. we do see any major hot spots. don't see any hot spots right now. 12 minutes a 80 to 101. as you're heading across towards the peninsula. a richmond center fell bridge puts us at about 8 minutes tolls to 1, 1, there. and if you're taking the golden gate bridge, 37 to the tolls about 20 minutes. tara, james, back to we have breaking news not foes fall this time or the weather. a computer outage with the faa is delaying flights nationwide. that, of course having impacts here in the bay area. they're trying to fix it right now. no word, though, on when that will be resolved. >> we do have proper sarah stinson standing by out at sfo with the latest on the story this morning. sarah. >> that's right. the last update from the faa is that they've asked all airlines to pause flights in till 06:00am
5:03 am
our time. and they're saying they're trying to get this problem. this systemwide problem resolved. so here it a forward trying to figure out who all is affected. take a look at the board here. you can see most of it says on time it looks like not a lot has been updated here nor affected so far. according to the sport. but if you look at flightaware, you can see there's a least a couple dozen flights delayed here at sfo. whether that is the weather or whether that is the systemwide problem. that is the question now, according to flightaware as well. take a look at this map. you can see all the planes going from place to place across the country. this is cause 2500 delays nationwide and 1400 plus cancellations. the faa is working to restore its know tam system. so let's just let me tell you what that is a notice to air missions system. >> this is a vital system containing essential information for personnel for flight operations. that's like
5:04 am
flight restrictions, hazards, very critical information that this system gives off. now, take a look at this back out live. you can see people heading into security. it is starting to pick up. i notice that it's always busy or that and the 5 6 o'clock hours. so we'll have to see if anyone is affected. we have caught up with a few people flying only said, well, my flight's not till 7 so so far. haven't seen any alerts or anything like that. however, so far, the faa says they're pausing all flights till 06:00am so will this be a problem for the later flights? will we see a ripple effect? that's something we'll have to keep our eyes on right here from sfo. back to you. >> yeah, that would be worth checking out, sarah, because i think if think all or most of the flights at up sfo, don't take off till 6. but what you're talking about is the dominoes, right? so they come in late from somewhere else. and okay. >> yeah. a flight from new york to hear could be delayed now, right? that could cause a
5:05 am
ripple effect for a flight that's going to say hawaii, just for example. yeah, you never know. and we'll keep our eye on that. i guarantee there's going to be some kind for no doubt the planes aren't here for cause or delayed somewhere else. >> everybody, everybody stuck in a lurch. thank you very much, sara. >> all right. we're also following obviously the very latest of the power outages here, as we're hoping for a day or 2 of recovery. now that the rains are beginning to back off at least for thursday and friday. but here's where pg and e has there outages at the moment. this is their outage map and you can see on the peninsula. we're not looking at too bad of a situation up near san francisco. it gets a little more intense as you work your way down south on the peninsula. and then when you get to the south bay, obviously, that's where you're seeing a lot more in the way of outages. the worst of it is in the santa cruz mountains. that's those areas in yellow and orange. as for the santa clara valley, the most populated part of the south bay, you're looking at widespread minor outages. so hopefully pg e will get a chance to start knocking some of these out as the morning progresses. another been
5:06 am
working overnight. we are still looking at tens of thousands of customers without power bay area wide. as for the east bay will slide the maps there. and just give you a quick overview. the majority of these outages look to be out in the east bay valleys right along your 6.80, corridor between walnut creek and concord. looks like we've got a pockets of outages, their neighborhood by neighborhood really. and then for the north bay is pretty sporadic as well. that's some good news for you as much as we saw the thunder and lightning yesterday, it didn't seem to do much to knock out power, firmer in sonoma and napa and solano counties. so at least on that front, we're doing okay. hopefully, as i said with the with the drier conditions for thursday and friday that will give pga good head start in getting a lot of these outages restored before that big around comes on saturday. time now 506, in san francisco. yesterday was a busy day for public works crews more than a dozen big trees. >> fell over, including one
5:07 am
that fell on the roof of a muni bus. look at this. and passengers were in there. there was a flattened car by this said big tree that fell down near union square. look at that, rachel gordon with san francisco public works says that crews raced from one scene to another trying to stay on top of all the trees that toppled. >> he's doing field were whether it's the engineers looking at the slides. it's the street cleaners. it's a tree crews. everyone is working overtime right now to make sure that san francisco's be taken care of. >> and public works says it's important to steer clear of crews that are working for everybody's safety. i actually ran inoo a guy that came up from southern we've been called up here to help with outages in and trees. all that mutual aid coming in at all, right in the east bay, eastbound ignition valley road was closed between civic drive and tim place because of a tree that knocked out power lines. and this is some of the video. the repair work here is those lines were dangling jtst inches off the pavement.
