tv   CBS News Bay Area Afternoon Edition  CBS  February 5, 2024 12:00pm-12:31pm PST

12:00 pm
right now on the afternoon edition, the storm knocking down dozens of trees, cutting power to a quarter of a million people in the bay area. good afternoon. i am ryan yamamoto. strong winds top aled trees and power lines leaving branches and debris across the road way. shawn chitnis is in walnut creek where they're trying to get the lights back on where a power pole fell. what's the progress there? >> reporter: first let's talk about the impact it is having
12:01 pm
on drivers. if you look over here, you see that the back up continues. it's a long stretch of the road here. we are at the point where it goes from being down one lane to being down two lanes just before homestead avenue. that's why we are seeing such the delay here. let's zoom into what is one of the major problems at this particular spot where you can see one of the power lines has come down on its side, one of the many examples around the bay area of the impact of the strong and storms winds. let's look at the view from above that we have from the helicopter that gives a sense of what pge crews have been working on for quite sometime. we know there were concerns earlier and they were able to clear another section of this road. now they are dealing with this section and the delays are continuing. again, it is a long stretch of the road here. back just up from where we are, there is a shopping center where there are several businesses. the vast majority have been without business it
12:02 pm
looks like for most of the morning. i did reach out to pge to get a sense of the impact and if we can locate what this power line is doing for homes and businesses in the area. i haven't gotten a response yet. that is something they are looking into. the main message from authorities including walnut creek police is to avoid this stretch because it does not look like they will be able to open the lanes any time soon and get the traffic moving to what people would normally like to see around this time of day. >> we know the crews are out in full force doing the best check now. you have been reporting all morning. what damage have you seen as you were driving around the bay area? >> reporter: ryan, that's right. we are in the east bay and started our day in the morning in san francisco. all around san francisco, being out last night and this morning i can tell you, it didn't matter where you were going, one street trees are down, roads
12:03 pm
closed, detours being made. it's not just trees down but in some cases damage to actual homes. one home affected and others not. it gives you a sense of how the damage can be so random with storms like this. >> so random and so widespread. thanks shawn chitnis reporting live in walnut creek. trees were crashing down all over san francisco. crews are out trying to clear roads and get power turned back on. happening right now, mayor breed is giving an update on the damage around the city. the wind gusts, which is what has created the challenges we have seen with fallen trees and power outages, we had about 25,000 people who lost power last night. so far this morning at 8:00 a.m., less than 5,000 people still had problems are power. >> we have crews tracking the damage. we'll have more at
12:04 pm
3:00. a live look at the conditions around the bay area. there are a lot of clouds. maybe rain is tapered off. maybe it is coming down. jessica burch is here with the very latest. we saw the mayor and that rain was still coming down. absolutely. it is a first alert weather day. as we look at yesterday's impacts from the atmospheric river all the way down to morgan hill we saw over two inches of rain in those communities. the more north we went, the more impressive the storm got. let's talk about novato. wind speeds in marin got to around 102 miles per hour recorded by national weather service. match that with the heavy rain in the north bay and novato got over four inches within a 24 hour period. as we look at what's happening now, that doppler is still active. some of us are looking out our windows thinking what is she talking about? but some of us are
12:05 pm
dealing with active weather. this is very unstable. we can see pop up storms this afternoon. i was looking a second ago from our live cam, which i can show you, zach out real fast, this is our friends across the bay bridge, poor conditions with visibility, rainy as can be. let's pull back and show you other communities. it's dry closer to san leandro, hayward. the santa clara valley, light drizzle in the forecast. let's look at what's going to happen this afternoon. more unsettled storms will move in producing a quarter inch in the east bay, drier in the north bay for a little bit. showers linger into our forecast tomorrow. i will talk about how yesterday's impacts are lasting into our forecast today. we have seen downed trees and power outages. of course we are still dealing with localized flooding. i will have more on that in a bit. >> thanks. thousands out of power in sonoma. some outages are caused by fallen trees. you see a
12:06 pm
block in the road here with caution tape. san jose officials watching guadelupe river. the mayor is issuing a state of emergency. they were out warning people living near the river that they may have to evacuate. there are encampments along the bank. as the river s' man escaped but came back to get his cat. >> most of the time, i don't have to worry. the water will take my house away, things like that. he was in my bed waiting. he knew i would come to get him. i will keep him with me as long as i can. >> great to see the cat is safe. firefighters sharing this video of a rescue on the river. three people and 12 dogs were rescued. at one point a quarter million customers were without power in the bay area. that number is now down to 185,000.
