you are here and that makes it easier to digest. >> the sunshine in our clouds. >> she is. >> oh. well. thank you. so good to be back with all of you. and as we head through the afternoon, get ready for the rain. so my advice is pack that umbrella and that rain jacket and you will need it later on today. as a cold front pushes through bringing the rain and windy conditions and the chance for isolated thunderstorms as well. so as we take you through the day you can see the rain chances really picking up by this afternoon and by this evening. with this weather system. so let's take you through the day at least in the morning as we go to san francisco. and you can see looking at at least dry start for the morning and early afternoon. and then that rain returns for you as we look ahead to the afternoon and especially by the evening. for san jose it's going to take longer for the rain to move in for you. so looking at by this afternoon, upper 60s with partly cloudy skies and then that rain will move in as we head through the evening for you in san jose. okay. i want to show you the highs for

today. so for the north bay you are going to see that rain first as that cold front marches across the bay area. and that's why santa rosa you will be in the upper 50s this afternoon, a big difference with our weather for you. much cooler and 62 in san francisco and 64 across the peninsula and redwood city. 68 in fremont for the east bay and for the south bay and againlooking at the temperatures on the mild to warm side. because you are going to see that rain a little bit later and we're talking upper 60s? san jose. we'll time it out for you on futurecast and taking you hour-by-hour and when will the rain will arrive for you coming up. all right, check in with gianna for a look at traffic. and it's nice to have at least a dry morning commute, g. i know. it makes a difference since we know the rain is on the way. enjoy this while you can. before that wet weather settles in. golden gate bridge, nice commute right now. over to the bay bridge, i just checked in with caltrans and chp. they turned on the metering lights at the bay bridge toll plaza. a few more

cars out there over to san francisco but no backup and no major brake lights or major issues there and most of the freeways are still pretty quiet on this friday morning. reed? all right, g. thank you. san franciscans holding a rally today demanding a suffer sentence for a man who pled guilty. 94-year-old an pension taylor attacked by a man out on bail. taylor was out for the walk when daniel cauich stabbed her multiple times. she survived. fast forward to 2024 and the news of that sentencing infuriated many. cauich just got probation. so today san francisco da brooke jenkins and members of the asian and senior community will protest the sentencing on the steps of the hall of justice. they are calling for stricter penalties especially for repeat offenders. that protest starts during our 8:00 a.m. broadcast over on pix+ 44 cable 12. and we will be there. apple going toe to toe with the u.s. department of justice

after the doj file a blockbuster antitrust lawsuit against the silicon valley based company. there's a lot to unpack in thesuit but essentially the feds say apple has a monopoly with the iphone ecosystem and you the buyer pay the expense. apple says the suit threatenings innovation and sets a dangerous precedent that allows government to influence what they sell. another government shutdown looms which would turn off the money washington spend to keep the country up and running. so ahead of the midnight deadline, your elected representatives have a $1.2 trillion spending package to consider. a boost in military spending which is something that house speaker mike johnson spent month negotiating. get tighted. a big day ahead of us for colleges sports here in the bay. they will hit the hardwood in the ncaa tournament. and they're going to play at the same time so maybe have two screens ready to go. start with symptomaticmy

tonight at maples pavilion. tip-off is at 7:00 and this is stanford's 36th consecutive ncaa tournament bid. well, all the talk this morning after the first round on the men's side oakland university out of rochester, michigan. the team clinched its first win in the round of 64 in school history. thank you oakland. this is a shake-up especially by beating third seed kentucky and oakland which we all know is not our oakland. faces nc state in the second round tomorrow. so this drives us to the brackets and the likely change in yours. given oakland's shocker. after the big upset the ncaa estimated ■ only about 0.04% of men's tournament brackets remain perfect. exactly. >> i real it's not our oakland but that's why i chose oakland and that's why i'm in second place -- fourth place because there's a three way tie insecond place. but yeah emotional chase of oakland. i was born in the hospital. >> that's what wins. i mean, that's why you are doing so

stage before they open up here later this morning and get you to fully appreciate what goes into this release. we understand there's a little bit of drama and our max darrow caught up with the team behind this ipa to help us appreciate what was a little bit of a scare and almost threatened the 20th anniversary release. >> reporter: each bottle that makes its way down this conveyor belt and gets stamped with this label will tell the story of pliny the younger. and this year's brew has quite the story. >> this is a big -- big moment. >> reporter: which is why natalie cilurzo smiled as she watched the bottling process unfold. her team at the russian river brewing company spends a ton of time preparing for the two week exclusive release of the triple ipa. and there was a moment in january where disaster almost struck. >> we did have a power outage during january, during the storms. >> reporter: it lasted for a few days. while it didn't

