[ boos ] >> party politics. hard-line republican marjorie taylor greene tries and fails to oust house speaker mike johnson. the support he got from an unlikely ally. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. people are waking up this morning to assess the damage after another night of powerful storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc across the u.s. three people were killed, two in tennessee and one in north carolina. just look at the damage that was left behind here. there were two tornado emergencies, that is the national weather service's highest alert level. one south of nashville,

tennessee, and another east of huntsville, alabama. here's cbs' roxana saberi. >> reporter: once again a tornado threat became reality across the midsection of the country. >> power flash. >> reporter: up north tornadoes tore across the midwest tuesday. >> that's a big one. >> reporter: at least three confirmed in michigan prompting the first-ever tornado emergency. in the cross hairs, kalamazoo county where 176 homes were damaged or destroyed. the city of portage took a direct hit not once but twice in less than an hour and a half. an ef-2 twister with winds of 135 miles per hour mangled this fedex facility. authorities tell cbs news everyone inside was able to escape by the time rescuers arrived. this doorbell camera captured the moment a tornado toppled nearly every tree in sight. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: a few miles away, a twister slammed pavillion estates splintering several

mobile homes and injuring at least 12 people. the sound of chainsaws filled the air as residents began cleaning up. the force of the first tornado was so strong it wrapped multiple homes around this tree. so your trailer was here? >> my trailer was here. now it's over there. yes. >> reporter: that's your trailer? gerald brooks says he survived by hiding in his closet. >> i just said a couple prayers and just curled up in a ball. it was probably about ten seconds i was in the air. >> reporter: you think if you weren't in the closet -- >> i don't think i would have been here. >> reporter: the red cross has opened an emergency shelter to help families displaced by the tornadoes that ripped through neighborhoods like this. the family living in this house told us they had to move out, and now they're just waiting for their home to collapse. roxana saberi, cbs news, portage, michigan. this wild weather is not over yet. nearly 60 million americans are in the path of today's powerful storms.

it's pounding parts of the deep south this morning, then more ignite this afternoon over texas and race eastward. there will be destructive winds along the -- along with isolated hailstorms and a chance of more twisters. and now to the middle east and president biden's stern warning to israel. the u.s. is ready to halt more shipments of bombs if israeli troops launch a full-scale assault on rafah. the idf has already begun a series of targeted ground and air attacks there aimed at cutting off hamas' weapons smuggling. israel has also seized control of an important humanitarian aid crossing which it says it's reopened. aid groups say nothing is getting through the gaza side yet because of safety concerns. jarred hill is joining us now with the latest. what's going on? >> you know, these are some of the most blunt and direct comments we've heard from president biden regarding his criticisms of how israel is conducting the war this gaza.

really showcasing the growing tensions between him and the israeli prime minister. president biden issued a warning to israel last night on cnn saying the u.s. will withhold some weapons if israel fully invades rafah. >> i've made it clear to the war cabinet, they're not going to get our support if in fact they go in these population centers. >> reporter: days ago israel launched a series of targeted strikes around the city in southern gaza calling it a hamas stronghold. yesterday, defense secretary lloyd austin told lawmakers the u.s. has already paused an earlier shipment of thousands of bombs, noting the risk they pose to innocent palestinians. >> our focus is on making sure that we protect the civilians. >> reporter: austin said the biden administration is still determining what to do with the shipment, though the president made clear that the u.s. is not turning its back on its ally. >> we're not walking away for -- from israel's security. we're walking away from israel's abilities to wage war in those

areas. >> reporter: israel has publicly downplayed the pause, but privately israeli officials have expressed deeper frustration to cbs. roughly 1.5 million palestinians have taken refuge in rafah since the fighting began seven months ago. the rafah crossing with egypt closed this week after israel seized control of the gaza side. now fears are growing over the backup of crucial humanitarian aid on the egyptian side. israel says it has reopened the vital kerem shalom crossing days after a hamas rocket attack killed four israeli troops. the u.s., egypt, and qatar are ramping up efforts to broker at least a temporary cease-fire agreement. cia director william burns has been bouncing around the region for talks the past couple of days. he met with prime minister netanyahu yesterday and is due back in cairo today. >> the eyes of the world are watching. thank you so much. stormy daniels is back on the witness stand today in president trump's so-called hush-money trial. his defense team will continue to cross -- cross-examination of

