long night across the country, as one of the most highly contested midterm elections is now behind us. the controversial trump presidency has animated voters on both sides of the aisle. and 20-18 is likely to set turnout records for a midterm election. the democrats won control of the house for the first time since 20-10. while the republicans maintained control of the senate. karen (ákay- fuhá) caifa is in washington with more. get ready for get ready for a new dynamic here in washington starting in january. democrats, locked out of power after the 20-16 presidential election, set to take back one chamber on capitol hill.but republicans -- flipping some key seats, to keep the senate. democrats -- projected to take

san francisco (kron) - gavin newsom has won the race for governor of california, cnn projects.newsom beat out republican candidate john cox and was the favorite to win governor.cox's platform was the repeal of the gas tax, but it ultimately did not resonate with voters.newsom's victory ensures one opponent of trump, outgoing gov. jerry brown, will be replaced by another. "we're saying unmistakably and in unison that it's time to roll the credits on the politics of chaos and the politics of cruelty," newsom told supporters at a nightclub in downtown los angeles. "now is the time for decency, for facts, for trust, and now is the time for truth. now is time for leaders to lead."video he did not mention trump by name, but his remarks were aimed squarely at the president.newsom presented california as "america's coming attraction," extolled the state's diversity, innovative businesses and thriving economy, and urged americans dispirited with political polarization to look toward the golden state."this, in every way, shape or form is california's moment," newsom said.newsom defeated republican john cox with a pledge to spur a rapid bump in housing construction, bring about universal health care and help impoverished children. he'll replace gov. jerry brown, one of trump's chief antagonists.newsom led cox 57 percent to 43 percent with about 4.2 million votes counted.for the past eight years newsom has been lieutenant governor, a position with almost no power. before that, as san francisco mayor, he rocketed into the global spotlight when he ordered the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples when it wasn't legal. newsom, 51, promised similarly

( robin ) ( robin ) a state proposition we followed closley was proposition 6... where voters chose whether to repeal an increase in gas taxes and vehicle fees.... proposition- six was backed by republicans who say, life in california has become too expensive... while the legislature ... led by democrats... passed the 12- cent gallon tax measure last year. a yes vote would have repealed that. but as charles clifford tells us... supporters of the gas tax are optimistic after last night's

addresses how hospitals in the state care for children passed by a significant margin. ( robin ) which means the state could use 1.5 billion dollars to build, expand and renovate children's hospitals. that money would be paid back over 35 years... at 80 million dollars a year. ( robin ) california voters decided on 11- propositions last night. several of them are hotly contested races.. such as prop ten. which decides whether to allow the expansion of rent control ... as a solution to the state's housing crisis. kron4's michelle kingston has more. sacramento (kron) - a

controversial ballot measure would deal with california's affordable housing crisis by removing restrictions on rent control.this is a very controversial issue on the november ballot.both supporters and opponents of prop 10 have spent millions of dollars on advertisements.the price of rent could soon be in the control of local governments if proposition 10 passes.the measure repeals the costa-hawkins rental housing act, which prohibits rent control on single-family homes and only allows rent control for buildings built before 1995."i have lived in a rent control apartment as a teacher in san francisco, and if it wasn't for that, i wouldn't have had a home there," california teacher's association president eric heins said.heins is also an elementary school teacher.he says rising rents often force workers to move far away from their jobs."it's forcing out families and forcing working folks out of their homes, and it's because of predatory landlords wanting to raise profits because they've been able to," heins said.the coalition of affordable housing, along with some landlords, worry that rent control could lower property values."we think the ballot measure is terribly flawed, poorly written and it won't do anything about the supply and demand problem," coalition of affordable housing board member patrick sabelhaus said. opponents also argue the measure will slow down construction of new homes. "again, we have empathy for the problems those people are facing, but we think prop 10 is not a solution," sabelhaus said. "we think it's just going to make the problem worse."according to zillow, the median rent price in the u.s. is $1,300.california's is $2,000.on average, californians spend about a third of their income rent.

