>> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at not just students that were worried about think the teachers in the and must. >> tonight at 9 oakland unified schools and classrooms will be missing. more students and teachers tomorrow because of a planned, sick out organized by both faculty and students. good evening, everybody. thank you for joining us at 9. i'm pam moore and i'm ken wayne. some acorn woodland elementary school teachers organized a strike force. what they say is student safety tomorrow.

>> they're going to be demanding more kn 95 masks, weekly testing and more of these or similar included in a student petition that's going around the district students at several different schools say they won't return to classrooms until they have what they say are necessary resources. kron four's 10 per second has the story. >> classrooms across oakland unified school district have been missing students and staff the last few weeks today increasing covid cases and plans teacher sickouts. now students are following teacher footsteps and planning their own boycott this week until school leaders meet their demands. the main just that everybody's getting sick. mckayla dean is a student at mit west high school who participated in this student petition sent to district leaders last week included in this petition are demands for kn 95 masks for all students twice a week pcr and rapid testing for everyone on campus and more outdoor spaces to eat safely. according to a letter sent by the district to parents on monday, the

district says it's been able to meet most of those demands writing, quote, 200,000 kn 95 masks are being distributed to all schools to provide to students this week we have been installing more covered outdoor eating spaces since the fall. they've already gone in at numerous schools with more schools ready to have them installed. once we receive the necessary materials, some of which have been on back order for months. the school district says it's also providing on-site tests as frequently as possible with some schools getting on site testing twice a week and others once a week, however, until demands are fully met. they will not return to the classrooms. it simply but as they were missing. the meanwhile, teachers at several schools, including acorn, woodland elementary, are participating in a sick out on tuesday and aligning with student demands. well, some sites have received some of these resources is this has not been distributed equitably across our district. and this is why some of teachers and

are joining things dude in this fight for safer schools. teachers say the sickout is not sanctioned by the teacher union. >> which recently came to an agreement with the school district for extended covid leave. i'm taylor reporting kron. 4 news. the city of oakland will soon require people who are 12 and older to show proof of covid vaccination to enter indoor businesses. >> the mandate takes effect february 1st. the businesses will soon start posting notices of the change. it affects restaurants, concert venues and gyms, people 18 and older should be prepared to show id to be cross checked with a vaccination card. >> more covid coverage. now there is talk that some people are actually trying to purposely get the omicron variant. they think that they will become at noon and then can more easily move on with their lives before the chickenpox vaccine. some parents did the same thing. but as kron four's dan kerman reports, medical experts say this is a huge mistake. >> there's no good reason to

get this virus purposefully. here's every good reason to try and avoid it. >> infectious disease specialist doctor john swartzberg says trying to get the omicron variant with the idea of becoming immune and putting the pandemic behind you is a grave mistake. we know there's no assurance that if you had on the crime that you will get it again. there's evidence from the united kingdom in south africa that that's occurring. swartzberg says while most cases of omicron may be milder, there's no guarantee you won't be one of those to get very sick or if it is milder to pass it on to someone who is at higher risk, we still have so much in terms of how sick is going to make you acutely house, going to chronically. >> other things we may not even thought of yet. >> swartzberg says another reason not to actively seek out omicron is the risk of long covid. >> you may have a mild case of covid. but it may just not go away. it is the symptoms may

get better. you're sore throat, runny nose. your body aches? but the fatigue may persist. the cloud i'm thinking may persist other symptoms. one covid may persist indefinitely. this point, we just don't know. and that's what it comes down to. medical experts say we really still don't know enough about omicron to purposely go out and expose ourself. >> they say that just remains too much of a risk. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> moderna is hoping to market a triple combo booster for covid influenza and rsv. the company ceo says that the annual booster would prevent people from needing multiple shots ahead of the winter months, providing broad protection against the respiratory viruses. the flu vaccine portion is under development and uses and our and a technology like the covid shot moderna hopes to have the covid booster available by the fall of 2023.

