atlanta. >> reporter: this indictment charges trump and many of his former aides with coordinating a criminal enterprise to overturn the 2020 election results in this battleground state that he lost in 2020. late monday night, a georgia judge unsealed a fulton county grand jury indictment against former president trump. >> everything went as it should have in front of the grand jury. >> yes, your honor. >> reporter: the gop presidential frontrunner is charged with multiple felonies including violation of the buy -- the georgia rico act and solicitation of violation of oath by public officer. >> the indictment includes 41 felony counts and is 97 pages long. >> reporter: georgia district attorney fani willis says trump and his allies tried to overturn the 2020 election results in georgia. >> the defendants engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise

to overturn georgia's presidential election result. >> reporter: the trump campaign called the indictment election interference, and trump remained defiant while campaigning in iowa this weekend. >> we did nothing wrong. >> reporter: former democratic state senator jen jordan gave testimony to the grand jury. she spoke to cbs news about a committee hearing she attended at the state capitol with trump attorney rudy giuliani in december, 2020. >> everything they talked about that was abnormal to them could be explained away very simply of how elections are run in georgia. >> reporter: unlike the other three criminal cases, cameras are expected to be allowed in the fulton county courtroom. district attorney fani willis said the defendants including mr. trump have until next friday, august 25th, to surrender. cristian benevides, cbs news, atlanta.

turning now to hawaii where the devastating effects from last week's deadly wildfire can be seen across maui. the death toll has risen to 99 people, but officials warn that number is likely to go up with thousands still missing. most of the victims are still unidentified. the island is not out of danger yet. there are fires burning, and residents are worried about what's to come with more high winds possible. cbs' jessica kartalija is live in maui for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, wendy. police are expected to release some of the names of the victims who have been positively identified by family members. this, of course, as the recovery efforts here on the island continue. desperate west maui residents waited in long lines for hours for a pass to get temporary access to their homes. >> i don't know how it's going to be because we don't have no housing or whatnot. we're hoping for the best. >> reporter: in lahaina, search

operations are stepping up with more than 1,000 people still unaccounted for. >> they will find 10 to 20 people per day probably until they finish. >> reporter: as survivors look to return home, looting has also become a major concern. >> there are some people who went back to their places and sheltered in place because their homes were intact, and they had to fend off potential break-in. >> reporter: the hospitality industry is urging people who can reschedule plans to come to maui to try and do so. however, at some point they're going to have to continue with the tourism as the island relies on those dollars. wendy? >> jessica kartalija in maui. thanks. as the area looks to recover, there are now mounting questions about how this tragedy happened and wiped out nearly an entire town. jonathan vigliotti talked to the fire chief about why residents say they had little to no heads-up from officials before the blaze engulfed the city.

>> reporter: before the flames, there were warning signs as 80 mile-per-hour winds whiplashed power lines. >> heads-up, the lightning is live on the ground. >> reporter: for several hours, hawaii officials did not shut down the power or stage fire crews out of caution. soon the fire sparked, then exploded. the flames spreading a mile a minute all while warning sirens sat silent. investigators are trying to determine if power lines caused the fire. >> let's go! >> reporter: amid the ashes, there is anger. could a few extra minutes have given residents a chance to flee before the fire engulfed lahaina? >> we've spoken with so many survivors who say there were no evacuations issued, no text alerts, the sirens didn't go off, and even fire hydrants didn't have water. >> reporter: how did so much go so wrong? >> i can't speak to a lot of those parts. they're not parts of our department. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: today fema confirmed there was an issue impacting water supply to the

hydrants all as the search continues for the missing. the task overwhelming. they've only covered 3% of this massive disaster zone. with so many still missing, there is a google doc to help locate residents. over 5,000 names, most found, but hundreds are still unaccounted for. for lahaina residents who got out safely, roadblocks are preventing them from returning. >> i feel the anger and the angst that people want to go home. everyone wants to go home. there are so many of our friends and family that never left. >> that was jonathan vigliotti reporting. a fire at a gas station in the southern russian region of dagestan killed at least 27 people, according to the interfax news agency. officials say it started when a fire broke out at an auto repair shop off a highway. explosions spread to a nearby gas station. the dead included three children. authorities say more than 100 people were injured. it took firefighters more than

3.5 hours to put out the flames. staying abroad, rescue operations are under way in india after landslides killed at least 50 in the country's himalayan mountains. around two dozen others are still trapped or missing under the debris. heavy rains and melting glaciers brought the deadly flash flooding to the area. officials blame climate change for the worsening conditions. there are new details in the case of a utah man killed by fbi agents during a raid on his home. the fbi says 75-year-old air force veteran craig robertson was killed last week when he pointed a gun at the agents attempting to arrest him. they went to his home in provo after he allegedly made violent threats against president biden. the raid took place just hours before mr. biden arrived in salt lake city. the former nfl player who inspired the oscar nominated movie "the blind side" is suing the couple who he claims lied about adopting him. michael oher said the couple tricked him into signing papers

and diverted to others airports yesterday. the lava flow stopped in the morning, but the volcano continued to send ash into the air. the use of motorcycles and bicycles were banned for 48 hours because streets were covered in ash. a woman was sentenced in connection to the murder of van guilty pleas in a police torture case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports six former mississippi law officers pleaded guilty to state charges for torturing two black men. the five former sheriff's deputies and a former police officer appeared in court yesterday on several charges including aggravated assault. earlier this year they entered a house without a warrant, handcuffed and assaulted the two men. one of the victims was shot in the mouth. the officers also pleaded guilty earlier this month to federal civil rights charges. the "texas tribune" says an accomplice tied to the murder of a u.s. soldier was sentenced to 30 years in prison. army specialist vanessa guillen was bludgeoned to death at fort
