5:00 am
>> this morning on the kron 4 morning news. the stormy weather turns deadly after tree falls on the north bay home killing a child. plus people had to be rescued from rising flood waters as trees fall on roads all across the bay area and strong winds damaged buildings. more on the rain right away. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news far. >> good morning. and thanks for waking up with us here on the kron. 4 morning news. we're going to get it through another day of this storm. i've dari and i'm james and we've got a lot to cover this morning. we have damage with power outages. we still have flooding and mudslides throughout the bay area to deal with. the good news is we do have a brief pause right now. >> between the heavy rains we saw yesterday and the rain is coming up for the morning commute. and the good news is everybody had prepared prepared yesterday were preparing it today because like you said, james, it's not over yet. let's talk about what happens with the storm.
5:01 am
>> this morning, john. yeah, the biggest impact from this one was the wind guys. we have hurricane force winds across much of the north bay and 85 miles per hour. peak wind gust. all it takes is 74 miles per hour to be a category one hurricane. so that was what you notice more than anything else. rainfall from the system, albeit heavy did push through rather quickly. so you didn't see it piling up as much so as you're driving to work this morning, at least on your highways, for the most part, you're doing pretty good. it's the city streets. watch out for some downed trees. some branches, some limbs in the roadways. this is what you're looking at across the east bay hills right here where we are seeing conditions overall, fairly calm right now compared to what you saw when you went to bed last night and what you're about to see here in about an hour. we do continue to have bands of rainfall pushing in across the bay area and the state. heaviest of rainfall is actually out the central valley and up on the north coast right now were comparatively quiet. but we do have a few showers for areas like fremont. couple lingering showers in areas like san jose
5:02 am
as well. our next band of rain is sitting offshore right now. you can actually see all that cloud cover right here. some of that green that's been can going to become more and more appear on radar and it's going to work its way our direction here in the next few hours. so you can see that here between 5.36, to 6.30, for the north bay, heavy rain and strong winds pushing through and between 6, 7, to 8 for the rest of the bay area. much like last night. this will be a heavier burst of rain, but it waste no time clearing the bay area moving rather quickly over us. after that, you will see lingering moderate rainfall in areas of thunderstorms, pockets of heavy rain for the remainder of the morning on into the early afternoon. so keep a close eye on radar, really, especially through the early part of today, but into the afternoon as well. flooding risk continues. we do have flood watches for the bay area. flooding potential has not been as bad with the storm is what we saw during the last one. the russian river has started to recede after peaking last night will rise
5:03 am
again this weekend as our next system arrives, though, 50's for current temperatures oakland-alameda in redwood city each at 57 degrees right now. i'm talking all the details you need to know for today as well as what we have. still ahead of us all still to john, thank you for that. well, we do have some reports of some issues out there like a downed tree northbound to 80. >> at page middle row, this is in los altos hills of if you are traveling, you can get through a few lanes are impacted by that. the 1, 0, 1, 82 not seen any major issues in connection to that traveling into the city this morning. we have high winds across most of our bridges. so the benicia bridge, if you're traveling across the dumbarton bridge this morning and the bay bridge and had to hold onto the steering wheel with both hands to slow down as a drive-in my full dry out there. but again, you don't want to be blown into the neighbor, elaine, by those strong winds. 8 minutes may so that fremont street exit your san mateo bridge is going to take about 30 minutes. 80 to one want to traveling across towards the peninsula. a
5:04 am
richmond center fell bridge puts us at about 7 minutes. so still want to one. and if you're taking any of our highways like 101, is going to take 28 minutes. 85 to menlo park 8.80, san leandro down in milpitas about 20 minutes. darya. james, back to you. >> reyna, thank you. let's talk about the power outages because that's one of the big effects coming out of the storm that we saw yesterday. this is pg e's live outage map where we have real-time information on where we're seeing it dark right now for some the latest numbers for pg e has 11 o'clock last night. we're still waiting for the update this morning. but as it stands, san francisco, the peninsula seeing some of the hardest hit areas right now, mainly in south san francisco and then down here towards san bruno, out towards pacifica daly, city, como those areas seeing a pretty substantial power outage. in fact, in the city itself, more than 6600 customers without power. but right here on the penonsula, we're looking at more than 41,000 customers without power. so that certainly is one of the hardest hit areas as we slide the maps to the south from redwood city, down
5:05 am
