8:02 pm
>> next year when louisville and kentucky play, i don't know if anyone's going to show up in an open sure do not. >> do something. >> i met her last night and i told her where the heck have you been? >> if we're going at each other and practice you don't have the soreness in your chest after take on the holster with him. gone!! gone! >> i kind of want to run this. am i saying that right? incredible sandwich. i want to get that on record. >> i'm wearing the same shoes, boxers, socks, jeans, undershirt, and pull over. that's probably my wife would say that's too much information. >> i'm regretting i even brought up that piece of trivia. >> 1300 text messages, and you do it in the middle of the afternoon, then the answer and then you've got to put a thumbs-up or a hard on it, you know? and that's now it becomes 2600 text messages. >> all right, what's better than march madness friday? how about march madness saturday night? right here on kpix court. vern glenn alongside former usf guys head coach dan belluomini and coach, sweet 16
8:03 pm
has entered the discussion . so many great matchups today. >> good matchups. gonzaga gives away to arizona gets a win. but you know the ncaa tournament is all about stories, and north carolina state, 10th in their league. they lost their last four they win the acc tournament and they're in the sweet 16. congratulations to oakland though i thought they really gave nc state a good game and they had a great year but >> like the coach said, so many great story lines such as get into it. kansas? the and the midwest region, salt lake city, mark had the zags looking for their ninth trip to the sweet 16, and here we go. look at that slam! boy, they can just get upstairs on the reverse dam. here come the kansas jayhawks, and the alley. for the dog. for the bulldogs. they came out hot! with an answer.
8:04 pm
52-49 for watson. now a 12 point lead watson from long range hit a three. led the bulldogs with 21, and then up 15! under 11:00 to play, then greg left wide open and not a good idea. he hit from deep pit part of a 32-4 bulldogs run. they outscored kansas 46-24 in the second half and cruise 89 -68 gonzaga has reached the second week of the tournament for the ninth year in a row. >> couldn't be more proud. as i told him in the locker room, i mean, it's incredible for nine straight sweet 16's. >> it means a lot. especially me growing up in spokane around that area. but i've seen the culture as a young kid and just how close-knit everyone is. >> that's been my dream school my whole life, you know? i grew up watching these guys forever, you know, watching the greatness of coach fuel and all the players that have come
8:05 pm
through here. and so to be able to have guns i got on my chest is, i mean, it's an honor for me. >> the sweet 16 in thing, we don't take it for granted at all. i'll say it again, i thickets the greatest sporting event in the entire world. >> child of spokane. it doesn't get too much love but you know it's my city. >> all right out of the midwest is going to be purdue or utah state. the coach, how did guns i got attacked dickinson? >> well, they did a great job on dickinson. i thought dickinson had a really good first half. but don't forget ek, the big center for guns i got, got two fouls when he went out of the game. i thought dickinson got going, but they attacked him in the screen and roll. they may dickinson play some defense, and he doesn't have great lateral greatness. nembhard comes off screens, and here ek, who is really solid at the low block, and difficult to defend. i thought, you know, gave them a lot of trouble. so here's that screen and roll again, a nice little -- gonzaga really played well. i mean, kansas is a good team. they're not a graham team. and as i got
8:06 pm
put on a show. they got the chance to go deep in the tournament. how about watson. 21 points, 8 of 11 shooting. watson, how big was -- >> watson has had a fabulous tournament. second game in a row that he's played well. the you watch watson, and he's a guy that, you know, he's multidimensional. he can put it on the floor and make shots, and, by the way, vernon, good defender, but has a nice way about him in terms of understanding the game, playing without the ball, lobbing for the don't, and gonzaga, how many shots did they have around the room? i mean, it was unbelievable. they started the second half 8 of 9, and i thought they were in great shape even at halftime with ek with the two fouls. get back to second, and they really started to roll. >> and we got a good feeling out west. let's take a look at arizona and dayton. and arizona, boy, i mean, they don't play around. i mean, into your living room, hello! right at you! oakland may have
8:07 pm
-- johnson. and against dayton, wildcats kept flexing inside. kumar barrow, two fisted slam. second half with the jets and on the attack again did above the rim, how about a reverse jam ? 30 points for the former san leandro high star. dayton friars, though, boy, they needed to make a move, and a move they did. ada ron holmes. here he is cutting the lead to five with 10:00 to play, but that's as close as they would get, half the cats were spotted by scoring 10 straight points. jaden bradley said a good night now, as arizona onto the round of sweet 16 after beating dayton 78-68 in the west region salt lake city site. and i must bring up the san leandro cat. i mean, one of the things i love about this tournament is so many local ties to this one. johnson's, what a --