affect the beer going into these bottles -- >> we had just packaged our pliny the younger for distribution. so we had a warehouse cold box full of draft pliny the younger and we were -- definitely stressing out about that. >> reporter: luckily, for pliny's sake, cilurzo says they were able to get a generator and they installed a switch gear as well. >> we had -- we had not been able to get that generator, we may have -- we could have lost some younger. >> reporter: that would have been a big disappointment for pliny enthusiasts and for russian river's bottom line. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: alex miller says people camp out to get their hands on this beer. >> a lot of times i'll be closing up here the night before at 9:00 and there's already people in line camping out. i had people from india before. from australia and new zealand. >> reporter: over the two week period, they expect to see -- >> anywhere from around 12,000, 14,000. yeah, definitely a lot of people. >> reporter: for perspective, that's about half the population of the entire town of windsor. as the bottles filled up, cilurzo was busy

tidying up the handout. for guests with the information and story behind the beer. the label shows mount vesuvius erupting. hops and bottles over the russian river brewing company, a nod to the roman history character. by hind the character whose namesake the beer comes from. >> he was a well respected author. >> reporter: which started as a creative way to drum up some much-needed business 20 years ago has turned into an integral part of russian river brewing's story. one cilurzo is quite proud of. >> you know, it's a really big year for us. and the beer tastes amazing, so really happy about that. >> reporter: and one that seems to be able to weather whatever comes its way. >> reporter: all right, our thanks to max for that look at just what it takes to make this happen every year. especially this seasonand let's meet someone who has been waiting in line. this is brandon montgomery from sacramento. tell us, what makes someone like you want to come out here and be a part of the wait to

get the release of this ipa? >> well, excellent craft beer. excellent beer. and also same thing for -- do threaps at least once in your life. it's my first year doing this. and just not just about the beer, it's about the people you meet and the experience you share with the people and overall amazing experience for a great beer. >> reporter: right. and i just want people to appreciate you have the awesome shirt. tell us about the podcast. >> brew stilled. different topics over a beer and also do interviews with those in the craft beer industry. >> reporter: what do you think of the fact that so many people are here and that some have even spent the night out here. >> i think it's great. a tradition for a lot of people. helps keep tradition allay. >> reporter: brandon, thank you so much for being here. we know he is part of the commitment and decided to show up the night before and been waiting here since early in the morning and is excited to go in this

you liked the sunshine and the warmer weather, you are going to notice a big change with our weather. and in fact, it's really that weather flipping the switch for us as we are looking at more of that winter weather returning as we look to the next seven days. so unsettled weather that active weather pattern really setting up for us for the next couple of days for today and the weekend into next week. first of all the first weather system we have is a cold front that moves in later on today. this afternoon and this evening get ready for the rain returning just pack the umbrella and if you are heading out the door and that rain jacket. you will need it later on today. now let's time it out for you. taking you hour-by-hour, and you can see on futurecast, the rain will arrive first for the north bay and really that line pushing through rest of the bay area. so by 3:00 p.m. you can see the rain for right around the bay. stopping the clock again at 6:30. a mess for the evening commute and you can

really see that line of heavy rain as it moves through and then for the east bay, the south bay, you can see that rain pushing in for tonight. this is stopping the clock at 8:00 p.m. then for tomorrow, we're not done yet as the low pressure system will bring enough instability for rethe chance for some isolated thunderstorms for your saturday. and we are looking at some shower chances even for sunday morning as well. and temperatures are really going to take a dip as we look to our weekend. picking up for today through the weekend and anywhere from a quarter, half inch to three quarters of an inch of rain. and rain for us in the bay area and a lot of snow up in the sierra. we're talking heavy snow with the winter storm warning that will be in effect later on today and through the weekend. all right, i want to show you our daytime high temperatures as we go through our day. so for the north bay you are going to see the rain and because of that, it's going to be much cooler for the north bay upper 50s for you in santa rosa. right around the bay looking at 62 in san francisco. 62 for you in