5:08 am
>> p g says multiple polls had to replaced while traffic was rerouted. around that main road. >> they're just trying to get back to his place real quick. and it took like an extra 30 minutes, very bad. >> yeah. and one of our reporters was out there and she says it took it her nearly 11 and a half minutes to go half a mile on that detour route pg wrapped up their work at about midnight. the road should be open again for this morning's commute. but no word on if it actually is. we're still looking for that confirmation 11 and a half minutes from i r half a mile half a mile run a mile and 10 slow. >> 508, right now. and the south bay people in several neighborhoods still without power because of the storms in yes, we've been talking about that. we've got kron four's will tran standing by live in the south bay with more on what's a very dark morning for many will. >> it's a very dark morning. and james, we're coming up to probably close to 24 hours for people in parts of the south bay, including here in
5:09 am
campbell. they do not have any lights on in their house. in fact, nearly 7. can you turn off my camera light just to show you look at this. this neighborhood is in complete darkness. okay. turn it back on. how unfair is this? so i'm in this neighborhood in campbell just off us 17, but we will zoom in and you can see lights off in the distance. it looks a little bit closer than what it is. but you know how the grid system works. let me show you some video. this is because of a combination of things. yes, we saw the winds, the storm, but it did you at all those things. it did bring down a transmission tower and then started in willow glen neighborhood, which is a few miles from this location. and then it started to trickle all the way to campbell. all together. we're talking thousands of customers all over the bay area. but the hardest hit area is in the south bay. so a lot of people waking up grumpy without their coffee, but they still have to go to work. hopefully, you

know, they have to figure out how to open up the garage without power. we take that for granted. we will get reaction. pga, neither desperately trying to restore power. but it's going to be a little hard guys. you can probably see. i was waiting to come out to me doing my report. you can clearly see here comes the rain again. back to you. >> the start of it. all right. like that off and on check back with you later. we'll we're going to take a quick break here. 5.10, but still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, the department of justice is conducting an investigation now after potentially classified documents were found in a private office that president joe biden once used when he was vice president. plus, governor gavin newsom warning californians that the storm isn't over yet. why rough weather conditions may be the new norm for the weeks ahead. like we got it out. more of that weather ahead of us on into the weekend and next week. >> we are about to catch a breather, though, after some steady showers today. tomorrow is going to bring a break from the rain. expect most of our

>> it's 5, 13 17 people have died across the state in these dangerous winter storms that we've had. and we have an update from governor newsom as he toured damage in santa cruz county. the relentless rain has pounded the historic pier in capitola really ripped it apart. there are mounds of mud in the streets, flooded businesses some beyond repair and more rain on the way. so the governor now giving a warning. >> we're not out of the woods. we expect these storms to continue at least through the 18th of this month. expect a minimum 3 more these atmospheric rivers and different shapes and forms. >> the governor said that he is in close contact with the white house to ensure california gets the federal help. it needs to rebuild. emergency shelters are open all over california, including right here in the bay area, people who had to leave their homes because of the storms or people who are unhoused.