8:08 pm
>> he has, and the second game in a row, he played well the whole year, but roschon johnson is very active, and he's a guy that can depend on the perimeter. he can make shots. he can run it all the way to the basket. and he gets a great look at it. so he gives, he gets the wildcats, you know, another outside threat that can make shots, and follow, you know, had eight points in the first half. he didn't score in the second half. so johnson had to pick up the slack, because -- >> i thought arizona had a chance to really blow dayton out in the first half. they were up 17, but the flyers came right back on them, wouldn't allow it, and i thought, you know, johnson and the second half was really the difference. >> it was no big. in fact, we got coach tommy lloyd talking about him. here's what he had to say. >> keyshawn, he's a dog. he's a winner. you know, i mean, you know, that don't attempt was crazy, you know? but i also think it sets a little bit of a tone. >> keyshawn johnson wanted all of this one as he comes right at you. he didn't get that, but he ended up getting the
8:09 pm
layup anyway. >> okay, so let's turn our attention to caleb love by the way, next is either going to the clemson or baylor for them. >> yeah, and, you know, you look at caleb love, and don't forget, burn, he transferred to arizona from north carolina. and north carolina -- >> big program to big program! >> and north carolina is so good, they can sustain a loss like caleb love. but caleb love is the 2012 player of the year, and he's a big difference maker. you know, he's about six foot four. he can drive it to the rim. the defend. that was a great shot block. but he's a handler of the ball, and a really good outside shooter. he is really dangerous if he gets going from three. i mean, he, he can put arizona on his back and lead them to the final four if he continues to knock down shots like this, because of his size, he's really hard to defend. now i've seen him have great gains throughout the year, but he has a few without outside jumper not going in. and then arizona
8:10 pm
has to rely on some of the other guys. but love they be kind of player. >> okay, so let's stick with the pac-12 and talk about washington state and read up against iowa state today, and former usfs coach kyle smith. trying to lead the cougars to their first sweet 16 since 2008. first half sonoma state transfer jaelyn wells! from deep! gave the cougs in 1970 lead . final seconds of the half, was you still up two, iowa state keyshawn gilbert passed the house all warm for the leon. tied the game at 27 into halftime. second half, cyclones up. curtis jones from the. made it a seven point game. and then 59-50 under 3:00 left. oh, me lawn stocks down the three, pushed the lead to double digits, cyclones won at 67-56 to move on to the sweet 16. washington states loss was the first in this tournament by a pac-12 school. how about the
8:11 pm
run that wazzu made? >> well, they made a great run, and, you know, the fact of the matter is when you get into this level of the ncaa tournament , you got to make some shots. and washington state, you know, ice is a guy that normally is a big-time leader. wells made all kinds of outside shots for him, but really not enough. and jones inside , to my recollection, all he had eight points. you know, he needs, jones and rice got to combine for 30 or more if the cougs are going to have a chance to move on against, by the way, a tremendous iowa state team who obliterated houston in the finals of the big 12 tournament. but congratulations to kyle smith. they had an incredible year. >> bad day with bad shooting. >> yeah, you got to make shots. spin-up just 22%. all right, let's add to the commercial break as we have more saturday march madness i had for us. going into this break, what do we have on the other side? how about the golden grizzlies of oakland? on the other
8:12 pm
8:13 pm
8:14 pm
would this be the greatest number a set of waiting for oakland but not for me because of michigan's stuff, right? heard that or not. i lied. this is the greatest win that i've ever been a part of. i, as soon as that horn went off, i changed my mind immediately. >> the lovable underdogs, coach. the oakland golden grizzlies. they felt the love all throughout, and rode it into a second round game sweet 16 on the line of this one. the leva state nc state wolfpack, they were standing in the way. had to get past the 14 seed. second half, have you ever seen this guy before, dj burns is a grown man. fought through the
8:15 pm
double team for the three-point play , any letter, i didn't know about it too. >> look at that! >> but oakland didn't go down easy. jack gohlke drew the foul, hit the three for a four-point play! >> 40 minutes, not enough forget the game. this one went to overtime, and in the end, too much wolfpack. jaden taylor knocked down a dagger three, and it's a pretty and raleigh north carolina. nc state won the game 79-73, and the 11 seed wolfpack are headed to the round of sweet 16 for the first time since 2015! >> we going to the sweet 16, guys. i mean, and this was a team that, you know, most people didn't think we could even make it out of, you know, d.c. last weekend or couple weekends. i don't know how long it's been. >> what's your message to those people who didn't expect to see nc state make it to the sweet 16? >> well, i'd appreciate it. >> be nice, be nice.