oakland and the peninsula, mid 60s for you in redwood city. and for the south bay, the rain will arrive later for you. and so because of that, it's going to be a warmer day and upper 60s in san jose and then the rain will move in for you. so i want to show you the 7 day forecast and what you can expect. not only the rain coming in, but also cooler temperatures. check it out inland. we're talking upper 50s for your saturday with scattered showers. a big drop in temperatures and again the chance for some showers in the morning and at least for sunday. and then a break monday, tuesday and then more rain moves in for the middle part of next week. and then as we look to right around the bay and that 7 day forecast, again, for you as well, much cooler for the weekend with shower chances catching a break monday, tuesday and then another weather system by next wednesday. all right, let's check in with gianna and boy, that evening commute is going to be a mess with widespread rain later on today. yeah, i'm glad you said

welcome back. a bay area scientist may know how to help the animal endangered by climb change. elizabeth cook explains the threat to the arctic fox and the help coming in this morning's "project earth." >> reporter: the arctic fox. their playful nature and distinctive look make them one of the most captivating creatures in the wild. but

arctic foxes are in trouble. experts say they need to hunt rodents to survive long winters. and climate change is making their prey rare and harder to find. >> if we get warmer, warmer and more unstable climate, where you get snow melt and you get icing on the ground, that's going to affect how well the rodents can survive. >> reporter: thousands of miles away in the bay area, stanford professor of biology elizabeth hadly. she cautions the arctic fox is not the only species under threat. >> absolutely not. the -- arctic fox is not the only species threatened by climate change and human activities. >> reporter: hadly studies the loss of biodiversity in a human dominated world. she explains how human activity and climate change are challenging the survival of many species around the world. >> extinction happens in a heartbeat. and evolution takes a very long time. so it's easier to kind of kill something than it is to allow it to persist. so biodiversity

is threatened in many ways by humanity. and the arctic foxes exemplify those threats. >> reporter: back in the arctic, norwegian scientists set up more than 30 feeding stations across the wilderness. they believe without this food, the fox would go extinct. >> if we stop the feeding now, we would see a decrease in the population sizes and that would be really detrimental. >> reporter: the international union for the conservation of nature reported how over 44,000 species are now threatened with extinction. dr. hadly believes we have a moral responsibility to consider what we could do to stem the loss. >> it requires major activities on the part of humanity. not just a single person. we can all do our share, but it requires major, major action for us to consider what we can do to stem global change. >> reporter: including reducing greenhouse gases and preserving wildlife habitats, so we can

right now on cbs news bay area at 6:30, taking a live look at the jewel box of san francisco. all the beautiful lights. it's a first alert weather day though. and mary, term us why it's a first alert weather day and i know we're all bracing for impact because the sunny days are a thing of the past. >> it's going to be a big change for us. so we are looking at the rain returning as well as windy conditions and the chance for some thunderstorms as well. so it's a dry start to our day but that will be changing as we head through our afternoon and for the evening. so there we go with the timing taking you through. so again, as we head through later on today, the afternoon and especially by this evening, we're talking about widespread rain as a cold front pushes across the bay area. so let's take you through the day in santa rosa, the rain will arrive first for

you. even by noon looking at the rain returning for you and arriving. as we look to what to expect in the concord in the east bay, a little bit longer. by later on this afternoon, and especially by this evening, that's when the rain will arrive for you. now i want to show you our daytime highs temperatures so again i just showed you santa rosa and as we go through our day today, with that rain returning earlier for you it's going to be much cooler in santa rosa in the upper 50s. right around the bay 62 for you in san francisco and oakland. half-moon bay along the coast mid 60s and upper 60s in fremont. and for the south bay, it's going to take a little bit longer for that cold front to reach you. and with it the temperatures will be in the upper 60s in san jose before the rain arrives. we're going to time it out for you taking you hour-by-hour on futurecast. and when you can expect to see the rain where you live. all right, let's check in with gianna for a look at traffic. and it's nice that it's dry

now. how's it look on the roadways right now? quiet mary, in fact a live look hear at the bay bridge. they turned on the metering lights but not really tracking any major brake lights or issues. across the upper deck it's a little crowded but again it's friday light. which we love to say. a few slow spots south 880 from 92 into hayward. and also that altamont pass commute for supercommuters. but that's always busy for a weekday commute. but overall, so far, so good. sort of just bracing for a busier commute expected this evening because of the wet weather. nicole? it's time now for the look at the mournings room stories. a robbery suspect in alameda county stands accused of being responsible for the death of an alleged accomplice and murder charges are now likely. prosecutors say trayvon johnson was part of a group of men who tried to rob an armored truck in east oakland in 2022. one of those men was killed when a security guard opened fire and prosecutors want to hold johnson accountable for that death. if convicted, he could

