>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> well, we have some breaking news this morning. major flight delays all across the country because a computer system problem with the f a a a live look at sfo this morning. according to flightaware, there are currently more than 1100 flights and delayed nationwide. well, the faa said in a statement to kron 4 that they're working to restore system that sends messages to pilots. no word yet on how long it's going to take to restore that system. we do have a crew, however, heading sfo and we'll get a live update from them coming up at 4.30, a lot of people waking

up this morning trying to figure out well, they have a flight later on in the day or our flight going to be delayed as the morning continues to go on whether john something different, not impact to those flights. really? it's that faa system, right? yeah. and you s doesn't have any overnight flight. so it remains to be seen what the impact is going to be there for flights out of sfo. so we will be keeping you updated on that for sure. >> whereas weather should not be contributing at least a time too many delays over the next few minutes at sfo later on this morning, we could see things changing a bit because we are going to see our heaviest of rainfall for the day smack dab in the middle of the day, comparatively. pretty quiet right now where we're sitting right now in the bay area. you do have a few low clouds sitting out there overall, some light showers to making their way across the bay area. pockets of heavier rainfall. just a few spots in the upper elevations of napa county really most of the rest of us just consistently on the

weather side. this is getting a bridge is wet. they bridgerton center fell bridge golden gate in the san mateo bridge. all wet with slight showers on them. you can see if we zoom out across the region that we do have more rainfall about to make its way through so much like yesterday, much like the past 2 weeks. we're going to keep you updated as the showers to roll over head. the nature of today's rainfall is much different than what we saw yesterday, though. it's going to be a widespread moderate soaking rain through the morning. so nothing super super heavy. those turned torrents of rain we saw yesterday associated with thunderstorms not going to be much of an issue today. we'll see our heaviest of showers likely between the hours of 10:00am in around 04:00pm today. heaviest of rainfall near the coastline in the north bay. and you will have some heavy spots out there, like i said compared to yesterday with that thunderstorm development today is just more widespread. a little bit more spread out. that is actually been a good news. showers diminish pretty quickly this evening after 05:00pm really start to see him moving out a few spots in

the north bay holding on to him. but that's about it. and then tomorrow we're catching a nice, big break from the rainfall. thursday looks to be our of this forecast. friday starts that way with showers pushing in later on. flood watches do continue for the north bay on through tomorrow. the rest of us taking a breather from them. as for winds, not as significant. a factor is what we had been looking at. so all this looks just a little bit better. still a wet day, but that risk a very much so downsides of all this rainfall is a little bit diminished for most of us north bay. you have the highest chance of significant rainfall today. heaviest rainfall in the north bay and the heaviest of it all at all. mostly in the middle of the day there between 10:00am and 04:00pm things winding down really quickly into the late afternoon, right? all right, john, thank you for that will hopefully on the roads. hopefully these are very much better. >> 7 minutes traveling into the city maze to that fremont street exit. how about the san

mateo bridge? 80 to 101. a 13 minute ride heading across towards the peninsula. a richmond center fell bridge a few lot of droplets on the land. so 8 minutes there and the golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls about 20 minutes. well, the type used now 04:00:03am. and in san francisco tuesday storm brought a very busy day for public works. crews yet more than a dozen large trees toppling over, including one that actually crushed the roof of a muni bus that was full of passengers. kron four's theresa stasi was there and has those details from a crash cart to a flattened transit bus. the soggy streets of san francisco proving too much to bear. >> as root systems gave way and trees toppled down. this was the same near union square where a large limbs snapped. it collided with a crowded muni bus. >> about 1200 trees and tree limbs. tree branch is big trees coming and roads want be