8:16 pm
>> i've been saying it, you know, they didn't really believe in us, and, you know, they probably still don't, but that doesn't matter. if you're supporting us, thank you. if not, that's what it is. >> i think people now hopefully will know that we're not in california, and, you know, we're from michigan now. and, you know, for me, i always wanted to come here and hang banners and make these memories and, you know, put open on the map, and to say that, you know, we did that, it's such a special thing. >> we really appreciate everything. it's hard to get here, guys, from the mid-majors. it's hard to get here, so it's a tough one, but thank you. >> all right, so the pack will play in the colorado or marquette in the sweet 16. that he will be next friday. but coates, in overtime, 9-0 run by the wolfpack. bye-bye. >> bye-bye. and the wolfpack, maybe they're just then, maybe they're the team at the tournament that's going to, that's going to make something magnificent run. but, you know, you really got to love burns. i mean, he's made a believer out of me. i can tell you, he's like 6'8", 6'9", and what,
8:17 pm
three something? >> north of three. got to be. >> anything about him, he is, he, he plays like a little guy. he's got a lot of an s, but he can also knock you out of there. >> yeah, we saw that. >> and he's got a pitiful little left-handed john hook, and he uses the glass every time, and good for him he was able to play most of the game. they like the rest of him. but with all the times out in the sense you tournament games, and look at him inside. he can just use his body, he can move you away, and he was the difference in the game for nc state. >> in a format like this, it's all hands on deck. >> you got to play the hallway. >> he was 9 of 12 from the field, 11 rebounds. >> how many guesses? i think he had five or six assists in the game also. >> he goes inside a crowd and he can just dish it out. >> he sure does. and for sure the last part of the game, they ran their offense through burns. they made sure he touched it, and if he didn't have it, he was, he's got that
8:18 pm
peripheral vision. he'll find the other guy. he'll make the right play. >> so what can we say about the run of the oakland golden grizzlies and jack gohlke, who, who select the >> instagram followers bloomed up to 13,500. >> you know, it's incredible, because gohlke started his career in hillsdale college, which was a division ii school, and he transferred to oakland for one year. this is the one year he transferred, and now he's a national name. i mean, he is -- he is an unbelievable three-point shooter, and the incredible statistic is, the whole year, he only, he only attempted, like, eight or 92 point shots. every shot he, he attended was a three-point shot. and again, he came up with a magnificent game, so, you know, he was, he's really been the story of the tournament. too bad oakland is out, but they, they had a great run. no question about it. >> the game that i was really excited to see, when my feet hit the floor, with michigan state and their game against the north carolina tar heels.
8:19 pm
let's take a look at this one today, because man, this was greatly anticipated. also the two great programs. huber davis looking to take his tar heels back to the sweet 16 for the second time in three years. michigan state always tough in march. dave is no good for the heels, and in transition, tyson walker a big three. put michigan state up by 12 early, but the heels came storming back. second half, rj davis knocked down a three to put the heels up seven, and then under seven play, caroline on the break, big shock for stanford transfer harrison ingram! in the night with five trees in the game. we go to under five to play, and then davis couldn't get the layout to go, but jail in washington was right there for the back slam. unc won it 85-69, as they are making noise out of the western bracket that you can see there as the heels, boy, they just, they're just adolescent. both programs just battle tested.
8:20 pm
they're either going to play alabama or grand canyon next. >> and you look at north carolina. north carolina has been great for years. this is an outstanding north carolina team. cormac ryan, another transfer from stanford, i thought, you know, had a solid game. but when you have a cut inside to make all kinds of place, and you have rj davis, you can run the floor, and he's like a, he's a, just a leader and a guy that can do it. so north carolina is, they're special. they're going to be very difficult to knock out of the tournament. they can play as slow. they love to play up and down and take it to the rim. they can defend the basket, and to me, they caught is a difference maker. he's the one guy in a tournament that you know he's going to get his 20 and 10 every game. >> but i tell you, this fellow, ingram, he was feeling it. he just had to keep beating it. five threes in a game! >> ingram, to me, is like cormac ryan. they're wildcard in the game. you know davis is good. you know you're going to get inside play with, with
8:21 pm
bacot. but if you can get ingram on the outside making threes, ryan making threes, then that elevates north carolina to another level. >> in fact, bacot was talking about his teammate after the game. >> it kind of looked like a harrison ingram get there when he got going. harry actually told me yesterday that he was going to put up a few time performance today, and in games like these when it gets real rowdy and physical and in the trenches, we know this is a hairy type of game. so it was no doubt in my mind that he was going to really show up big time for us and hit big shots. >> moving on from this one, and you know what, coach? the only thing that can stop us as a commercial. we're going to get take it right now. you fans of st. mary's, you want answers? well, we're here to show you what they said after another early exit for the gael
8:22 pm
it's time to get away and cache in, at cache creek casino resort, to rock and to roll. to go all out or... go all in. with four stars and rising stars, northern california's premier casino resort is the perfect place... ...to do as much -or as little- as you want. make your get away now and cache in at cache creek casino resort.
