tv   KRON 4 News at 6am  KRON  January 5, 2023 6:00am-7:00am PST

6:00 am
>> this morning on the kron 4 morning news. the stormy weather turns deadly after a tree falls on the north bay home killing a baby. plus, people had to be rescued from rising flood waters and strong winds damaged buildings and trees falling on roads all across the bay area and we're not done with it yet. there's more rain on the way. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 6. >> good morning. and thanks for waking up with the kron. 4 morning news. this is a special storm edition continuing today from the storm that started yesterday and we're not out of the woods quite yet. no, we're still dealing with the back end of this storm system which is looking to impact the morning commute. we've got full coverage here in just a minute. we'll start, though, in the weather center, right? because this all should be sri starting again with the rain and the wind about now, john.
6:01 am
yeah, it's starting to kick back up for the north bay. you're exactly righnd if you are an early riser this morning already took to the roads, you noticed it was fairly calm out there aside from some strong winds, but the strong winds and now some heavier rainfall pushing right back into the picture. it's calm right now in the east bay hills. your rainfall is set to pick up in about an hour, but the north bay, as where really already seeing it starting to pick up, you can see those lines of showers pushing their way on into the not just the bay area, but the state in general. and we are seeing some pockets of heavier rain in there right now. marine county on up into sonoma county, seeing those areas of heavy rain, especially right up and down highway one. this rainfall accompanied by even stronger winds and also some heavier rain right there in the middle of the morning commute. this is around 07:30am, ahead of us today. right there in the middle of the busiest time of day, some heavy downpours on some of our most use bridges. so watch out for that as we continue to make our way through the morning, we'll see pockets of
6:02 am
heavy rain interspersed by moderate showers all the way into early afternoon. few rolls of thunder in there as well. so this is still continuing to be quite the active morning. chp is done a really good job of keeping roadways as clear as possible. watch out for downed trees down limbs in your neighborhood. flood watch still remains this morning on into the early afternoon. now current temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 50's. i'll be talking more details about exactly what we can expect as we do, make our way through the rest of this forecast. all still to come all right, john, thank you for that. well, we do have a hot spot. this is in seminole. >> westbound 84 eastbound just east of 6.80, all lanes are blocked there. so unfortunately, you can hop on 6.80, as you're traveling this morning because they shut down that connector ramp because of this accident. there. so we've been talking about issues along. 84 for the past few days. just not in this spot. we were talking about this right here near mission boulevard. they shut that whole junction down right now. this is close. so you're going
6:03 am
to have to hop on 5.80, if you're trying to navigate a get around that or already be on 6.80, in continues at up. so again, 84 right here, just east of 6.80, so northbound traveling up. you can hop on 84 and you can't go from 84 on to 6.80, here. definitely navigate. stay away from. that's going to be there for a while. we have high winds across most of our bridges. so dunbar bridge, high winds there, benicia bridge, high winds this morning. i was traveling into the city across the bay bridge had to use both hands on the steering will slow it down 9 minutes. so don't be fooled by the drive. times drive times are light. but the high winds are still there. 13 minutes, 80 to 101 heading across towards the peninsula. our richmond center fell bridge tolls to 1, 1, about 8 minutes here. let's check on our highways 101. heading up. 29 minutes. 85 into menlo park while to 80, we do have some issues along there this morning. 82 not seen any major problems at 8.80, you could see still in the green at the lid. it
6:04 am
limit. so san leandro down towards know pete is going to take about 21 minutes darya. james, eack to you. >> reyna, thank you very much as 603. let's get you updated on the latest with pg and e power outages. of course, a big part of the story that we're dealing with in the wake of yesterday's big rain. so here we've got san francisco, the peninsula, the situation actually getting a little bit better in the city. we started off the morning with more than 6600 customers without power. but the good news is that's gone down now to about 2900. so they've been able to cut that about in half the peninsula right here. you can see we'rb dealing with the most power outages in the entire bay area. all these areas in orange and red indicating 5,000 plus customers without power in these different pockets. when you add that all up this morning, we had more than 41,000 customers without power. but now that's been brought down to about 3400 so good news there. they are making progress. we continue sliding down the peninsula towards the south bay. and the update for santa clara county is the fact that what had been about 16,000 customers without power earlier this morning has now been brought down to about
