agencies running. and a farewell in moscow. tight security is expected at today's funeral service for russian opposition leader alexei navalny. good morning, i'm jarred hill in for anne-marie green. we begin with a remarkable day at the southern border as president biden and former president trump, the likely candidates in the november presidential election, made separate visits to the border towns in texas. the trips to highlight the migrant crisis. one of the top concerns for voters. both biden and trump each delivering a different message on how to tackle the problem. naomi ruchim has the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. what a split screen moment to see both the frontrunners from each party stumping on the same issue on the same day. it shows just how much immigration reform will play into the upcoming election and why both president biden and former president trump each believe they must win on this issue.

president biden and former president trump dishing out blame in dueling visits to the border thursday. >> this is a joe biden invasion. >> it's time for the speakers and some of my republican friends in congress to show a little spine. >> reporter: the president took a tour with border patrol agents in brownsville, texas, where he also made this personal plea to his predecessor after accusing him of tanking a bipartisan border bill -- >> join me, or i'll join you in telling the congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill. we can do it together. >> reporter: a few hundred miles away in eagle pass trump was joined by texas governor greg abbott as he bashed biden for rolling back his border policies. >> we had remained in mexico, remember that? you can't come into our country. we had no more catch and release. >> reporter: sources have previously told cbs news president biden is considering executive action that would seerely restrict access to the u.s. asylum system after u.s. border patrol reported a record

2.4 million migrant crossings last year. >> it's a very big issue. we need to fix the immigration issue. >> reporter: a big issue top of mind in the lone star state as voters head to the primary polls this super tuesday. also yesterday a federal judge in austin blocked a texas state law that would allow state and local law enforcement to arrest, jail, and prosecute migrants who illegally cross the border. governor greg abbott says the state will appeal the decision. jarred? >> naomi ruchim, thank you, that's far from over. in washington congress approved a short-term spending measure to avert a partial government shutdown. in the gop-controlled house, the bill easily cleared the two-thirds majority needed for approval. it passed in the senate late yesterday with bipartisan support. the temporary measure keeps some federal agencies operating through march 8th and others through march 22nd. the most powerful pacific storm of the season is pounding

parts of california. this time with snow, heavy rain, and strong winds. a rare blizzard warning has been issued for the sierra nevada. there are avalanche warnings, up to ten feet of snow could fall by the weekend. snowy conditions prompted at least one lake tahoe resort to close today. driving could be treacherous, and power outages are also expected. the smokehouse creek fire has now become the largest wildfire in texas history. it's already burned through more than a million acres in the texas panhandle and crossed over into oklahoma. at least two people are dead. that fire only 3% contained. it's one of several wildfires burning in the panhandle right now. russian opposition leader alexei navalny will be laid to rest in moscow later today amid tight security. the funeral will take place at a church on the outskirts of moscow. he will be buried at a cemetery nearby. his allies accuse the kremlin of blocking a separate civil ceremony, memorial service that

would be happening there. navalny, a fierce critic of russian president vladimir putin, was 47 years old when he died mysteriously last month at an arctic prison colony. the kremlin denies state involvement in his death. now to the fallout in gaza over the deaths of more than 100 and a sramble near a humanitarian aid trucks. israel says that many of those killed were trampled in a stampede for food, and that its troops only fired when they felt endangered by the crowd. imtiaz tyab reports from israel, and want to warn you some of this video might be tough to watch. >> reporter: a truck once carrying lifesaving aid now piled with the bodies of those who had come in desperation for help. eyewitnesses told cbs news israeli forces opened fire as people crowded around the convoy carrying basics like flour. israel's military released this heavily edited drone video of what it says shows how many were killed in a stampede around the aid trucks.

but admitted to shooting at a smaller group of people which it described as a, quote, imminent threat. how do you define a threat? >> anybody approaching the forces, despite being warned not to pose a threat. >> reporter: how do you account for the fact that we have seen people with gunshot wounds to their chest, to their arms? >> i can't confirm that. >> reporter: the injured were rushed to the few functioning hospitals in gaza city. doctors told cbs news the majority of the dead were from gunshot wounds. israeli tanks came out and then they opened fire, this man says. this is my brother who went to bring food for his children. >> reporter: this latest violence also led to a grim milestone. the hamas-run ministry of health says more than 30,000 palestinians, mainly women and children have been killed since the start of the war between israel and hamas. that's about one in 70 people in gaza, half a million of which

are also facing acute starvation according to the u.n., with the pentagon actively planning airdrops of aid into gaza which can't come soon enough. president biden acknowledged the shootings would complicate the talks, while a hamas spokesman told cbs news they could not negotiate with israel while palestinians were killed in what he described as cold blood. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, tel aviv. back at home, an investigation is under way into a serious cyberattack on one of the nation's largest health care companies. for more than a week it has disrupted prescription orders at pharmacies all over the country. cbs' nicole sganga reports. >> reporter: a cyberattack on the health care provider change health care is wreaking havoc nationwide as hospitals and pharmacies can't get paid, and patients can't get prescriptions. >> so i mean we've seen a lot of claims coming through as a rejected claim where obviously insurance providers are not able

to pay because of this attack. >> reporter: the company discovered the hack on february 21st, disconnecting impacted systems immediately, parent company united health stated in a federal filing. change health care says it processes 15 billion transactions annually, touching one in three u.s. patient records. >> i can tell you that this cyberattack has affected every hospital in the country one way or another. >> reporter: john riggi is a national adviser at the american hospital association. >> it's not a data crime. it's not a white-collar crime. these are threats to life. >> reporter: in a since-deleted post on the dark web, a russian-speaking ransomware group known as black hat claimed responsibility alleging they stole more than six terabytes of data including sensitive medical records. change health care says it's established work-arounds for patients. for smaller hospitals are we talking about months, weeks, days? >> the smaller less resourced hospitals, our safety net

murder of a pregnant amish woman, and the suspect in a leaked classified documents case is expected to change his plea. those are some of the stories we're following in this morning's "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports massachusetts air national guardsman jack teixeira will plead guilty in a massive online leak of classified military documents. yesterday federal prosecutors filed a motion indicating that teixeira intended to change his not guilty plea to guilty next week. he's accused of sharing classified information about the war in ukraine and other national security issues on the social media platform discord. the "montgomery advertiser" says alabama state lawmakers overwhelmingly passed legislation protecting ivf patients and providers. the republican-led house and senate each passed bills yesterday granting civil and criminal immunity. it comes after the state supreme court ruled that frozen embryos have the same rights as children following a wrongful death lawsuit. several clinics paused in vitro fertilization treatments in the

wake of the court's ruling. a final bill is expected to head to the governor's desk next week for approval. and the "associated press" says a pregnant amish woman found dead in pennsylvania had cuts to her head and neck, according to state police. investigators say the body of 23-year-old rebekah byler was discovered by her husband and a family friend on monday in the victim's home in a remote farming area. byler's two children were found unharmed. >> i think everyone's just in shock. just stunned that something like this could happen here. >> now police say they have an idea of what the murder weapon was, but it is not in their possession. pennsylvania crime stoppers are offering $2,000 in reward money for any information about byler's death. ahead, emotional testimony. a crew member from the movie "rust" describes the aftermath of the deadly shooting. ng. ultomiris is for adults with generalized myasthenia gravis
