campus chaos. pro-palestinian protests spread to colleges and cities nationwide as jewish students are urged to stay home amid the passover holiday. and clark's new deal. reports out this morning that basketball star kaicaitlin clars set to sign a major million-dollar deal with nike. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with the first witness continuing on the stand today in former president donald trump's historic criminal trial. the presumptive republican nominee is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records lirpging to a so-called hush money payment. in opening statements yesterday prosecutors accused trump of taking part in a criminal conspiracy, but defense attorneys claim he did nothing wronging and jarred hill is here with the very latest for us. good morning, jarred.

>> good morning, anne-marie. today we're going to be hearing again from the key witness who played a significant role in that so-called scheme to catch and kill stories that didn't look good for then candidate donald trump. trump says he did nothing wrong. >> this is a witch hunt and a shame. >> reporter: after railing against proceedings following opening statements, today former president donald trump is due back in a new york courtroom. the prosecution's first witness, former "national enquirer's" publisher david pecker back on the stand. during opening statements prosecutors argue in 2015 pecker mets with trump and his former lawyer michael cohen to work out a scheme to buy and conceal a negative story about trump before p an election, one of them about an alleged previous affair with adult film star stormy daniels. pecker acknowledged the "national enquirer" did pay for

stories. trump denied any wrongdoing. while cohen did pay stormy daniels $130,000 days before the election, which trump later reimbursed as legal fees, the prosecution characterized it as election fraud. >> it's a case as to bookkeeping, which is a very minor thing in terms of the law. >> reporter: in his opening, trump's attorney todd blanch said trump didn't commit any wrongs. coh cohen, whoa previously served prison time after pleading to federal campaign finance charges as well as other charges, is also expected to testify. the jury is due pack in court at 11:00 a.m. for witness testimony, but first there will be a hearing as to whether trump should be held in contempt over violating a gag order over the last couple of weeks. >> well, we'll see how that goes. >> thank you.

well, overnight, police shut down protests outside new york university's business school and at least a dozen people were arrested. some demonstrators refused to leave. ten said they were taken down by authorities. nyu is one of many college campuses stepping up security as escalating protests continue as passover begins. cbs's meg oliver reports. >> reporter: tensions and concerns about safety continue to roil at new york university. some you is students and faculty say the environment has only escalated. >> jewish students are petrified to go onto campus. >> reporter: for the past six days they have occupied the school's quad, demanding the school divest from companies funding israel. >> anti-semitism is a huge problem in the united states, but anti-zionism and anti-semitism are two very different things. >> reporter: president biden denounced anti-semitism.

>> i condemn anti-semitism protests and i also condemn those who don't understand what's going on with the palestinians. >> reporter: the protests have spread to other universities including university of michigan and mit in boston. about 60 have been arrested at yale. orthodox jews' student reporter said theyer is rounded her. >> they started taunting me and giving me their middle finger and yelling in my face until one of them waved his palestinian flag in my face and jabbed me with it in my left eye. >> well, that was meg oliver reporting. moving overseas now, israeli officials are criticizing an expected move by the biden administration to sanction one of its army battalions. here's cbs's databaebora patta.

>> reporter: the u.s. is investigating a battalion made of ultra-orthodox soldiers. the probe began after 78-year-old american palestinian omar assad was found dead after being detained at a checkpoint by israeli soldiers. mahmdou abu eboud also was arrested shortly after assad. he said he found him face down in the dirt bound and blindfolded. they ran to the doctor who tried to revive assad, eventually pronouncing him dead. >> he's all down, can't walk. he didn't make any kind of risk for soldiers. >> reporter: the possibility of blacklisting an idf unit has intensified scrutiny of the israeli military. since october 7th, nearly 500

palestinians have been killed in the west bank. this idea of footage shows a counterterrorism operation in tulkarm over the weekend that killed 14 militants. after the idf pulled out, this is what they left in their wake, this massive destruction. and residents here say they've seen nothing like this before. israeli bulldozers smashed through homes and shops, tore up roads, severed pumps and power lines, cutting off electricity and water. debora patta, cbs news, jerusalem. three months before the summer's paris -- this summer's, rare, paris olympics, there are new accusations of a chinese anti-doping cover-up. 20 chinese swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication ahead of the 2020 olympics in tokyo, but the agency accepted the findings of chinese officials that the samples had been contaminated.

china won three gold medals at those games, and some are expected to participate in paris starting in late july. back here at home, a proposed new gun law in tennessee has people on both sides of the aisle speaking out. mark strassmann reports. >> reporter: tennessee high schoolers again skipped school to protest, taking aim at a proposed gun law that they say takes aim at them. it would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom. >> the future of our state is at stake. >> reporter: they have the voices, but they don't have the votes. earlier this month tennessee's state senate approved a bill allowing teachers and school staff to carry concealed handguns. to supporters, it's a deterrent. >> we're not trying to shoot a student but protect a student from an active shooter. >> reporter: the debate took a dramatic turn when state senator london lamar spoke out while cradling her 8-month-old son. >> i'm back because this bill puts my child at risk. >> reporter: 16 states in the

district of columbia have laws that prohibit teachers from carrying a gun, but these protests come from the city a still reeling after a shooting last year at the columbia school. three students and three staff members were killed. it called for united reforms. opponents say not this law. >> you feel students are at risk with this bill. >> absolutely, absolutely. we're putting a job on a teacher that they should never have. >> reporter: but tennessee's republican lawmakers are sticking to their guns. >> some counties where they may only have two deputies on a shift, this bill tries to fix that problem and protect children. >> reporter: if the bill passes the republican super majority in the house, tennessee's governor seems poised to sign it. mark strassmann, cbs news, nashville. well, coming up, a helicopter team swoops in to rescue a tree trimmer injured on the job in california. and the police standoff that

may be in your future too. dramatic video shows a helicopter crew in california rescuing a tree trimmer who was injured on the job. the incident unfolded monday east of santa rosa. the state's highway patrol said it was called in to help first responders. firefighters gave him first aid before he was lifted in a helicopter and taken to the hospital. luckily he's going to be okay. no word on what caused the injury though. an armed gunman is arrested outside a minnesota target. police apprehend a respondent accused of breaking into the home of language's mayor, and the supreme court takes on ghost guns. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. regulate the firearms that are made from kits available online and do not have serial numbers, making them hard to track. the biden administration appealed a lower court ruling invalidating its attempts to regulate the firearms. the supreme court is set to take up the case in its next tomorrow. the "los angeles times" reports a suspect has been arrested in connection with the break-in of the l.a.mayor's home. police say ephrain matthew hunter broke into karen bass's home sunday. he entered by breaking a glass door. bass was home at the time. first responders responded when the alarm went off. when they opened the door, they found the suspect standing there. >> i just want to thank the los angeles police department again. first of all, let me just say, i'm fine. my family is fine. >> so far no motive has been released. the "star tribune" says an armed man was shot during a

standoff with police outside of a target in woodbury, minnesota. officers say they were investigating stolen plates on a vehicle in a parking lot when the suspect allegedly returned to the car and fought with officers when they tried to arrest him. they say the man who was armed with a gun then barricaded himself inside the vehicle. the s.w.a.t. team was called in. when he finally came out, he pointed his gun at the officers when the officers fired. he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. coming up in "moneywatch," new details on the reported endorsement deal that will make wnba top pick caitlin clark a multi millionaire. and often o. but this is my story. "the wall street journal" reports the top scorer in ncaa basketball history and the first pick in the wnba draft is now set to sign a $28 million eight-year deal with nike.
