from cbs news bay area, this is the afternoon edition. right now on the afternoon edition, tensions escalating as pro-palestinian protesters rock major college campuses all across the country. good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto. from coast to coast, demonstrations against the war in gaza have spread to several universities, leading to everett -- leading to concerns over safety. this was the scene at uc berkeley this morning. protesters set up tents all in the center of campus. hundreds of protesters held a rally

yesterday, calling for an immediate cease-fire in the war. they are demanding the college divest from companies that have ties to the israeli military. in a statement, uc berkeley says with three weeks left in the semester, berkeley is prioritizing students' academic interests. we will take the necessary steps to ensure the protests do not disrupt the university's operations. demonstrations erupted in northern california where police clashed with pro-palestinian protesters at cal poly humboldt x similar actions have become a flash point at nyu and columbia university. meg oliver has more on the protest and the concerns about the safety of jewish students on campus. >> a chaotic scene at cal poly humboldt in northern california as folks in right here clash with pro-palestinian protesters. at new york university last night, the nypd broke up a pro-palestinian

encampment. >> the demonstrations have spread to campuses across the country with pro-palestinian supporters angry over israel's war in gaza and many jewish students expressing fear after incidents of anti-semitism. >> columbia university, some demonstrators chanted anti-semitic slogans. in one video, a protester can be seen holding a sign near jewish students that reads the next target. it is hamas's military arm. >> jewish students are petrified to go onto campus. >> many of the pro-palestinian demonstrators camped out at columbia and insist they reject anti-semitism and demand the school divest fromcompanies funding is real. >> many of the people you see here today are jewish. >> be issues that we are

trying to address for jewish students and other students are not about speech, they are about conduct. >> adam lehman is the president and ceo of hello international, the largest jewish student organization in the world. >> those jewish students themselves, even though they are young, their family members in some cases, themselves, experienced aspects of the holocaust. when they see this, of course, they feel it deeply and they feel it in a posttraumatic sort of way that we are working so hard to eliminate. a live look at the white house where president biden condemned the anti-semitic comments and also added that he condemns anyone who does not realize what palestinians are going through. the debate is not limited to college campuses. google has fired 20 more employees following last week's sit in protest at offices in sunnyvale and in new york city. that brings the total of workers let go to nearly 50. those protesting's were demanding

the company drop their google cloud project nimbus contract with the israeli government. some employees say many of the fired workers have not even entered the company office during the demonstrations but in a statement, google says every single one of those whose employment was terminated was personally involved in disruptive activity inside the building. people in the recall efforts against alameda county district attorney pamela price say the county should have already set a date for a recall election. the group, which calls itself save alameda for everyone, sent a letter to the board of supervisors. they claim the county was required to set an election date during the meeting last tuesday. that meeting was the day after the county registrar's office certified enough signatures to force a special election. >> there is not a timeline on life. waiting until november is not an option. we need her to go right now.

>> just yesterday, price announced her office is reviewing 35 death penalty cases for possible mixed conduct by prosecutors. she said recently discovered casenotes do show that prosecutors may have been intentionally excluding black and jewish people from serving on juries. >> this is not about left or right or any sort of politics. this is about ethics and every elected prosecutor has an ethical obligation to ensure that any person who is charged with a crime receives a fair trial. >> price says the red flag was raised by a federal judge during a review of the 1993 conviction of ernest . the judge ordered price to review a dozen cases but she says her office' investigation has grown to 35 and she says more cases could be added. the last survivor for the uss arizona during the pearl harbor attack was laid to rest today. lou conter received a military flyover and a 21 gun

salute . his funeral was held in grass valley at st. patrick's church. his casket arrived this morning and it was brought into the church by members of the military. conter died earlier this month at the age of 100 to . he was a quartermaster on the uss arizona when he was struck in the surprise attack by the imperial japanese navy. 1200 crew members were killed. conter is able to save a number of others but he was one of only 334 survivors. >> he has told me before, december 7, 1941 was just one day in a four year war but i am more proud of what he did after. >> conter would go on to fly 200 combat missions including in the korean war. even survived being shot down twice. he reached the rank of lieutenant commander and even created survival training skills still used for navy pilots today. tributes continue to pour in for a bay area legend, reverend cecil williams. the

longtime social activist yesterday at the age of 94. williams was known for his compassion and support to his community and san francisco's tenderloin. he was instrumental in turning glide memorial church into a name heard all around the world. we went to glide memorial to talk to his friends and admirers about the legacy he leaves behind. >> two rose back will always be where reverend cecil williams sat every sunday for church , as recently as easter sunday. he would rejoice with his congregation. >> i walked into the church for the first time on an easter sunday. i think that i came to the right place at the right time to get what i did not even realize i needed at that time. >> dennis smiles when he thinks of williams, even hours after

his passing. >> that is the thing when i think of him. think of light, i think of love. i think of support, generosity. i can just go on and on. >> it is a sign of the unconditional love the reverend offered, a signature of his that defined the impact of glide memorial church in san francisco as a house to be welcomed. >> you could come in drunk or high . you could come in at the height of your white privilege. you could come in as a single mother. you could eat a meal and come upstairs. it mattered not. >> reverend marvin wright has been learning in the shadow of reverend williams, poised to lead the community from the legacy that helped guide him and others for years to come. >> i went to him and i said, they want me to fill your shoes. he absorbed me from that responsibility. he said, i need for you to be you and to