8:23 pm
8:24 pm
all right, st. mary's and home last night in spokane. 80 mahaney struggled against grand canyon's athletic events. vied for 21 shooting, and the envelopes were just too much at the other end, with 47 second half points. they got their first tournament win in school history, and another early round elimination for randy bennetts gaels's. >> grand canyon, good program. they're, they played well enough to win, so we did not. >> we played plenty of athletic teams before, but i don't know if it's like the jitters of march madness or whatever it was, but we didn't play as well as we could've there. >> we just weren't ready to play the way we usually play , and they were really physical, and i don't know why we didn't expect that, because we knew they were going to be physical, and they were going to try to knock us out of our rhythm, and we still turned the ball over, so, yeah. i think
8:25 pm
we, we just didn't have a good game at all. >> never felt like we were going to stop fighting. that's why it hurts so much to lose with this group, especially now in the tournament, because we're such a tough and tightknit group, and it hurts for all the right reasons, man. that's what's great about college basketball, and that's what sucks about it. >> coach, nobody knew anything about grand canyon. isn't it human nature to maybe overlook or underestimate an opponent like them? they blocked nine shots. they forced 13 gaels turnovers. >> blocking nine shots is a big deal, as a lot of those shot blocks stay in play and you go to the other end and you score. and, listen, this is to take nothing away from st. mary's. they had a tremendous year, okay? you shouldn't be measured totally on how you play in the ncaa tournament, although it's important. but still, the gaels, if you're not shooting the ball and you're not getting that guard play, i don't want to put it
8:26 pm
all on mahaney or marshall lowness or dukas, who didn't have a good game, but grand canyon controlled the temple. they got ahead in the second half. they won the game at the free-throw line. they got to the free-throw line, kept making free throws. st. mary's now desperation threes, the other way, and that's what happened in college basketball. go deep on you in a hurry. >> well, you know how it is in these type of formats. it's one game. i just picked a bad night for a shooting night because i, that's not, that's not the st. mary's that we know. >> no, it's not the st. mary's we know. but the fact is, grand canyon is good. you know, they have a good team. and if you don't play your best, with a win, like, 28 or 29 games this year? i mean, it's not a fluke. and they got a shot blocker inside. so st. mary's just couldn't get it going at the right time. it's unfortunate. we all were hoping that they could get, they move on, but, but you have to play your best in the ncaa tournament. >> all right, so we'll look at a video of aidan mahaney, right? you put your arm around him, just, this is two years of college, but 9 for 39 in two
8:27 pm
tournament appearances. what you tell him? >> well, keep shooting. that's what you tell him. keep playing. you're going to get another opportunity next year. he's going to be back, you know, marshall lowness is going to be back. they will have guys available, and hopefully st. mary's can do it again and get to the tournament. so he's played enough good games where he's had 25, and it just didn't happen that it worked for him tonight. but keep your confidence up, and the other thing you tell him, we can't win if you don't, if you don't play well. so we need you to go ahead and keep shooting the ball. >> so they slate st. mary's. are they, are they a cinderella? >> well, i think they're a cinderella that, like you said, nobody knows. nobody in the country. i mean -- >> alabama doesn't know them, and they face alabama next! >> and alabama, by the way, you know, you'd better be ready, because they've got to better but defend the three against alabama. so i think grand canyon, like st. mary's, could control the tempo of the game.