6:05 am
11,900. so roughly 12,000 customers without power. most of that minor, as you can see, that's what those little green dots indicate. now, let's pull out and head to the east bay. there hasn't been as much in the way of power outages there. that's the good news, especially for the inland east bay, the 60 corridor. but here along the upper east shore freeway that stretch of 85, 80 from about the bay bridge on up to the richmond center fell bridge. you've got all these sporadic pockets of outages in all, about 3400 customers are without power. 34,000 customers are without power here for the entire east bay. lastly, let's stop in the north bay where we're seeing again, a lot of hard hit areas in the higher terrain, the mountains of the north bay marin county, particularly that's where we're seeing a concentration of customers about 22,000 still without power right now, there hasn't been much of an much of an improvement in that number since last night because again, the terrain is a little hard to get to and pg e has to wait for the winds to really died down before they can get on with that work. there's just too much danger with
6:06 am
continuing of trees falling and limbs coming down. the good news is we should have a break tomorrow and of course, later today. so they'll do some good work there. we'll hope for some more updates throughout the day today. but in the meantime, that's the latest with the power situation. keep your fingers crossed. all right. yeah. and the storm turned deadly in sonoma county. this is a terrible thing that happened to this family. >> they were in their home in the city of occidental when a redwood tree fell on the house, it was around 6 o'clock last night. the mom dad and their baby inside. when these strong winds brought the tree down, the fire chief tried to help, but it was too late. >> i first arrived on scene travel household child. he was kind of covered in debris. he said my child not a location. so my first thought get him into my and let's get about the main because he's on a driveway father into the
6:07 am
truck. >> as i was backing up down the driveway reversed. i was giving him instructions his and as we did, we got back the main rescue squad and they may be able to grab the child from the father and started cpr. >> and the child and make its mother and father were not physically harmed. >> well, new this morning, a 19 year-old woman has died now after her car crashed in fairfield wednesday morning. it happened on van dunn road and one lake drive. they say she was driving east on than done when she was hit when she hit a patch of standing water caused a car to hydro plants, lost control and ended up slamming into utility pole. the victim's name not yet released. fairfield police, though, are reminding people to be really careful, slow down while driving, especially since the rain is going to start picking up here. not only this morning, but across the next few days as well. and in the east bay, a father and his 2 girls are happy to be alive this morning they were
6:08 am
rescued from a flooding situation. this was on highway 4 in rodale right up there at the clays lane off-ramp. see how deep the water was. and there's their car stranded in the middle of it. firefighters had to extend the ladder from their ladder truck over the water to get to the family. they put some life vest and rpthen use that ladder to get back to dry land. firefighters say this is just a perfect example of what they always preach, which is when you come up across ponding water, you don't know how deep it is. it's best to just turn around. find another way instead of driving, trying to drive through it because obviously you could end up like this can and the wind was so strong. >> that it took down a gas station roof in south san francisco. yeah, this is the canopy that's over the pumps and it bent the palms. thank god they did explode. crawford's will trend actually out at that scene for us this morning where we can still see the damage behind you will. >> it is getting when you're by the minute, guys. but it is not raining. you can see my jacket is dry to put it
6:09 am
another way. it's almost as if the wind lifted a table and picked that up and you can see the damage that it's still there. this happened at around 6 o'clock last night or so. the sun was definitely down at the time and you can see what it did. it's on its side, of course. and then it ripped 2 palms from its stations. when was the last time any of us ever saw the inside pumping mechanism. but you can see both of them ripped open like a and me show you some video of different angles of this. fortunately, we are hearing that the people inside the gas station, they were fearful that they actually closed early for the night. so perhaps that's the reason why no car was underneath it and nobody was injured when they came toppling down. i can tell you it did not fall to the way of the building because the lights are still on inside the building and again, i just found out that appears nobody
6:10 am