someone cars. thankfully, no serious injuries at all, which is our number one priority is to try to keep people safe. rachel gordon was san francisco's public works, says that crews raced from one scene to another trying to stay on top of the trees weakened by the recent flurry of storms. >> he's doing field were whether it's the engineers looking at the slides. it's the street cleaners. it's a tree crews. everyone is working overtime right now to make sure that san francisco's be taken care while crews worked residents watched. >> surprise to buy all of the damage that they were this summer. expect crazy storm >> and say, i've lived here for a year and a half and i come here growing up my entire life. but i've never heard a thunderstorm here my entire life. and it was thunder. lightning like shaking the building. and there's never thunderstorm here. it was crazy. olivia, they're talking about that storm hit came in on tuesday. >> and how ferocious it was. a

plea from public works crews. they are asking everyone to please be mindful of the barrier tape that they put up and they they do that to create a safe space and allow the crews to safely do their job and to keep the public back so that they don't get injured as the crews are trying to clear the same here in san francisco, theresa kron, 4 news. well, it wasn't just trees falling over in san francisco. just one example of flooding in the area. >> cesar chavez at bayshore in vermont. this was the scene yesterday morning just before crews arrived to begin clearing that area. some drivers are still trying to cross the road there. and tuesday store bought damage to the peninsula in south san francisco. you had strong winds ripping the roof off of an apartment building that happening early tuesday morning, leaving 2 homes exposed to the stormy weather. fortunately, the rain didn't let just a bit later that afternoon, making it a lot easier to get outside and check for any damage.

>> 2 hits and upstairs actually sustain some water damage, relocate those residents to flee back to a shelter told us. >> well, a few miles away in pacifica, yet big waves continue to crash ashore right near sharp. our beach. the storm surges pushed and onto beach boulevard force in the city to be part of it. so close part of that crews are busy tuesday trying to clear that road. it's a very big job. and over in san bruno yet to large trees falling on to some power lines behind a 7.11 store. the power stayed on a cruise at turn it off in order to remove those trees. also, you've dozens of homes in the nearby roland wood neighborhood that were without power for a second day. early monday, trees fell on a power line in that community. hey, there's still no estimate for when that power might return. 17 people have now died in california during these dangerous winter storms. that

number came during an update from governor gavin newsom. has he toward the damage, don, in santa cruz county on tuesday as kron four's justine waltman tells us newsom visit to see how that beach community is now recovery. >> we're so this place is so >> with more rain on the way, governor gavin newsom gave a dire warning during a state storm update in capitola. we're not out of the woods. we expect these storms to continue at least through the 18th of this month. expect a minimum 3 more these atmospheric rivers and different shapes and forms. >> the relentless rain has already ripped apart the historic pier in capital brought mounds of mud to the streets and flooded businesses and shops some beyond repair. the governor got a firsthand look at the damage to this beach front community. >> and also warned wild weather patterns will be the new normal in the state and

had a stern safety message for all californians, but a big part. >> what everybody is mindful to take seriously the orders or recommendations coming from law enforcement. the city of capital has declared a local state of emergency. president biden declared an emergency for the entire state over the weekend. >> the governor said that he is in contact with the white house to ensure that california gets the federal help that it needs to rebuild in the newsroom. i'm justine waldman. kron. 4 news. >> well, emergency shelters are open all over california, including right here in the bay area for folks who have been forced from their homes because of the storm or people who were always and house. you can find a list of those locations over on our website at kron 4 dot com. well, the state department of water resources provided an update tuesday to the flood mitigation efforts happening across california that division of flood management says he's handed out nearly 400,000 sandbags since the

string of atmospheric rivers began. >> some recent storms demonstrate the importance of the critical storm. water wastewater infrastructure in the bay area. and the systems were designed decades ago. long before we knew about climate change with climate change, we're expecting more droughts, more intense storms like we've seen over last 2 weeks. there are major investments occurring at the state and federal levels. so we're better prepared for these extreme storms as they become the new normal with climate change. >> all right. as california's ongoing drought, state reservoirs are at 81% of their average storage level for this time of the year. so still below where they need to be, however, progress is being made. lake oroville, for example, there 85% average and 46% capacity. the water levels up. 85 feet since december. 1st. we'll take a look at some of the damage the storm brought across the bay area in the east bay. it wasn't just

