friend. wow. i love your jacket and you brought it up from fancy l. a. >> yeah. maybe a little more southern california. you are right. well, we're bringing down some rainfall from the other direction and today is going to be the transition back to a more unsettled pattern. the good news is the morning commute here in and around san francisco is likely to be mainly dry. i'm tracking the rainfall but we're tracking the trail well to the north of san francisco right now. we're talking humboldt county. that's where it's going stay for the next few hours. santa rosa, your rain chances begin to increase around 11:00 and 12:00. couple of things to point out. one, lack of sunshine today in the north bay and two, we're looking at that temperature profile being about 10 to 12 degrees cooler than yesterday. mid 50s. that's it for you in santa rosa today. winter storm warning in the sierra will go into effect at 11:00 a.m. this morning. widespread snowfall totals of 6
5:03 am
to 12 inches but the higher peaks maybe 1 to 2 feet of snowfall in the sierrament let's talk about temperatures today. even in rain this afternoon or this evening and some of you in the south and east bay you have to wait that long. look at the highs not that warm. oakland 62 and san francisco 60 and much cooler than yesterday at antioch at 70 and now 60. san jose a high today of 67. you may not have any rain until 6:00, 7:00 this evening but rain is moving in from the north as we speak. let's see how the roads are doing as the roads are still dry. here's gianna. good afternoon. the fact they're dry will certainly help for the morning commute but we know that changes things. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge and they have yet to do the lane changes adding that one extra lane for commuters heading southbound into san francisco. but quiet here, quiet at the bay bridge. easy commute into san francisco so
5:04 am
far from either bridges, no delays there. westbound 80 also looking pretty good. and in fact, we're off to a fairly calm and quiet start. we'll check on the altamont pass commute coming up in the next report. reed? all right, we're thinking about this. baltimore this morning. we're closely following the wreckage of the francis scott key bridge. we've just learned that investigators from the national transportation safety board are looking at that crash cargo ship and they have recovered the data record device. it comes as divers do the work of recovering the bodies of six construction workers presumed dead. this video still defies understanding and watch this. it's the moment that container ship hit the bridge and then within seconds, total failure. total collapse of that bridge. and you know, tens of thousands of people have seen this video and they know that used to be the way nay got to work. they got to school. and so many are echoing what maryland's governor said yesterday. losing bridge is a shock. >> whole bridge just fell down. start -- whoever to everybody.
5:05 am
the whole bridge just collapsed. >> people like that want to understand how this happened. so here's what we know this morning. that container ship lost power and was adrift in the patapsco river and sounding mayday alarms just before it happened. police heard that and they quickly stopped traffic from going onto the bridge, but it was little help for those who were already on the bridge. as it collapsed just seconds after that cargo collision. two survivors pulled successfully from the water and six others this morning presumed dead and missing. their families watching at the water's edge. >> i can't imagine how painful today has been for these families. >> yesterday, at this time, we used the word "rescue" and overnight that word turned to recovery. tragically it's a mess there in baltimore for drivers this morning as the entire busy port remains closed and you know in the bay area we feel this story because we are a bridge dependent community. the key bridge serves about the
5:06 am
same number of cars each day as the richmond-san rafael bridge and we often see container and cruise ship traffic all the time near the golden gate bridge and bay bridges and chances are somebody who watches our traffic in the area every one of us crossing bridges the last 24 hours felt a little bit of anxiety. and even vulnerability. could this happen here. >> absolutely. if you remember, reed, the old bay bridge actually took a big -- couple of big hits in fact in the span of six years. in 2007, the cosco busan slammed into a bridge support tour ripping gash in the side of the ship that spilled 52,000 gallons of oil into the bay. in 2013 minor damage when it struck a bridge tower because of heavy fog in the area. both times of course the bridge stood its ground and caltrans sells our wilson walker that's by design. >> reporter: that is the most seismically advanced bridge
5:07 am
ever designed. >> the eastern span of the bay bridge. >> reporter: caltrans bart talking about the first line of defense on the new bay bridge and that's the fender system that you see here and while this one is unique to the tower foundation of the eastern span, there's something like this on every bridge in the bay area. >> so some of those systems have completely different foundations. so they never actually touched the bridge. other bridges have the fenders designed into their foundations so they're designed to actually crumple and absorb the energy. >> reporter: i imagine as people travel around the bay area, they're going to see some different engineering. but it's all doing the same thing. >> that's 100% correct because it's almost bridge zoo in the bay area. gets so and different types of bridges. depending on where you are at the fender system has been designed for that particular bridge. >> yesterday's operations we're hampered by a reduced visibility. >> the problem we really had with the illusions that we've
5:08 am
seen has been when oil tankers hit them. the ships take the damage, not the bridge. >> reporter: you pick it up and it's just that -- consistency of that -- of that goo. >> reporter: in this respect the cosco busan spill is evidence the fender system san work but what about the circumstances as we understand them in baltimore? with the large ship landing a direct hit at pretty good speed. >> again, so that impact is being reported at being about 8 knots. and which is significant for a ship of that size. but has we seen something like that here in one of our bay bridges, the fender systems are designed to withstand that. >> reporter: it's not just the fenders. all of the bay's bridges have been retrofitted some several times over. so they all have an added factor of resilience in the event of a collision. >> so that's another advantage to california. because of the earthquakes, we've had to design our bridges so they can
5:09 am
absorb energy. so even if you get the bridge actually being touched, all of our bridges have got the ability to move a little bit. but the idea really is, is not to have a vessel hit the structure. >> well, the key bridge collapse is not expected to impact the port of oakland but could cause disruptions in the supply chain since right now the port of baltimore is blocked. one of the busiest on the east coast. president biden says the federal government will pay to rebuild the bridge. coming up at 6:30. jarred hill will join us with an update on the bridge collapse. he'll be live in maryland and continue to update you on the story on air and online at kpix.com and of course on the free cbs news app. well, good morning to our friends in oakland looking live at the city there. after more than a year without a permanent police chief finally a chance to meet the man tapped to replace leronne armstrong. a man to know his name well. floyd mitchell. the new top cop and front and center at city hall as the boss. mitchell