was inside, including, of course, there's always a worker in case your car does not work. you have to go inside and see the attendant. not hard to figure out what caused it to go down is clearly the windy conditions. in fact, if head back out live now, you know, they can you show those trees change john shrable, take a look at that. it is windy. and as far as this, james, you made a perfect the last hour about it being maybe a sale. but it does not look like it's moving anytime soon. not sure they're going to send crews out today at the very least, maybe tie it down with some some rope or something. so it does not continue to topple. but the good news is at least nobody was hurt and no gas spewed all over. so all those mechanisms kicked into place that kept the gas under the ground instead of the ground. i don't even smell gasoline in the air, guys. all right. well, that's the best of scenarios
6:11 am
we should we could wish for. thank you. press it. visual. there was result of the storm. was. another one for you. >> damage recorded at us own an apartment complex. there you are sending this to our newsroom showing what they discovered when they took the asnightthey saw this tree falling to the ground. pretty tall tree. huge branch and luckily it broken away. that kind of just fell into that common area as opposed to crashing into the apartment or into those cars at the carr port right next door. it looked like that one might have touched the car. that white car might something. so luckily nobody reported hurt in that. and officials in alameda county are advising some residents in the area of now is can you to actually leave their homes now as anyon road has been closed for several days, as we know with mission boulevard because of flooding and mudslides. and it's expected to stay closed for the foreseeable future because officials say that the road is easy to floodand there's a lot of debris on the ground right now from the storm and one from the one from last weekenoo. onew year's eve. they're still
6:12 am
dealing with that and they say the creek next to the area is flowing pretty powerfully right now. and that the winds have knocked over some trees. officials say they do recommend that people leave because a lot of the roads in the area are in one way and one way and one way out. so you don't want to have that one exit route, cut off and be trapped and they would prefer people be gone. in the event of a much lighter, extreme flooding so that there's one less person after trying to rescue. and we are in the midst of. >> what is yet another push of that heavy rainfall making its way in here in the next few minutes. 50's this morning as well as this afternoon, but beginning to dry out. come the afternoon. watch out for heavy rain this morning. thunderstorms possible midday. your forecast ahead. >> and tracking a hot spot in seminole along 84. so you definitely want to stay away. well, the highway, if you can also talk about those strong winds, we want to be careful winds, we want to be careful before the rain

6:15 am
that's definitely him. dude. that's just a guy, taking a little break with a peppermint frosty... i gotta ask him... -hello. -hi. mind if i sit? okay... when it's frosty time... choose wisely. choose wendy's new peppermint frosty >> 6.15 right now. and let's take a live you know, this is 2.80, and you it's windy. i mean, you can just the camera shaking a bit here, indiana street 2.80, see the city in the of the sound of dry. >> for now? yeah. for now, i know that we are expecting more rain. some people already getting it and the every is get the wind. yeah. and if you don't get the rain, you may very well run into a chp officer out on the roads
6:16 am
trying to keep the speed down because there is debris being reported. in fact, i recorded some video on the way in showing, well, my drive looked like on west bound 5.80. fact, we've got some of that here to show you this morning and there they were doing a speed traffic break. as we're all being held to about it was about like maybe 40 miles an hour on the road as we were approaching, what was i later learned was debris trying to clear so well. look, if you are ahead of the chp, you run into the debris that they clear tripping. you're back there. so keep it slow, especially while it's still dark outside, you may not be able to see branch. >> on the street, if you're coming on too quick, you might not be able serve out a way and therefore there is more wind and rain on the way. so let's get a look at the timing. what's going on right now, john, the wind, the rain that we still have ahead of us is going to make for some spots out there, especially that will cause problems later on this morning where we're sitting right now at the golden gate bridge, at least from sutro tower, looking down at the golden gate bridge. >> you can see the camera also
6:17 am
has a little bit of sway to it right here. we are seeing rainfall increasing north of the golden gate right now. rain is increasing for marine sonoma on up in the lake and mendocino counties as well as portions of napa counties. this is our next line of showers. that's going to pack a punch moving through this morning right now, areas south and east of the golden gate are relatively calm, actually seeing a few showers around santa clara mountain view and sunnyvale. but most of that rain is concentrated further northward. those little blue pockets or areas where we saw storm reports last night. now, this system result in most wind damage is betweer that down gas station pump as well as all the downed trees that you saw across the bay area in the loss of power. so compared to the new year's eve system which saw the rising water for most areas, this one most damages were because of those strong winds. speaking of the winds were still looking at really breezy spots right along the coastline in san francisco. then especially up into the north bay right now, 30 to 40 miles per hour. gusts currently across marin county,