in through santa clara county. we're looking at fairly widespread minor outages. that's what all these green dots indicate for us this morning. and it's pretty wide across the county across the entirety. the south bay. we're looking at about 16,000 customers without power from here. let's jump to the east bay. that's probably the least hardest hit area, especially along 6.80, corridor. wannacry pleasant hill out towards the delta. but if you take a look here at the upper east shore freeway from the bay bridge north towards richmond, you're looking at outages that are fairly widespread, although minor in nature, but still fairly widespread. in fact, the east bay in total has about 12,000 customers without power right now. and then our final stop for you is going to the north bay. and again, it was the north bay hills that got hit pretty hard, especially with those winds and all those trees that came down caused havoc for power lines. so here you can see the coloring, the darker, the color, the more customers without power. orange indicates 5,000 plus customers without power in that area. in fact, in total, the entire north bay has about 23 custom
5:06 am
20,000 customers without power. right now, when will restorations begin when we'll start to see the lights come back on at this point. that's a big question. mark pg e har no estimate yet on when that work. can that be done? in fact, they say they can't even started really until the winds die down. it's just too dangerous for them to get that utility workers upon those polls. while the winds are still blowing around. so it's going to be weather dependent on whether they can get out there and start doing that. work will keep you updated. >> 506, is the time. and the storm turned deadly in sonoma county. a baby was killed in the city of occidental. i mean, he was in the home with his mom and dad when a redwood tree fell on their house. and this was around 6 o'clock last night to see video from the scene here. those winds were whipping. so it brought the tree down into the home. and the dad ran out of the house with the child in his arms, the fire. she tried to help, but it was too late.
5:07 am
>> i first arrived on scene travel household in the child. he was kind of covered in debris and said my child not a location. so my first thought it my and let's get about the main because he's on a driveway father into the truck. >> as i was backing up down the driveway reversed. i was giving him instructions his as we did. we got back the main rescue squad and they may be able to grab the child from the father and started cpr. >> so sad. you can see the father tried to save his child and as he said, he was covered with debris himself. so it seems like that was a pretty bad tree collapsed there in the home the child couldn't make it and didn't make it. the mother and father are okay. >> well, 507. let's take you to the east bay where a father and his 2 girls had to be rescued from flooding waters. and this was along highway 4 in rodeo, right out clay's
5:08 am
lane off-ramp. you can see the deep water and the car stranded in the middle of it all. firefighters had to use their ladder truck extended over the water to get to the family. they put life jackets on those family members and then they all climbed on that letter back to dry land and safety. firefighters say this is just another example of why you shouldn't drive through water if you're not quite sure how deep it is. turnaround. yeah. and you may encounter puddles this morning, too. and you just never know. so we want to keep you posted on that. we also want to show you what happened. >> at a gas station in south san francisco. >> look at this. the strong winds toppled the canopy over the gas pumps and it's just lucky they didn't explode. yeah. pretty impressive to see kron four's will tran actually out there for us this morning with a look at the situation now. >> the work to get that fixed will. >> whether or not going sit upright this any time soon. unfortunately, there are no cars underneath the canopy, but you can see with the winds did last night. it is still
5:09 am
gusty. by the way, i'll show you only can you show those trees. look at them swaying back and forth. but i'm sure that is nothing compared to what happened last night at around 6 o'clock in the evening when strong gusts basically lifted like a hand underneath the canopy and pushed it over like a picnic table. if i had to use an analogy like a picnic table and lifted it up and when it finally came crashing down, it also ripped 2 pumps from its stations. let me show you some video from other angles just so you can see the magnitude of what happened. fortunately, it did not start spewing gasoline all over the place, but there were probably people inside because there's a convenience store right next to it. and of course, there's always a worker inside, but it fell down and not to the side where it would have fallen onto the building and people inside, maybe even customers at that particular time. of
5:10 am
course, it did not take very long to figure out the cause of this. i'm sure it was the strong winds, daly city, no stranger, the strong winds, but we're a little bit higher up in the hills. james and darya. so last night was especially strong and it came underneath the canopy and pushed it over. of course, they're not worried about getting this upright anytime soon, especially with the next round. just right around the corner. but this is obviously quite expect hackler example to show you the bomb cyclone and what it did back to you. that's for sure that of the worry is will with the storm coming in. i mean, that just looks like a giant sale that. >> thing could go flying if they don't find a way to lash that down, at least if they're not going to disassemble it. pretty impressive at looks like there's no, you know. worry about spilling gas or anything like that. even though couple pumps were damaged.
