yesterday and who knows what's next and you know what else? we have a special guest today. paul deanno back here in the bayjoining us for the next couple of days. >> i now work for our sister station down in los angeles and it's an honor to be back for a few days with you guys in the morning. so thank you for having me. >> glad you made it and i asked you this morning and i was doing the mouthwash thing and i said how you doing? this was probably a rude wake-up call but we're glad that the alarm went off and you are here with us. >> any tuesday wake-up call is rude. mouthwash or not. >> you have family in the bay area. >> i have some family in the south bay and my wife is from oakland. so this has always been home. and it's nice to be back in california. and southern california. at our sister station there. it's doubly nice to be back in the place that i called my work home for almost a decade. so this is awesome. so thank you for letting me be here and we have a great new weather studio that we like to show off. and

right now we are showing it off and i'm showing you some temperatures right now. which are in the 50s, 54 in fremont and no other station in the country has something like this that you get to watch here at kpix and cbs san francisco. san francisco 51 and novato currently 46 degrees and it's a mild morning out there. we have some drizzle out there as well. got to talk about what's going on in concord over the next 12 hours or so. we're looking at temperatures staying in the upper 40s through 7:00, 8:00 and you will get increasing sunshine today and you are going to start off with cloud cover but lots of sunshine come afternoon. we're also looking at san jose with temperatures in the 50s this morning. notice we're cloudy through about 9:00, 10:00 and then we'll go mostly sunny by the afternoon. but we do have some changes coming as soon as tomorrow. that storm right there which is about 24 hours away is going to hop aboard the jet stream. and ride into northern california. i know we had rain over the weekend. a

stormier more unsettled weather pattern will return by the middle to end of next week. closer to the northern california coastline today and we'll stay dry throughout the day today. but we're cloudy with showers in the north bay tomorrow morning. with rain returning for all of us including san francisco and concord and san jose by tomorrow afternoon. so a rainy pattern is about 24 hours away. now a look at traffic with gianna. good morning. good morning, paul. yeah, so i guess the roadways are dry this morning which will certainly help as you make that trek around the bay area. which is good news. but as paul just said that's going to change at least by tomorrow. so bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are off. and if you are headed into the city, right now, it's a fairly quiet commute overall. we're not dealing with a lot of delays or issues and in fact, bit of the overview here and a scale of 1 to 5. a 1 making the peninsula commute so far. 880 is clear in both directions and hearing of possible brake lights along highway 4. that's in the next report. reed. breaking news out of baltimore this morning. you see this large body of water there.

when you went to bed, the frances scott key bridge was there over that water. this morning, it's gone. collapsed. you see right there where it happened. the bridge into the water after the cargo ship hit one of its support columns sending the bridge and several cars and people into the icy water below. listen to one person on the scene this morning. >> there's cops everywhere. my job -- and there's police all up and down the bridge, yo. >> you hear her, she's breathless and we don't know how many people went into water but we do know that rescue crews are in that water, seven are reported missing as the sun comes up in baltimore. only two rescued so far. this collapse happened around 1:30 a.m. local time. again, look at this. that video showing the moment of collapse. massive stretch of the frances scott key bridge. it opened in 1977 and now it's destroyed. let's talk about

the search. it's treacherous in those waters. think about it. what remains of the bridge is unstable this morning. the water temperatures, freezing cold. visibility in the water is low. so rescuers are facing a ticking clock in some pretty dangerous conditions. so you know, here in the bay area, as a community, we are dependent on bridges and we see cargo ships nearby daily. the baltimore bridge, it serves 31,000 travelers every day. our busiest bridge the bay bridge. we see 15,000 cars on that span every day. the golden gate bridge about 42,000. the richmond-san rafael bridge is in closest comparison and it serves about 36,000 cars crossing the span every day. so watching it closely and we'll have a live from the scene in our next hour. and we'll continue to update you on this story through our website. kpix.com. and of course the free streaming cbs news app. another story we are watching closely this morning.

