5:45 pm
saturday. we've got a lot going on heading towards that holiday weekend. the first of a couple storm systems is inching closer to us. we had dry weather for most of the bay area today. there were a couple pop-up showers. we've got one more dry day tomorrow before this storm moves in saturday, another one on its heels sunday into monday. let's track it with futurecast starting at 4:00 friday afternoon, clouds but still dry and the first showers aren't likely to hit the ground until after midnight. light rain showers to start the day saturday, but moderate to heavy rain takes over from midday into the afternoon into the evening saturday. this storm system will be a quick mover. we'll taper off to lingering showers by midnight saturday night. a couple showers are possible sunday morning. that's kind of a dry break through about midday sunday and then the next atmospheric river and the associated storm system will push heavier rain into the bay area before the sun goes down sunday afternoon and this system will linger quite a bit longer. that brings in greater flooding possible with more rain falling on already saturated soils. the amount of
5:46 pm
rain we're adding up is potentially enough for localized flooding with a slight risk of excessive rainfall, the weather prediction center's terminology. it means an elevated threat especially for sonoma county saturday into saturday night. sunday into sunday night the threat shifts farther south from basically the golden gate southward along the coast into the santa cruz mountains where more of the fire hose of moisture will be distributed. with the lingering rain monday, it's still a marginal risk of excessive rainfall. we're looking at numbers we expect to accumulate along with the range of possibilities for a few communities, including san jose expecting about 1.7 inches of rain. the we're always evaluating the range of what's possible. on the low end i think more than an inch of rain, but on the high end over 2 1/2 inches of rain possible even in san jose. for inland parts of the east bay, generally expecting 2 to 2 1/2 inches of rain. the numbers for concord, if this storm system
5:47 pm
underachieves, barely an inch, overachieves, 3 inches. if the system taps into more moisture, could easily get close to 4 inches of rain, even more for santa rosa. if the rain bands park long enough, could easily pick up over 6 inches of rain. six plus inches of rain is more likely in the santa cruz mountains where we'll also have to watch for main stem river flooding as that soaks in. let's look at the wind energy aspect of this system. saturday the winds will be elevated but not that strong except along the coast, 30 to 40-mile-an-hour gusts. it's a brief shot of gusty winds. the winds pick back up as that second storm system moves in, gusts more noticeable sunday as the rain picks up in intensity and the gusty winds last longer through sunday night into monday. in fact, some of the strongest winds will be with us
5:48 pm
monday, 30 to 40-mile-an-hour winds on a more widespread basis, not nearly as strong as what we had 11 days ago with that sunday night system, over 1 million people without power, but the ground is saturated and the winds will be strong enough to do tree damage and the associated power issues. in the sierra the first storm prompted a winter weather advisory, several inches of snow possible. i think most places fall short of a total foot. the second one is a stronger system. beginning monday, the snow will add up. if you're traveling that direction, do it either tomorrow or wait until sunday, kind of the break in between. monday onward will be treacherous to get up there. let's enjoy a dry day tomorrow. we have the one additional dry day in store for us with temperatures running a few degrees above average and then the rain arrives saturday. a little break early sunday,
5:49 pm
but more rain arrives in the afternoon and evening with the windiest conditions monday, lingering tuesday, showers wednesday, starting to taper off a little bit and one dry day at the tail end of the seven-day forecast. >> thanks, paul. time for a check of what's ahead at 6:00. we switch over to juliette. >> at 6:00 it's a new chapter for baseball in oakland and we're hearing from the neighborhood about the new home base for the ballers. also a new nearby high school that played host to some baseball greats tell us why this is a big win for students and the community. plus it is the center of festivities for lunar new year, but for some it's just home. a unique look at chinatown through the lens of the people who grew up there. the news at 6:00 is coming up in about ten minutes, but let's go to vern and sports. >> all right there, jules. we've got the nba up top and the warriors. did you know
5:50 pm
steve kerr is sitting on 499 wins as warriors coach. 500 could happen tonight at the utah, moving pictures on "the late show." what stopped them last night? the clippers in white scored 44 fourth quarter points, came from 12 down to the final period and stomped the dubs' win streak at five, six times this season golden state leaking oil after leading by at least 15 points. the dubs have an even win/loss record at home, not good enough says steph curry if they want a postseason run. >> if i'm not mistaken, think like .500 at home. so we're very average. very average doesn't get it done in this league. got to regain that home court fear that we've been accustomed to in the past. let's pivot to golf, shall we? tiger woods and competitive

5:52 pm
his excitement. >> obviously soler is huge if indeed it comes to fruition. >> what does that mean with a guy like that power in the lineup? >> he's always scared me. so i hope he's scaring the other side. history in the last hour, iowa's caitlin clark became the women's all time scoring leader against michigan just a few minutes into the game, past former washington husky kelsey plum with over 3,528 points and clark was just getting started, 23 points in the first quarter alone, wow! she's just going to shatter this mark by the time she's done. >> just amazing shooter. i would like to see her go against steph curry maybe next year. >> we get sabrina ionescu this weekend against curry during nba all-star weekend. >> those women can shoot, man. thanks, vern. the first time ever a woman will be the primary play-by-play announcer for a major league baseball team.
5:53 pm