6:18 am
nicasio hills at 44 miles per hour. that's one of our spots. that's a hurricane force winds last night sears point at 29 miles per hour. a little calmer for you picking up in san pablo and el sobrante at 30 miles per hour. moraga 27 miles per hour. wind gusts and further south on the peninsula. pedro valley, spring valley, millbrae and burlingame. all in a 30 mile per hour range. spring valley close to 40 miles per hour. there's our next line of showers. really a heavy dose of rainfall right in the heart of the morning commute, especially between 07:00am to 08:00am this morning as we're going to see the heaviest of it rolling on through the bay. now, this will come along with a few pond in spots on roadways. so that risk of hydroplaning increases. we will see pockets of heavy rain after that. even a few rolls of thunder are possible. interspersed by moderate showers all the way through noon and into the early afternoon. after that point, we do start to see things becoming a lot calmer. and by the time you go to bed tonight, we'll be going to bed to calm conditions. thankfully
6:19 am
waking up for your friday at a really nice dry skies unless you're up in the north bay where we will see a few light showers, but we can handle that especially after what we've seen saturday is our next big rain maker in most of that will arrive into saturday night. now, rainfall estimates today really another inch possible whether max lighter amounts for most spots. if you find yourself in a downpour associated with the thunderstorm, you can see your rain totals a little bit higher than that. futurecast rain totals through next week. a lot more rain ahead of us. so we're not done with this. that's where the flooding risk prolongs for the russian river, especially which is starting to see water levels recede. you'll actually see crest of flood waters into sunday night into monday of next week because of additional systems that we do have around the corner. now we have high wind advisories barely hanging on for upper elevations. speaking of upper elevations, a winter storm warning in the sierra through 04:00am tomorrow today. not a good day to be heading to the sierra. save that for tomorrow
6:20 am
afternoon when things have really calmed down 50's for current temperatures and for daytime highs. not a lot of temperature change to the rest of the forecast. neither we tomorrow. a pretty dry day for most areas and then rain each of the next few days after that, heaviest of which will be saturday night and again on monday rain. all right, john, we'll we're still following that hot spot along 84 eastbound and westbound both closed. >> just east of 6.80. so you cannot hop on 6.80, from 84 or vice versa. you have to take 5.80, down to dublin and hop on 6.80, that way or just stay on 6.80, and get around that because that's going to be closed for some time because of that accident. we also have some reports of flooding out there. so 3.80, eastbound to that 101, north connector there in south san francisco. a little further 101, northbound north of 92 east and san mateo. so be safe and careful as you're traveling. high winds still a problem out there. 10 minutes into the city so that fremont street exit so certainly slowed down.
6:21 am
don't drive fast this morning. our san mateo bridge 80 to 101 a 13 minute ride as you're traveling across towards the peninsula. a richmond sandra fell bridge 8 minutes tolls to run a one would definitely those wind gusts still out there. and we do have a downed tree. this is a northbound 2.80, at page mill road in los altos hills. again, if you are traveling just adjacent to that, you can get through, but you might want to hop on 82 or maybe 101, to not run into any slowing as you're traveling through this area. darya james, back to you. rain okay. from the roads to the >> waterways. now ferry service disrupted again today because of the high winds. this is video from a viewer last night who was riding on some pretty rough waters. multiple routes were council last night. in fact, at last check, all ferry routes are good to go. but if you usually ride a ferry to work, you should have a backup plan just in case we see cancellations. we'll update you throughout the morning on a map. pretty pretty rough out there on the
6:22 am
waters and because of the storm, the sonoma county school district has closed schools for the day. the south san francisco unified school district and san mateo foster city school districts. they've canceled classes hoping to resume tomorrow. schools at the san francisco unified school district and they sausalito marine city school district will remain open. >> and it's 6.22. right now we want to take a live look here at the university avenue on 101, southbound. you can see these cameras really around the bay. they're all shaking like this wind is an rain is starting to fall again. and it does look like a match of rain. so drive carefully leave extra time and stick with us because we'll try to get you through the 2nd half of this storm will be right back.
