>> four law enforcement officers shot and killed in the line of duty. the charlotte community now in mourning as police piece together what went wrong. campus chaos. breaking overnight, pro-palestinian protesters break in and take over a columbia academic building hours after the university started handing out suspensions. closing in on a deal. hamas said to be considering the latest offer to release some of the israeli hostages in exchange the israeli hostages in exchange for a temporary cease-fire. captioning funded by cbs well, good well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the shoot-out and standoff in north carolina. officers showing up to serve a warrant when the suspect, a convicted felon, fired off a barrage of bullets. eight law enforcement officers were shot. four of them died. among them, a member of the charlotte police force, two correction officers, and a u.s. marshal who has not been identified. cbs's jarred hill joins us from

new york to talk more about this horrific scene and how it unfolded. jarred, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. after this three-hour standoff, the suburbs torn apart. the main suspect dead. two others taken in for questioning. and the families of those four members of law enforcement now changed forever. >> reporter: gunfire erupted in a neighborhood in charlotte, north carolina, around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. >> shots fired, possibly one down. correction. two down. suspect has barricaded himself. >> reporter: authorities say the shoot-out started as members of a u.s. marshals fugitive task force were serving a warnltd on a convicted felon. they say they were in possession of an illegal firearm. according to police, as they approached the suspect opened fire. >> we heard something over a loudspeaker and then you just heard gunfire left and right.

>> reporter: police say eight officers were shot. four have died. one deputy u.s. marshal, two officers with the adult department of correction, and one charlotte police department officer. >> the most i can ask of our community is that we honor and respect them. >> reporter: authorities say officers continued to face gunfire even after they shot and killed the suspect in the front yard. a woman and an 18-year-old were found later inside the house. they were taken to the police department for questioning. >> the bravery, the heroism, everything that goes down to define what our profession is, our people demonstrated that. >> reporter: a procession of law enforcement vehicles drove through charlotte last night for the fallen. the fbi is assisting in the investigation. in a statement president biden said the fallen were heroes who made the, quote, ultimate sacrifice. well, breaking overnight, the pro-palestinian protesters at columbia university stormed

an academic vi building. video posted to social media shows a group breaking into hamilton hall and then bar barricading themselves inside. this came hours after the school started to give suspensions to those who defied leaving the encampment. tom hanson was there earlier in the day and has more as they wrap up for the semester and commencement ceremonies approach. >> we're staying out here, thank you. >> reporter: nypd officers were standing by as school students ignored the request to leave or face suspension. this is the epicenter of the college protest. they started small in this tent encampment, and now they've expanded to the entire columbia university quad. >> what are you protesting?

>> i'm protesting an ongoing genocide funded by america that profits off of it. we're protesting for divestments. >> reporter: student anger has sparked nationwide. more students at the university of texas, austin, were arrest, ignoring a police command to disperse, and over a dozen students were taken into custody at the university of georgia. elise preston is in california where dozens clashed sunday after a security barrier was breached. >> reporter: inside this pro-palestinian encampment at ucla, hundreds of students and faculty members voiced their solidarity. they say they'll be here as long as it takes, and ucla says there's no timeline for the university to get rid of this encampment. >> do you feel safe with this encampment and with the counterprotesters? >> we don't feel safe with the counter pro testers, but we

think we're building a community that cares about safety. >> reporter: back here at columbia university, the students say they have no plans of removing the tents until their demands are met or they're physically removed. school officials say they need the tents cleared out so they can start preparing for graduation ceremonies on may 15th. they will also have enhanced security presence on campus. tom hanson, cbs news, new york. now to the middle east where the u.s. is stepping up pressure for cease-fire and hostage release deal along with egypt in the hopes of averting a rafah invasion. today secretary of state antony blinken heads to jordan and then israel as he urges hamas to accept the latest proposal. president biden spoke with him about the deal, urging him to exert his power to bring the hostages home. cbs's debora patta reports from jerusalem. >> reporter: under pressure and running out of options,

president benjamin netanyahu faces mounting anger. protests have ramped up demanding he make a deal to bring those in captivity home, whatever the price. but hardliners in netanyahu's ruling coalition say his job is on the line if he delays a rafah invasion and negotiates with hamas. his choices are hard. some hostages recently appeared in hamas propaganda videos. >> we are losing people that are alive now, and there is no time to waste. >> reporter: there's been a flurry of diplomatic activity within the region with hamas also feeling the heat. >> the only thing standing between the people of gaza and a cease-fire is hamas. >> reporter: once again the secretary of state made it very clear, without a plan to protect civilians, the u.s. does not support a rafah offensive,

saying the terrible suffering in gaza must end. but with three strikes in rafah alone, that feels very far away. days and nights filled with the moans of injured children, the tears for tiny bodies wrapped in shl rounds, and the silent pain of those who have cried far too much. everyone here is sick of war and longs for it to end. there has been an uptick in aid getting into gaza, but the world food program says people need a lot more. it's not just food, but also urgent supplies to treat acutely malnourished children. debora patta, cbs news, jerusalem. back here at home, dangerous storms could again strike the central u.s. this week. it comes as people across several states start cleaning up from the more than 100 tornadoes that ravaged the heartland last

donald trump's so-called hush money trial resumes today in new york with testimony from banker gary farro. he helped former trump attorney michael cohen open accounts including one cohen used to pay a porn star to cover up an alleged sexual encounter. trump is accused of falsifying records to hide the payment. and an emergency slide that fell off an airplane landed in a very curious place, and an update on a colorado mystery. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. an autopsy reports the death of a colorado woman was a homicide. she went missing on mother's day nearly four years ago. her remains were found in a shallow grave in a remotes area in central colorado last september. the autopsy revealed she had a cocktail of drugs in her body that are used to tranquilize wildlife. her husband was charged with murder in 2021, but the charges were later dropped.

the new york post says in a freak situation, a slide was washed up in front of a house in front of a lawyer whose firm is suing boeing. the slide came off a boeing 767 departing jfk's airport last friday. it was discovered on sunday washed up in front of the lawyer's beachside house about six miles from the house. the attorney's firm filed a lawsuit following alaska airline's door blowout last january. and the state health care plans must pay for gender-affirming surgery. the virginia-based court ruled west virginia's and north carolina's refusal to pay for surge very for people with government-sponsored insurance is discriminatory. the state says their policies are based on cost factors, not bias. west virginia's attorney general says he'll appeal the ruling to the u.s. supreme court. still to come, winner revealed. meet the man who won the billion dollar powerball jackpot. his incredible story next. billn