the adult film star on. tuesday daniels gave vivid details of her sexual encounter with trump and the alleged hush-money payments he gave her in advance of the 2016 election. meantime, a victory for trump in georgia regarding his 2020 election interference case. it will now likely be delayed. the state appeals court agreed to review a lower court ruling that allowed fulton county district attorney fani willis to oversee the case. trump has argued willis' relationship with then-special prosecutor nathan wade caused a conflict of interest. willis has blasted the accusations as politically motivated. democrats joined republicans in an overwhelming vote to defeat a motion to remove house speaker mike johnson from his leadership position. cbs' skyler henry reports from washington. >> reporter: congressman mike johnson easily survived an effort to oust him as house speaker. >> i want to say that i appreciate the show of confidence from my colleagues to defeat this misguided effort.

>> the democrats saved him. nancy pelosi voted for him. >> reporter: democrats and republicans worked together to quickly put down marjorie taylor greene's bid to vote on removing johnson from the house gop leadership. >> the forum of the resolution is as follows -- declaring the office of speaker of the house of representatives to be vacant -- [ booing ] >> reporter: only 11 republicans voted in favor of going ahead with a vote on the proposal. >> the only people who have stymied our ability to govern are the very people that have pulled these types of stunts throughout the course of this congress to undermine the house republican majority. >> it was a vote of conscience. it was overwhelming. it was decisive, and we need to move forward as a congress to solve problems for everyday americans. >> reporter: the dramatic moments on capitol hill came weeks after johnson sparked ire among right-wing republicans by pushing through a national security package that included

billions of dollars in aid to ukraine. >> hopefully this is the end of the personality politics and the frivolous character assassination that has defined the 118th congress. >> reporter: ahead of the vote on johnson, former president donald trump said on social media with the november elections approaching, now is not the time to oust the speaker. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. robert f. kennedy jr.'s camp confirmed doctors found a dead worm in his brain. the comments come after "the new york times" reported he said in 2012 in a deposition that a parasitic worm ate a portion of his brain and may have caused cognitive issues. a kennedy spokesperson said the issue was resolved more than ten years ago and that he is robust -- is in robust physical and mental health. coming up, fatal shooting. a florida airman killed after deputies allegedly burst into the wrong apartment. and nose down. a fedex cargo plane makes a rough landing.

some scary moments as a fedex cargo plane made an emergency landing in istanbul, turkey. the boeing 767 created sparks and dust as it touched down after its landing gear failed. the emergency crews doused the aircraft with water and foam, and no one was hurt. shohei ohtani's former interpreter agrees to cop a plea, and an airman killed by an officer's gun. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports an attorney says florida deputies who fatally shot a u.s. airman burst into the wrong apartment. attorney ben crump says senior airman roger fortson was in his off-base apartment in fort walton beach when someone knocked on the door and didn't announce themselves. he says fortson retrieved his gun, and that's when deputies burst through the door, saw he was armed and shot him six times.

fortson died at the hospital. the deputy involved in the shooting was placed on leave pending an investigation. the "los angeles times" says shohei ohtani's former interpreter has agreed to plead guilty to stealing $17 million. ippei mizuhara admitted to stealing the cash from the japanese baseball star to cover gambling debts that he allegedly owed a california bookmaker. he was ordered to pay $17 million in restitution to ohtani. he also must pay more than $1 million fine to the irs for filing a false tax return. mizuhara faces up to 33 years in federal prison. and "usa today" reports police have apprehended a person following a break-in at drake's toronto home. police were called to the rapper's home yesterday afternoon because someone had tried to gain access to the property. this incident comes after a shooting near drake's home earlier this week that left one of his security guards seriously injured. the motive in that incident is unclear.