tennis star novak arrived in his home country of serbia today after being deported from australia because he is unvaccinated against covid so that wanted to stay in the country and defend his grand slam title at the australian open. he argued in court that he should be allowed to play because he recently recovered from covid exempting him. he says from the country's strict vaccine policy after officials discovered the joke of his did not travel to australia directly from serbia. they cited public safety and public interest as the reasons they revoked his visa for the second time. >> for the upcoming winter olympics in beijing. no tickets will be sold to the general public. the concern continues to be the pandemic groups of spectators will be allowed at the games, but those tickets will be tightly controlled and distributed by government authorities. the audience will be residents of china's mainland and we'll have to abide by strict covid safety measures. china reported its first case of the omicron variant on saturday.

the beijing games begin february 4th. there's been a 3rd eruption from an underwater volcano near the island nation of tonga. this time no tsunami advisories have been issued here, australia and new zealand sent military flights to earlier today to try to assess the damage and bring supplies saturday's initial massive blast triggered a tsunami advisory for the entire u.s. west coast. 2 to 3 foot swells from saturday's eruption reached california shores yesterday. the hardest hit was santa cruz where there was some coastal flooding. san francisco, 2 surfers had to be rescued from strong rip currents. >> here in the bay area, family and friends of those living in tonga are still waiting for answers they are on is because communication lines there have been severed and that not only makes it hard for their loved ones who want to know how they're doing. but as kron four's, rob nesbitt tells us, it also makes it hard for people organizing relief for the island to know exactly what supplies are needed. there. >> just about every worker at

sf enterprises and logistics has a family member living in tonga. they, of course, want to help. but that's tough. when phone lines and internet and tonga are both down. i mean, we're sitting here worried as well. we haven't spoken in one since friday. cecilia, like people whose parents started that's at the enterprise is and logistics in oakland in the 70's after moving to the bay area from tonga, a country that's no stranger to tsunamis. but her family has yet to hear or see the devastation from one over the weekend. >> caused by an underground volcano so severe it was captured from above by satellite cameras. i don't know if the island. >> thought it was going to crazy because eruptions happened here and there ever get this traffic. i don't think they were expecting it sf enterprises in logistics and shipping containers to tonga throughout the year. >> workers are currently hustling to put together a relief container to ship out friday. >> to help tom gets affected by the tsunami. i know for sure the air quality is bad. water is going to be a big issue. so when people are calling now, i water. that's all i can gauge at the moment.

at some of low 40's on the board. livermore, a chilly 41 tonight, 40 degrees in concord, downtown san jose. 42. and then across the north, a low 40's napa, 40 degrees and santa rosa also dropping into the low 40's. we're going to just breezy conditions, light winds into the overnight hours tonight into tomorrow. but then tomorrow evening looks like the winds are going to pick up just a bit. so you might feel little bit of a difference tomorrow night versus what we're feeling now outside. so a long sleeves. make sure bundle up. but afternoon highs tomorrow. look at this. gorgeous again. lots of sunshine, 50's and 60's across the bay area. everywhere you look 60 degrees in concord. 58 for the high in downtown san francisco tomorrow. if you're going to be in the south bay, it looks like 60's across the board for you. mountain view, 60 degrees. 62 in san jose and 60 degrees in morgan hill. that's a look at the weather now. back to the news. all right. thank you. are back in the

south bay, a man who was hurt in a south san jose hit and run earlier this month. >> has died. it happened on center road just north of the capital expressway on january, 7th. police say the victim was walking outside a crosswalk when he was hit by a truck and the driver sped away before he could be identified. this mark san jose's 5th traffic deaths of the year. >> police in pleasant hill are asking for help from the public and finding a missing 15 year-old boy. brandon abbott is 5 feet. 6 inches tall, weighing 107 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes is believed the brandon vanished sometime between 10 o'clock sunday night and 9 o'clock in the morning today. anyone with information is asked to contact police the walnut creek city council is getting ready to try again to talk about whether planned parenthood needs a buffer zone. the city council first tried to talk about this issue back in november. but there were technical difficulties with the meeting. zoom link. the idea of a buffer zone was brought up after walnut creek.

