7:00 am
>> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> all right. good morning. thank you so much for joining us on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. it is sunday december, the 8th and our top story. communities across the bay area are continuing to see damage this morning after a powerful storm moved through over the overnight and more severe weather is on the way. we've got our team is covering for you this by covering the situation for you this morning with camila barco in the east bay. she's taking a look at the cleanup and damage efforts happening that unfolded there this morning. let's check in first with meteorologist dave spahr, though he's tracking
7:01 am
the movement and timing of this weather system. >> hey, good stephanie. good morning, everybody. and we are now tracking the lack thereof rain this morning. it's a nice little break. the shot that i have for you want make it out. the moon kind of comes in and out of the shot from the cloud cover. now we have a lot of service moisture. no kidding. so that's going to actually play into the forecast for today. in other words, if we did not have all this rain, we probably was saying variable cloudy temperatures around 60 and so forth. but because of all this moisture that's going to keep the cloud cover around a little bit. so keep that in mind. when you hear the forecast, let's start with all of that updates and everything. this is much the same. we've got a flood watch everywhere. that's again until tuesday because we have a series of new storms coming our way. the wind advisory has changed a little bit. this was supposed to go to 1 o'clock. you can see solano county sticking out there. that's the sacramento office. so the monterey office, the covers u.s., has pulled that. i suspect the reason why they did as are going to have to come back later on in re issue. a new one for tonight.
7:02 am
we do looking for some more winds like you had last night. one on for tonight. again, kind of same time, time period as well. there's a look at the current winds were in the single digits getting into the teens a little bit. they're continuing from the south. so we have a lot of mild temperatures around, not a lot of mercury movement. there's the space that i speak up now, if again, if we didn't have all or moisture at the surface, the skies open up nicely. but today going to keep it on the mostly cloudy side. but a couple of raise a son. that's something kind of new for us as we take a break in the lower left-hand corner. that's the storm just waiting for its cue this evening as we get to around 8 to 10 o'clock or so temperature check for you were in the mid 50's very mild by january standards. in fact, the snow levels are still somewhat high and tahoe. we'll be talking more about that as well. the fog cast because of the breezy conditions. we can keep the surface fog away. it looks like. but here comes back again with the next storm system. and then yet a new one happening into tuesday as well. for today. we'll call it kind of mostly cloudy, but you might catch some rays of sun this morning. get done what
7:03 am
you've got to get done today. you clean things out. prepare for the next storm do tonight. i'll have more on that coming up a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. dave. >> now to another big story we're following for people had to be rescued in castro valley after a large tree fell on top of their house kron four's. camila barco is live for us in castro valley with a look at all that camilla. >> yeah. well, stephanie, that strong storm system caused this tree right behind mount. think you can see because it's too dark out here caused a big tree to fall on top of a home. i'm gonna try to zoom in for you guys to show you what i'm looking at again is pretty dark out here. and we just noticed crews actually arrive to the scene. a guest pick up some of this mess. but if you look very closely, you can see that tree on top of the home. still here after it fell yesterday afternoon on this home. you're taking a look at some video from yesterday seen alameda county fire department says that around 04:00pm this tree fell on top of this home. they had to rescue one person
7:04 am
who was trapped in society tran. they took that person to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries. but unfortunately, 2 adults and now for children. our dis placed at the tree is still on top of this home. we just quickly spoke to a neighbor right now who tells me that this tree brought down the and unfortunately took the power out. the people who are living do not have po as of this morning. again, this happened at 04:00pm yesterday when we were experiencing that strong source storm system past to do the bay area. and stephanie, this is just one example of how powerful these have been here in the bay area. last week we saw plenty of flooding. we did see some downed trees and now we're seeing this here this morning. >> we are expected to see another storm system passed by later tonight and going into this new workweek. so right
7:05 am
now we are taking a break from that rain. it is pretty dry out here in castro valley again, be taking a live look out here at the scene. it's not raining a pretty dry out here right now is that window of opportunity to prepare for this next storm system. yesterday we saw some people actually preparing for some potential flooding we are expected to see some rain and possibly some strong winds in the next few hours, maybe possibly tonight and going into this new work week. i'll send it back to you. camila. thanks you so much for that live perspective there. and i'm sure will be able to see more as the sun starts to rise up over that area. >> and of course, we are seeing some more damage across the north bay overnights. this is a car port. well, look at that. that came crashing down in rohnert park. this is on snyder lane around 11, 30 last night. the carr port landed on about 5 from the looks of it. looks like most of the cars might have avoided any serious damage, but still quite a bit
7:06 am
of cleaning up and heavy lifting to do to get that situation taken care of. and in windsor, a driver got stuck on a flooded roadway. just look at that. this is a westside road around 1 o'clock this morning. just another example of why safety officials are warning everyone to be extra careful when they're traveling on the roads today. while we might be seeing a little bit of a break in the rain at this moment. some roadways do remain flooded. we are also seeing more downed trees this camila barco shows talking about one. this was the scene overnight on westside road in forest hill. you can see a large tree line across the entire roadway. there. and as we heard dave also mentioning at the top of the newscast, this could become a common sight as more wind and rain start to sweep across the bay area again over the coming days. and as the ground becomes even more saturated from all that rain, water, we could be seeing even more scenes like this one. this is on west side