5:15 am
>> well, the state's division of flood management says that it's handed out nearly 400,000 sandbags since the start of the atmospheric rivers. some areas like lake dell fell in alameda county are currently doing flood control releases to try and manage the high water levels. there. and officials say that managing those high water levels and atmospheric rivers may be something california might have to get a custom to thanks to climate change. >> recent storms demonstrate the importance of the critical storm. water wastewater infrastructure in the bay area. and the systems were designed decades ago. long before we knew about climate change with climate change, we're expecting more droughts, more intense storms like we've seen over last 2 weeks. there are major investments occurring at the state and federal levels. so we're better prepared for these extreme storms as they become the new normal with climate change. >> and as for california's ongoing drought, state reservoirs are right now at 81% of their average sturridge awful for this time of year. but that's still below where they need to be. however,
5:16 am
progress is being made. of course, every storm that comes through continues to add to the lake level lake oroville, for instance, is at about 85% of average and that 46% of total capacity. the water levels are up. 85 feet since december first. so there is progress. >> yeah. let's get reserve where we are making progress to continue with that until what time, john, the out. so we're still going to see it through around 05:00pm today. the heaviest of staff is going to wait till after the morning commute. so even though we do have some decent rainfall this morning. >> the heavier pockets will be right in the middle of your workday here really between 10 and 4, 10:00am and 04:00pm. so mother nature is working for us on our morning commutes. it's wet out there. it is definitely slick. but downpours there or not, it is just widespread light to moderate showers. currently, you can see some of our heaviest those moderate showers sitting right over san jose right now after some of
5:17 am
the downpours just saw yesterday. you're going to look at that and say, yeah, that's some good rain, but i'm not scared of it. you're looking outside all across the bay area and some lighter green, some deeper greens. this is a nice soaking rain this morning. it will continue over several hours. so you will see the possibility of some spots getting a little water logged some ponding water on roads, your risk of hydroplaning is definitely concern today, but really stressing that today is bringing much less of the inclement nature to the weather than what we saw yesterday. richmond center fell bridge bay bridge, golden gate bridge, all of its wet this morning. so do take it slower. and we've got a lot more rain sitting to the west of us. that's all going make its way in, especially as we reach the middle of the day. so we're in a bit of a mixture of the system that we saw before in the atmospheric river that we have again taking shape to the west of us. it's going to be an interesting occurrences next few hours. so we are seeing some moisture pushing into the bay area. but we do have a high pressure ridge to the south. that's going to push that line of showers only
5:18 am
briefly to the north of us. that means tomorrow we dry out. this is a very of short-lived drying period, but do take advantage of it. tomorrow is the best day to be getting outside. after that. the line pushes in and by friday later in the day, especially we'll start to see rainfall pushing through this line of showers on friday. could pack a bit of a punch and we will be seeing it continuing on into saturday with widespread and at times heavy rain for saturday. heavy snow in the sierra during this time and continuing on into sunday monday and tuesday of next week. we'll continue to bring this active pattern too. let's time it out. hour by hour. moderate showers through the morning. our heaviest of rainfall gets here after the morning commute as well and down mostly around 10 to 11:00am heavier showers continue into the early afternoon specially for the north bay were flooding. risk is the greatest and then winds down just before your evening commute. we're going to be wet for your evening commute, but at least not super rainy during the commute itself.
5:19 am
rainfall estimates today we're going to see lighter stuff to the south heavier stuff to the north. some north bay mountains could see 3 to 4 inches. that's still a lot for our north bay neighbors, but definitely not as much of a concern southward as we make our way into the weekend and next week, whole lot more rain ahead of u.s.. 3 to 10 inches of it over the course of the next week. flood advisories do continue north of the golden gate and north of the cartoon as south of those areas, though we are out of flood advisory territory. we still do have some high wind watches through 07:00pm. these winds today could gust as high as 50 to 60 miles per hour. a mountain tops generally calmer than we have been, though. temps today in the 50's tomorrow is not just our dry day, but also our most mild day. we'll get a bit of sunshine. we'll see a few 60's. definitely capitalize on tomorrow. getting outside enjoying this break before more rain into the weekend and into next week. >> rain. all right, john, thank you for that. well, john talked about it. the slick conditions, the high winds definitely driving slow today's what you should do. 28

tipped over and just landed smack dab on the roof of the house. and you can see this and luckily sandy peters and her husband say nobody was hurt. they didn't notice anything suspicious about the trees in recent days. so in just that just shows you how quickly something like this can happen. the grounds over statue a saturated and before you know, it timber. >> if you think it might over now is the time to before does it's a lot. i mean. sure. and pay for it after it was over, but not before. but hey, it looks like it's going to lower against all. >> well, let's wait for insurance to cover all wiped out. this is a tough call. because here's the thing is the peters estimate that these damages could be about $30,000 to repair at this point. they're just happy that they do have insurance and that nobody was hurt. it is 5.41. we'll be right back.