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
>> 6.25 right now and we have new video into our newsroom that we want to show you. this is a tree that came down in pleasant hill on old corey road near camelback contra costa county. emergency workers got out there pretty quick. you can see they chopped up. got it all off. the roadway reopened. but it took a it took. and after that victory, yes, lot less. there was a downed power line. you have the force, the closure of oak park boulevard keats circle that's open again now. and then though, some flooding on aster drive and cleveland road that subsided. so that's open now to up. and then in san francisco, we saw this scene right here, scaffolding coming crashing down onto power lines because of the wind. this was near a church on south van ness. that
6:26 am
street had to be shut down from about 19th to 22nd street. so that stretch of and that was off-limits. they lost power in the area for a while until they could get restore. luckily, nobody hurt. >> but it's amazing to see when you have video like this showing that kind of yeah. takelook at this one. another down treated blocking lanes of traffic on mission street near south van ness. >> partially landed on the front of that car was parked on mission street. fortunately, at least nobody got hurt. so that's some good news. well, speaking of trees down on the car's a family had to be rescued after a tree came crashing down onto their car in san francisco. they were trapped inside. this is video from the citizen app. you can see everybody responding running up to try and help. >> this was on grove street in front of the city library. fire crews say the family's, ok, it took a little bit back. you can see them here with chain saws trying to cut those branches backs. they could get to the car. >> and get the family out. >> let's take a live look now outside as we go to the break. and actually a storm tracker 4
6:27 am
0st want to take a look at the rain that's moving into the bay area. again, another round. this is not over yet. we'll continue our special storm edition of the kron. 4 morning news in just a couple of minutes.
6:28 am
6:29 am
>> 6.29 right now and we're taking a look outside it's dark, so it's hard to see. but we do know that there's more rain returning. there's more wind. and so want to take it
6:30 am
slow because you can't see too much ahead of, know, throughout the morning commute going to be impacted by another round of wet weather. in fact, i think let's find out from john where it's falling right now and hopefully this will have an impact on the drought. john yetter. we've got more rain on the way and the latest drought monitor showing the best news because of all this rain and elimination completely of exceptional drought. so this is where we were a few weeks ago. look at this. >> central valley was just inundate an exceptional drought that read extreme drought for the rest of the bay area. look at what happened over the past couple of weeks here. we saw a go back we saw, the elimination of that deepest of red, the exceptional drought now is gone from this latest rainfall. this does not include what we saw last night nor on into the rest of this week either. so we're likely to see even further improvements from what we saw last night, which is such such good news now for the last the good news, obviously, with a storm like this does come a lot of downsides. and that did include a lot of downed trees last night, which especially
6:31 am
if you're driving city streets this morning, watch out for some degrees in roadways, whether its branches trees, anything that blew into roads overnight. rainfall is increasing actively as we speak for the north bay right now. you see some heavier areas of brain tumor in sonoma, mendocino, lake and napa counties. it's about to increase for the rest of us. but we're still hanging on to some lighter showers. so the rest of the bay right around windsor, a heavier pocket of rain there right now as you're traveling up 101 watch for some standing water on roadways. there's not going to take a lot of additional rainfall for used to start to see some standing water piling up in poor drainage areas, especially mountain view in fremont. minor showers for you right now. these heavier rains continue to push in through the morning are right in the midst of the busiest time of day for commuters in pockets of heavy rain, interspersed by moderate showers through the rest of the morning into the early afternoon. could even see a few rules of thunder and lightning strikes too. flooding risk across the bay area still under flood watches because of this remaining rain. i'm talking about as for
6:32 am
the russian river water levels receding. they're expecting crest of the russian river on into late weekend into early next week because of additional systems just around the corner. now 50's for current temperatures. it's mild. so just focus on the rain jackets and keeping dry as you are getting out there. of course, the good news rain is the drought. but the bad news is the issues on the roads. we have a lot of those. yeah, we do. we have a lot of highway flooding. so if you're in the south bay, like john just mentioned. >> 87 southbound at west taylor street flooding reports there northbound 1, 1, south a key role in san jose. flooding reports there a little further down the los gatos southbound, 17 south of he borrowed some flooding there as well. these are all reports that are coming in this morning. 3.80, eastbound 101, north and south san francisco reports of flooding there a little further down along the peninsula. northbound north of it to east. so that means slow down. try of slow this morning. also have high wind so if water and highways high winds as well, 10 minutes
6:33 am
heading into the city this morning. our san mateo bridge about 8 minutes tolls to want to one there. but you still have those high wind gusts. we do have an accident out in seminole eastbound westbound. 84 just east 6.80, all lanes are blocked there. so you can't get through and you can hop on 6.80, or you can go from 6 city on to 84. so 5, 86, 80 best route for you this morning. a lot going on out on our highways. we're going to have more. that rain start to hit down across the bay area. darya. james, back to you. thank you. reyna is 6.33. and the big story is the storm did turned deadly in sonoma county. >> a baby was killed. it happened in the city of occidental. a redwood tree fell on a house last night around 6 o'clock in the evening and the family was inside a mom dad and their child. a son who is one or 2 years old and the father came running out with the boy afterwards. fire chief tried to help, but it was too late.