it's the battle over the fate of the abortion pill mifepristone. the fight and fate is now at the u.s. supreme court. the argument over the pill widely considered as the most significant reproductive rights case since the court ended the nationwide right to abortion in 2022. let's drill down. the justices will weigh this argument. whether the federal agency which is the food and drug administration overstepped its authority when it made it more accessible to women. some legal experts believe if the supreme court limits the use of the drug, it could also hinder the agency's authority to regulate other prescription drugs. did you hear about this one? major story. rocking the entertainment world. multimillion homes of music producer sean "diddy" combs raided by the department of homeland security. there they are going in. u.s. officials will only say the raids in l. a. and in miami on star island in miami, are part of a possible sex trafficking investigation. we're told at least two people were arrested

at combs' california home. this is all happening in an environment when this -- man, this artist is facing accusations of sexual abuse in four cases. so far, sean combs denies all wrongdoing. let's come home to san francisco's inner richmond district a man charged in connection to a string of vandalism attacks. 22-year-old ocel torres accused of slashing the tires of at least 20 cars in one night. before that he faces nearly two dozen counts of vandalism and so far he says to a judge, he's not guilty. gianna? well, reed, seton medical center workers are on strike for a second day today. demanding higher wages and more staffing but this strike actually calls for manager a little bit different. and surprising actually. 400 health care workers at seton say their health care is so bad, it's actually putting them at risk. there's also concern about the future of the hospital which been hit by job cuts and other service cuts for all employees

including nurses. >> i have been trying to get an mri myself and i have been unable to get authorization for that. because they don't want to take their own workers here as patients. >> our kelsi thorud talked with one of the workers who says it's limiting coverage for her family with seton's new health plan. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: rochelle has worked at seton medical center for years. she loves the community of people at the hospital. and grew up just blocks from its campus. but now rochelle says she's in a tough spot. she says the hospital changed its health insurance provider significantly limiting where rochelle's family including her 6-month-old daughter, can get care. >> her pediatric -- was no longer covered. and my ob is not covered. we're now out of network with all of our doctors.

>> reporter: sew hill lives in sunnyvale and she says her new insurance only works at seton and john muir health both of which are close to or even more than an hour away. she says she worries night and day about what would happen and how much it would cost if her daughter had a medical emergency. >> i grew up with chronic asthma. and i grew up -- i actually have a food allergy. and right now, at this point, what stresses me out the most is we're starting her on baby food. so she's learning how to eat baby food. i'm afraid that what if she has an allergic reaction to some kind of food? or what if she ends up having asthma like me? >> reporter: rochelle tells me she feels betrayed. >> i work full-time for a hospital and it's not fair that i have to worry on whether or not i can afford to get my daughter proper health care when i give up how many hours

of my day instead of being home with her, i have to be at work. >> reporter: that's why rochelle joined hundreds of her co-workers on a two day strike outside the hospital. demanding better benefits. she told me she's doing all of this, picketing, speaking out, for one reason. and one reason only. to make sure her daughter has the medical care she needs and deserves. >> i'm only fighting for my daughter. that -- is the only -- one of the main reasons why i'm in this strike. >> well, seton says it's already offered a 16% pay hike over three years along with free medical benefits and up to 400 hours annually of accrued pto. it added in a statement we are disappointed with the union's decision to walk off the job at the expense of patient care. its priority is to provide uninterrupted care to patients.

we continue monitoring breaking news at 5:14 in the morning out of baltimore after the frances scott key bridge collapsed into the water overnight sending several cars into those icy waters below. you see that cargo ship right there. it ran into one of the bridge's support columns so right now here's where we are. rescuers are in the water and they're looking for at least seven missing. two rescues to report at this hour. so that's in the win column. we've just learned that president joe biden has been briefed on the collapse and is monitoring the situation closely from the white house. you know, bay area knows what it is to be a bridge dependent community. so we also are watching this one and working with our cbs network of reporters all over the country closely. gianna. >> devastating to see the bridge just in the water there like that. well, it's travel tuesday. and in hawaii, the island of maui is trying to move forward after last summer's devastating wildfire. it's been seven months since destructive flames swept across the island. while it will take several more years to rebuild, most of the island is open to