12:07 pm
still a lot of people. the hardest hit areas are north and south bay. outages caused school districts in san jose and sonoma to cancel classes today. as bay area cleans up from the storm, people in southern california are dealing with mudslides and strong winds. look at the water covering the road. this was realto in san bernardino county. more on the damage from los angeles. >> reporter: this is by far the worst destruction we have seen driving through the hills in beverly crest. all morning we have seen damage to homes. check out this video, an entire home forced off of its foundation by mud flow and debris. that came down around 2:00 this morning. neighbors tell us the home is vacant which is so fortunate when you see the destruction, everything from inside the home forced out and shoved down the street including a giant piano that is just in the middle of the road.
12:08 pm
several other homes are damaged. incredibly, no one was seriously hurt. >> that's up and down the state. that storm also causing trouble at our bay area airports. there have been dozens of cancellations today at sfo. there are fewer at oakland and san jose. the airports are reporting high levels of delays. those delays are causing trouble for fans trying to get to las vegas for the super bowl. a live look from las vegas. welcome to super bowl week. we have extensive live coverage as niners are set to take on the kansas city chiefs. this evening will be opening night, a media event where players sit with hundreds of journalists including vern glenn and matt lively. we have a team of reporters covering the team and faithful who are showing up in full force. 49er fans sending the team
12:09 pm
off from san jose airport yesterday afternoon. we followed their journey to las vegas and nicole zaloumis caught dozens of fans greeting them at the hilton hotel where they will stay. hours before the 49ers arrived at the hilton, loyal fans were already on hand patiently waiting for their team. >> we were trying to be first here to get some good seats. hopefully we can catch something going on in there. hopefully we don't get crowded up. we wanted to be first here. >> for this local family they realized they should probably go home and bundle up if they were going to wait a faux more hours for the niners' arrival. >> it will be a while. they haven't even left yet. >> because of the rain delay, yeah. thank you. appreciate that. >> being hopeful, waiting. bringing the kids, hoping to
12:10 pm
see our favorite guys. >> i made my way to the team hotel before i was quickly told to stop and turn around. security is tight now. this gives you a good idea as to where the 49ers are staying. i wasn't the only person snooping around. >> just to see them, get a glimpse at least. >> we have been to many niner games but we are always at the highest seats. >> it will be nice to see them close up at least. >> as sun set, the fans came out by the dozens. even if they didn't see their favorite players up close, niner faithful let their team know it's game time. >> kpix is your home for all things super bowl lviii. we have multiple reporters on the ground in las vegas. that's the crew right there including our morning team, julia good rich and the sports team, vern glenn, matt lively with live reports continuing this evening at 5:00 p.m. kpix and paramount plus are the only places to

12:15 pm
the santa cruz pier. that's not snow. that's foam. it pushes the waves and there are reports of hurricane force winds in santa cruz. a look outside, look at the clouds. pretty ominous. let's check back with meteorologist jessica burch. we are not done yet. >> we are not. i love how you got distracted by the clouds. that's me every time i look outside the window. the hurricane force winds yesterday with heavy rain left lasting impacts throughout the area. we are talking about wind speeds up to 102 miles per hour recorded in areas in marin. it was a gusty day yesterday and we are still seeing breezy conditions along our coastline this afternoon, not as bad as yesterday as storms started sweeping in from offshore. we were on the strongest quadrant and we got some of the gustiest winds. this is the strongest storm we have seen in the bay
12:16 pm
area since 2010. the area of low pressure sat directly offshore bringing really heavy showers and that allowed to localized flooding and downed trees and power outages. that's what we are still dealing with. a live look, it is still rainy as moderate rain moves its way throughout stretching into martinez and hercules. we are kind of split. santa clara getting hit with light showers and drier conditions closer to alameda. for the next hours, we will see them stick around for us. early morning hours tomorrow it starts to taper off but we can see a lingering shower or two in the forecast as the atmospheric river that was directed at us like a vector to our local communities, it is starting to move to the south. the reason it is important to note because in l.a. they are dealing with some of the heaviest rain and flooding they've seen in a long time. they're seeing high risks of flood threat widespread
12:17 pm
throughout the communities, anaheim, san bernardino, thousand oaks, santa barbara. we are keeping a close eye on conditions widespread throughout our state into the afternoon hours today, early morning hours tomorrow. for us in the bay, we will start drying. day by day, it gets better. we can see lingering showers into our wednesday evening forecast, drier as we kick offer the weekend. saturday we are talking about sunshine around the corner and we are also talking about 60s returning too which is not much different from the upper 50s we have now. a similar trend along the bay as well, partly cloudy skies throughout the week. at least it will be drier and a great opportunity to help your neighbor especially after all the impacts we have seen from the two atmospheric rivers we had back to back last week and this week. ryan. >> thanks. it may cost you $10,000 to get a ticket on the super bowl. coming up, we will show you an event where you can potentially meet the players for free. i am so happy that after a