6:34 am
>> i first arrived on scene farther a household a child. he was kind of covered in debris. he said my child not a location. so my first thought get him into my and let's get about the main because he's on a driveway father into the truck. >> as i was backing up down the driveway reversed. i was giving him instructions his as we did. we got back the main rescue squad and they may be able to grab the child from the father and started cpr. >> and clearly, as you heard, the father was covered with the breeze to so wherever that tree landed, everybody seems to have been in its path. but it was their son. it took the life of their child and the man and a woman are said to be physically okay. >> well, new this morning, a 19 year-old woman we've learned h dieafter her car crashed in fairfield yesterday morning. it happened on van
6:35 am
and road and one lake drive. they say she was tch of standing water. hydroplaned lost control and slamming into utility pole. the victim's name has not yet been released. but fairfield police are using this as a reminder for people to be careful, especially as we have more rain coming. you want to slow down, especially in the dark when you can't see if the any standing water in front of you are going to kind of be in this dangerous weather period, least for the next few days. we're also tracking the latest with power outages as well. this is pg e's power outage map and the situation has improved over the course of the morning. when we woke up this morning, we had a total of nearly 100,000 customers without power. >> that number has been brought down to about 80,000. so let's walk you through what we're seeing right now beginning in san francisco where last night and early this morning they had roughly 6600 people customers without power. that number has dropped down to about 3,000. so they made good progress cut about in half. here you see in the orange and red. that is the
6:36 am
hardest hit part of the peninsula. that was slammed with power outages last night we had 5,000 plus customers withoutpower in each of these little high concentration pockets, the the entire peninsula. few take it all into account. they had 41,000 customers without power. at the start of our broadcast, they've been able to whittle that down to about 343500 customer 35,000 customers without power. now let's go to the uth bay. the situation there in the south bay had been about 16,000 customers without power. most of it minor. you see those small circles of green. that's what that indicates that 16,000 number has been dropped now to about 12,000. so they're slowly making progress as neighborhood by neighborhood. they're getting these power lines repaired. let's jump to the east the inland east bay near the 60 corridor, walnut creek alamo, all the way down towards san ramon in livermore. that's fine. we're not looking at too much power ou concentration for the east bay really is along the shoreline, the upper portions of the shoreline from oakland all the way up towards richmond.
6:37 am
that's where we're seeing customers without power in the highest numbers there. we went from 12,000 total customers down to about 7800 and then in the north bay. the situation is also improving, but not by much in the entire north bay. we had 23,000 customers without power. at the start of the broadcast, they've actually been able to shave off about 300. so we're 22,700 customers right now. the reason why is because a lot of these outages are in these hillier terrain is lot of trees. lot of limbs, lot of danger of more trees and limbs coming down. so pg really does have to wait till the winds kind of calm down before they can really get into these other areas and start to restore power to the north bay. whenill that be available to them later this afternoon? an then tomorrow will be another window of opportunity for crews to get out there. and so hopefully we'll have better numbers for you as the day progresses started. all right. let's take a look at some of them video that we have of damage. this storm took out some power lines and a crown for a viewer captured the explosive moment. >> take a look.