road and forest bill, you can see a small mud slide happened overnight that ended up blocking part of at least one lane obstructing traffic. there. an evacuation warning remains in place for people living near the russian river in sonoma county. and let's take a look at a map now showing the affected areas that does stretch from hillsborough to jenner. the river's level is expected to rise higher tonight into tomorrow. anyone below the 40 foot flood level is being asked to get ready to leave at a moment's notice. the advice here is to have your emergency go-bags ready. be sure to include essential medicines and any documents inside that go bag and have a plan for your pets. we're also monitoring power outages across the bay area. it's get a live look now at the pg and e outage map. you can see quite a number of smaller outages affecting thousands of customers all across the bay area. and yop can also see a lot of yellow. there's also
7:08 am
quite a few orange areas on the peninsula and the north bay and each of those little orange dots that you can see on your screen there that indicates up to 5,000 customers there. indyk are experiencing power outages. a reminder that with the increased risk of flooding and downed trees, there's also an increased risk of power outages. so please do have a plan. have, you know, backup flashlights, extra batteries handy. and a tragic. and a tragic end to the search for a missing 19 year-old from pittsburgh. the latest on the case and where police found his body. now the peninsula bic

>> and now taking a live look outside at transamerica pyramid where, you know, it's looking dry right now, but things are about to change probably in the coming hours and days. let's check in now with day for the latest. hey. >> hey, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. yeah, we're getting a nice little break on for today. you know, get what you got to get done outside. prepare for the next round in. it's going to be another rocking week. it looks like ahead. got series of hits will be let you know. we're looking at here. first, a check in with storm tracker for some of this might even be self-generated. and this is something to keep in mind with the sun. joining us as it heats, the atmosphere is going to cause us evaporation. and we do have cold air upstairs, drier, too, but cold air upstairs. so sometimes you can help fill in those clear patches a little bit with new clouds because aloft there is a nice little break in the action as far as winds coming in from the south. that will be the case pretty much as we've experienced over all of this. and the winds really are going to start picking up as until we get to much later for tonight. there's a live shot of the golden gate to get a general idea here. overcast

skies, flags flipped a little bit more like the on shore direction. let's hand it over to future cast for again. opening up those skies a little bit in some selective spots. this is in the afternoon overnight. here it comes. timing appears to start somewhere about say 8 to 10. that's a nice working number. some moderate rain at this point. i don't know if they'll be as much lightning activity with this one is there might be the one on monday night tuesday. we might see some more of that lightning return. potential hail too. and here's the deeper moisture coming in overnight. the heavier rain stopping at about 04:00am or so. you can see the leading edge of that or where it stops starting to filter in through san francisco open line. so the heaviest rain for much of the commute will be concentrated points south east bay peninsula in the south bay contrast with the north bay. and look at that. that's a 6.15, at sunset. but might see the sun come out a little bit for the north bay and maybe san francisco just before we go into darkness and will be yet another batch into monday
7:19 am
night tuesday, handing over the winds. as i mentioned earlier, the wind advisory has been pulled, however, might be reinstated because of this. now, this pops pretty quickly here. the winds kind of build say after midnight, this is 04:00am. and then they drop off pretty quickly. so it may not reach that threshold, but because it's been so stormy, they may least issue something for 6 hours. we're so here's what goes on for the storm monday tuesday, another uptick, again, note, those arrows do pointing due south, we say atmospheric river. yeah, but that means coming from the lower latitudes and for the mountains. that's not the best news. they have a winter storm warning going on. but that means relatively higher elevation snows for this time of year in january. putting this all together for you. mostly cloudy today. mild breaks here and there breezy, enjoy the break. then for tonight. tomorrow we've got rain storms after sunset, heavy rain into monday morning. and then this week we got a morning storms for tuesday. there's a rain brush that happens we take a look at wednesday, thursday and even into friday. in other words,