8:28 pm
they have the guy that can defend the room inside, and who knows? their goal is to keep it close, win it in the last 10 minutes. >> all right, so we go from, well, the end of st. mary's, gone after this one and done, and they will transition into what we've got coming up on this march madness show. we will transition to the ladies side. top seed usc won today in the west, and second stage stanford, with two time conference play of the year cameron bring. handled this busine
8:29 pm
8:30 pm
stanford star cameron brink led the cardinals to a 29 point win in her opening round game against golden state last night. she filled up the stat sheet, 17 points, 15 rebounds, and six blocks. stanford plays iowa state tomorrow night, in what will be break and fellow senior hannah jumps final game at maples pavilion. >> when i think of someone's last game, i think of the great games that someone like maybe lexi hall had. i think she had 36 points. so i'm hoping that's in the, the water cooler, you know, that cam and hannah dressed really bid farewell on a real high note. cam has been a, just an outstanding player for our program. >> i got to play with her a
8:31 pm
long time growing up, and now to be here at stanford, you know, it's their last game together at maples, and i think we're just going to soak up the moment and just really enjoy our last game out there together. >> all right, a trip to the sweet 16 is on the line as they will play iowa state tomorrow. recycling center audie crookes dropped 40 points in their first round win. back to alabama! abraxas years led the crimson tide with 30 points in their first round win yesterday, and nobody enjoyed it more than mom. look how she looked as she was on her son's game! even mirroring the moves. maybe nate oates could move her down to the bench? >> she's telling me she's, i don't never see her, i'm focused on the game. you know, when i go back and look at the tv replay after the game, she's telling me she's getting more into it on defense, so, like, maybe it's, like, some synergy between the two of them. like, he gets a better sense if she gets in a better stance on the defensive end. so i, she's, she's got a lot of energy, you know. we need mark playing with the same
8:32 pm
energy she's cheering with. >> all right, so let's bring in matt loudly. somewhere through the grapes and the vineyards in napa valley is a basketball factory? >> yeah, it sounds pretty bizarre, doesn't it? i would say wine is that the only thing getting ice in napa. plenty of guys playing right now in march. they sought out napa for one of the most prestigious basketball prep schools in the nation, and the next crop of guys, looking for the one shining moment, they're finishing up their time there right now. >> feel like i got better, you know? that's what i came here for. >> the best high schoolers in the country uproot their lives to play for prolific prep. even if they've never heard of the town it's in. >> when it got out, it was like, he's moving to callie. and i'm like, it's not what y'all think. i'm moving to napa, not callie. >> when i first moved here, i was like, shocked, like, it's not anything i use to. >> i started asking a bunch of people, and they said it's known for wine. i'm like, i don't drink wine, so i'm not
8:33 pm
interested. >> thankfully for zoom dlo, he was still sold on the basketball. prolific is a prep school that plays in the grind session , a national league consisting of the top players who are set to play d1 basketball. >> it provides me, like, with great coaching for sure. >> associate head coach caleb vanderburg says they offer something other high schools just simply can't be >> a way to kind of improve your skills and sharpen your eye, and it's going against the best every day, which, fortunately, you know, we can do here. >> the school has a history of great players, including jaelyn green. this year, they have three mcdonald's all-american players in diallo, aden cheryl, and gary on read. >> man, it's a green from crew, to be honest. like, being a little kid, i just, you know, watch those games as a dream and trying to picture myself in it, and to be a part of it is just an extreme blessing. >> i'm a hard worker for a good reason.