>> trump said he plans on testifying in court but that was before the judge ruled he could be questioned about recent civil trials that he has lost. the trial is expected to last at least five more weeks. mayor london breed wants to force some tenderloin businesses to close overnight. it is the effort to crack down on late-night crime and drug dealing in the neighborhood. under the proposal, smoke shops, liquor stores and some corner markets would have to close to midnight to 5:00 a.m. and it would not apply to restaurants, bars, or even holes. the first violation would earn a warning . after that, stores would face a fine up to $1000 per hour. the burger pit has been a local favorite burger chain in the south bay since the 1950s but after 71 years, the burger pit will close at its last location in san jose today . the founder says this was not how he wanted things to turn

out but rent hikes and financial losses from the pandemic were too much for the chain to handle. the chain have locations throughout the south bay including sunnyvale, santa cruz and milpitas. turning to our weather right now. let's give you a live look outside. a little bit chillier, a little but colder. little bit hazy outside. meteorologist darren peck has a look at the forecast. >> the marine layer built back in this morning. just building back in tomorrow. what is driving it sits out here. this area of low pressure is sitting right off of our coast. let's visualize it using forecast imagery. look at the bullseye. see it? counterclockwise rotation. that matters for tomorrow. it deepens the marine layer and it also elevates it a little more and it gives a little more lift so that we are now getting some rain that is developing within it. that means we are going to get some marine layer misting across the coast wednesday morning and into wednesday afternoon. i hesitate to call

this rain because it does not add up to a big total but it does accumulate over time in a light, study way. if you are in the east bay tomorrow, you will encounter that her wednesday. then, we never really warm-up a whole lot wednesday or thursday. friday is different. friday, there is a totally separate system coming our way from across the pacific. a more traditional way we would get rain if we are getting rain out of this. it is a weak little storm. it is really remnants of what so many of the winter storms were over the course of the last couple of months. notice how it barely holds together. if we go into the long-range forecast model, you can see there will be light rain that holds together and maybe gives us a light shower on friday. here is the perspective. much might that be? not a lot. in fact, if we

look at what the potential accumulated rainfall amounts would be, we are really only talking about a couple hundredths of an inch of rain a. it really would not be much at all. we can see what the current system is doing, keeping it a little breezy with the onshore wind from that but as we get to that system thursday and friday, you will see it is a little different. northerly winds come down. it will be a slightly stronger onshore wind on friday but it does not look terribly intense. that system does not have a whole lot to it. let's put it in the 7-day forecast. we know that friday has a drop of rain on it. we just saw why. when we are done with that, we get into the weekend. we get more blue sky than anything else and temperatures that will warm back up into the mid-70s. coming up, we celebrate national volunteers week locally here in the bay area. one san francisco resident is helping support families in her community and why she believes you can to.

>ryan>april is national volunteer month. we're celebrating some of the helping april is national volunteer month and we are salivating some of the helping hands right here in our community working to make a dip rinse. shawn chitnis -- difference. shawn chitnis has that story. >> carol has been a volunteer for the american red cross for more than 20 years. >> what speaks to me the most is the fact that we are literally going out there and saving lives. >> her time working in the northern california coastal region lets her work in san francisco but has also center across the country to serve those in need.

>> i feel like i fell in love with the people. i fell in love with the fact that i could help anytime i wanted. >> she started volunteering in 2002 after 9/11 inspired her to get more involved and two more for her country. one of the first tests she took on was helping families connect with each other over the phone using her skills as a spanish speaker. three years later, she would be part of the team from our area to respond to hurricane katrina. >> it was a life-changing experience. at first, i was a bit scared but then later, as i got to meet my fellow volunteers, it became extremely rewarding. >> more than two decades later, she keeps up her volunteer work with the red cross because of the flexibility and the impact she can have in the community. there is a need almost daily to support the victims of house fires in the bay area including assisting families who need shelter, financial assistance and childcare. she has also participated in events that educate and install fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. >> volunteering is one of the best things people can do in their lives and sometimes we think we don't have the time for it but i have a full-time

job. i have a part-time job with the nonprofit. yet, i have the time to volunteer for the red cross and have my personal life. >> during a month-long campaign to encourage others to give their time, there is likely a role for you that works with your schedule. >> please, give it a try. volunteer. come talk - temperatures cooling down as we head into the weekend and stronger onshore... ah, i stepped off the coast again. - the winds are really picking up. - fog spreading farther inland. - and in the north bay, you're gonna get soaked.