( robin) the most money has been spent on prop eight. that's the measure that would regulate kidney dialysis companies. dialysis companies... spening more than 100 million dollars to defeat prop eight. and it appears to have worked. ( robin ) if it would have passed... clinics would have had to treat patients regardless of how those patients are paying. but supporters of prop 8 told us last night that they are still optimistic and plan to challege it. ( robin ) proposition 11 --- which requires private sector ambulances company e-m-t's to stay on duty while on meal and rest breaks passed last night. ( robin ) a no vote on prop 11 would have meant that private ambulance companies will be governed by labor laws... meaning... based on a recent legal ruling... the companies would have to give their paramedics meal and rest breaks that cannot be interrupted by a 911 call.

( robin ) the housing crisis in the bay area... and across the state... was a big issue on the ballot tuesday. with several measures focused on trying to ease the crisis and offer some relief. ( robin ) let's start with measure 'o...' the berkeley housing bonds. which passed with an overwhelming 74 percent. it authorizes the city to issue up to 135-million dollars in bonds to help low income and working families with housing... at a cost of an estimated tax rate of 23 dollars per 100-thousand dollars in assessed property value. ( robin ) the san jose housing bond measure also passed easily. it authorizes the city to issue up to 450- million dollars to help in housing... with an estimated tax rate of 8 cents per 1- thousand assessed property value. ( robin ) and finally lets look at state proposition 2... the "no place like home act," which also passed. it

authorizes the state to use revenue from an older proposition that passed, to help pay for 2-billion dollars in revenue bonds, for housing for homeless in need of mental health services. their majority. gavin newsom has defeated john cox to become california's next governor. and dianne feinstein held on to win another term in the senate. ( robin ) gavin newsom has won the governors election. newsom held his victory party in downtown los angeles last night. he took the stage just after 10 last night to give his acceptance speech joined by his wife and kids. he also thanked jerry brown for all he did as governor, but said there is still a lot to be done. ( robin ) in addition to the race for governor... californian's voted to fill all of the top state elective offices. in the race for lieutenant governor between two democrats... eleni kounalakis is the clear winner. she is a former u-s diplomat. she ran against ed hernanadez. in the race for secretary of state democrat alex padilla running against republican mark meuser from the east bay. as it stands padilla has

the lead. and finally e race for the state's attorney general is between current a-g xavier becerra and steven bailey. right now the polls are leaning to becerra. ( robin )oakland's incumbent mayor libbby schaaf has won re-election.schaaf is running against nine other people. kron4's alecia reid was at her acceptance speech and has more. mayor libby schaaf led the pack since the schaaf led the mayor libby mayor libby schaaf led the pack since the beginning of the race and the gap continued to widen. even with rank choice voting, she was way ahead.since starting her re- election campaign mayor schaaf said she wasn't taking anthing for granted.and sure enough, she was out on the streets today talking to voters ..... up to the very last minute ... volunteers were busy on the phone lines urging people to vote.libby schaaf has made a name for herself here in oakalnd.the took over at a time when the oakland police department was dealing with a slew of sex scandals. she has also made national headlines taking on president donald trump ... after announicng immigration raids before they happened.she's also had her share of opponents .... that say she's too friendlt to developers, and lenient on the

police department.from her work over the last 4 years ... mayor schaaf has gotten endorsements from outgoing governor jerry brown and projected winner gavin newsom. one of her platforms .... addressing homelessness head on.clearly the most pressing problem right now is homelessness. i'll be focusing my first hours in the new term with the unsheltered residents. hearing gtheir needs, and the way the city is helping them get off the street and a path to self sufficiency.standupmayor schaaf is also heading the campaign for measure "aa" ..... an early childhood and preschool initiativeit will expand early childhood and preschool education ...and fund programs to improve jhigh school graduation and college readiness.reporting live from oakland ... alecia reid .. kron 4 news. morning...sentencing is set next month for the man who raped a 12-year-old napa county girl multiple times. jurors in sonoma county convicted 52-year-old timothy marble of several felony sex offenses monday afternoon. that trial lasted about two weeks. marble met the child at a gas station and invited her to take a ride with him. she says he injected her with drugs, and then repeatedly beat and sexually assaulted her. the victim was able to get away by jumping out of the moving car. marble is now

facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. ( robin ) a ban on flavored tobacco including vaping products will soon go into effect in marin county. tuesday, the board of supervisors voted to prohibit specialty tobacco stores from selling flavored tobacco products, vaping liquids, and menthol cigarettes starting in january 2020. all other retailers will have to stop selling the products july 1st of next year. the move comes after data reveraled that kids using e-cigarettes doubled in the past two years. ( robin ) police in walnut creek are looking for the man who robbed a business in the area this week. it happened at -destination maternity- on mount diablo boulevard. police say the man pointed a gun at an employee and then got away with money from the cash register. no one was hurt during the robbery. ( robin ) we've been focusing a lot on the bay area and california this morning, but lets take a moment and check out some of the high profile races around the country. starting on the east coast where new comer alexandra o-casio-cortez won her congressional seat, making the "democratic socialist" the youngest woman to ever serve in congress at just 29-years- old.

(d) new york congressional candidate:"when i started this campaign a year ago. i was working in a restaurant in downtown manhattan. and it wasn't because we had launched this campaign because i thought i was special or unique or better than anyone else. we launched this campaign because in the absence of anyone giving a clear voice on the moral issues of our time then it is up to us to voice that.">( robin )o-casio-cortez became a national political figure when she defeated new york democratic representative joe crowley in the primary earlier this year.it was considered a stunning victory -- as crowley was the number four democrat in the house. ( robin )from an ultra liberal winning, to an ultra conservative.iowa representative steve king won his re-election big last night. his victory comes after king was criticized by his own republican colleagues over his

comments questioning the value of diversity in the u-s.

this country in a way that brings us back together around the big things we want to achieve. /// i want to work with him, i would work with anyone to make sure we can lead on that.">( robin ) this will be cruz' second term in the senate. during his victory speech, cruz said - texas is backing a common sense agenda of low taxes, low regulations, lots of jobs, and securing thborder. ( robin ) and it looks like florida's governor seat will also remain red.republican ron de-santis defeated democrat andrew gillum.the battle for florida was one of the most closely watched governor's races in the country.gillum, the mayor of tallahassee, was hoping to become florida's first african-american governor.but de-santis, who represented florida in the u-s house for more than five years, played off his public support from president trump to win over voters.de-santis

replaces republican incumbent rick scott, who is a running for a u-s senate seat. ( robin ) one national story of interest from a rather small race in kentucky. it involves a clerk who gained national attention a few years ago... kim davis -- the rowan county, kentucky clerk who went to jail back in 2015 for refusing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. tonight she lost her bid for a second term. davis lost the race by 8 points.she was actually elected as a democrat ... but left the party after saying they "abandoned" her.she was beaten by democrat elwood caudill junior. davis claimed to be acting under "god's authority" when she refused to issue marriage licenses just days after the u.s. supreme court ruled that the. consitution guarantees same sex couples the right to marry.she was released from jail after her staff begain issuing licenses in her

voters deciding on 11- propositions. several of them are hotly contested races.. such as prop ten.( darya ) which decided which decided whether to allow the expansion of rent control ... as a solution to the state's housing crisis. kron4's michelle kingston has more. sacramento (kron) - a controversial ballot measure would deal with california's affordable housing crisis by removing restrictions on rent control.this is a very controversial issue on the november ballot.both supporters and opponents of prop 10 have spent millions of dollars on advertisements.the price of rent could soon be in the control of local governments if proposition 10 passes.the measure repeals the costa-hawkins rental housing act, which prohibits rent control on single-family homes

and only allows rent control for buildings built before 1995."i have lived in a rent control apartment as a teacher in san francisco, and if it wasn't for that, i wouldn't have had a home there," california teacher's association president eric heins said.heins is also an elementary school teacher.he says rising rents often force workers to move far away from their jobs."it's forcing out families and forcing working folks out of their homes, and it's because of predatory landlords wanting to raise profits because they've been able to," heins said.the coalition of affordable housing, along with some landlords, worry that rent control could lower property values."we think the ballot measure is terribly flawed, poorly written and it won't do anything about the supply and demand problem," coalition of affordable housing board sabelhaus said.opponents also argue the down construction of new homes."again, we have empathy for the ( darya )san francisco voters voted in favor of proposition c. the measure won by 60- percent... and promises to tackle the city's homeless crisis... by raising atleast