8:34 pm
>> all three are on the espn top 100 list, and considered top prospects at their respective positions. >> when we're recruiting these guys in the summer, like, we all knew, like, they had the possibility of being a dominoes all-american, but until it really comes out on the screen, it doesn't really hit you. >> these high schoolers have to leave their friends and family behind to live in napa with both parents while living and breathing basketball. >> being away for my mom, it was tough at first, but i got use to it. they're very welcoming. they're cool people. we have a great talk. it feels like a second home for sure. >> i'm so use to being with my mom and dad, and being with host family is kind of like a little bit different, but they care for you, they take care of you. it feels like another family. >> every weekend we come back, we basically get, like, two, three days here, and then we leave again. and the next weekend, and the next weekend. it's been tiring. it's been crazy. but again, it's kind of like college. >> as they all prepare for life at a power five school, they feel lucky they cut their teeth against the best in napa, california. >> we have to be so determined
8:35 pm
that kind of realize that it's for, like, a better future. it's for, like, your family. it's kind of bigger than you. >> all right, gary on read and aden cheryl two alabama comets, so they're watching nate oates and that alabama team right now. they'll be playing there next year for the crimson tide. but march madness is littered with guys from prolific prep. the alumni, you really got to go online and check it out to see all the names. i could never recite them. it wouldn't fit into the hour that we have here. it's incredible how many guys that graduated to the next level. >> man, boy, they certainly have something growing. >> ! >> in napa valley. >> very punny. >> all right, we got more game on this march madness show ahead. connecticut huskies, coach's superstition? and this tournament has been profitable for this northwestern
8:36 pm
8:37 pm
8:38 pm
>> you can just call us the underdogs. i've been here five years, i don't remember a time when we weren't underdogs, so, i mean, it's nothing new. >> northwestern's brooks barnhizer has hit the tying shot in the final seconds yesterday to send the game to overtime. the wildcats pulled away from fau, florida atlantic. they are double digit underdogs to connecticut, but that shot landed barnhizer an and il endorsement deal with buffalo wild wings! >> i thought it was kind of cool. i thought it was kind of funny, because it had happened really fast, because they wouldn't get it out there, so i don't know if we saw the pictures are not. but, yeah, it was is kind of cool. i'm kind of a dry rub guide, not really into, like, a lot of sausage, so kind of a basic i, rethink pretty cool opportunity. >> all right, so it northwestern top seed uconn. that game is tomorrow in brooklyn. the defending champions blew out stetson in round one. where all five starters scored in double figures, including point guard kam spencer. he's the younger brother of warriors guard pat
8:39 pm
spencer, who scored his first nba point earlier this week. the goal there spencer was a lacrosse player in college, but if we're getting basketball a try in his final year at northwestern. >> we were actually texting a little bit yesterday. you know, he's mad that the bracket's shook out the way they did, you know, where we got to play against his brother. he only played one year of organized ball in college with us , and now to see him up three years later be on an nba roster, i mean, what an incredible testament to his work, and what an athlete, right? i mean, that's just an incredible story. could it be more proud of what he's doing, although i thought his dunk was kind of week the other night. i told him, i said, you're more athletic than that. you should've, like, windmill or something. he told me he'd been sitting on the floor for 2 1/2 hours, so he's a little stiff. >> all right, all right, now, coach, now, if you're at uconn, and you have 7'2" donovan kling and, what your confidence level?
8:40 pm
>> well, kling and is really good. yeah. you feel good about it. i mean, the way uconn is playing, they're playing at a high level, and, you know, he is a guy that can finish way over the rim, as you see right there. pretty darn active for a big man. he's just not a 7'2" guy that stands around. he's got some lift. he's got the ability to start a block some shots, and he's a very active guy, you know? so, of course, connecticut's got so many newtons and unbelievable play. they got so many guys that the odds on favorite still repeat. so it's going to be a tough task for northwestern. >> all right, let's transition and talk about the head coach. now, if you wondered if is head coach dan hurley is one of those game day same routine guys, here's an answer. >> you know about the draws, right? the draws, the underwear. you know, my wife might, you know, she was churning the hand, had water last night. when i left this morning, they were hanging, and they looked droopy, but she had
8:41 pm
the, the hair dryer on hot, and she had a concoction set up to dry them. the sox got holes in them, because i'm running the same stocks. i was having success in employment, i was just wearing that plain blue suit and that same dress shirt. i broke it back out last march, and the things that the dry cleaner. i'm going to wear that until somebody takes me out. >> what do you make of these guys, coach, with their routine? >> just another game. i guess when you have an ncaa tournament, you know, you're kind of loose the second time around, you know? >> but you didn't have, like, i don't know, the same breakfast, same cup of coffee? no? >> no. let's get to the game. i have no idea what i ate, how long i slept or anything else. >> all right, we're going to talk about a guy that really has game, and in this game, size matters. and i don't going to get an argument from the uss don spence program, which went out and got 23 wins.