5:11 am
>> i walked up a little bit closer and the palms, even though there are lights inside the convenience store. jameson, great observation. the lights are inside, but i'm sure they have systems in place where they can cut off the power to the pumps because right now the pumps have no power whatsoever. and of course, you need power to work. the pumps underneath the ground to get it up to our cars. so fortunately, no, no gas. i don't even smell gasoline on the ground. so somehow some way i'm sure all the mechanisms kicked in where it just stopped any gas from spewing. and i don't think any cars or underneath it at the time pumping gas. ironically, james darya, the canopy is there to protect us from the elements. but it was the elements that took the canopy yesterday. >> back to usually is true. hank, you will thanks. we'll check back with you later. all right. we also have video to coming out of san ramon. this from an apartment complex. there were a viewer sent us video saying they were taking out the trash when they saw giant tree fall to the ground.
5:12 am
that's when they cops captured this video of it. and you can see clearly and luckily it broke in a way that it didn't land on the actual apartment itself, but sort of in that common area. >> on the ground below and now nobody reported being hurt by this. looks like it very narrowly missed the car. parked the car park, right? right? yeah or 2. so see it. this is what john was talking about all yesterday because this is the second storm to really saturate the ground see more trees come down. you know, probably because we've got a 3rd storm coming to we do. yeah, it seems like each storm has a different impact. the first one was the flooding. >> this one cause of saturated ground. historian james are saying resulted in trees toppling for a lot of the bay area. that's what you'll notice, especially neighborhoods this morning. likely some downed branches and downed trees. what we see through the rest of the day of one more heavy buying of showers pushing through. after that, we will have heavy pockets of rain associated with thunderstorms calming down towards the very tail end of the day. and then a break
5:13 am
tomorrow before more rain around the corner your forecast ahead. and you have those high winds out there today. so make sure you're driving a lot slower. we're driving a lot slower. we're

>> 5.15, and thanks for tuning in this day after the first punch from this storm and we are expecting another once and you're not getting wet right now. don't think these roadways will stay dry for too long because now five-fifteen and we expect more rain, at least around 6 o'clock. here's a look at some traffic 2.42.
5:16 am
in concord yet grant yeah. and you can see everybody's up early to seem to be, you know, going pretty slowly. it's not the rain in your way right now. you'll definitely feel some wind for sure. this is 5.80, and again that the roadway listening. a little 80. listening a little bit, but it's not actively raining yet now. and these folks have the right idea which is get to work now, water in this dry spell before the rain returns, which is expected to land right during the morning commute. so just keep in mind, we're going to visit with john here in a little bit. >> to talk more about that. in the meantime, this was my drive this morning coming in. and we actually had a chp officer doing a traffic break to control the speed because i would later discover down the road. they were still clearing out debris from what looked like either a fallen tree or branch or something on the road right there on the highway. yeah, john so they had a stalled diverted to the far left lane to get past it. but he was trying to slow us down before we got to those cones because he actually peeled off a little before it.
5:17 am
and the folks around me started to speed up and then we saw the cones and everybody kind of had to veer to the left i was wondering why we're a little late. yeah. haha. and that's why i may very well encounter. the same thing yesterday is out there trying to keep you safe, trying to keep the speed down as they're still cleaning up some of the debris from last nights when i was surprised with how strong the wind was are. and that was highest peaks of the wind right up to 85 miles an hour. are in. you had hurricane force winds in size of this was a wind storm for sure. and that's why we had so many downed trees out there. >> that was the major storm report we saw from this one was just trees down all across the bay area. we saw at one point highway one in pacific couple blocked by a tree. i'm sure for this cruise ship as it was landing in here last night wasn't the easiest night to be pulling up on the embarcadero. wasn't the easiest night for anything to be getting outside. that was james and darya mentioned. we are in a bit of a lull in between our next band of showers which is going to work its way in here in short
5:18 am
order. we're already seeing heavy rainfall across the north coast will see rainfall increasing really through the 06:00am hour for the north bay. and then after that for the rest of us quiet comparatively. right now, we are seeing a few light showers in the south bay up the snow great through the tri valley. a few of you up in the north bay. also seeing some lighter showers, but definitely nothing much to know. most of the storm reports that you're seeing those little blue bubbles are reports of trees that had fallen last night on major roadways. as james noted, chp got out there right away waclearing those out. so we've got to commend those officials for being right on top of it. keeping us safe on into early morning hours, making itossible for you to be able to get outside and get to work. right now we're looking at 30 miles per hour. wind gusts in the western edge of san francisco as well as in portions of marion county, as we mentioned, was the big winner as far as winds last night kept field in corte madera at 36 miles per hour. right on the richmond center fell looking at 36 mile per hour winds too. richmond, a little calmer, comparatively