police got 42 calls from the planned parenthood facility from january of 2020 to november of 2021, if approved, the buffer zone would create an area around the facility where protesters will not be allowed. it would be designed to guarantee the safety of employees and the patients higher ground neighborhood development corporation. it held its annual mlk day of service this morning in oakland. >> volunteers are out in the city's eves avenue area in east oakland, picking up trash. the majority of the people helping out there today were high school students and that made oakland's mayor pretty proud downpours, lso the moni and has more from the mare and how other bay area volunteers spent their holiday morning. to do today. >> and i hope everyone not only does something physical inactivity to celebrate. doctor martin luther king today that reflects what his legacy means, the work that we still have to do over in nearby richmond, the bay hills

church collected food donations that will be distributed worldwide. the effort called rise against hunger. but if it's those in need in regions, as far as central america. interesting about 10 years ago, i was on a trip to costa rica. >> and part of that trip, they took us to an elementary school and i had done this event before. and i rolled up to the school and they were telling us about the feeding program they have for the kids. want look at the boxes of food that they were distributing. it was rise against hunger. so i actually got to be on the front and seeing this from from 2.1 where we're putting the boxes together and then on the back and when the kids are actually getting the food in their stomachs and in palo alto, the oshman family jcc volunteers collected warm blankets for jewish seniors. >> organizers described it as a teaching moment for younger generations to learn to get and san francisco mayor london breed released a statement saying in part this year as we tackle the challenges that face us not only covid but racial inequities, social injustice and attacks on democracy. we must maintain

>> on this martin luther king junior day, vice president kamala harris is calling for action on voting rights. she's urging the senate to pass legislation. our washington correspondent basil, john reports that she and other lawmakers are using this day as a platform to fight for voting rights. >> good evening. the vice president and other lawmakers say it would be an insult to what the late martin luther king junior stood for. if the legislation does not pass today, our freedom to vote is under assault. vice president kamala harris demands action to protect voting rights. anti voter laws are being passed. that could make it more difficult for as many as 55 million americans to vote here is called on the senate to pass the freedom to vote act, to bolster voting by mail and prevent future voting restrictions. if we stand idly by. our entire nation, we'll pay the price for generations

>> a bay area family is in shock after learning their daughter was pushed in front of a new york city subway train and killed just weeks after celebrating her 40th birthday. the family of the woman who was killed and new york rity is now preparing her funeral york city. police say a homeless man pushed michelle go into the path of an oncoming subway kron four's.

jonathan mccall has the story. >> terror on the tracks and set of new york city's subway system. this was a senseless absolutely senseless act of violence. saturday morning. new york city police say that 40 year-old michelle alyssa go was pushed in front of an oncoming subway train by a man who police say was homeless and emotionally disturbed. it is heartbreaking, unbelievably heartbreaking, family and friends now remembering alyssa and say that she was an active volunteer, always giving back to others in need. she was amazing giving human being. you know, she spent a lot of time on teary eye here within your junior league. she volunteers with the unhoused. >> here in in in new york city kron 4 learned that go grew up in fremont. she graduated from american high school in 1998. before going on to graduate from ucl a then new york university. michelle turned 40 just 3 days after christmas and had recently traveled out

of the country to celebrate her birthday and the new year at the time of her death, she worked for the tax firm deloitte in new york city. in a statement her family said that, quote, we are in a state of shock, grieving the loss of our daughter, sister and friend. we hope that michelle will be remembered for how she lived in just not how she died. they went on to say that she was a beautiful, brilliant kind, intelligent woman who loved her friends and family. her life was taken too soon in a senseless act of violence. and we pray that she gets the justice she deserves. that hours after michelle's death, police arrested 61 year-old son marshall. >> a person who they say has a very long and extensive criminal record monday, investigators charged with second-degree murder in goes death. investigators say as of now, it doesn't appear that marshall intentionally targeted michelle because of her race. detectives say just moments before he tried to push someone else. the news,

lives cut horrible tragedy as the caskets were carried out to mourners were overcome. >> one collapsing as she waited for medical attention this day. a sad conclusion to a week of tragedy in the concourse section of the bronx. allison kaden. >> meantime, hundreds of mourners paid their final respects to the 9 children and 3 adults who were killed in a philadelphia duplex fire earlier this month. all of the victims were on the 3rd floor of the brick building when the fire broke out on january. 5th, the duplex is owned by the philadelphia housing authority. that's the city's public housing agency. there are reports that a child playing with a lighter near christmas tree is responsible for that devastating blaze. >> the parents of one of the 6 workers killed in an amazon warehouse collapse after tornadoes tore through illinois last month have filed a lawsuit against the company in a news conference held via zoom today. they allege amazon opted not to evacuate workers from the facility in a timely

