police move in to remove pro-palestinian protesters. and signs of life. hamas releases a new video of american israeli hostage hersh goldberg-palin. the message from his parents. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today the u.s. supreme court will hear arguments over whether former president donald trump can be criminally prosecuted or not. the outcome could have major implications on the special counsel's 2020 election interference case against trump, as well as for this year's presidential race. cbs news' skyler henry is joining us from the supreme court to talk more about this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. these justices could potentially provide a potential historic ruling about the scope of presidential power as they look to answer an untested legal question -- whether a former president is immune from federal criminal prosecution for official acts.

another historic day at the u.s. supreme court where justices will soon hear arguments to decide if former president donald trump has absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for official actions he took while in office. >> if a president doesn't have full immunity, you really don't have a president. >> reporter: two lower courts have already rejected trump's claims of immunity. the high court's decision would determine whether or not special counsel jack smith can move forward with his case charging trump with scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election results which trump denies. >> never recognized this sort of immunity from criminal prosecution that trump is requesting. so i think it's a pretty uphill battle for the trump side. >> reporter: if the court rules against the former president's immunity claims, his election interference trial could possibly start before the election this november. though the court could also decide to send the case back to the lower courts. legal experts say that would

also add even more delays to the proceedings. >> the supreme court understands that time is of the essence here and that all sides and the public all want a prompt decision, whatever that may be. >> reporter: the supreme court's decision is expected to come by early july. the justices have multiple paths to decide this case. and how quickly the court moves today following the arguments ultimately depends on whether the justices agree on a decision. anne-marie? >> all right. thank you so much. while that is happening in washington, donald trump will be in a new york city courtroom where former "national enquirer" publisher david pecker is expected to return to the witness stand in the former president's hush-money trial. on tuesday pecker testified that during the 2016 presidential campaign he promised to help suppress stories that could be damaging to trump. the former president is accused of falsifying business records to hide a hush-money payment to cover up an alleged sexual encounter during the campaign.

the judge is also considering a prosecution request to hold trump in contempt of court for violating a gag order for a series of social media posts. an arizona grand jury has indicted 18 people for their alleged efforts to use so-called fake electors to try and overturn trump's loss to joe biden in the 2020 presidential election. the indictments include trump's chief of staff, mark meadows, and attorneys rudy giuliani and john eastman. trump is described as an unindicted co-conspirator. the indictment names several republicans who submitted a document to congress falsely declaring that trump won arizona. and the pro-palestinian demonstrations are spreading to college campuses nationwide with some schools cracking down. from southern california to texas, clashes broke out between police and students. more than 100 have been arrested, and students in other campuses set up encampments while protests at columbia university have until the end of

today to break theirs down. cbs' jarred hill is here with the latest. a lot to cover. good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. yeah, a lot to cover with this one. the students at columbia university, according to the school, have made some promises regarding making those encampments more open and welcoming to other people, but they say they're not leaving until their demands on met as the momentum of this movement continues to spread. protests continued into the night at the university of southern california. a calm end to a tense day. pro-palestinian protesters clashed with campus police trying to remove their encampment. [ chants ] rhonda swise who says she's palestinian-american, one of hundreds calling on the school to cut ties with israel over the war in gaza. >> they're funding this genocide that's happening in palestine and to our people. and we're not standing for that. we're not going to be silenced any longer. >> reporter: at the university of texas austin, confrontations with police in riot gear.

more than 20 arrested. [ chants ] on the east coast, students set up tents on harvard yard in solidarity with protests at columbia university. >> we're advocating for an end to massacre. >> reporter: during a visit, house speaker mike johnson was met with a chorus of boos. [ booing ] the top republican called on columbia's president to resign if she can't bring order to what he described as chaos. >> traditions of this university are being overtaken right now by radical and extreme ideologies. they place a target on the backs of jewish students. >> never in my life i felt more afraid for my life like here. >> reporter: more than a week into the camp-out at columbia, the university says it's making progress in negotiations with demonstrators. so speaker johnson said that he thinks the national guard potentially should be called in if these negotiations are not fruitful. new york's governor said that is something she is not considering at least not right now.

[ speaking in a global language ] >> this video is the first sign of life of the 23-year-old. and you can see that his left arm is severed below the elbow. goldberg-polin was seen on video during the attack badly injured with part of his arm blown off by a grenade being loaded onto a truck at the nova music festival. it's unclear when the video was recorded, but he appeared to reference the jewish holiday of passover which began on monday. his parents say that they are relieved to see him alive but are concerned about his health as well as that of the other hostages, and they are calling on all of the leaders working to broker a hostage deal to get it done. and they had this message for their son -- >> hersh, if you can hear this,

we heard your voice today for the first time in 201 days. and if you can hear us, i am telling you, we are telling you, we love you, stay strong, survive. >> the video ignited new protests in jerusalem where demonstrators lit bonfires and demanded the immediate release of all the hostages still being held in gaza. president biden met at the white house with a 4-year-old american girl who was held hostage in gaza for several weeks. abigail edan was kidnapped by hamas after her parents were killed in the october 7th attack in israel. she was the first american hostage freed in exchange for palestinian prisoners. israel says hamas is still holding around 100 hostages. president biden signed a long-sought-after $95 billion foreign aid bill into law. the bipartisan measure first proposed more than six months ago provides aid to ukraine, israel, taiwan, and humanitarian assistance for the people in

gaza. biden said the u.s. would rush badly needed weapons and military equipment to ukraine immediately. white house officials also confirmed that ukraine has recently used long-range ballistic missiles secretly provided by the u.s. against russian forces. the new aid package provides more of those missiles. the aid measure also includes a provision that would force tiktok's chinese-based parent company to sell the app or face a ban in the u.s. tiktok is vowing to wage a legal war to fight that proposed ban. several storm chances threaten millions in the central u.s. beginning late today. the first storm system moves into parts of kansas, oklahoma, and texas, bringing possible tornadoes and large hail. with storms arriving in the oklahoma city area just after midnight. then friday this storm system puts nearly 20 million people at risk of severe weather from des moines to dallas. the nastiest storms are most likely around omaha and kansas city.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports a sharply divided u.s. supreme court listened to arguments about whether federal law can require hospitals to provide emergency abortions in states with strict abortion bans. yesterday the biden administration argued that a 40-year-old federal law can require hospitals to end pregnancies when a patient's life or health is in danger, even if it overrides idaho's near-total ban on abortions. people on both sides of the abortion rights issue protested outside of the supreme court. "the arizona daily star" says the state house voted to repeal an 1864 law that bans abortions except to save the life of a mother. three republicans joined democrats to repeal the long-dormant measure. it was reinstated by the state supreme court earlier this month. the repeal now goes to the arizona senate where it is expected to pass. democratic governor katie hobbs said she will sign it into law. "the baltimore sun" says a

lufthansa boeing 747 in los angeles. a live stream caught the plane's touch-and-go attempt to land at l.a.x. tuesday. the plane landed safely a few minutes later. but the commentator called it the roughest landing ever caught on camera. airlines being forced to pay up, and schools are cutting the sugar. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks didn't move much wednesday as investors await more quarterly tech reports. the dow lost 42 points. the nasdaq gained 16, and the s&p 500 was up by one point. good news for air travelers. the biden administration is requiring airlines to give automatic cash refunds for canceled flights. domestic passengers delayed three hours or more and international travelers delayed six hours or more will also be eligible. the department of transportation will also require airlines to be more transparent about extra fees. a move toward healthier school lunches.