5:19 am
around 12 miles per hour. oakland-alameda 17 miles per hour for you. and if we zoom out just a little bit, look at the rest of the bay burlingame millbrae. 32 miles per hour. definitely quieter across the santa clara valley. we are seeing that next line pushing through here in the next couple of hours. let's track. it's are sonoma and napa counties seeing this heavy rain and still some strong winds along with it. these will bring heavy downpours to the bay right in the heart of the morning commute but brings it through rather quick. it's a quick line of showers that pushes through could see some ponding of water on roadways there briefly. so that will slow you down for sure. after this moves through, we'll have widespread moderate rain, pockets of heavy rain and even a few rolls of thunder all the way through noontime into the early afternoon. things start to diminish after that point, we'll still see the chance of a pop-up thunderstorm towards the tail end of the day. and then a fairly quiet evening tonight. tomorrow looks like your best one for really doing anything north bay. we'll see some showers. but the rest of

us should be sitting it out for your friday before saturday. we see rainfall gradually increasing through the day and our next storm really peaking looking like saturday night of this weekend. as for rainfall totals for the rest of the day, definitely below one inch, which is nice to say because everything we've been talking about has been well above it. you add up everything that we have ahead of us all the way through next week. and we do have a very rainy week ahead of us next week, too. don't think that we're down with the rainfall just yet. flooding risk does continue. we have flood watches for the bay area. flood warnings for portions of sonoma county, russian river levels are lowering right now but will peak again into sunday of this weekend. high wind advisories for upper elevations. for the day. we're still breezy out there and we still do have winter storm warnings for the sierra nevada through 04:00am tomorrow. not the day to head up to the sierra today. tomorrow is really your window of opportunity. as for temps today will be in the 50's for the bay just a little bit cooler than yesterday was the

rest of the forecast. looks pretty steady. temperature wise tomorrow is our best opportunity for any outdoor activities. as saturday night. our eext round of heavy rain monday, heavy rain, lighter showers after that tuesday and wednesday. >> rain. all right. on the eve of that, well, we have a hot spot. this is westbound 84 just east of 6.80, so as you're traveling along here, that accident there all lanes are currently blocked. so again, if they don't get that cleared off, he won't be able to go through the air at all along 6.80, and continue. so you're going to have to take 5.80, to navigate to get around that. remember, 84 hears a traveling along mission boulevard. that's been close. so this is just as you're getting ready to hop onto 6, 80 here at 84 east. we had an accident there. so lanes are blocked in close. we have really high winds today. if you're traveling into the city, you want to definitely put both of those hands on the steering wheel and slow it down. 8 minutes may so that free much exit. if you're traveling now, the san mateo bridge, no accidents or

>> we are back ata5.24. with some more video coming into our newsroom. showing a tree that came down in pleasant hill. this one on corey road right near camelback and cocoa county. emergency workers got out there fast. as you can see, they did a pretty good job, cutting it up and getting it off the roadway and hit him in erie open. but for that was a task. and there was also a downed power line that forced the closure of oak park boulevard and keyed circle that's open now. and there was some flooding on asked to drive. >> and cleveland road that has subsided. so that's open as well. and we expected there would be a lot of cleanup in the wake of the storm. and here's another example. this time in san francisco. we have the winds send scaffolding crashing down into power lines. this was right near a church on south van ness. >> that street had to be shut down from about 19 street to 22nd street. they lost power there for a time. luckily nobody was hurt. took him a little while to get this cleared up. but just another example of what those winds really did last away. there's another down tree that was blocking lanes of traffic on

5:37 am
another report shortly. back to you, james, thank you so much for the updates are and we'll check in with you soon. >> all right, 5.36, we have some good news on the power outage front. some updated numbers from pg need just coming into our newsroom. so we wanted to give you the good news. there are restorations that are taking place. in fact, very wide. as we woke up this morning, we had nearly 100,000 customers without power that's been brought down. now to about 80,000 customers still without power. so they're making progress. still a lot to do. but they are making some progress and will begin with san francisco. kind of do a counter-clockwise tour. the bay beginning in the city where they have restoration now of quite a few customers. originally we had more than 6,000 customers without power. now that's dropped down to about 3,000. so they've cut that by more than half. so that's good news. the peninsula was one of the hardest hit areas of the entire bay. and you can see francisco coma, aly city, south stretching all wn towards the irpo and be on th peninsula. originally had more than 41,000 customers without power. at the start of the