6:38 am
>> i mean, that's crazy. isn't it? although sparks in this explosion in sandra fell multiple transformers blew up. >> so if you're in that area and james just reviewed, you know, who lost power in the north bay? >> a couple of cities come down from their souf there. but i know that my power was kind of going off and on for a bit. i didn't se it, though. and so if you're supplied by those transf, that's the culprit for you. luckily nobody was hurt. so that's a good thing for a spectacular, though. take a look at these downed power lines blocking the road around bella vista avenue in oakland. this is video from the citizen app. the ines have since been down since yesterday afternoon and p g says that's affecting about 50 customers that don't have power. >> well, an evacuatiorning is still in effect for those

survived the first atmospheric river here in the 4 o'clock 6 o'clock rain storm. creeks flowing about 50% right now. it's flowing really fast. so it's a dangerous situation. somebody was to get close to >> we're hoping not much more rain comes. we are really concerned about 4.30, in the morning. tomorrow morning on that one we may have low pressure title activity and we might have a whole lot of rain coming down. >> like you said that they're used to this overflowed a fe yearsback to business. owners are hopeful that won't happen this time precautions that they have taken will help and keeping their eye on. things will help too. >> neighborhood in point, richmond has already been evacuated because of the threat of landslides. families from different homes have to stay in a shelter this morning as crews were up on the hill yesterday trying to put tarp . get closer in shot here. so you can see they're concerned that there it is. there concern that the ground is going to get even more loose with all of this rain that's still

expected to come and they don't want to risk all that earth sliding down in the homes below. residents were allowed to rab eir belongings, whatever they needed before they evacuated. >> the we just don't know. i mean, it could be really bad or minor what we're taking precautions. you should contract for the when got a group called try to keep water out of the so city richmond has been really pro at this hole about 9 o'clock last night. yeah, the police came arouolthat the flashing lights are all part of evaluation situation and about police officer a fireman came by and said >> the city is encouraging you to vacuum. >> well, crews also cut off the water supply, but the surrounding fire hydrants just to make sure that if the grounded movie didn't rupture a line and send geysers of

water more water than they need into the air. evacuation updates are available on the city's web sies. if you're onof those impacted by this, you want to keep checking that. and there is a pop-up shelter. we should ll you about out now open in san francisco for anyone who needs cover from the storm. the shelter is located the county fair building right there at the corner of lincoln way and 9th avenue in golden gate park right near the botanical garden. it's a 24 hour. 7 day, a week shelter. it's going to stay open until january. 15th. they're accepting walk-ins at any time. you don't need a reservation. just show up and they'll help keep you dry. and we're also seeing the american red cross doing the same thing in the south bay. they have a 24 7 shelter open now in san jose. so anyone who needs a place to stay during the storm can go there to the 7 trees community center that's located at 35 90 cast drive just off east capitol expressway. john. >> well, we are looking at the next line of showers pushing through rightnow. its impacting the north bay and will continue to push further

the storm and what it's doing right now on 80 at a high street. just taking a peak that was frozen was a frozen shot. but it does show you what we've been seeing is a camera shaking. so we still have wind out there and the rain is restarting 2 guys. i wanted to have a chat with john about. >> the start. i've been hearing a lot from folks out and about saying what, why is it that we're getting all this rain like what storm a break. another storm, another storm, another storm, another storm. what is it about this weather system that's got these all coming our way. so let's let's get the breakdown. absolutely. and i mean, the season is catching a lot of people by surprise. it is technically a la nina year which is supposed to be a especially for southern california, can result in drier conditions. >> so the set up recently, james inhofe has been those high-pressure ridges that build in the southwest. yeah, those can to tory u.s.. lee, keep us dry, especially during la nina years. yeah. haven't really had a chance to strengthen these low pressure forming in the gulf of alaska have continuously tapped into

what we call that atmospheric river as a whole. the pineapple express as well, which draws in moisture directly directly from the tropics around hawaii and builds that right into the bay. so this rather than that has been continuously winning out and that's not going anywhere. it sat down. so we've got this like continuous almost like conveyor belt of moisture being pulled from the tropics and thrown literally just up against california coast in exactly area. you can just see these moisture plume stretching from hawaii right into bay area. i mean, atmospheric river, pineapple express. those are the terms that we use a lot. yeah. whatever term you want to has helped us a ton holy cow. and you know, it's funny is that direct line from hawaii to the bay area. i want to share with everybody wh outside of san francisco right now. this is a cruise ship that's just come to us from honolulu. that's not the only thing they rode all those stormy seas from hawaii all the way to here. can you imagine what kind of a cruise
6:48 am