rain falling but also abre shower of hail yesterday afternoon. you can see here the hill quickly accumulating on the back deck of the home. the hill was pea sized. fortunately, there are no reports of damage from that hill. so that's some good news ear. and over in oakland, a huge tree crashed onto this home. this is around 2.30, yesterday morning. the homes on skyline boulevard about a mile and a half of skyline high school. the family says there are several trees down in the area, but they are being told and may have to wait until at least friday to start cleaning up. they say it is difficult to get cranes and heavy equipment because there's so much demand right now for the equipment needed to remove trees as well as debris. we're also monitoring power outages across the bay area. a live look at the pg e outage map. you can see a bunch of smaller outages affected customers all across the bay area. pretty looks like most of the bay area is impacted. you have multiple yellow and orange areas in the

south bay affecting hundreds, if not thousands of customers. we're going to keep you updated throughout the morning on this map. still to come on the kron, 4 morning news, stormy weather closes down streets in the east bay. we're going to take a look at what streets were impacted by this. plus, the department of justice. they are investigating after potentially classified documents. >> were found in a private office that president biden wants to use. we'll be right back with more on that story after the break.

>> well, happening now in the sierra palisades tahoe bracing for 12 to 18 inches of snow this morning at their resort base and at the top, as much as 2 feet of new snow. new video from of their shows. the conditions here yesterday, the ski resorts as they had 7 feet of new snow since the start of the year. they're also expecting gusty winds reaching up to 80 miles an hour. and in the north bay, the winter storms have led to a big loss for napa valley winery. a 275 year-old oak tree was uprooted monday at the site. to me winery in saint alina. the wineries residents say one of these president says that the tree have been a very big part of their history and lots of parties and picnics or held under its branches. now, the tree had also withstand earthquakes and fires over the past centuries, staff members said they are sad. they're

grateful that no one was injured. all right. take a look at this. a lightning strike. one of you can see it. it's like right in the middle of that little a good thing. our screen. but a lightning strike hit the top of the transamerica pyramid in san francisco. this happened around 12, 30 yesterday afternoon. it was captured live during our noon newscast right here on kron 4. yo- might've seen that with noelle bellow. now the pair met was not the only skyscraper to get hit yesterday. well, a viewer shared this video with lightning strikes hitting sutro tower and san francisco as well. so lightning was all across the bay area. john, for me is i leaving the house yesterday and the lightning was coming down lightning strikes on my instagram sully. i was out there taking pictures from like i covered area. >> and got one on the posted on my instagram, as i said, but it was really cool to see.

yeah, the same kind of scary because that thunder every couple. second make i don't really know the it's supposed to be like a the percentage of the chance to know that. but stressed right by i mean, yeah, it's like it's more likely than winning the lottery. which we also but yeah, that's why when you want to when you hear that thunder, you definitely want to go indoors. at least a covered place that you are definitely safer where we're sitting out this morning. coit tower looking nice and dry compared to where we have been. we are seeing showers out there across the bay area. lightning thunder is not going to be something you're noticing quite as much today. you could see an isolated shower here and there that produces that. but it is definitely nothing like yesterday. as far as that thunderstorm development coast, widespread light to moderate showers. right now we're seeing that along the bay bridge. the richmond center fell bridge and the golden gate bridge. just some light showers out there moving out across the region. definitely a calmer start to

the day up in the sierra nevada. you want to be heading up into this year. today is a little bit easier to do so. we are going to be looking at conditions today that are wet, but the nature of rainfall, much different wide spread and spread out. we get a little breather from rainfall tomorrow. jet stream pushing it to the north of us. that means thursday going to be sitting it out for the most part friday. we'll see it rushing back in. and by the time we work into saturday and sunday, our next atmospheric river leaving with some heavy rainfall and some deepening snowfall in the sierra nevada. time to get hour by hour. we've got a wet morning. mostly light to moderate showers through the morning. picking up after 10:00am and lasting through 04:00pm. our most widespread and heavy rainfall today after 05:00pm. really starting to see it move out really quickly. then we've got a dry trajectory for the rest of the day on into thursday. rainfall totals today anywhere between a 3rd of an inch to 3 inches of rain in the north bay mountains into the weekend. and next week we had up a whole lot more on top of that flood