8:42 pm
>> the san francisco dons have now won 20 or more games in 7 of their last late seasons, and it wouldn't have been possible this year without a little help from the transfer portal. >> the transfer portal is something that has kind of blown up here in the last few years. >> the don found a hidden gem in jonathan bobo. >> i had high expectations. i didn't know what was going to snowball the way that it has been so we got a little lucky too. >> the secrets out now. bobo is 1 of just 17 division i players to average 10 or more rebounds. >> i was a late bloomer, so, you know, just always having that mind-set, like, he could do it. >> playing at the college level almost didn't happen for mogbo. standing just 5'9" entering high school, the undersized guard didn't have any division i operas after his senior season. >> and then my mom asked me if i really wanted to do it, and, you know, started crying, and
8:43 pm
then, you know, i just, you know, told myself in my head i'm going to make that change. >> after a growth spurt and two years in junior college, mogbo finally got his opportunity. >> like you like my first year was definitely a learning experience for me. you know, did some numbers nothing like now, but, you know, in fact it's been a following a season at missouri state, mogbo entered his name in the transfer portal. and as for his call came from a familiar face. >> and there was a junior college event up in colorado, and he was literally the first guy to come when i entered the gym. he was on the left wing, he drove right, he dunked it, and as you guys have seen, he is a, he's a highlight reel. >> now, mogbo is dominating the west coast conference. he's the only player in the league averaging a double double, and his positions to become the first west coast conference player of the year at san francisco since canyon jones in 2000. >> he does so many things for our group. if we did not have jonathan mogbo , then i think
8:44 pm
our season could be different. >> the scary thing is he's not even close to where we can get to, you know? and that's fun to be involved with guys like that and just kind of watch their climb. >> all right, i'm not going to call him bill russell, but, i mean, he's a guy, he 6'9", but he plays bigger. >> more like about six foot 7 1/2, but it, it's not how big you are, it's how big you play. and he's one of the great standstill, doesn't need any run jumpers, gets all the way to the rim, and he's a real big talent. the other thing i really like about mogbo is you see him driving here. he's a terrific passer. he understands the game, he can find a way to block shots. he plays under control. chris has really done a beautiful job at usf. you know, he's got a great demeanor. they've recruited well. you know, beasley was the freshman of the year. williams is a heck of a player. by the way, when you play the dons, they got about nine, 10 guys. they come at you
8:45 pm
in waves, and they're tough to handle. unfortunately they lose by one in the nit at connecticut why not play the game at usf? everybody going to win that game. jonathan mogbo is a big talent, and he's had a great year. >> all right, there's the music. okay, time out on the floor here. we are back with more march madness in agency. there >> going off court with this the one player
8:46 pm
8:47 pm
west bracket, okay. where clinton will take on third-seeded baylor tomorrow for a trip to l.a. the tigers beat new mexico in around one and notice they didn't get a lot of respect from the experts. >> you can't turn on the, you know, tv and radio, and i know,
8:48 pm
you know, somewhere on espn, we were the first, you know, we were, there were 10, 10 upsets, and we were number one. it was like we were the guarantied upset in round one. so i certainly mentored it to our players. our players were well aware, but we didn't, like, plastered all over everybody's locker and everything like that. >> in the south region, top-seeded houston will takes on texas a&m tomorrow. that'll be in phoenix. i should say, memphis. and we know that cougs coach kelvin sampson will be ready to clock in for work. >> i don't think i ever missed a day of school. from the first of the 12th grade. when i say i don't think i did, i did not, because i have a 12 year certificate that says i never missed a day of school. and that's because of my mom and dad if you're going to be sick, you're going to be sick at school. >> all right, coach, how about it? houston, texas a&m, this is a potential bracket buster.
8:49 pm
>> yeah, potentially, but, you know, i think houston, i thought, you know, they were not healthy coming into the tournament. roberts hurt his knee in that iowa state game when iowa state was about in the finals of the big 12 tournament, but he's back, he's playing well. wells, who with her for a month and a half, his back playing, and they've got a shed and crier. you know, houston's back rolling again. now, texas a&m is going to have to be at the top of their game to beat houston. i think houston, to me, is a favorite to win this one. >> all right, so college basketball players, they certainly are having their moment with march madness. safety linebacker trey jenkins is waiting for his moment, a chance to showcase his skills for nfl scouts. >> i mic'd up right now. >> i am more than just an athlete. >> a light moment for trey jenkins during a training session. son is a states probate was coming up. time for this safety hybrid linebacker to work on his speed.
8:50 pm
>> if you really want it, and it's something that's hard to achieve, it's going to be hard, and you're going to have multiple pines were it's dead ends. what if you never stop, you know, finding that avenue. >> for 12 years, playing in the nfl has been a dream of his is growing up in stockton. so the 23-year-old trains more a lot of the aspiring pros go, california street in los gatos. owner, director dave spence saw number 22's playmaking ability for the spartans and took him on. >> how strong is he? is he, is he strong enough to play like a linebacker? so once he gets off the bench press, i think those questions are going to be answered. and then once he lines up for the 40, you know, that other question is going to be answered. so size, speed, kiss had it all. >> did i get full extension? >> the nfl draft is in april.