not or what is going to get it. it looks to be concentrated in the north bay for some of those hits later, which is kind of more traditional a little bit. however, these things can change. and that's something else the weather service is telling people is that, hey, keep in mind that these you just change these lines of rain coming in just a little bit of can make every difference in the world. so these things can change, but it's pretty good for tonight and into monday night of a good hit. all right. temperature check for you for highs scratching near about 60 or lower 60's next couple of days. heavy rain for your monday and then isolated thunder showers. that's the thunder start with storm part. i was talking about tuesday morning even into the morning commute. and after that, it starts to get more dicey and spread out. we'll be talking more about that longer range forecast for you in just a bit. stephanie, thanks very much. dave. >> the body of missing 19 year-old damon lazenby junior. a pittsburgh was found saturday in the east bay not far from where his abandoned car was found. less than a week ago. his family is asking for anyone who knows what happened to please come

and about. we'll be breaking that down a little bit more. so here's a quick check of the storm tracker 4. as you can see, it's got a couple little splotches on it. most of the action, however, remains up in the mountains. the flood watch still with us until tuesday, the wind advisory has been pulled. you can see the tan color way up north and off the central valley. it's a different forecast office but up north, they already posted for monday morning storm reflecting that. so our monterey office will probably be coming out in the next few hours with the package reflecting all of that. the only thing about it is appears that the wind burst is relatively quick. it doesn't last for long so they may not. but do the power issues. we have the they may still do that anyway to issue something. all right. let's go into this fog real quick here today. sunshine's out a little bit. we've got breezy conditions. so the fog doesn't really settle. however, tonight, as we talked about, here comes the rain 8 to 10. yeah. with the fall with it. tomorrow morning, the heaviest rain will be say it's 7 o'clock. a line from san francisco, oakland points
7:31 am
south and north bay. the heavy stuff will be over probably by dawn and getting into the later commute. look at how the moisture departs there. we get a break monday afternoon. again in the north bay and maybe dwwn amid bay. but then in the south bay, it looks like it's still hangs on a bit with rain. putting this into motion. you can see off to the west. a nice break. the thing that's a problem here is all the surface moisture with the cold air aloft. it will fill back up again later on. these are rain totals that are being estimated for these different locations until tuesday. so we're putting monday storm in their monday morning and tuesday morning storm in there north. but you're looking at other 4 inches. these are quick round round back of the envelope estimations, san francisco peninsula. good 4 inches east bay, 3 to 4 south bay at about 3 and even moderate out of 4 to 8. now, that's an interesting point because of the storm systems change their track the little bit that can change every difference in the world. and that's particularly critical. we get to the latter portion of this week will be some favoritism on the rain. here's a look at what the day is.
7:32 am
we've got some rays of sun coming out. essentially the mostly cloudy again, the surface moisture turning somewhat cloudy by 2. and then again after sunset. that's when the rain will start up. we're going to take a look more at the week ahead. coming up in just a bit. 70, thanks very much, dave. >> in the east bay, all the wind and rain is bringing in business for tree arborist and also keeping first responders busy kron four's philippe djegal reports from clayton. >> the sand over here past clients. gold certified arborist alex saturday to remove a pine tree leaning against their fence. but it's the adjacent redwood tree that right? when he arrived on scene. i've never been this scared in my life in the strengthening. when young was, trees dot com noticed the base of the redwood was shifting, signaling a fall was imminent. you're looking at the replay. do the tree. >> flexing under wind gust. see most had the concerned and

obviously the higher elevations look to get more san francisco in the peninsula about 4 inches, 3 to 4 for the east bay, 3 for the south bay, but it really gets deep down south monterey, 4 to 8 and santa cruz county is 6 to 8. perhaps that's again, higher elevations will get that up to mount hamilton are in santa cruz mountains. proper will get more. but even in the valley you what you'll get to copious amounts of moisture with all of this as you've already had, there's the cloudy skies, basically mostly cloudy for much of the day clouds refill and whatever we have that opens up only to make way for the next storm system. so coming up a little bit here will be talking about again, the short term period, but a longer range period because the latter portion of the week while it still does look disturbed an unsettled other some nuances with all that as well. we may get some breaks in that action to stephanie. thanks very much, dave. >> as the next storm system moves in, people across the bay area are preparing yet again for potential flooding. four's gayle ong was in san francisco or some people. there are stocking up on sandbags.