that must have been? i wonder these things, some fuel they got email wind just pushed him right in the area. also, anybody coming back to the bay from that trip to hawaii. i'm sure glad to be home. but what a ride that must have been. i hope that they at least beat the rain because that would not have been a fun cruise. otherwise we are looking at still some showers from this latest system pushing actively into the bay area. right now. we've got one more very well formed line that is pushing into the north bay right now. you see it from the lake county mountains resulting in snowfall up there, some heavier pockets of rain in the north bay. and we're just continuing to see that heavy snow in the sierra. that's been a huge blessing from this latest system. we just saw heavy rain around rohnert park now crossing over towards the napa county. this line of showers is set to drop into the bay area more so within the next couple of hours here, most of our storm reports what you're seeing in those blue dots have been because of wind this time around because of the fast-moving nature of the

storms and the really strong winds that come along with that. you're not seeing as much water piling up his new your new year's eve storm. we're seeing a lot more wind damage and downed trees. look at these winds in the north bay still gusting into that 30's, even 40 miles per hour range last night, marine county saw hurricane force winds at 85 miles per hour. only take 74 more miles per hour to qualify as a category one hurricane. so that's really saying something. lafayette, very windy right now. 29 miles per hour. winds for you. san lorenzo up to alameda right there along the east bay shoreline. quite windy. i want to focus on the peninsula to because as this latest line of showers pushes and it really is the north bay and the coast that singer strongest winds right now. winds are about to pick up for more and more of us as this line of showers scoots on in futurecast shows those areas of red. those are your downpours that even though make their way across the bay area rather quickly can still result in some ponding of water on roads. some standing water out there from time to

time. so do take this seriously. these next few minutes, just taking a little bit slower. also watch for debris. zinn roadways still have the potential of downed trees because it is so windy and so saturated pockets of heavier rain remain through the rest of the morning, too, on up towards noontime. you're still looking at areas of heavy rain. so your lunch time, maybe one to stay inside for it. we finally calm down towards the latter part of the afternoon and then a nice calm night tonight as you go to sleep tomorrow, the calmest day in this forecast before we see more rainfall increasing especially into saturday and saturday night and then again on into monday. this is just an active forecast. rest of the day today should stay below an inch as far as rainfall goes, pockets could see heavier doses of rain. if you do find yourself under a thunderstorm and an ensuing down week, a lot more rain ahead of us. and that does increase the risk of flooding, especially in the north bay. russian river levels are dropping currently but are expected to crest again towards late sunday into monday. so that's something to

keep your eye on. a few wind advisories left mostly just for upper elevations in the sierra. we still do have winter storm warnings through 04:00am tomorrow. multiple feet of snow in just as windy up there, which means white out conditions don't be traveling up in the sierra until tomorrow. as for today, it's0's for your daytime highs in the bay area. we stay that way through the forecast tomorrow or and then we crank the years right up again saturday night, especially and then monday, another dose of heavy rain john, thank you for that. lots of issues out there on our highways and bar as well. we have a 20 minute systemwide delay. >> because of the weather so taken bar today. factor that into your morning commute. hot spot out here. and so no, this westbound and eastbound both close along. 84 just east of 6.80, say you can't get on the 6.80, from 84 or vice versa because that's close. all the way to navigate and get around that. our bridges right now, 10 minutes heading into the city may so that fremont street exit high winds across

now and looking outside at what we have right now is a return of some heavy rain for parts of the north bay. >> this is the 5th final heavy dose of at least a line of showers from this latest system. we will see pockets of th through the rest of the morning. so it's definitely a morning to stay to stay out there. excuse me, it's a stay on keeping a look at the radar. so we are seeing heavier rain up in the north bay right now. santa rosa on over to the napa county line. you do have those heavier pockets of rain out there. marin county also looking at some showers, their pockets of showers here and there from fremont down through san jose. and what we do have on future cast is that continued line of showers right there through

the middle of the morning commute, pockets of those heavy rains can result in some standing water on roadways the time. so we're definitely not out of the system just yet. strong winds, heavy rain still ahead of us for the morning commute. and as you are getting outside, make sure that you're giving yourself those extra few minutes, especially in neighborhoods. we still have some drew brees and roadways branches downed trees in spots, even though chp has been great about clearing those off of our highways. continuing to see pockets of heavy rain through the rest of the morning and even on into the early afternoon. i'll be keeping you updated all morning long on the remnants of this system and what we've still got ahead of us, which is even more into the weekend and next week. still to come. when a truck hit my car, the insurance company wasn't fair.