8:51 pm
every day of training has been a grind. every day, his body pays the price. >> how hot is it in here? >> 170 right now. >> a while. >> going to get up to 190. >> so you go hot and then cold? >> immediately then cold, and back to hot, back to cold, back to, and then back to gold. >> wow. what does it do for you? >> it's a lot to do with recovery. >> what you get in like it's nothing! it is really cold? >> oh, it's super cold. it's about 40 degrees. >> white, 170, like 40 degrees? >> yeah. and it's off the body. >> can you lying in bed and, and, and visualize you wearing an nfl uniform? >> yeah. and i don't know which one it is, but i know i'll be wearing one. >> all right, so jenkins pro date was this weekend, and that clip that you saw of him in the gym, he benched 225 pounds 26
8:52 pm
times, which would've been tops among the fifth of backs at the lead combines earlier this month. the league draft is april 25th through the 27th. we're back to wrap things up on this march madness show after this.

another one in the books. but we're just getting started. everything going well? oh yeah. let's take a look at this knee. because it's the work behind the scenes, that truly matters. [ physical therapy staff discusses results ] for your mind. for your body. and for the community. -team! for all that is me,
8:54 pm
for all that is you. kaiser permanente. >> all right. the madness continues tomorrow on cbs, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with colorado and marquette. who can bet shock the smart will have his team ready for battle. >> over the summer, we went to italy, took our guys to the roman coliseum. >> are you not entertained? >> and all year long, we've been using the analogy that,
8:55 pm
hey, you guys are gladiators. everybody else's the crowd. >> buffaloes big bad eddie lack and will be waiting for him. listen, at 611, 265, he scored 21 point, and colorado's thrilling win over florida. laskin transferred to the bus last year from tcu. head coach cadwell had been a fan from the first time he saw him play. >> he was at tcu at the time. i didn't know that. and we're doing our scrimmage, and he is just an absolute beast. now, he's going against 18-year-olds, but his physical presence, his energy he played with, i'd like, holy. and i thought he was like a european pro that was like back for the summer. like, his body, like, he looked like he was 26 years old, 27 years old. and one of the, one of the guys on our staff that, no, that eddie lampkin, who, he's going to be, like a sophomore tcu. i'm like, all i thought to myself
8:56 pm
was, like, don't schedule tcu, is this dude is a problem. >> yale took down number four state auburn in the first round. the ivy league chance will face san diego state tomorrow. head coach james jones phone has been blowing up over the last 24 hours, including a message from his fifth-grade teacher, who has been in his corner for nearly 50 years! >> i remember being just awestruck by this email that i received from her, and she told me that i was her favorite student of all time. and she was my favorite teacher. and since then, we've reconnected. she still lives on long island. she watches all the gains. she sent me a text message after every game, so my connections are really strong, but when i was in fifth grade, excuse me, when i went to sixth grade, my class was across the hall from my fifth-grade class. and my sixth grade teacher didn't like me nearly as much as misses kass did. and one day, i was getting yelled at by my sixth grade teacher, who shall go
8:57 pm
nameless. and misses katz came into our room, knocked on the door, and asked to speak to her outside, and she just gave her a tongue lashing, and that moment, having someone protect me at the age of 12, just gave me a lot of confidence in myself to go in and do and to be, and i owe a lot to pamela katz for, for protecting me, so to speak, way back when. >> wow! boy, what a story there, coach! >> i'm going to give you time to think about it, but i remember my fifth-grade teacher with ira lewis at kilby school in florence, alabama. do you remember your fifth-grade teacher? >> no, no. it was notre dame in san francisco. no clue. sister, was sister somebody. she must've put up with me, i'll tell you that. >> hey, let me ask you, how do
8:58 pm
you feel about yelp tomorrow? >> i feel good about yale. i think yale, after watching the play, yells, yells good, you know? and i, i think that's a maybe the first, first team to get to 50 wins, you know? they got san diego state. so those are both kind of both teams. so i don't look for the numbers to be big and that game would >> running downtime on show, what are your final thoughts after today? i mean -- eight more tomorrow! >> i know. i mean, today, you got to really be happy, at least i am, for arizona and gonzaga, you know? i'm a west guy. for tomorrow, and we haven't talked about this much, i told you a couple days ago, perdue cannot lose early. it's a redemption , just like it was for virginia a couple of years ago. they always get knocked out in the first round. two 8030 point 20 rebounds, first guy since joe smith way back in, you know, about 1980 to get 30-20 in a game. so i'm looking forward to purdue-utah state tomorrow. >> there's the music playing us off. hope you enjoyed this
8:59 pm
march madness show, and you know what, we got another one tomorrow! thanks so
