moroccan earthquake climbs to over 2,000 as crews struggle to find those still alive. 9/11 remembered. america pauses to honor those lost. we'll tell you how the president will mark 22 years since the terror attacks. grand slam record. novak djokovic wins the u.s. open setting a new record for tennis grand slam titles. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the frantic search for survivors in morocco after friday's catastrophic earthquake. more than 2,100 people were killed in the magnitude 6.8 quake. rescue crews hoping to find survivors in hard-to-reach remote mountain areas are pulling bodies out of the rubble. video from a wedding in marrakesh on friday shows the earthquake striking as the orchestra performed. musicians fled from the stage as people can be heard screaming. haley ott joins us with the

latest. good morning. > reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the epicenter of friday's massive earthquake was high in the atlas mountains, about 50 miles from marrakesh. some rural villages there where buildings are built into the mountainside made of clay and mud brick have been completely destroyed. new satellite images show the extent of damage in morocco after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake brought down buildings killing and injuring thousands. this man says friday's quake struck while his family was at the dinner table, killing one of his young sons. rescuers are still sifting through the rubble in a race against time to find survivors. the quake triggered landslides that have blocked roads cutting off vital access to hard-hit remote villages in the mountains. the moroccan government has set up tents for those who have lost their homes, but survivors say they need bread and water, and that aid has been far too slow. in marrakesh, those displaced by the quake slept outside for the

third night in a row fearing aftershocks. >> we need help because every family here, they don't have the house. every house here is down. >> reporter: locals, tourists, and even the national soccer team have lined up to donate blood. prayers and condolences poured in from around the world including from pope francis and president biden. >> we're working expeditiously to ensure american citizens in morocco are safe. standing ready to provide any necessary assistance to the people, as well. the u.s. embassy says a small number of americans were injured, but there were no deaths. the moroccan government has so far accepted offers of support from four countries, spain, qatar, the uk, and the uea, and cbs news has learned a team of disaster experts is there in morocco to determine how the u.s. can aid with the humanitarian effort. >> all right, haley ott in new york, thank you. president biden will be

the country to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed at the world trade center in new york ity, the pentagon, and shanksville, pennsylvania. traditional twin towers of light will be beaming into the sky today at the site of the world trade center. and there are new details in the search for an escaped murderer in pennsylvania. authorities released new images of a now-clean shaven danelo cavalcante. they were taken by a doorbell camera more than 20 miles from where they were searching for him. investigators say he stole a van and tried to contact two former co-workers at their homes, but they were not there. cavalcante escaped from prison almost two weeks ago. and new covid-19 booster shots are expected to be approved bythe fda this week as cases -- are ticking up again. hospitalizations were just over 9,000 in july, but they climbed to 17,000 in august. elise preston reports. the chances of this being an

overwhelming rush of cases and hospitalizations is probably low. >> reporter: covid infections are on the rise across the country with hospitalizations last month increasing nearly 16%. >> i had a few colleagues who were sick with covid this summer. >> reporter: the uptick in cases prompting this san francisco food bank to sound the alarm. >> people are concerned because there's people that never got vaccinated. >> reporter: but overall, health experts say the country's better equipped to handle a winter covid outbreak thanks to plentiful vaccines and natural immunity. many don't expect a return to mandatory masking. >> if the cases go up, that there might be recommendations, not mandates. >> reporter: in l.a. county masks are recommended but not required despite outbreaks in schools jumping 43% in the last week, and tripling in a month at workplaces. many insurance providers are no

"the washington post" reports virginia republican governor glenn youngkin pardoned the father of a girl who was sexually assaulted at her high school. scott smith was forcibly removed by police from a school board meeting in 2021 while protesting the school's handling of the case. he was convicted of obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct. the case drew national attention over the issue of parental rights. "the arizona republic" says after a record-breaking weekend, cooler temperatures are expected in phoenix. temperatures hit a high of 112 degrees yesterday, breaking the previous record for that date by a degree. it was also a record 55th day

forecast in some cities around the country. multiple people were injured when an explosion rocked an illinois processing complex. emergency crews responded to the archer daniels midland facility in decatur yesterday after an explosion led to flames and smoke billowing from the building. the company says several employees were injured and transported to the local hospital for treatment. this is the second incident at the plant in less than a month. there's a new sneak peek at the upcoming "aquaman" sequel, and an enormous discovery in an extinct volcano could reduce the u.s. dependency on china. courtney kealy has details in today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stocks finished up friday with the financial markets ready for a new week facing the question could there be a fourth-quarter inflation surprise?