manner as it sought to keep them fulfilling orders. reporter kelley hoskins has the story. >> the family of 26 year-old also mckeown filed a wrongful death lawsuit today against amazon in the 2 companies can tag rat construction company and tri star properties claiming they were negligent leading up to the deadly warehouse collapse last month. but un was one of 6 workers killed december. the 10th when a tornado hit the amazon distribution center. the lawsuit accuses the companies of not building the 4 year old warehouse up to code and not including a basement. they allege that this building was built to code. we do not know affirmatively if that was true. >> but regardless of we certainly know in different areas of the country, a certain areas can be prone to severe inclement weather. amazon is taking the position that those that survived were sheltering and there's a significant difference between sheltering and being given a proper storm shelter for those. but fortunately did survive this horrible tragedy

that happened to be on the north end of the building. there's no evidence whatsoever that this building at an appropriate basement shelter or a storm shelter. and unfortunately, austin mchugh and 5 others are on the south side of the building, a shelter at the direction of amazon in a bathroom and all this could have been avoided. had amazon keeping these possible tornado warnings with sincerity throughout the day as the warnings intensified, these workers should have never been at this for filming center. we spent the past month help us sort of cause. >> and how a tornado was coming that made the decision to have our son and others work during peak delivery season for amazon instead of evacuating the area area with no storm shelter in place. in an afternoon virtual news conference, clifford law office. >> who filed a lawsuit on behalf of the family also accuses amazon of not taking further precautions before se ere weather, including training employees on what to do in an emergency and having

an alarm warning system in place. it had been well known as early as almost 04:00am on december 9th. >> 2021 that southwestern illinois, which would, of course, include at which bills was at risk of severe inclement weather as early as december. 9 tornadoes were noted to be possible and that amazon did nothing to warn these employees. and then there's further evidence in this case through a bbc article that was in fact, amazon management that directed austin and 5 other people to shelter in the bathroom when amazon through its own training should know that that's not a proper shelter. >> but un did not work for amazon was a contract. a delivery driver who work with the company to make deliveries from the warehouse in edwardsville. amazon set the lawsuit misunderstand key facts about differences of severe weather and tornado alerts. it said the building met all coats, amazon by statement said we believe our team did the right thing as soon as the warning was issued

sunshine that we're going to be seeing into the afternoon dry conditions that we're going to continue to see with the temperatures pretty mild for tomorrow. so very similar to what we saw today. the week ahead. it's going to feel more like spring as we get towards the end of the week. and it's all thanks to high pressure that continues to stick around the bay area for the next 7 days or so. keeping that wet weather away from us. temperatures outside right now. still still changing, still dropping a bit 40's and 50's that we're currently seeing. 48 in palo alto right now. 49 in dublin and 48 in concord, low 40's in napa right now at 41. 43 degrees currently in fairfield. for those temperatures are going to drop even more. so as we get towards of the latter part of the evening future cast for the extended forecast. we're going to be seeing and not a whole lot of action as far as the wet weather goes around the bay area, we're going to be a seeing a lot of sunshine, southern california, seeing some rain and then to the far north of us in oregon and

parts of washington, they're going to be seeing some wet weather. but we're going to remain dry here for the next week or so. and again, you can see thanks to the high pressure that's keeping all that so wet weather away from the bay area. so we'll enjoy the sunshine while we can. and it's going to be that way into the weekend. now, those chilly temperatures that i was talking about. 41 degrees for the overnight low in livermore tonight expected 40 in concord, low 40's into napa in double-a home nevado. you'll be in the low 42. so some really chilly temperatures on the board that we're going to be seeing over the next couple of hours. we're also going to see a little bit of a breeze in the air during the overnight hours into tomorrow morning. and then winds are going to pick up just a bit as we get into tomorrow evening. so it might feel a little bit chilly versus what we're feeling tonight. even more so temperatures, though, if you like today, tomorrow is going to be much of the same 50's and 60's that we're seeing very evenly spread. temperatures no matter where