face life in prison. we now know that a lafayette man was the person killed in a wrong-way crash on 580 in oakland earlier in week. police say 57-year-old lee david wiener was the driver who was hit and killed when the suspects from a smash and grab at the tobacco store led police on a freeway chase. two suspects and another driver have major injuries. when it comes to california's homeless crisis, just about the only thing everyone can agree on is that there's no easy fix. so voters just green lit a pricey plan to throw $6 billion statewide at helping the unhoused and while we await the impact of that money, homelessness, mental illness and addiction issues in san francisco's tenderloin are really ground zero for that program. and people are there. they're working hard to build bridges in the tenderloin. and our itay hod shows you the story of a man determined to shine a light on the region's

most precious commodity. its people. >> reporter: while many photographers have documented the hardships of those living on the gritty streets of the tenderloin, amos gregory takes a different approach. actually inviting them into his studio. >> taking someone who's never had, you know, the opportunity to have the lights in front of them. and within five minutes, you know, you have got this professional model that's posing for you. >> reporter: for the last couple of months, amos has photographed dozens of locals, hoping to capture the tender side of the tenderloin. for most of his subjects, this is the first time they've ever sat for a professional portrait. >> smiles and expressions that, you know, you didn't think they had in them, start to come out. ready? >> reporter: his goal is to refocus the neighborhood's narrative by showcasing the dignity and resilience of this

often overlooked community. 54-year-old corui pounders lives in an alley just around the corner with his 2-year-old shar pei, goldie. he has been homeless on and off for two decades and like many in the tenderloin, his bed is the sidewalks. living on the streets, he says, has made him invisible to others, but not today. >> it's nice to get a little attention, you know? >> reporter: in addition to the pictures, amos also records two minute videos of his subjects telling their life stories. >> you see so much stuff on the streets, man. you see so much poverty. >> reporter: the hope, amos says, is to eventually plaster these photos all over the neighborhood. >> be nice to have community members walk down the street and see themselves featured prominently in a positive light. >> reporter: proving that even in the darkest alleys, there's

always a "flash" of humanity. [ laughter ] >> love that laugh. and love the photos and by the way, amos is a bridge builder in other ways as well. he's behind the tenderloin project that's known as veterans alley. look at that beauty where military veterans find healing through art and murals. >> i love seeing all the smiles in those photographs, really great story from itay hod. if you scroll through your social media feeds you have likely come across a get ready with me post where beauty influencers go through each step of their skin care routine showing us the latest products and friends, but for the younger set the latest skin care trends and products might do more harm than good. the feeds are also driving teens to purchase beauty products at record rates and a 2023 consumer survey done by research firm piper chandelier showed that spending on cosmetics and skin scare and ingrains jumped 19% year to year and parents, well, they

are feeling the squeeze when it comes to paying for these high priced brands. >> just like super basic because i feel like small is more. >> like many 13-year-olds these days, brenna cares a lot about her skin. wash, moisturize, then sunscreen. >> it's like super hydrating and stuff. >> guided by her mom kelly who knew the first step in her daughter's skin care routine was to make sure she was educated on the products, something she wished she knew when she was younger. >> the days of -- noxzema and, you know, st. ives. scrubs that we were told we needed to do or should do and then you find out later that putting -- broken shells on your face is probably not a good idea. [ laughter ] >> some items can be useful. some trendy and some expensive. >> i think it's just kind of finding and encouraging skin

care and taking care of your skin, but also making sure that it's not going to -- break the bank. >> with all the influencers out there, one of the greatest things that i feel so happy about is that our younger patients are getting passionate about skin care. >> dr. noc fan is the chair of dermatology for kaiser permanente who says for teens, keep it simple. >> a gentle cleanser and good sunscreen and a gentle and light moisturizer is what i would recommend to my 'tweens. >> and those seem like really good logical steps. to sort of even get them in the habit of obviously choosing healthier products i'm assuming and you know, things that don't have a lot of additives or things in it. is that something you should look for as a parent when you are getting that first skin care brand for your kids? >> absolutely. and the reason being is in our younger patients, their skin is still -- remains thin so they can be more sensitive compared to our adult patient population.