visitors. big hotels and resorts are offering special deals to entice guests. and small local businesses say what they need now is more tourists. but they're asking visitors not to ask about their personal experiences. many of them are fire victims and they are still recovering. >> you can see the path it went just right around us. you know. just -- a miracle that it is still here. >> to be able to reopen is a sign of hope for other restaurants other businesses. >> maui is going to take a long time to heal. this fire has affected everybody. >> my biggest message and invitation to everyone is just to come with respect and a desire to understand. >> we're here to put on our brave face and smile. and have fun and get back to normal. >> well, the tourism authority has a list of tips to be a compassionate traveler including not going near the burn zone or taking pictures of it or anything else that might be sensitive to that community. well, taking a live look outside here in the bay area

this morning. this is our view and you can see sutro is blinking saying i'm still here on a tuesday. maybe getting a little upstaged and paul deanno, welcome here back to the bay area. we know you are much loved here and you have family here. and we appreciate you filling in while jess is off serving our country this week. take it away my friend. >> it's awesome to be back and it's awesome to be talking about bay area weather. what a couple of years we have had in california. now forecasting in southern california where we've had some crazy weather as well. please enjoy the calm while we have it. because things are going to get more active as we head toward the holiday weekend. and i know a lot of you with outdoor activities for easter. the easter egg hunt in the neighborhood. the weather is kind of iffy for the weekend. san francisco 61 degrees today and you saw the clouds out this morning and you will get some sunshine this afternoon. novato 67 and santa rosa in the low 60s and oakland your high today 64. concord 67 and antioch 68 and 58 along the coast in beautiful half-moon

bay. livermore 66 degrees. san jose, 67. and los gatos 66 degrees. it should be very pleasant outside this afternoon. can't say the same for later onthis week. we'll get to that in a minute. first your first alert doppler radar. there are some pockets of drizzle especially in the mountains where the moisture and the low cloud cover you saw near the tower banks up against the mountains and rises up a little bit a couple thousand feet. you can get some drizzle out there and a few pockets of drizzle out there right now. winter storm warning in the sierra and you can see widespread 6 to 12-inch snowfall totals with isolated totals of 1 to 2 feet in some of our higher peaks so all that red you see along interstate 80, up toward tahoe, you are under a winter storm warning for tomorrow and thursday. that is storm number one. which is the weaker of the two. so storm number two is going to be the stronger one that's the one that will impact part of your holiday weekend. fog and drizzle this morning will have sunshine this afternoon. here's a wide view of our satellite and radar imagery. we have the storm which is building off the oregon coastline. it's going to hop

aboard the jet stream and ride on down into northern california tomorrow. not a big storm. not a huge rainmaker. but it will impact especially the evening commute tomorrow. you can clearly see where the rain is. it's sitting offshore this evening but it's not over us yet and we'll go cloudier overnight tonight and we'll be cloudy tomorrow morning and north bay. mendocino county. perhaps some showers as early as tomorrow morning. by tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening, some of the darker shades of green begin to move in especially into the north bay. sonoma county. we'll see % heavy mountain snowfall in the sierra through thursday morning. little bit of a break on thursday and showery not too much rain. that's mother nature reloading for that second storm. which is going to come in. rainfall totals, about 0.75 of rain for sonoma and half an inch of rain for con cord and in the south bay this first storm will give you about one-half an inch of rain for redwood city. so as we look at what's going on here for extended forecast we're going to be talking about temperatures that are going to be in the 60s across the board

but several chances of rain. weevil dry today. rain moves in on wednesday. we get a break on thursday. it's that second storm, guys, that's going to give us widespread rain on friday and saturday. and the chance that it lingers through easter sunday. two different storms coming at us with several chances of rainfall. that's your forecast. time now for a look at the roads with gianna. good morning. >> good morning. a little hard to do that hunt if it rains on sunday. we'll see. for now it is dry though. with no major delays on the freeways. it's a great commute so far this morning on a tuesday. if you are getting ready to grab the koch fee and get out the door and head to bay bridge here's a live look and you can see traffic is moving along well right now. no metering lights just yet and it's pretty smooth all the way into san francisco this morning. i want to start off with the overview map as well. just to kind of give you an idea of where we're sitting at overall and the areas that tend to bottleneck, all clear, no delays right now on 101 coming out of the south bay also looks pretty good taking northbound 101 through san jose. not a bad

