>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at >> to 95. this is a day we will remember not just another day and this whole rainy weather raj of storms we've been getting. this one stood out video here from our news room shows lightning striking the top of the transamerica pyramid today is hail pounded the city during an afternoon storm. yeah, pick that same storm hitting twin peaks. >> the tower there in san francisco hammering sutro tower with lightning booming thunder also could be heard and felt across the city rattling windows and jolting residents. tens of thousands of people in the south bay have been left without power after strong winds took down a

transmission tower in san jose. >> and with that, we welcome you and thanks for watching. kron. 4 news at 5, everybody. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. he had the bay area was hit really hard rain when thunder and lightning today as the region. >> is still picking up the pieces from previous storms. it's a lot tonight. we have team coverage following the latest damage and the cleanup efforts across the bay area. kron four's rob nesbitt is in san francisco. >> dan kerman is in san jose, but we will start tonight with kron 4 meteorologist brittany begley who is standing by at the weather center with a look at what happened and what's to come, brittany. yeah. when thunder roars go indoors, that's really been the theme today. we're still watching lingering showers. that's going to be the theme for the next couple of hours. >> but overall, we're getting a break compared to what we had earlier today. but take a look. this is tower at promise. you it was just there showing those dark conditions and what are really going to be watching right now is radar for the rest of the evening. i am noticing up to the north near santa rosa was so watching the potential of rain and thunderstorms as we fast-forward futurecast for,

you can see even at santa rosa, we're going continue to watch those weather conditions for you. but overall, the rest of the area is finally getting that break. you can see around 10 o'clock that's going to move out. what will continue to watch despite the fact that a lot of things have expired is this. we have a high surf warning until 2 o'clock in the morning. i'm in pacifica. we lost power this morning. i don't know about you, but it's still a good reminder to stay off. coastal rocks, avoid state beaches, avoid that surf zone and never turn your back to the ocean. now, temperatures right now as we speak, we're looking at not bad. we're at 55. nobody can see santa rosa. 55, but really it's going to be those conditions, whether the rain we're watching for again, that potential of thunderstorms. i think that that part is going to die down. but what i really want to focus on is your morning commute because of the potential for rain. i think from the 06:00am all the way to 11. we'll see rain all day. it's not going to be as bad as what we had today, but i still want to make sure that we prepare right now for you. so your wake-up planner showing you tomorrow. san francisco, just a little bit warmer today

compared to our tomorrow compared to today, but it's really that rain in the morning. we'll continue to watch is still a busy day. all eyes on santa rosa, not to mention a portion of 80 is shut down in the mountains. we're show you a live look at the snowy mess in the sierra. coming up next. all right, brittany lot going on in san francisco. strong wind and rain knocked a tree down onto a muni bus. >> at the corner of stockton and center streets today. this is video from citizen app. several trains had to be rerouted because of the incident set. fire says one injury was reported. and here's another flooding video. this one out of the mission district in san francisco, a viewer sent does set. >> this a little earlier today. it was still raining and all these cars driving in water. >> and san francisco's richmond district firefighters rescued a couple after a live wire and tree came crashing down on their vehicle. video here courtesy of the citizen app. it happened on fulton street and 19th avenue right where golden gate park is.

crews say the sun was blown out and the couple state in the car, which is what you should do and wires are involved. they waited to be rescued. strong winds knocked down dozens of trees in san francisco today. over town. kron four's. rob nesbitt joins us now live with a look at that. >> the worst of the damage, rob. >> vicki and grant clear skies right now in san francisco. but it was a very different look. earlier today. flash flood warnings going off on cell phones and trees coming down onto >> mother nature packed a hard punch tuesday afternoon. you can see the proof of that at the corner of stockton and sutter and san francisco where tree came toppling down onto a muni feet on us, taking down power lines and bringing traffic to a halt in parts of union square and chinatown. onlookers tapping photos and videos of the damage shocked at just how strong the winds got. according to sfmta, no one was injured when the tree came down. just one of the

many damages san francisco firefighters were called to, according to captain jonathan baxter. we have had a lot of trees down. a lot of power lines down. some of those actually going on top of vehicles. we've been very fortunate not to see. >> the trees going into homes in throughout san francisco. we don't know any actual major injuries associated to any of the storm related incidents is. captain baxter says the effects of this atmospheric river in the city were noticeable during the early morning hours. winds blowing debris and garbage cans into roadways waking up courtney hurley and her family in the russian hill neighborhood. the winds were really, really strong. it was kind of like slamming into the window and just making a lot of banging >> but you wake up to for sure. keep you up for at least like an hour last week, mayor london breed urge residents to avoid calling 9-1-1 for non emergency situations. >> captain baxter says people seem to have listened by instead calling 3, 1, 1, making it easier for firefighters, paramedics and police to do their jobs effectively. a lot of these

that, dan. >> well, one of those distribution poles you can see right behind me, it's right over there. and that's just one of 3 that came down. in addition to transmission tower, which i told you about as well. and as a result, you have a lot of people in the dark with no time estimate when that power is going to be turned back on. >> utility crews have been in this section of willow, glen, near lincoln and loan us since early tuesday morning after a falling tree led to a chain reaction that cut power to businesses and residents in the area. >> when i got here, everything was dark and often we couldn't turn on computers are doing the things. david wyatt owns a business in the area that sells and services pressure, washer, equipment, never anything like this at all. this all began in the middle of the night when a tree brought down this transmission tower on street. >> the lines connected to it ended up rringing down or damaging 3 distribution poles