5:38 am
broadcast that's beenropped down to now 34,000. so good news there in the south bay, santa clara valley. they originally had about 16,000 customers without power. there were a lot more red or green dots here. but that number has dropped down to just about 12,000. so they've restored power to about 4,000 customers in the east bay. we're seeing progress there as well. initially this morning we had about 12,000 customers without power. now it's down to about 7,000, 800 to about 8,000 customers still without power. looking good here along the lower portions of the east bay. once we get up to the upper east shore, oakland, north towards albany, berkeley, el serino, that's where we're kind of seeing where the power outages are concentrated for the east bay. let's finish off in the north bay where this morning we're looking at what originally was 2300 customers without power. now we're looking at about 22. 22,700. so we haven't seen quite as much repair work done up in the nortbay, but that's to be expected. there's a lot more trees, a lot more. a hilly
5:39 am
mountainous terrain here. the high winds last night really did a number. a lot of limbs came down. so that's where they're going to have to do a lot more work. and some of these rural remote areas to get the power restored. so we're waiting for that to happen. but the good news is storations are taking place. the bad news is it's the winds and the rain that are hampering that progress. and we do have that storm system coming this morning that will probably slow down their work a little bit. but tomorrow i was talking with john. it looks like the winds are g to pull back quite a bit. and that really is the determining factor for getting those line crews upon polls and up in the cherry pickers. they have to wait for those winds to die down before they can really start tackling that repair work. and john, thankfully, it looks like you said tomorrow they might have that opportunity before saturday storm exactly. tomorrow is going to be a good day to get out there and brief moment. but a break between our next storm saturday night and then another to fall into monday. >> we do have another dose of heavy rain here in a matter of just an hour this morning. well, after that possible thunderstorm development into the afternoon. the afternoon. >> calming down this music (i swear) jaycee tried gain flings for the first time

be picking here in a few minutes. this does increase the risk of some standing water on roadways during the morning commute. it does roll through relatively quickly. but as with that, those quick winds that will be pushing it along with it. we do have storm reports mostly from last night and mostly as a result of the wind resulting in downed trees. chp has done a really good job of clearing up our highways, but do watch those brutal roadways as well as neighborhood streets where you can see branches down even a few trees down here and there as far as winds go, it is still breezy out there near beach, richmond, district daly city seeing some pretty impressive wind speeds right now. same for you up into the north bay campfield 36 miles per hour crossing the richmond center fell bridge running into 30 mile per hour. winds el sobrante saint pablo at 30 miles per hour east bay shoreline, comparatively a little calmer around 10 to 20 miles per hour for those winds currently south bay. a little on the calmer side to 10 to 20 miles per hour for you. well,

we had up the peninsula, some pockets of heavier wind, especially right around the airport for anyone departing there. yeah, maybe looking at some turbulence as you're getting your liftoff as we make our way through today. look at this. this is where we're headed. heavy pockets of rain fall through this next line of showers that pushes through 07:00am to 08:00am on the peninsula. could see some heavy downpours from this. one is a mention could see some localized flooding. a few ponding spots of water on roadways right in the heart of the morning commute. these will push through relatively quickly. but after them could see some isolated thunderstorms through the rest of the morning, interspersed by moderate rainfall through the early afternoon continuing to see this potential. those thunderstorms popping up with potential of heavy, isolated downpours that could pop up really quick without a lot of warning. we dry out steadily towards the latter part of the day. and by the evening tonight were really nice and calm tomorrow. a good day for recovery. getting back outside because our next system works its way in on saturday, especially towards saturday
5:49 am
evening by no means the ends of this wet pattern. we will see less than an inch of rain possible for the rest of the day. that's because that system moves its way through pretty quickly in those areas where you could see a thunderstorm, you may see an isolated pocket get a heavier dose than that. as for the rest of the forecast, by the time we reach the end of next week. well, a lot more rain ahead of us. so we are looking at this unsettled pattern only continuing flood risk across the bay. this last dose of heavy rain pushes through. we are seeing the russian river are receding now, but it will peak even higher likely come sunday acts after that next storm system makes its way through this weekend. high wind advisories for upper elevations this morning. and speaking of upper elevations, a winter storm warning in the sierra nevada remains through 04:00am tomorrow. multiple feet of snowfall continue to pile up up there. this is been a good snow maker of a storm because of colder air aloft. that's exactly what we need from the system's a lot of snow pack and we got it from this one. as for the rest of the forecast, it's upper 50's