commute along highway 4. we had reports of a crash it looks like it's really not affecting traffic though. and everything is pretty smooth westbound especially the commute direction if you are headed maybe towards that westbound 80 connector through hercules. we are tracking brake lights though in the altamont pass. it is a little bit busy through there through westbound 580. reed? thank you. where will your a's play? we chat with diehards before opening day and oh my emergen-c crystals pop and fizz when you throw them back. and who doesn't love a good throwback? you know what? he said why not do this again? let's get crowd excited one more time. so he hits one into the left field bleachers for his second homer of the day. not a bad day at the office. that already doubled the amount of runs the a's had. giants win it 4-1 and mark it on the calendars. mlb opening day is this thursday and reed you know, it really doesn't mean anything as far as the standings or for you know, the giants' fans but for a's fans, it's an exhibition game but there really is a lot more on the line there. like where are they going to play after this season. >> i know, a's fans have been through a lot. we hear you and feel you but if the team's move to las vegas wasn't enough. our wilson walker shows you that some outrage is really happening a lot this morning because of a move to change the rules around tailgating at the coliseum. >> okay. >> dad, how long we been coming here? >> eight. >> yeah. >> ive been coming here before you were even born. >> yeah. it's been a while. >> reporter: for the hangman

5:30 in the morning and right now on cbs news bay area, we are looking live right now at a reporter getting ready to do what we're doing. gathering information from the cbs partners in baltimore after the collapse of the francis scott key bridge overnight. on a normal morning, the bridge would serve tens of thousands of commuters and this morning, after a cargo ship hit a support pier, the bridge collapsed, sending several plunging into the water. listen to what people say on the scene this morning. >> want to know what the bang was. ship hit the key bridge, sinking the bridge is gone. >> the bridge is gone and you are looking at that video as that news making event happened. the bridge reportedly went down in seconds. this happened while many of you were asleep and at 1:30 a.m. local time. traffic reportedly nightmare for the area while a frantic search for survivors happens in the water below and in fact dive teams in the water

right now. we understand seven people are missing. rescuers have pulled two survivors from the water so that's in the win column. but the rescues are not easy this morning. and they are downright dangerous because look at that. look at the metal there in the water. this is a precarious situation because a lot of that bridge is unstable. unstable and in the water. where rescue crews need to be. by the way the water is freezing so there's limited vick down there as well. we have a live report from the scene in just a few minutes. but our thoughts as a bay area bridge community with the people in baltimore right now. let's take a live look right now from the mark hopkins over our beautiful vistas and you can see the city is glowing there. and our thoughts are though, paul, with the people who are dealing with that situation in baltimore this morning. >> absolutely. what a tragedy. and in and around the chesapeake bay there are so many bridges and that's just the way of life there. just like it is like you had mentioned guys in the last half hour, just like san francisco. just like the bay area. and our thoughts and prayers are with

the families impacted as the bridge has literally fallen into the bay there. we're talking about our weather here. and our weather this morning. the one thing i want to point out aside from the low cloud cover you just saw from the live picture, it's chilly out there. in the north bay, 41 degrees or better put it's nine degrees above freezing right now in places like petaluma and napa. it's a brisk start where we have more cloud cover like san jose you are running at 54 degrees and half-moon bay currently at 52. let's talk about what we can expect throughout the day today. a good dose of sunshine, this is your neighborhood forecast for santa rosa and i know it's brisk this morning. you will be in the upper 40s by 9:00 and in the mid 50s by 11:00 reaching the low 60s this afternoon. we've got a baseball game i know it's practice. but it's the second game of that home and home series we do before the season starts and this is at oracle park. in san francisco. where at 4:00, one hour before that first pitch, it will be 60 degrees outside. we have some changes coming and we get sunshine this afternoon but that is the storm that's going to impact your day coming up on

wednesday. we have rain returning by wednesday evening. let's talk more about today. the last mainly dry day. we may get until monday of next week. a high of 66 in petaluma today. novato, your high 67 and morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. the city will get up to 61 and oakland 64 and concord 67. and antioch 68 degrees and 66 for you in livermore. and the tri-valley, half-moon bay, 58 and south bay, san jose, good morning to you, your high this afternoon 67 degrees. changes coming tomorrow. we have a lot of rain to talk about. we'll talk about which day looks to be the wettest in a few minutes but which roads are looking the worst? here's gianna with a look at traffic. good morning. >> thank you. you know, so far we're still in the pattern not seeing a lot of cars on the roadway just yet which is helpful especially on some of our commutes and as you make your way out of marin county into san francisco, a live look here across the golden gate bridge. and you can see traffic is moving along at the limit with no delays. now here's where things are starting to pick up. just a little bit though over at the bay bridge. metering lights have not been turned on