5:45 am
comes out just like in a movie. and you saw that yesterday as the yeah. we'll see what we're in store for today with i saw some people posting like i don't even know what to expect because it would be downpour in one moment. and then, yeah, like heaven, believe the next. so yesterday was a day that literally brought it all to us. we saw flash flood warnings in san francisco across the east bay. >> as those heavy downpours just work their way through right there in the early afternoon. we did fortunately calm things down for most areas, at least last night in this morning. we do have some light showers to moderate showers out there. but today is not going to bring that convective activity. that storm building like yesterday did. so it's going to be much more widespread rain, but it's going to be on the chillier side behaving a little bit more. you look outside at san francisco. we do have light showers there currently you can see the radar certainly lit up its mostly those lighter hues of green indicating light showers right now. if you see offshore the peninsula, we do have this heavier pocket right here. these are moderate showers. we don't have any lightning associated with them. no hail
5:46 am
either. so it will be seeing an uptick in rainfall here momentarily in the southern end of the peninsula in the south bay. but again, nothing necessarily to be scared of. just slow it down out there. at this point. we've all got a lot of practice driving in the rain. you know how to do it. just take it slow or north coast, seeing some snowfall. the sierras going to see a dose of heavy snow today travels up. they're not necessarily ideal, but it's also not necessarily the to be getting up there winds a little bit calmer than they have been. we are seeing in future cast here. widespread rain today. tomorrow we're catching our breather before this line of showers drops into the bay. mostly later on friday, it's looking like after that into saturday and sunday. continuing to see showers. that trend continues into monday and tuesday of next week. so we're still very active ahead of us. just have a little breather tomorrow, today's rainfall really picks up after 10:00am. that's when we'll see our heavier pockets across the bay area between 10:00am and 04:00pm today, the
5:47 am
north bay, you'll have some of our most widespread heaviest of rainfall that will result in chances of flooding for areas like marine sonoma and napa and solano counties specially up in the lake and mendocino counties much less and on that potential for the south bay. we'll see showers moving out mostly right around 05:00pm. so your evening commute tonight, roadways will be wet for it, but at least rainfall starts to die down in tomorrow. looks like a good and dry one, fearing the outdoor activities you want to do. today's rainfall estimates around a 3rd of an inch for the south bay. where's the north bay? still some pretty impressive numbers. 3 to even 5 inches of rain in the north bay hills that still roads aren't flooding risk north of the golden gate. as for the rest of the forecast of the weekend and next week, adding up to around 3 to even 10 inches of rainfall for the north bay mountains in the santa cruz mountains. so still a whole lot of rain ahead of us. as we saw multiple atmospheric rivers in sight, north bay still under flood watches. this is north of the golden gate in kharkiv as the rest of the bay area sitting it out today. high wind
5:48 am
watches through 07:00pm. we're still breezy, especially on mountain passes and on bridges, high temps will be in the 50's today. tomorrow is not just ater dry state of the forecast. it's smiled. we'll see a few 60's for your thursday. your best day to get outside. definitely capitalize on if you're getting a little cabin fever from staying inside so much the weekend will bring daytime highs falling back to the 50's and rainfall returning as well. also see into next week. great job. thank you for that update. will traffic has been much lighter today? >> then we were yesterday. if you are hopping on 24 right now, just a little slight delay as you're traveling to but it's going to take the 14 minute to make it from wanna creek down into 5.80, 13 8. 85 80 still pretty light at this hour. but again, no major rain out there. so around 10 o'clock, make sure you watch that commute like john just mentioned, traveling into the city this morning. 12 minutes may so that fremont street exit. so travel is moving
5:49 am
along the major hot spots like we had yesterday, 8.80, to 1, 0, 1, 13 minutes as you're heading across towards the peninsula. we do see some rain in the air. people are traveling through it again and not really slowing people down too much. so you need to make sure you slow yourself down as you're traveling out there while on 1, 0, 1, 36 minutes. 85 park to no major delays. you start to build just a bit along 101. there 2.37. don't see any major accidents. and along 17 this morning, i don't see any closures. 8.80, stanley down towards milpitas today about 24 minutes. and if you're traveling along 5.80, just past livermore, you're seeing delays. but as you're making your way to hayward, no issues along 6.88. you're moving at the limit. darya. james, back to you. thanks. a lot 5.49 and outages in san francisco. all right after their video surfaced of an art gallery owner. >> hosing down and an house woman in front of his