( darya ) the housing crisis in the bay area... and across the state... was a big issue on the ballot tuesday. with several measures focused on trying to ease the crisis and offer some relief. let's start with measure 'o...' the berkeley housing bonds. which passed with an overwhelming 74 percent. it authorizes the city to issue up to 135-million dollars in bonds to help low income and working families with housing... at a cost of an estimated tax rate of 23

dollars per 100-thousand dollars in assessed property value. the san jose housing bond measure also passed easily. it authorizes the city to issue up to 450-million dollars to help in housing... with an estimated tax rate of 8 cents per 1-thousand assessed property value. and finally lets look at state proposition 2... the "no place like home act," which also passed. it authorizes the state to use revenue from an older proposition that passed, to help pay for 2- billion dollars in revenue bonds, for housing for homeless in need of mental health services. ( james ) the most money has been spent on prop eight. that's the measure that would regulate kidney dialysis companies. dialysis companies... spening more than 100 million dollars to defeat prop eight. and it appears to have worked. if it would have passed... clinics would have had to treat patients regardless of how those patients are paying. but supporters of prop 8 told us last night that they

are still optimistic and plan to challege it. ( james ) proposition 11 --- which requires private sector ambulances company e-m-t's to stay on duty while on meal and rest breaks passed last night. a no vote on prop 11 would have meant that private ambulance companies will be governed by labor laws... meaning... based on a recent legal ruling... the companies would have to give their paramedics meal and rest breaks that cannot be interrupted by a 911 call. ( darya ) oakland imcumbent mayor libby schaaf has won re-election. schaaf ran against nine other candidates. schaaf said for her re-election she wasn't going to take anything for granted and that up until the last minute volunteers were busy on the phones urging people to vote. one of her biggest platforms was addressing the homless issues in oakland head on. ( darya ) the campaign on measure a-a an

early childhood and preschool initiative aimed at expanding preschool education and for programs to improve high school graduation and college readiness. ( darya ) prop 4... which addresses how hospitals in the state care for children paed by a significant margin. among the pediatric hospitals set pediatric hospitals set to benefit from prop four... are u-c-s-f, childrens hospital oakland, stanford's lucile packard and several others in the u-c system. which means the state could use 1.5 billion dollars to build, expand and renovate children's hospitals. that money would be paid back over 35 years... at 80 million dollars a year. ( james ) while some voters lined up at the polls another crowd gathered at john's grill in san francisco for the annual election day lunch hosted by former san francisco mayor and assemblyman willie brown. the non-partisan event started in the 19-80s and went away

for awhile after the original founder passed away but was resurrected again in 20-15 by brown. hundreds of people gathered for the free luncheon including those running for local and statewide office.

( darya ) ( darya ) p-g-and-e is turning off power for customers in nine counties because of fire danger conditions. customers in several counties including lake, napa, and sonoma could be without power starting tomorrow. p-g-and-e says strong winds, and low humidity levels are amg the reasons why it may turn off power.