and 2 transformers along lincoln avenue. he wants restore power to our customers as quickly as possible as you can see. >> the damage is very extensive, but that's why we've brought in additional support. we have a dozens of employees out contract crews and the joint support helping clear out the damage and restore power to customers. restoring power sooner than later would be great, especially for businesses in the area. we can do anything. we fix cars we can at to willow. glen. >> damage cars, some just arriving are just sitting. if i get back in business on friday will be awesome. but like i said, i'm already looking out looking for generators pg and e says the transmission tower doesn't have to be replaced to restore power. but these distribution poles and the lines associated with them do so. the trees have to be removed. >> then we have to come in and safely remove the damaged equipment. once that equipment is out, we can bring in the new polls and get rid of those downed wires that were damaged

and any other pieces of equipment. we had 2 transformers that came down as well. >> now there's no estimated time exactly when power will be restored in this area. but pg e says crews will be working through the night live in san jose. dan kerman kron. 4 news. all right, dan? yeah. getting the power back on sooner than later would be great. >> thank you, dan kerman reporting for us from willow. glen in san jose. >> across the state, 17 people have died so far in all the storms that according to governor newsom who held a news conference in capital santa cruz county today, he surveyed the damage there after the coastal town was hit really hard last week by that atmospheric river. one of them and is he knows the governor. we're not out of the woods yet. >> we expect these storms to continue at least through the 18th of this month. we expect a minimum 3 more these atmospheric rivers and different shapes and forms depending on different parts of the state. the magnitude of

this is not isolated to smaller communities hit. he's scaled across the largest state in our union. >> newsom also praised the resilience of communities that have been hit hardest by the storm saying >> that spirit will be needed again in the days ahead. >> storm also shut down several major roads in santa cruz, including a portion of highway one. while crews work to remove a logjam of debris from the san lorenzo river highway 17 also shut down yesterday, but now it's back open. this is video of the mudslide that happened on highway 17 yesterday on the southbound lanes near glenwood drive. you can see caltrans. they were working on cleaning the roadways. there to the north bay. now flood and evacuation warnings along the russian river. they have actually been lifted as cresting move just below the 32 foot flood stage level communities in guerneville had been urged to evacuate since last wednesday. but for now, it looks like they're getting a little bit of a break from

that during a typical drive-by. that's all we've got in this entire time. reeves claims that he and his family have been abandoned by the alameda county public works department. >> after he says they've got no response to a major mudslide that came down this hill and onto his property during the storm. >> during a plug hillside came down. i came all the way down into our driveway and we've had to dig ourselves out with our tractorsaand and continue pushing the mud. >> that direction because it keeps coming down from the hillside. the alameda county public works department close palo verde and placed a yellow slide area. sign at the intersection. >> reeves says there's been no help actually clearing the road and protecting his property. >> we called in 3 o'clock new year's day to the county because that's when the hillside broke and and filled this whole area. and we've had 0 response except for them driving by. >> that's that's not true.

we've been out there a number of times. john met lot. junior is the deputy director of the alameda county public works department. >> he says public works. crews have been routinely clearing that stretch of palo verde during these storms. >> we've been clearing that roadway december medlock says the hill is privately owned and that the county is not responsible for baiting the mud from sliding. it's emanating off of private property. >> on the once road, the property, the opposite side of the roadway and probably winding up on his property. the road, however, is county property. >> there is a discrepancy about them being cleared. tyler reeves says there should be no debate about the situation being a hazard endangering his home. >> i understand there's priorities. this is a public safety issue. >> in castro valley has menu kron. 4 news. and to the north

that stranded. but we have that winter weather warning and the sea are dangerous to impossible. conditions shut down at colfax and going to stay that way. we're going watch that area at least till tomorrow. so in the mountains we're watching again, the dean just driving conditions were not topped one expert coming up the next 30 minutes. happening now, stormtracker 4 thunderstorms right now as we speak just north of santa rosa near windsor in which we fast for the clock. if you live santa rosa area, if you live in the windsor area, we have the potential for showers for the next couple of hours. but the bulk of the storm, those thunderstorms, what we're watching for you, it's happening right now. i will update you about every 15 minutes now on a fast for tomorrow. on a plan your day because your morning commute could be rough. going to see more rain. not as intense as we've seen the past couple of days, but we're still going to see the rain. i'm not seeing a potential for thunderstorms, but as we take a look at 7 o'clock, you can see if you live in the santa rosa area. you're going start to see more of the rain coming down as we fast for that into rush hour around 8 o'clock. that's potential. still gonna hold steady 10. 45 potential for

mexico after the white house said a dozen or so documents with classified markings were discovered. >> inside his washington, d.c. office at the penn biden center all stemming from his time as vice president when vice president biden left office, it looks like he took classified documents with him and he was very critical. >> of president trump. republicans quickly comparing the discovery to the august search of former president trump's mar-a-lago home 1, 100's of top secret documents were seized by fbi agents. i had a small number of boxes in storage at mar-a-lago, guarded by secret service and my people and everybody. i mean, it's safe at the time biden called trump's decision to keep those records, quote, irresponsible today, former president trump writing on truth. social quote. why didn't the justice department announced the highly classified documents found in the biden office before the election? the biden documents were found november second, just 6 days before the midterm election. the white house says
