reporter to the scene and we'll bring you up-to-date us. more information comes in on this as the storm continues to move in. tens of thousands of pe ple are already without power across the bay area right now. kron 4 ella sogomonian is tracking the outages all over the bay area's joins us now with the latest ken pam, in just the last hour, we are already seeing a major difference from the last check. >> in the outages pg and e reported just a few minutes ago that more than 76,000 customers. >> are in the dark right now across the region. let's take a look at the pg e outage map and each color represents a different number of customers that are without electricity. really the largest numbers are the orange squares and the red triangle. so really close to where that gas station collapsed. the awning there, you can see in daly city and around the south san francisco area. we're seeing a lot of the power outages. the orange are between 500 to up to 4,999 customers. the red triangle represents 5,000 plus. so

there's a lot of that we're seeing coming out of that area. and most likely it's because of the strong wind and we are seeing most of the outages along the peninsula, some in the north bay, as you can see there with more orange squares and customers in the east bay, about 5,000 of them are without power. and in the south bay, we have 4,000 without power pt news warning customers of even more outages as this storm progresses. the vice president of the bay area region. aaron johnson spoke with us about what to expect. >> coming off the new year's storm. that storm affected almost 500,000 customers. almost all of handful of those customers have been restored to power except in those areas where we have access this storm. we are expecting similar amounts of rain and as you can see, a lot more wind than the last event. so there's the possibility of even more outages than in the last event. >> so i'm going to be tracking these outages all night long here on kron. 4 news.

meantime, stay safe out there in the newsroom. ella sogomonian kron. 4 news. >> thank you, ella. we want to take another look at kron four's radar again. you can see how widespread the rain is throughout the bay area right now. but a reminder that the yellow and the aren't on the map does indicate the areas where the downfall of the rainfall is coming down. the heaviest right now, areas where you need to be extremely careful, particularly if you're traveling, this might be the time to check on seniors and people who are not well in your community to make sure everybody is ok, otherwise officials want you to stay off. the roads will be to stay off. the roads will be right back. much more ahead.

>> now our 4 zone forecast. the breaking news, of course, a major storm rolling through the bay area right now. and the good news is it looks like operations at sfo are continuing. we don't know exactly how many delays there might be or even cancellations, but you can see aircraft are moving. >> at the airport. yeah. our justine waltman will be up shortly with more details on what's happening with the airports and other issues like that. but right now, our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. you're saying there's so many trees down. we can't even list yeah. almost almost numerous to count. i think we'll find out a lot more overnight tonight tomorrow as the sun comes up. >> i mean, that's going to cause a lot of damage all around. we've already seen numerous places where you see those trees coming down. and

yeah, the winds continuing with the cold front moving through san francisco just to the east now and heaviest rainfalls pushed along with warning zone now issued by the national weather service until 10:30pm, tonight warnings for flooding around much of the bay area. almost most of the bay area too. as we're going to see rapid rise in our local creeks and streams and even our streets, all that heavy rainfall. we've had some rain rates over 2 and a half inches with this storm system and really is a monster that is spinning off the coastline. we've got a long way to go. here's the cold front headed up toward the bay area. moving through right now. but on the backside, it's almost like spokes on a bike. you get one band come through. and then yet another band, another band. that's what's going to play out overnight tonight. so there's a long way to go to 9 when you see these storms roll through, there's a possibility of some thunderstorms. we've seen some lightning strikes embedded in the storm system so watching for that tonight and you can already begin to see another band of rain beginning to develop on the backside of this. and doppler just beginning to get an eye on it. but heavier storms now pushing into the east bay also

into the south bay right now as the storms move on through it is going to be intense evening here in the bay area. probably going to taper off a little bit after midnight. but then again, there are more storms after that. heavy rainfall now and a little more. hey, where you're seeing some heavy downpours. same with sam ramon also nanny often conquered little further north. it's beginning to taper off just a tad, but there's plenty more to come tonight to see right here on the forecast as we're going to see that storm system work its way through. but only see that next band of rain moving in as we head toward 8 o'clock tonight. very intense. you start to get the backside of this cold front. then you start to get some very unstable air and that's where we should see the rise of more thunderstorms and very heavy downpours. another one of those bands moves in at about 11 o'clock tonight as the rain comes through heavy rainfall, gusty winds as we're going to see more of that intense activity tonight. and as we head in toward tomorrow as well, more heavy rainfall for the commute early on tomorrow morning into the afternoon. i think things will begin to taper off a bit. but you get the idea these storms just