yet. but likely in the next few minutes or at least they do around 5:35 every morning. so that's happening in just a matter of seconds actually but right now it's pretty quiet and clear overall there and most of the freeways are holding steady with the exception of that early supercommuter ride as you head into the altamont pass, that's busy. reed? thank you so much. independent presidential candidate robert f. kennedy jr. is in oakland this morning where he will announce his running mate for the 2024 race for the presidency. so why oakland? reportedly oakland native and tech attorney nicole shanahan is the frontrunner. that's a rumor this morning. but his positioning says a lot. shanahan also bankrolled a super bowl ad this year for kennedy. by the way the list of potential vp picks also includes nfl quarterback aaron rodgers and former minnesota governor jesse ventura and former congresswoman garboard. a federal judge has thrown out elon musk's lawsuit

against a nonprofit group that tracks online hate speech. the judge said's musk lawsuit against the center was clearly punitive and not act protecting the platform's security or legal rights. the group previously published reports spee on x after musk took over. well, this morning, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu calling off a trip by two of his closest aides to washington, d.c. netanyahu says his decision came in light of the united nations passing a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in gaza. the scheduled meeting between u and israeli officials was supposed to give the two sides really a chance to discuss alternatives to israel's planned invasion of rafah in gaza. updates in former president donald trump's legal battles. first his new york civil fraud judgment. an appeals court agreed to slash his bond to $175 million and push back his deadline to pay it off. and in a separate hush money criminal case, a judge rejected trump's

request for more delays and his trial is now solidly set for april 15th. well, reed, get back to the breaking news out of maryland this morning. rescue crews in baltimore are searching for survivors of that dramatic bridge collapse that happened this morning. many parts of that 1.6-mile long francis scott key bridge are now submerged and look at that right there in the water. that was the moment it fell in. now the water and as the sun comes up, crews hope it will be a little easier to assess the situation. >> this morning, we are joined by wakesha bailey. there's the what happened angle and the traffic angle but let's start with the people angle. dangerous waters and tell us about that. >> reporter: yeah, good morning guys you know. this is a heavy hit for this city of baltimore. and as you mentioned, the weather conditions out here, it's just cold so you can only imagine just how cold that water is. now right now, we know that seven people are

calls that came that. they were just frantic just hearing of this big boom and seeing that large container ship crash into the bridge. and as you have been showing video there's not much left. this is also a major hub as far as commerce goes. now all the ships that usually come into the port of baltimore they're also going to have to be rerouted to other ports. this is going to be a huge traffic and kind of hit this economy here in baltimore pretty significantly. >> 36,000 people use that bridge every day. and so we know that the other angle to the story is the traffic snarl and mess. our best thoughts the people who are still in the water are pulled out successful simply that rescuers are safe in treacherous conditions. thank you so much. also our understanding that president joe biden has been briefed on this story and you know we take this personally in the bay area because so many of us rely on bridges every day. baltimore, same thing. as she just talked

sierra, there's a new winter storm warning which goes into effect tomorrow. temperatures today, in san francisco, will barely squeeze out the low 60s. it will be a pleasant afternoon. little breezy at times. and we'll see increasing sunshine and partly sunny this morning and mostly sunny skies this afternoon. and let us also take you to santa rosa where you are starting off very chilly in the low 40s but you will warm up to the low 60s by 1:00. 64 degrees by the afternoon. calm today and two straight dry days but now enter that unsettled pattern. this is the first of two storm that will arrive to the middle of the week. we start futurecast wide to show you the storm on approach. go cloudy overnight tonight and some showers for the north bay up to mendocino and humboldt county in the morning. but then it pushes south of the golden gate bridge in the afternoon and evening and i think the second half of tomorrow will be the wetter part of it. but still we're just talking some light to moderate rainfall and bit of a break in-between storms but not much with mother nature reloading and giving us a widespread rain chance coming up on friday. but some showers