watches for only the north bay today and we are seeing some high wind advisories through 07:00pm tonight for most of the bay area. temps today, mostly in the 50's. we are going to be looking at another mild one tomorrow, our dry day and our most mild day of the forecast with highs in the low 60's. then we're back to the 50's and back to the rain for the rest of the forecast. starting late friday on through saturday, sunday, monday and tuesday rain. all right, john, thank you for that. hopefully much easier drive today. 8 minutes into the city right now. maze to that fremont street exit, your san mateo bridge. >> 80 to 1, 0, one, 12 minutes heading across towards the peninsula. a richmond sandra fell bridge tolls to 1, 1, 8, minute drive and the golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls. 20 minutes. >> especially in times like these california needs a warrior in washington. well, progressive democrat katie porter has announced a 2024. but first, the senate. >> her announcement on tuesday comes amid uncertainty that

classified documents found in the washington office space. president joe biden's former institute. it's also getting a lot of reaction capitol hill. washington correspondent reshad hudson joining us. sure. a lot of folks are talking about this. so can you update us or shot? >> hey, we're in a good morning. president biden says he is fully cooperating with the department of justice when it comes to those costs of 5 documents. the president went on to say that he's not even sure what's in those documents that were found in his private office. as president biden wraps up the north american leaders summit in mexico. he's responding for the first time to casa 5 documents. >> being found in a private office he wants used in d c. >> people know i take classified documents, classified information seriously. >> the president confirmed his personal lawyers found the documents and praise them for immediately handing over the papers to the national archives. >> and they did what they should have done. >> president biden says he's

>> well, happening today, the search for the 5 year-old boy missing who was swept away by flood waters and san luis obispo county will resume sometime this morning. crews spent tuesday looking for cow don't in the san marcos creek bed and san miguel near pass a robot has the search was called off due to low

visibility. kyle's father says his wife and his son, they were on their way to school on monday when the roads became very dangerous. he says his wife didn't see any signs of road closures and decided to keep driving the car got stuck in flood waters. that's when neighbors pulled the mother to safety. kyle got swept away. one of the areas hit hardest by the storms is maatta co. that's in santa barbara county. heavy rains there. some urged roadways. look at this trigger mudslides, force evacuation of the entire community here. those evacuation orders as well as shelter-in-place orders for santa barbara county were canceled yesterday afternoon. city officials say more than 100 cars got stuck in flood waters and crews are still assessing the damage to homes and hillsides. all of this comes 5 years after the deadly mudslides that claimed the lives of 23 people and destroyed more than 100 holes. you might remember this happened back in 2018. coming

inclement weather out there. let's an update for today. we're bracing for more storms. yeah, we're seeing more rainfall. i wouldn't call it a stormy day, though. yesterday we saw all those thunderstorms popping up. >> today that potential of severe thunderstorms is significantly less. morrison was spread out soaking rainfall that the bay area's going to handle a whole lot more. then those downpours yesterday you see outside this morning that we do have some relatively clear conditions right now. not to say it's not raining, though. we do have light showers across the region. a few moderate pockets, especially further north in the bay area. and this guy right here watching him closely as we see heavier rainfall pushing on shore here in half moon bay. shortly. bridges are wet. so take it a little bit slower out there on those and a whole lot more rainfall still to be working its way in from the west. so still a very active day-ahead of us will be a consistently rainy morning. so keep you updated on any issues that may present themselves. but the heavy pockets of rain like yesterday, look to be much less of