the company say it has notified residents in all of the counties. p-g-and-e says it will continue to monitor conditions. ( darya ) no criminal charges will be filed against the deputy who fired shots at the suspect in the deadly shooting at the yountville veterans home in march. the napa county district attorney's office says it didn't find any criminal liability against deputy steven lombardi. back in march, authorities say lombardi fired shots through a door where he last saw the suspect, albert wong. the d-a's office says none of the shots fired by lombardi hit wong, or the three women he was holding hostage. authorities say wong shot the mental health professionals after he was recently expelled from the pathway home program. morning... sentencing is set next month for the man who raped a 12-year-old napa county girl multiple times. jurors in sonoma county convicted 52-year-old timothy marble of several felony sex offenses monday afternoon. that trial lasted about two weeks. marble met the child at a gas station and invited her to take a ride with him. she says he injected her with drugs, and then repeatedly beat and sexually assaulted her. the victim was able to get away by jumping out of the moving car. marble is now facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. ( james ) a ban on flavored tobacco including vaping products will soon go into effect in marin county. tuesday, the board of supervisors voted to prohibit specialty tobacco stores from selling flavored tobacco products, vaping liquids, and menthol cigarettes starting in january 2020. all other retailers will have to stop selling the products july 1st of next year. the move comes after data reveraled that kids using e-cigarettes doubled in the past two years. creek are looking for the man who robbed a maternity in the area this week. it happened at -destination maternity- on mount diablo boulevard. police say the man pointed a gun at an employee and then got away with money from the cash register. no one was hurt during the robbery. ( darya ) in his victory speech governor-elect gavin newsom took shots at president trump and vows to not back down on the presidents policies.( james ) kron4's j-r stone was in los angeles with more on his acceptance speech. gavin newsom has won the race for governor of california, cnn projects.newsom beat out republican candidate john cox and was the favorite to win governor.cox's platform was the repeal of the gas tax, but it ultimately did not resonate with voters.newsom's victory ensures one opponent of trump, outgoing gov. jerry brown, will be replaced by another. newsom defeated republican john cox with a pledge to spur a rapid bump in housing construction, bring about universal health care and help impoverished children. he'll replace gov. jerry brown, one of trump's chief antagonists. "this is a state where, you know, we don't criminalize diversity, we celebrate diversity. we don't reject, we protect the most vulnerable. we don't put profit and loss ahead of clean air. we don't put profit and loss ahead of clean water and clean

( james ) now more on gavin newsom ... who is going to be california's next governor. newsom held his victory party in downtown los angeles last night. he took the stage just after 10 last night to give his acceptance speech joined by his wife and kids. during his speech newsom lashed at president trump and his immigration policy.

( darya ) ( darya ) ( darya ) a fire is still burning at the recology recycling center in san francisco. the fire started around 2 yesterday morning and the smoke caused some problems for people in the area. it triggered an air quality advisory ... which

urged people to stay inside with their doors and windows closed. classes at visatacion valley middle school were cancelled due to all the smoke in the air. a mother says the daycare she works at ... also took steps to keep kids away from the smoke. < we're keeping the children in because it is smoke and we made sure we closed all the windows>( darya ) so far no injuries have been reported. firefighters from san francisco and brisbane are working together to put out the fire. ( darya ) no criminal charges will be filed against the deputy who fired shots at the suspect in the deadly shooting at the yountville veterans home in march. the napa county district attorney's office says it didn't find any criminal liability against deputy steven lombardi. back in march, authorities say lombardi fired shots through a door where he last saw the suspect, albert wong.

authorities say wong shot the mental health professionals after he was recently expelled from the pathway home program. the d-a's office says none of the shots fired by lombardi hit wong, or the three women he was holding hostage. ( james ) new this morning... sentencing is set next month for the man who raped a 12-year-old napa county girl multiple times. jurors in sonoma county convicted 52-year-old timothy marble of several felony sex offenses monday afternoon. that trial lasted about two weeks. marble met the child at a gas station and invited her to take a ride with him. she says he injected her with drugs, and then repeatedly beat and sexually assaulted her. the victim was able to get away by jumping out of the moving car. marble is now facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. ( james ) a ban on flavored tobacco including vaping products will soon go into effect in marin county. the board of supervisors has voted to prohibit specialty tobacco stores from selling flavored tobacco products,

vaping liquids, and menthol cigarettes starting in january 2020. all other retailers will have to stop selling the products july 1st of next year. experts say the number of teens using e-cigarettes has doubled in the past two years. ( darya ) police in walnut creek are looking for the man who robbed a maternity in the area this week. it happened at -destination maternity- on mount diablo boulevard. police say the man pointed a gun at an employee and then got away with money from the cash register. no one was hurt during the robbery. ( darya ) happening tomorrow... the san francisco giants will hold a public ceremony honoring baseball legend, willie mccovey. mccovey's celebration of life event will take place at 11:30 a-m at at&t park... and will include members of mccovey's family. mccovey died last wednesday of ongoing health issues. guests are urged to take public transportation because stadium parking will not be available. public