keep coming. water flooding going to be an issue all around the bay area. lawrence, an evacuation warning is in place for those living near the russian river in sonoma county. it's the area you see shaded in yellow. the map on your screen shows. >> the area healdsburg all the way to jenner down river road in sonoma county of sonoma county. sheriff says the river is expected to peak at 33 feet tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning. water level is expected to drop sometime tomorrow afternoon, but it will rise even higher sunday night. anyone who lives below the 40 foot flood level is asked right now to be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. have your go bags with your essential medicines and documents ready to go. this wild weather is causing road closures. it's been doing damage to cars and causing flight delays. justine waldman is live in our newsroom tonight. as we mentioned, she has that part of the story

just there are so many issues out there today. and we just got this new. >> information into the kron, 4 news room. there is a shelter in place in sandra fell from can out to bottle street because there are multiple blown transformers. >> and live high voltage wires that are down. so no vehicles or pedestrians are allowed in that area. and right now there's no eta of reopening. we're taking a live look here at sfo. according to fit the airport currently has a ground stop. this means air traffic control is slowing or stopping the flow aircraft inbound to sfo. the reason for this is high winds. flights are delayed now about an average 104 minutes. >> a very close call there in santa rosa tree came crashing down. you see it there right at the top of your screen. the sun, calistoga road. it appears to narrowly avoid hitting the passing cars. you see at the top one of our

viewers caught this on their home security video and they sent it to us here on kron 4. they tell us the people in both cars are ok and that the santa rosa fire department has already moved that tree out of the roadway. all lanes are blocked on highway 84 in niles canyon because of landslides. officials want drivers to avoid this area. if you have to go around, you can take a detour by using mission boulevard in fremont and then connect to the 6.80, freeway through town. crews are still working to clean up all this debris on the peninsula. person was hurt after a tree fell on their suv. this happened on linda mar boulevard in pacifica police. there are asking people to stay off the roads whenever possible, noting that they have had several calls for downed trees. crews also had to close down the east side of linda mar at adobe. while they cleared the area. and this is a new alert that we just got from a pacifica police. this

tweet just came out a large tree is down, blocking both lanes of southbound highway. one between palmetto avenue that on ramp and francisco boulevard off-ramp, caltrans and chp have been updated will work to get some more details here. and speaking of caltrans, they're warning drivers to avoid roadways if they can, until thursday. the agency has activated around 1200 of these signs in response to the storm today. drivers are also being asked to be aware and ready to move over if they see emergency crews. and remember, if you see standing water, use caution, it may be deeper. then it looks. so there's a lot of new travel delays coming into our newsroom. i'll keep you updated all night long right here from the kron. 4 news room. i'm justine waldman. back to justine. thanks for that. stay up to date for the latest weather conditions all week long scan that qr code. >> on your screen, it will take you to a special section of kron 4 dot com, which has the latest flood watches. traffic advisories. sandbag pick up spots and much more. and a reminder kron 4 will

continues tonight. a family rescued after a tree falls on their car. this happened in san francisco. this was earlier this evening on grove street near the civic center plaza. fire crews say >> the family is ok, the crews are working tonight to remove the downed tree. but as lawrence mentioned earlier, trees are falling all over the bay area requiring folks to be extra cautious about movements, whether they're in a car with a near power lines. you have to be extremely careful because this is a common sight tonight throughout the bay area. look around if you're parked and you're trying to move down the street, if you're driving, just kind of be aware of what's going on around you because

>> the soil saturated, the are susceptible to falling in the strong winds. so the last thing you want is have a big tree came crashing down on top of you. there is a pop-up shelter that's open now in san francisco for anybody who needs cover from the storm, the shelters at the county fair, a building that's at the corner of lincoln way and 9th avenue in golden gate park. it's near the botanical garden. the shelter will be open. 24 hours until january. 15th and is accepting walk-ins at any time. there are several other shelters available, but they have a limited number of spaces next door shelter, msc south and sanctuary will be accepting people on a first come first serve bases until 10 o'clock. tonight. saint mary's cathedral is accepting people and does not have a set in time. as of now. all right. take a look at the radar as we go to break to show you just where things stand with this storm rolling through the bay area, much of the worst of the first wave has passed through. >> but there's still a lot more to go. keep you posted.

>> continuing our breaking news coverage of the storm rolling through the bay area with a live look at the san mateo bridge. still a lot of traffic out but the camera looks fairly clear. it's kind of hard to judge with the mist in the air so on we're at the

end of the commute. so that's probably why there's still plenty of vehicle. let's hope they're moving our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow standing. but he just walked up. >> he was looking at the map and he said, oh, so we all perked up. there. so, you know, the storm system really get this intense. there are certain parts that can really develop quickly and seen that on the backside of the storm, the to what's called will voart max. and you see this little swirl developed right here on the backside. here we go right there. that's what we're watching for. that will likely intensify the rain here as we head toward. >> 8, 9 o'clock tonight. when you get on the backside to get some very strong instability, there's a possibility of thunderstorms embedded with that system as it starts to come onshore. you kind of get an idea of its and not the coastline, all that heavy rainfall moving into the east bay right now in parts of the south bay. but just off the coastline that board, max, i was just talking about. finally, the doppler radar start to pick up on some of that. the energy right now. so don't be surprised if you hear the rumble of thunder and see

some strong, a downdraft, some very gusty winds. we've already had a ton of wind reported around the bay area tonight. all right. long range forecast. want to show this to you. we've got just a series of storms still yet to come. so that's what makes his dangerous. we've had an atmospheric river event early on the week. we've got another now talking about flooding around the bay area, but we've got a long way to go tomorrow. showers likely to continue heavy showers in the morning. then we'll get a little bit of a break. but you see that's off the coastline. another one kind of a weak atmospheric river event possibly moving in as we head in towards saturday. that will bring another round of some rain in the bay area sunday. looks like we'll catch a little bit of a break, but then you can already see the set up the door. it's just wide open for the storms to come flowing through. so here we go. that next. when developing that could be another big event as we head in toward monday night into tuesday. more heavy rain and with each successive storm get a better chance of more flooding. and that includes the major rivers around the bay area. after that as we head toward late next week. guess what? they just keep coming impact. i'm looking at rain on and off right to about

the 21st of the month. maybe even longer so tremendous amounts of rain expected to fall over the next 24 hours. we're talking one to 2 inches. you're talking 3 to 6 inches across the higher peaks of maybe more than that in the santa cruz mountains. as we the way to the following friday, you start to just see some crazy amounts of rain, some places well over 10 inches of rain even in downtown temperatures, too. a cisco about 6 inches of rain or so. that is a lot of rain. that's just too much for many of the water ways to handle. guys, back to you. thank you. well, of course, aside from the weather, there are other new stories we are following this evening. yeah, it's been a busy day. kron four's. catherine heenan is here with a look at what else is in the news tonight. catherine? yeah. for starters, sales forecast as sales force in the news today because >> the software giant with headquarters in san francisco says it is cutting 10% of its workforce saying in part, we hired too many people. >> in october, the headcount of global employs was up to nearly 80,000. so we are

talking roughly 8,000 employees being cut. the tech sector generally was doing well during the pandemic. a big shift to online services that has been changing like other businesses, sales force has been dealing with everything from recession, fears inflation. people rethinking spending sales force now joins the list of other tech companies announcing companywide layoffs, including amazon and meta. the employees being cut are being told they'll get a minimum of nearly 5 months of pay health insurance and other benefits. we've got some positive news about buffalo bills player damar hamlin. he remains in critical condition in the icu after suffering cardiac arrest on the field during a game monday night. but he is said to be showing signs of improvement. that includes the fact his oxygen levels are better. doctors did not detail other positive signs other than to say they are seeing readings. they hope to see at last word, hamlin

was still sedated and will remain in the intensive care unit. and in congress. california's kevin mccarthy failed to get the job of house speaker despite a total now of 6 votes. 3 votes yesterday, 3 more today, roughly an hour ago. there was a vote to adjourn until noon tomorrow. there was even a trouble and bickering over getting that done far right. republicans were holding firm despite concessions, creating a deadlock, even an appeal today from former president trump for republican lawmakers to please vote for mccarthy that fell flat. so it all begins again tomorrow. and the mega-millions drama continues with the jackpot soaring to nearly a billion dollars after there was no winner last night. the next drawing is friday. a jackpot of 940 million and the more than 20 years since this game began, there have been just 3 jackpots that have been even bigger. the record is more than 1.5 billion, one by one
